  • The Raddy RF919 AM FM Stereo LW Weather Alert AIR CB VHF UHF SSB Shortwave Portable Radio with Bluetooth and MP3 Player is brought out to see how it fairs on the Evening Medium Wave Band using its Internal Loopstick Antenna. The screens do produce RFI, and the designers tried their best by incorporating a manual antenna tuner to help deal with this. On a few occasions it helped. The Terk Advantage Passive Loops works well to reduce this Noise as well. When I get the External MW Loopstick, I will produce a video using that as well.

Overall, I find the radio has issues with internal RFI during the Evening, but it still usable on most frequencies using its manual antenna tuner. Pair it with a loop, and those issues will fade away. Direct connection of the Loop helps as well. That will be in another future episode :)

Thanks Todderbert I find if I leave mine in automatic it helps minimize some of the RF noise then put it manual when you find the station you want. I also find adjusting the eq to DAC-Analog minimizes the harsh hash.
I read that Raddy is now including their tri-band antenna and people who like me who took the pre-order option can email them to get one at no extra cost. I saw that on SWLing Post.
    73! Have a great day!

Yes, that is true. Just got mine, and have made a little video of it to upload. It's not a game changer like I thought it would be. The best is to use your long wire/passive loop/Twin Coil attached to the back jack...then you are in for a treat.

Don’t know what’s going on but Walmart is reducing prices on weather alert radios in store by half off. With all the storms this spring, nice to have one.

It does a bit of everything, some great, some not so much, but mostly a wonderful experience. Perfect for the Enthusiast. If you are looking for SSB SW, then a Tecsun will serve you best. I just had the RF919 hooked up to my C.Crane Twin Coil, and it was Awesome. Even logged a new low power evening station during the recording. Look forward to those videos.

I’m not a huge fan of nighttime reception reviews. For obvious reasons as any radio, even the worst available, will bring in signals on AM. During dark hours reception selectivity is key however. A real good idea of what a radio is capable of is obtained during daytime. Selectivity is less of a problem then but the sensitivity of a receiver can be clearly observed. Most of the times a cheaper radio will throw in the towel during the day trying to pull in distant or weak stations. Having said that, this radio seems a reasonable performer but it is in no way a radio that stands out at all. It is a sad fact that we now have to rely solely on Chinaman products. It is their strategy to dominate the world and they came really far. I haste to say that I’m on the Chinaman bandwagon as well but I try to avoid products from China as much as I can. Let’s hope we in the West learned enough by now and change our policies while we still can. Greetings from Hekelingen, Holland. Bye, Willem.

A loop as seen in this video has to be carefully placed next to or above the radio as close as possible to where the ferrite bar inside the radio sits. This is comfortably done by placing both the radio and the loop on a so called “Lazy Susan”. By doing this both the loop and the radio can be turned simultaneously so the loop stays in the same position for optimal reception. But again, during the dark hours many stations will come in so in most cases a loop won’t show what it is capable of during daylight. And some seem to forget that also a loop needs at least some usable signal that it can give a boost. My Tecsun/Kaito passive loops do a great job for radios that can use a boost due to too short built in loopsticks. For real good radios like the Sony ICF-2010/2001D these loops are an insult, these type of high end (and now old) radios do not need it.
