  • I bought another Idealarc 250! This one's a 1969 vintage! In this video I do a few things:
    1. Replace the fan bearings.
    2. Dismantle the entire welder.
    3. Powerwash the entire unit.

I keep watching this over and over 😂- In the early 80s my Dad needed some 18 ga stainless TIG welded together-I had a air cooled torch so I used a 1/16” stainless filler rod for a resistor-kept moving the connection down the rod until I got to where it needed to be-Definitely not OSHA approved but it worked 👍

Haha! Too cool! It makes it worth doing when I hear someone like you who really enjoys it.

I got one of those from my work on a sealled bid for $6. Never used it yet. Been wanting to get it out. Someone chopped the cord and the leads off. But I got some more to put on it. These do last forever. Our shop was full of them up until 10-15 yrs ago. Thanks for the video.

Wow! $6...........that's amazing! They are super easy to wire, I'll try and explain the wiring on my next video.

I bought one of these when I was getting my welding degree at local community college. They replace all 20 of them for newer Lincolns Idealarc 250 Stick Welder. They sold me and other students and school employee's for $80 bucks. Yup! Machines that looked new after some cleaning. For $80 bucks. These old units are very Heavy! Awesome info and video.

Thanks, they didn't have the space to store them for auctions and wanted to get rid of them asap and give the students a deal on their first welder's. Our class lucked out for sure. I mainly weld with 7018, 6013, and some 6011 and she runs like a dream. Good luck on the job. Awesome channel. Thanks for sharing.@@shopdoc

Great welder. It looks very well taken care of, too. I learned how to arc weld with one, and later certified with one. . . Thanks, and Merry Xmas!

I’m the guy in Southern Illinois that restored and sold those. Great video on how to dismantle these fantastic welders. The item on the back of the front panel could possibly be a voltage suppressor. Sometimes they are above the diode bank on the back baffle panel. The purpose of those is to keep the open circuit voltage OCV down to specifications (70-80). We always used a voltmeter across the lugs with the machine running under no welding load to check this prior to selling. The machine will weld fine with 100 volts OCV but if your gloves are wet it’s not pleasant

Just watched part 2. It turned out great. We sent our sheet metal out to a local powder coater. They sand blasted, zinc primed and baked on the color. Just easier for us as we don’t like to paint. Your welder is ready for the next 50 years of service.

I had a little Everlast 200ST that finally crapped out after 7 years. Picked up one of these for $200 today after finding it on marketplace. Mines a 1966! Had one in welding school and loved how it ran air arc off 220v single phase. I have an '88 SA200 and '69 SA200 but I dont weld full time anymore and it gets old having to fire one up for every odd and end. Good to see the internals if I need to troubleshoot.

I bet that 1966 last way more than another 7 yrs!! Great find!

Mine 1976 vintage unit was in better shape when I got it but no leads or power cables. It is a nice solid machine. Now all I have to do is learn how to weld.

I have a 1969 idealarc ac/DC welder also, mine was formally from the Oregon parks department, so I'm assuming it's had low usage. It's in great condition.

You'll need to open it up and investigate. A multimeter would be very helpful in diagnosing. You'll the electrical schematic on the inside. Use that to trace the problem. These are pretty simple machines so I'd consider the capacitors going bad firstly then move on from there.
