Code P0172 & P0175 on Mercedes W212 E-Class - MAF Sensor & Throttle cleaning

  • I got a check engine light with some rough engine idle on my Mercedes W212 (E300 2011) a few days after replacing an ignition coil:
    • Mercedes W212 E Class ...
    Checking with an OBDII scanner it shows codes P0172 & P0175 for engine rich condition on bank 1 & 2. Fuel trims on both banks showed below -20% (long term + short term). O2 sensor readings for both banks were similar to each other. Fuel pressure was stable with the ignition on and engine off. I decided to first clean the mass air flow sensor (MAF) and the throttle and see what happens (both were very dirty). Cleaned the MAF and throttle with electronics spray cleaner since I couldn't find MAF and throttle spray cleaner until a week later. After cleaning, the Fuel trims on both banks went down to -15% but the check engine was still on. After driving the car for a few days (engine was a lot smoother) the check engine light turned off on day 3.
    **Update: The check engine light came back on 2 weeks after it was gone with the same codes. At this point I suspected the intake manifold or the MAF sensor. Since I didn't want to just throw expensive parts to fix the issue and couldn't check if any were the problem I decided to go to a Mercedes shop for diagnosis. Initially, they told me I had a bad intake manifold and wanted to also change the spark plugs and 2 coils. Since they seemed to know what they are doing I gave them the green light to fix it plus the labor was reasonable at the time. When I came to pick up the car it turned out that they also decided to change the MAF and removed the 2 new coils since they were not needed. The problem is fixed now but seems I was wrong for letting a shop blindly throw parts at my issue when I could have done the same myself.

    I had P0172 and P0175 codes come up, (System Too Rich Bank 1 and Bank 2). The first sign of an issue was when I started the car, the engine would rev on it's own at idle until it warmed up. There was a slight hesitation in starting out in gear. Then the engine light came on while at a light. The issue I had was when I changed my engine air filters inside the top aft cover that I removed, and I reinstalled the cover, the air opening on the center aft section of the cover was not fully pressed down over the intake opening. Once I had pressed the cover fully down over the port, I felt it seat more. I cleared the codes and took the car for a ride. The engine light has stayed off and I can feel it running smoother.

    • @ZakiGarage
      @ZakiGarage  Před 3 lety

      Not bad, I might have done that same mistake of not seating the filter housing correctly years back when I first got the car but it never gave me an engine code. Unfortunately, I might be starting the same issue again the past weeks of rough engine idle but no codes yet. I think I overlooked the source of the issue and now its hitting again of crankcase breather valve leaking oil into the throttle and intake manifold. Might make a video of changing the crankcase breather valve this weekend.

      I will let everyone on a little secret how to repair. The main problem is the MAF. If anyone uses Brakleen or Gumout, the unit will kick codes. The unit is contaminated. Remove the maf and assy. Submerge and clean it with Dawn dishwashing detergent and hot water. Rinse and use hair dryer to dry. Next, check and replace the air filters if necessary. If this does not work, remove and clean again. If it still does not work, replace with only a Bosch MAF. You are welcome :)

    Something that isn't being mentioned here is how important it is to keep your air filters clean! The MAF will not get dirty to this point if the Air Filter was changed regularly.

    • @ZakiGarage
      @ZakiGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      True changing air filters regularly helps but the MAF will fail eventually, I've seen a few fail with regular maintenance. This car was actually regularly taken to the dealership for all its maintenance up till the video.

      My issue came from when I changed my air filters in that aft cover and NOT reseating it fully back on the engine. Air was not flowing right and I got the codes and engine light. Such a simple fix.

    In my experience I have observed that the oil separator is clogged, this generates a higher vacuum than normal. After 5 months of revision, what I found was to clean the oil separator. the right bank showed -6%, after cleaning it was reduced to -3.8%. Good luck and I hope you can solve your fault P0750 / p0746.

      True, have noticed the oil separator on these engines are really bad. They let lots of oil through them and into the intake manifold and cause lots of issues.

      You can use that scanner on your phone but you'll need the correct dongle. This one in specific is blue driver ~ 100 dollars.
      But you can get cheaper ones for about 20 dollars and use torque lite (free) or torque (5 dollars) and get very similar results for this check engine light.
      Any basic code reader probably also has a live data section where you can see fuel trims and engine codes

    I cleaned my the MAF sensor on my C300 (I've done it successfully before) and now I have a P0101, P0102 and P0110 code and the engine idles low even on cold start. I did accidentally initially start the car with the MAF unplugged but now even with it plugged in I still have the same issue.

      @ZakiGarage  Před rokem

      I have started cars with the MAF disconnected. Just need to connect it back, clear fault codes and start the car. I noticed first start after reconnecting the MAF is rough but goes back to normal. But in general cleaning the MAF doesn't always fix a bad MAF, usually it has to be replaced once the MAF is bad.

    • @ZakiGarage
      @ZakiGarage  Před 4 měsíci

      I had bad MAFs do that on my w212 and e46, so it is a possibility. I've also had it be the sparkplugs at half their intended life span. These engines are also known for oil from the PCV going into the intake manifold and messing it up. My car is on its 3rd manifold and its why I got a catch can installed so I don't need a 4th. I've also used intake cleaner spray to clean some of the oil in the intake manifold, it helped a bit.
