I learned how to play saxophone. Many years ago from a guy who was in the New York musicians Union, and he played with Benny Goodman. Sammy Kay k the Dorsey brothers and Glenn Miller like he played with all the big bands.. He told me to attach my read. The same as you said to attach your read like a fingernail distance from the top of the mouthpiece. After being in the Marine Corps and going to college. Get in a real job. I finally decided to start playing again. So I started taking lessons and the few teachers that I had told me. I was putting the read on wrong. I started to think I was getting false memories. Thank you.
My sister passed 2 years ago and I have her clarinet. Just opened it today and brought back memories when I used to play in grade school. Thanks for this detailed video so I can learn how to play again❤
I'm not playing the clarinet, I do not even intend to. I came to search for a C note on the clarinet and I stayed for the whole video. I loved the way she introduced the instrument, did not cut off the parts she was looking at her notes. It was so pure almost touching to see her devotion.
I'm a grade 7 pianist and have desperately wanted to learn a second instrument. The piano is getting too simple for me, as fun as it is, and although I wanted my second instrument to be the oboe at first I've decided on clarinet. This has given me a lot of understanding - thank you so much!
@@orbstars2 you’re talking absolute shit, you ave the absolute wrong attitude for music!!! If you’re thinking “ the piano is too simple” then you should be able to play anything, why aren’t you on stage with stevie wonder?
Very fun that you did that for another purpose but is still so useful 9 years later. Thank you! That intelligent perspective from someone early in their development -- before forgetting what it used to be like -- is VERY helpful! Kudos!
I’ve been playing brass instruments (mainly french horn) for over 6 years now, and have acquired an old clarinet from a family member. Think it’ll be interesting to challenge myself and attempt learning an instrument where I can’t just translate my skills to a different sized mouthpiece. Quick note: I’m being picky here but many brass instruments also have their music notated in treble clef, including French Horn and Trumpet. Bass Clef is typically reserved for instruments like Euphonium and Trombone.
Thanks for the video and tips. I've started trying to teach myself how to play the clarinet because I miss playing a musical instrument and nostalgia from my band years. Played trombone then switched to tuba during high school. You're video has given me some great instruction and a few tid bits that are interesting. I haven't played for some years or a woodwind at all and the embouchures for mouthpiece instruments are different than wood winds. Its a challenge but within time I'll learn.
Thank You for this video. Graduated many years ago and our High School Alumni have been asked to participate in a fundraiser for our community (we had the most amazing Band Director so when he asked and it's for my hometown I couldn't say no). I've got a month to get 2 songs down. This is definitely refreshing my memory. This is an older video and I hope you have continued with your love of music. You would make an amazing Band Director.
Im in 7th grade now and I just got my first clarinet from playing the piano. Thanks so much, you helped me so much!!! This definitely surprised my parents because I just played C to the other C on the clarinet after getting my clarinet.
Thanks for this. I may be encouraged to get the clarinet out, but they sure have a lot of buttons compared to saxophones, and different notes in the octaves... This is a thorough explanation for we novices and a good place to start.
I found a liquor store and I drank it Aw i actually played in 5th grade too! Happy to hear that you’re getting back into it. I’m really tempted in buying one again.
Don’t bite on it. Just let it stay there and if your tonguing the reed, just gently touch it with the tip of your tongue. It won’t break unless you force it to break!
Thank you for this, helped me understand the clarinet alot more, I'm a freshman trombone who is learning different instruments. I can play the clarinet down to A flat but that's about it.
I have wanted to join band, and decided to finally do it. I decided on the clarinet and am studying for rehearsals to get in, and this video helped me tons!
