    So in other words, if they want 1 miles... make it where you can do 2. If they want 50 push ups, get used to 100. If they want a 15 minute run, make it a 12

    Train to pass the graduation minimum.
    Build your cardio and endurance too.

    I'm a Security Officer Sergeant trying to get into one of the Local Police Departments. Your Videos have been a huge treasure trove of information. Super informative and super helpful. I work with Cops at my site daily, and One of the PD Officers was saying that his department hired a guy that did the bare minimum on all his physical requirements once he entered the Police Academy. The Police Academy eventually contacted that Department and he was let go. I'm trying to be MORE than ready for my next Public Safety Test physically. I did Awesome on the writing, reading, and video testing. Anyhoo, keep doing what you're doing, your vids have been great! Thank you!

      +TheFalconLair At the end of the day what makes a good cop are the same things that make good employees anywhere. Effort, common sense, self-supervision... If he didn't put forth the effort at the academy what does that say about how he is going to be when he gets out? I'm glad you like the videos brother. Keep your chin up and follow your dreams. It sounds like you already have the right attitude to succeed in any career path.

  • @BRASSTACKS
    @BRASSTACKS Před 7 lety +98

    I just took the WA physical test and the OR test. I'll help give an idea of what you need to do.
    Roughly 30 sit ups in one minute
    Roughly 25 push ups
    1.5 mile run in roughly 14:00
    300 meter sprint in 55 seconds
    Take those and improve on them just to be safe ^^

    • @BRASSTACKS
      @BRASSTACKS Před 7 lety +3

      Also, some departments just have an obstacle course. In Oregon they have the ORPAT, you can search it on CZcams

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  Před 7 lety +8

      +Champagne Levi yep, watch those pd's that only have an obstacle course though. I saw one guy who was jacked pass the obstacle course and get DQed at the academy because nobody told him he had to take a state test at the academy that involved a mile and a half run and sit and reach. Gotta do your homework.

    • @BRASSTACKS
      @BRASSTACKS Před 7 lety +3

      free field training ha, that's terrible. The obstacle course was a little too relaxed IMO. I took the WA test and took the OR obstacle course 15 minutes later, I'm not in great shape but was able to pass easily. Definitely won't prepare me for 3 mile runs in the academy

    • @anthonychase6906

    If you want to be a police officer in Southern California and pass the Academy... You better go into the Academy being able to run 5 miles at a 9 minute mile pace. You should be able to do 75 push-ups, 100 sit-ups and a minimum of 5 pull-ups... If you can do what I listed going into the Academy... Then you'll have no problems with the physical fitness part of the Academy.

    Pretty good advice for life tbh: anything is better than nothing. Physical fitness promotes mental fitness and vice versa. And you *do* want to be that cop that never lets the guy get away unless he/she is some kind of freak-of-nature ninja. It must be a huge blow to any LEO's self-esteem and working life to get beat down by a perp.

    • @brabhamfreaman166
      @brabhamfreaman166 Před 7 lety +1

      free field training Trust me to miss the key point: such a situation could end your career if said lunatic perp, like many career criminals, hate cops, they're not going to leave when they've got the opportunity to get away, they're gonna give you a beatdown long after you're rendered defenceless. Btw, I have a cousin in LE in the U.K. but no real direct connection, just all the respect in the world for what you do and why you do it. Just a few weeks into the job working the beat, my cousin saved the life of a bridge jumper by leaning out over and holding onto him for 20 mins til backup arrived, and, throughout, this guy is cussing and screaming "f**k off pig, just lemme go and die, f you!" Etc, etc. And when all was said and done, he wound with a Chief Constable's commendation - a seriously high honour award *and* on visiting the jumper he'd saved in hospital, the guy thanked him (after hurling all that abuse) for saving his life.
      I bow my head to every single one of you for what is so often a thankless task.

    2. Find a Jiu-Jitsu Academy near you and join( you'll get all the cardio you need, plus you'll understand hand2hand combat/ground combat while using less lethal force better than ever)

  • @Serpentsevensix
    @Serpentsevensix Před 7 lety +1

    I feel running/cardio is especially important in physical fitness. I run a LOT and have been in multiple physical altercations. In some, the only reason l came out on top was because the dude gassed out before l did. Plus you're less likely to go into shock when the adrenaline dumps into your system.

The problem is, I'm only 22 and people tell me I'm too young and don't have enough "life experience". I went on a ride along and the lady officer kept telling me I need to go to school and apply again when I'm older, which is frustrating because I already know what I want to do with my life, so why would I wait? Is there anything I can do about this whole lack of "life experience" thing?

Now I’m not saying everyone should be fit even though I believe there should be no excuse for anyone to be unfit but its the choice they’ll make but if you want to be fat and can’t hold your ground and get kill. That’s going to be on you because you chose not to be physically fit. There a saying that I was told from a Police Officer who said “fake it until you make it.”

    I hate to butt in here and be the goat. But , I've been in the ghettos and I've seen the gangsta videos and I can tell you that the physical fitness of these people is far superior to most police officers. If I was going to be a peace officer I would make sure that I was in top physical condition at all times. Your personal safety and life depends on it. You can get mad at me if you want to but I'm just telling it like it is and speaking from real life experience.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  Před 5 lety

      That has far more to do with age than anything else. Your average new 23 year old cop or 19 year old soldier is in great physical shape too. Just like your average 40 year old criminal looks like crap.

    • @matthewjackson9615
      @matthewjackson9615 Před 5 lety

      I could easily argue against this. Even the military has acknowledged that the physical fitness of the new recruits is poor. I've been to some military bases right here in Texas and have seen young soldiers that are heavy. Granted, some of them are in outstanding physical condition. But I'm willing to settle this matter. Let me come to your police station and pick out a couple of fat cops and I bet I can do more push ups than they can and I'm almost 60 years old.

      +David DeBergh Most places weight training won't help much at the academy. Being strong and looking strong on the street has its advantages but at the academy you are going to need to do bodyweight workouts and cardio. Calisthenics is big at most police academies.

    you have cheated your audience on this post. this is not only good advice for pd candidates, but sensible advice for everyone. i like the part where you talk about excelling the min requirements for actual pd prospects, but what you say about fitness in general = don't let perfect become the enemy of good. wonderful thinking for the rest of us.
    i HAVE considered possibly joining the sheriffs reserve in my local county. only to serve the community. i don't care if i get paid or not. what are your thoughts on that, and fitness in general? i'm 55 now, so this may not be practical. i DO like rocketing around on my bmw r1100r, though, so mebbe that factors in.

      Sometimes we just bite off more than we can chew. There is no outward way of telling (other than cauliflower ear) that someone is going to be a good fighter. A homeless guy could be a former army ranger or an ex store clerk and there is no way to tell until you go hands on. We also can't just wait until there are three cops there to engage every situation. That could have started off as a complaint about a vagrant begging for money. The cop might have disregarded his backup so they could deal with a more pressing call because he has dealt with that same hobo many times before and the bum had never been violent in the past. If you do the job long enough it will happen to you. I'm glad there were good people there to help and that nobody got seriously injured in the scuffle.
