During WW2, my Dad was an Army doctor, and he rode cross country on the troop trains. A friend made a box just like the one in this project, to carry a few emergency meds. After the war, it became a little tool box. I rescued it from the estate sale, and it's on a shelf in my man-cave - still has a few paint drips on it. Thanks for showing us how it's done.
Uncle Colin, I love that you share your years of experience with us newbies. But don't forget we're newbies. When you use the jointer, cnc, etc remember to add alternatives for those 85% of us without those tools.
Thanks again and keep the awesome videos coming 👍🏾
Here is a tip. Put a couple of playing cards between the lid and box and tape the box shut before attaching the hinges. That way the lid will always close right.
Bill Wheaton I super appreciate this tip! Thank you
Ill try this tonight. thanks
Bill Wheaton
Nice box, I need to make one for sure.
Thumbs up for recycling woods.. I saw a spark.. the saw hit a nail..
Yes, I nicked one of those wire nails ... oh well, no harm done :)
Didn’t realize yellow mustard was such a good adhesive. Lol!
Good video!
I started reading the comments to see if anyone commented on it or it’s a brand of wood glue I have never heard of
You are the man!
Very nice! I like that the plywood was rescued.
Drunken Woodworker I hate to pass up decent wood, I always seem to find a use for it ... thanks for posting
Very cool, you can never have enough storage boxes.
Nicely done, I will have to start watching for scraps in the neighborhood, can always use small boxes around the shop.
Carl Jacobson Thanks Carl
Bill Neupert I am surprised how often I can come up with decent dry wood that has been sitting in someones garage or basement ... that they are often only too happy to get rid of.
I'm gonna build a simple wooden box from scrap wood I found at a construction site. First thing you'll need is $5000 worth of tools. I still watched and like the video....
Five years on...your tips still work...I made exactly the same for my tools...thanks so much Colin...
Excellent video. Was simply looking for an easily made, but purposeful box. Had to scroll through quite a few videos to find one that was useful without watching a 'carpenter' build a box using all kinds of tools and equipment that I don't have. This, I could do. Well done, sir!
Hey! Oliver Reed does woodwork! Cool! :)
I like the way you cut up that scrap in an organized way, to get the marerial you need for the box.
Love it, simple, and useful! Thanks 🙏🏽
Kia Ora & Good Afternoon from North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand …great video bro …
As someone who hasn't done any real wood working since Jr. High Shop class this video is wonderful. Simple and uncomplicated as well as detailed for those of us who don't know the obvious small steps. Thank you so much, I can't wait to try this.
Yes, I am seven years late, but boy, this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! Subscribed.
Wow! Amazing
That lid idea is genius!!!
Great video
I love the simplicity of that box Colin 👍👍.
Im 13 and your channel made me want to do what you guys do thank you for that👍🏽😊
i love the simplicity and the use of used items. I have some 1/2" plywood at home! -- excited to try it all. It would be my first time making those joints ((fingers crossed))
Great stuff, I plan to use your tutorial to make a box from 80 years old floor boards I ripped out when I was doing renovation.
Nice, thanks Colin!
I just made 3 boxes before I seen this, I made the box and lid separately, it was a ton work try to match them up perfectly, I'm going to try this next time, it seems way more simple and makes more sense, awesome idea
Nicely done, sir! I think that I'll make one myself. Thank you very much for the clear instructions!
Thanks ! Excellent video.
i love getting free wood, i found some mdf and other types of wood in a dumpster so naturally i got it and made shelfs for my gun safe
I know it's an old video but just found it after trolling the internet looking for exact instructions for a simple rabbet joint box. Which piece has what rabbet etc. Never done anything like this before and now everything is so clear. Thank you.
Nicely done and I will try to make a few to get my woodworking skills going.
Thank you for drawing those black lines showing where the dadoes will be. I'm a beginner and appreciate your video very much.
Nice one
This very method will be the one I use with my son to introduce him to woodworking! It's simple and uses a bunch of great techniques that are used in so many other projects! 6yr old video and still relevant!
I like that one. Nicer box than my usual shop box. 😃
thank you .... u make it look so easy !!!!!
Great job!
Its simple for newby. Thx!
quick, simple, useful..... PERFECT! :D
Tomas Martinez Thanks Tomas, very well said
Great video, thanks for the tips
Very fine sir thanks
thanks for the idea
I really admire the fact that you have such higher-end tools but aren't above scrounging curbside cut-offs. There's a lesson in there somewhere.
I love watching your videos. From all the woodwoking channels on youtube, this is the one I enjoy the most.
Thanks for the simple box. Note that your outside measurements after completed job is 6.5 inches high = to 6” plus 1/4” for top 1/4” for bottom.
I was working to exact outside dimensions. I cut the sides to 5.5” (6” board cut less thickness of board) plus extra length for cutting 2 ends. the ends would be 5.5” by 5.5”.
Great video. Very nice quick little box. Exactly what I was looking for. I think I'll go make one today. Thanks
Definitely going to use this idea to make storage boxes for my vinyls
Murph. Glad to hear, thanks for commenting ... I am assuming you are meaning vinyl records?? ... if so, I also did a vid on making picture frames for the covers that makes them easy to move the covers in and out.
Love the box! I went downstairs and made 5 of them right after watching your video :)
Triple Screen Gamer LOL ... I should got you to make a couple more for me at the same time ... seems "other people" have borrowed some of mine.
Thanks for commenting ... great to have you with us
Good job grand pa ur cool!!!

Thank you very much for the idea. I'll go to made boxes for my hand tools and I was searching the most eficient and easy mode. I find it.

Quick and simple. Two thumbs up.
ssaxe01s lol ... thanks buddy :)

Grace Norman thanks Grace
Hi
Your jobs are amazing.
Congratulations.
Another good video.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I needed a simple idea to use some of my scrap wood to make boxes to store my empty canning jars.
Darren Rubendall Perfect, all the best with your project ...
Great vid brother! Thank you! I think I am gonna try this one then dye it with the color liquid dye kit to dress her up a bit ;)
Terribly useful!
Thank you!
Fantastic! Simple, inexpensive, strong, and functional. With a quick sanding and varnish or paint they are very attractive.
Thanks for watching!
thanks, good video
Hi colin,I enjoy your videos, mainly because of the way you present them,I've made a copy of your box and I'm going to make a few more for my shed,I didn't think I would enjoy making them the way I did, keep the videos coming.
Richie Thewles Thanks the note Rich ... appreciate your feedback buddy
Very good job and nice Work
Angel1984 Hernandez Thank you for commenting
Great little project! Never consider using reclaimed plywood as it can look tatty but these cleaned up a treat. Seen lots of bandsaw (which I don't have) boxes but now see you can do a similar trick on the table saw. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
It's probably just me, but there seems to be a wicked high frequency noise in the video. Otherwise, great content.
Great video, I went out and made one just like the one you made, worked perfectly .... thanks for the tips
***** Perfect ... that's what I like to hear !
I love this because my table saw can't take a dado stack. Thanks!
Mugsy Kudzu Yes, that's why I made these the way I did :)
Really liked your video and the fact that the only major tool you need (if you have one straight edge) is a table saw. thanks
Colin, thanks for the well done video. I am a beginning woodworker, I noticed you have a table saw and a mitre saw. Do you have a video or tips on what order a beginning woodworker should acquire tools ? Thanks, Brooks Davis
Excellent work .. I hope to explain how to dye fund but an elaborate way
Really enjoyed that, Thanks.
Miles Hodge Thanks for commenting Miles
thank you for this video sir.. you inspired me....i made my own version of jewelry box, i put some accessories on it... thank you.
neat. great simple build. love it
Richard Cowtails Thanks Richard for taking a moment to comment
Excellent! I will use this great example to build an enclosure for my CNC router. Thank you sir and have a great day!
Glad I could help!
Oh god we are making this in school but bigger to store our tools in :)
Thanks for this video. I really like that it's just thrown together with scraps and very few tools. This is something I could actually recreate. No hate on the more fancy box videos. I just don't own a warehouse of 1,187 different woodworking tools to make the extravagant boxes those guys suggest.
Thank you best video ever. I liked the lid idea
You're Welcome!
perfect
learning a lot from your videos - thanks!
James Campbell good to hear James, thanks for commenting on this
Colin
very nice and cool. good job
Iqbal Ahmed Thank you Iqbal
Excelente Proyecto.
Exitos.
Harry Alberto Mosquera Vallejo Thank You :)
Nice instruction with some great tips.
Thanks for watching Wayne!
Great video...simple but very necessary basic skills. You cannot imagine the trouble I had making a very simple wood box for my daughter today. Nothing was square.
Big and main difficulty??? Making straight cuts with a jigsaw...
Great vid Colin. Just something I think is worth mentioning is to use some clamps to secure what will be the top portion of your box instead of nailing it. This is to avoid any nails which are extremely hard on the carbide teeth of your saw blade. One nick and there goes a bunch of money. Thanks Colin and keep these great videos coming.
Derek
GiddyUp994 Thanks Derek, great point and one I missed, yes clamping the glue is a great, easy way of making these boxes for those who don't have air pinners or who don't want to use pins in them. Thanks Derek ... great point !!
hey buddy, thanks!!!!!
Your Amazing!
Thank You!
This is great! Could I by chance have the exact measurements?
Thanks for this video, i like them.
AirwinAtHome Thanks again !!
Mr Knecht, Thank you for this video, I just made my first box based on your video and it's great! Also great fun to make a storage box for my wife's tools.
bert kraan Perfect, glad to hear .. thanks for sharing this
WoodWorkWeb I finished the box by cutting the lid after the glue dried. I made the box using dado joints all around and put together a littel spreadsheet to calculate what you have to saw when you know what the inner- or outer measurements should be. See picture of my first box and the spreadsheet at:

regards,
Bert
bert kraan Well done Bert, you did a nice job of that, you will find these kinds of boxes very useful. Are you going to put hinges on it or leave it as a lift-off lid?
Good job man!!!!
***** I appreciate you taking a moment to comment, thanks
Thanks.. The little box that could :)
MrEdsster lol ... perfect :)
Very nice! My little girl wants to make a Valentines Day box and this will be perfect. I am a motor head, but I have enough wood working tools to be dangerous so I was kind of freaking out wondering how the hell I would make a box! This is perfect design!
I'm glad I can be of help. I hope she enjoys it!
