fanime1 human trafficking of a young high school girl in a 1st world country is rare no human trafficker would take the risk of abducting a girl and risking every law enforcement agency in that country coming for her it’s not practical human trafficking is a big business in impoverished countries and sometimes in low income areas in 1st world countries but that’s also quite rare. Most likely she was abducted by a creep and probably murdered sadly that is really the only possibility in a particular case like this. Keeping her alive would be a big risk

I’m a victim of grooming so I’m pretty sure this is what happened to her. The reason that none of her calls were able to be traced is because she likely called the person through Snapchat or something like that. Groomers love to use those apps because the messages disappear after a certain time frame and nothing is traceable. Kik is also commonly used because it’s mostly anonymous. I’m pretty sure whoever was on the phone with her convinced her to come live with him or visit (yes, groomers often do this) because she was naive, shy, had low self esteem, and was likely depressed. The groomer used this to his advantage and manipulated her. There’s also a high chance that foul play was involved. Such a sad case.

My theory: She was talking to a guy and got groomed for human trafficking or she might be in someone’s basement at the moment.
The trafficker convinced her he was a good guy and that they would just go on vacation for “a while” to the city - hence she talked about going to the bigger cities -.
Last minute (on the day of her disappearance) the guy comes up with an excuse that he is late and that she might even have to take the bus, he advises her to get money at the bank for a bus ticket and some food, knowing she probably wouldn’t ask a friend since he/she would be in school by then.
This is where the ‘observing stage’ begins. The guy (or a team) observe Mekayla to make sure she is alone and not followed by anyone. Then another easy excuse that she has to wait at Horton’s and he’ll be there soon. That’s why she still looks at the door in case he comes in. (Notice how she leaves through the backdoor again, I’m almost sure she was instructed to do so, just like at school.) He then keeps her waiting while he (or his team) observe her and look at her behavior. Once satisfied that she is alone and obeyed his earlier instructions, the middle stage begins. The guy (or team) get into position to double check that she is alone by taking control of her actions and telling her what to do: 1) go to school and make sure some friends know she’s going on vacation (Mekayla still thinks she is at this stage), 2) with another excuse like: oh there’s traffic it’ll take a while before I get there, he tells her to go to the bus station to check when the next bus will leave for her destination, which he already knows is 5pm. 3) third instruction: go eat something.
His observer(s) have visually confirmed that she is alone. His instructions add security because no cop or federal agent would just let the bait walk around to the criminal’s instructions, that’s far too dangerous.
Knowing his grooming worked, he sends her a final instruction to go somewhere (with no cameras).
    He picks her up…

I went to that school, and every year on the day she disappeared the school does a special prayer for her safe return. Her missing poster hangs on the school board. Our town along with her family holds vigils for her. She has a massive reward for information or her return. I heard rumours from a friend that she ran away on a bus but it is said she never bought a ticket. Definitely an interesting and depressing case. To this day it chills me. I think the reason why she was sporadically "leaving" Tim Hortons was that she was checking the parking lot for a car.
I also think it's possible that she doesn't want to be found. She did have a history of self-harm, posting about loneliness, talked about traveling. She might've told her friends that her acne medication were hard drugs in an effort to impress them (she also hung out with smokers). It's possible that she was just a very lonely kid who felt dissatisfied with her life and wanted to start a new one. When i was in college I worked at a very popular diner at the junction of two interstate highways, that would have young people turn up alone, hitchhikers with backpacks, little money and who would sit in the booths for hours. Personally, I think that she felt really lonely, either at her house or with her social life, most likely the latter because she said that she didn't have any friends, despite obviously having some. I am so sure she was making plans to meet someone. Her body language suggests that it's someone she never told anyone about, someone whose identity she wanted to keep private. She was somewhat unhappy in her personal life and this "person" gave her some purpose, so, as a young, naive child she didn't see that there maybe something sinister going on, as there are traffickers and groomers who are experts at their field. I can see this as I see myself in her at 16, I displayed the same body language and behaviour, and i was talking to someone much older. He also made me move to different places in order to avoid detection, and i didnt think much of it....Unfortunately, I don't think it ended well for her, she was either sold into trafficking or is no longer alive, she was disposed off after she vanished.

I feel like she met someone online, maybe even in league of legends. I've always said that online relationships are a dangerous thing, because you never truly know someone unless you've met them. And that's where the danger comes in. Sometimes the moment you realize someone isn't who they said they'd be, is already too late in these scenario's.
My theory is, she met someone online who made her walk around and do all these things (while calling through and app so it won't show in the call logs). He made sure she wasn't followed and just observed her from a distance, maybe even made her walk around to make sure she was tired and couldn't resist. Then when it was time he made her walk to a place without camera's, and that's when she realized she was in big trouble, but it was already too late.
The "I need help" to her friend 100% was a call for help because she might have have a suspicious after the guy kept making her wait and kept making her walk around. And the message after "nevermind, i figured it out" sealed her fate, because she probably told herself "Stop thinking so negative, it's fine".

Good for you, she was looking for money, and many other people (especially elderly) who had been minding their own business would probably be glad to go back to minding their own business instead of potentially being dragged into trouble or a shame. It is Canada and a liberal, passive attitude of how people conduct themselves is considered the norm. These days you can even get dragged down for showing concern for others.
However the blame belongs on whomever murdered, conspired, or abducted her. Not random strangers. If you do end up in a situation like that though, I think the actions you would chose to take would be fine, and I would sincerely hope it would help the person (versus getting yourself into any kind of trouble).

I personally think the guy made her walk around and follow his commands, maybe pretending that he was late or stuck in traffic or something. Telling her to "maybe check the bus station how much a ticket costs" etc. But in the meantime he (or a team) was observing her to make sure she was alone and wasn't with someone or working with police to catch the groomers.
Once they realized she was indeed alone, they lured her to a place without camera's and that's when they took her. She probably realized at this point that the man wasn't who he said he was, but it was too late. I really do hope she's somehow still alive and fine though.

Seems like part of a pretty sophisticated network that knew exactly how to not leave a trace online for the feds to track. Hope they don't let this case go cold. I doubt she could've gotten that far on her own with no money or car at that age without getting caught on camera or kidnapped by another random creep.

She wasn’t able to/didn’t want to tell her family and decided running away would be an easier option. I theorise the other person involved didn’t want the hotel booked in his name. it seemed to me like she was waiting to be picked up in the wendys but they never came. so she went to get the bus. so it seems like she voluntarily left, even if she was later kidnapped or whatever.
when she told her friend "help" maybe she would tell her that someone was going to pick her up but now she needs either a place to stay or a way to get there. she figured she'd stay in a hotel or go by bus.
maybe she wanted a room for the night so she'd have a place to stay without going back home (she had already said shed leave that day) and they'd pick her up the next day. she didnt get any help, apparently, so she went herself by bus.
maybe she wanted the old lady to do the transaction so she wouldnt appear in the recipe or whatever.
still just looks like she is leaving for a trip, leaving no trace. i could probably try the same thing and look weird in the footage.
the fact that no other clue came after is the problem: she doesnt seem that weird from the footage or maybe chats to not use social media ever again. so kidnapping is the most likely answer.
those people who claim have met a nice girl and had a nice chat dont seem that likely then, since its likely shed have a normal life and kept using the internet.

Obviously whether she really knew who she was meeting or was being catfished, the person got cold feet a few times and left her hanging. Which explains her asking for a hotel room, taking out her battery, or texting friends she be going back to shcool. I bet he went into the restaurant to get a lay of the land to snoop out a sting operation. And finally got her to meet her in a way more secluded area with few or no cameras. And took her. Lastly there was a guy in that restaurant that looks suspicious, sitting a few places behind her at a booth.

I believe she met someone online and she either planned to meet them, or run away with them. Of course she seemed anxious/nervous in the footage. She didn't want anyone to find out, like her family or friends. Explains why she was being so vague too. Seems like whoever she was going to see didn't show up on time (or at all for the day), so she figured she'd rent a room for the night first and continue waiting. If she was trying to rent a room online, she asked the old lady because she doesn't have a credit card and could have told the lady to book the room for her, and she'd pay the lady in cash. Lady refused her because it seemed sketchy, especially for a girl her age, to make such a request. I think Mekayla got impatient, or too nervous that she'd be seen by someone she knows, and left to go TO the person instead of waiting for them.
Now who is was supposed to meet could be anyone. Maybe a boy around her age she wanted to have a relationship with? Or a pedo who possibly groomed her, and eventually kidnapped her. She's young, insecure, and vulnerable. Grooming her would be so easy for some predators.
Or in the end, she ran away with someone at least temporarily, and decided to start a new life. No kidnapping. She just wanted to get out of town and never look back, for her own personal reasons.

I’m from Regina Saskatchewan, many young girls have been groomed and preyed upon, lots of parents are very irresponsible and let it happen. Heard a lot of stories about weirdos and addicts who are on social media.

it makes sense to me that people in her life can't tell anybody anything about what happened here. i see a lot of myself in mekayla, and its obvious to me that she was secretive about her life on the internet to a very dangerous degree. those 'online friends' that were mentioned offhandedly were probably a MUCH larger part of her life than she let on to anybody, and they were probably grooming her for human trafficking. sometimes online friendship is a person's whole life when they don't like their situation and/or are extremely depressed. its an escape into a world where you're better spoken, funnier, and the people around you appreciate and like you more. as someone who was groomed online as a kid, it would be easy to isolate a kid like this from everything mentally enough to make her disappearance possible.

Worst case scenario: she was groomed by an older man, and he got her.
Best case scenario: she was a depressed teenager who ran away and is living her best life somewhere in a big city.
Unfortunately it's probably the first one, but I hope its the second.

I would like it to be the best-case scenario but why was she looking around like she was trying to find someone? If I was going to run away I wouldn't go to a restaurant and hang I would just go you know. I think she planned to run away with someone else online...think about it. She's just 16 and needs someone else to run away with.

Why does every time something bad happens it always starts with “didn’t take her seriously” 🤦🏽‍♂️. Whoever didn’t listen, let her down.

Isaac Rodriguez It's very unlikely high school students take it serious when their classmate says their going to vacation to a city out of the blue. I don't blame them.

It was teachers that didn’t take her seriously too. Besides that, teachers need to work on being someone students can confide in. So many people have a tough high school experience at it’s crucial adults stay actively involved especially because kids are most impressionable at this age. Just really think about how listened to one adult to make her go missing when that one adult could have been a mentor at the school instead. All i’m saying.

In middle school we had two teachers who were being inappropriate with young girls in the class. There was one specific teacher we reported several times (literally all the girls in class reported this man) The school did nothing. I’m older than this girl, but it’s only been a recent thing where people could even openly discuss this type of behavior from adults. Even up into the early 2000s it really wasn’t something you discussed and if you did, most of the times it was just brushed off.
At least it was with any experience I’ve ever had or with anyone I knew at the time.
It is truely horrifying how many people are willing to look the other way in general. Doesn’t matter if I t’s self harm, domestic abuse, grooming, ect. Indifference, fear, apathy, or even acceptance from others as just the “norm”. If no ones discussing these things, but it’s happening to tons of people (and it always was), people just think “this must just be normal”
As an adult I know now none of the grooming or abuse is normal and that there are people who care, but as a child/young girl/young woman, abuse is suffocating.

As a single parent myself, I blame the parenting. If your kid is self-harming that should already raise red flags. The simple fact is that kids who are happy at home don't self-harm and don't meet up with strangers.
Selfish parents will often blame everything and everyone except themselves. "It's social media's fault, it's the world's fault" etc.
No. As a parent you're supposed to be three steps ahead of all that crap. You're supposed to be preparing your child for the real world and preventing the problems in the world.
I get that what I'm saying might seem cold, but it's true.

The last sentence of the first paragraph is wrong asf. Things happen, and parents make mistakes. They should've monitored her more, but helicopter parents lose their kids too.

And you should know what kind of apps your child has. Some people say that's controlling but it's really not. It's for safety. Her messages can't even be traced because she used apps that the messages delete. You have to monitor your kid as long as they are still a minor under your roof otherwise you're just asking for trouble.
