Do you like these MTB trends or think they're a terrible idea? Did we miss any? Let us know in the comments!
How about the Bold Unplugged
29er wheels , the worst and senseless trend ever. Same goes for 27,5. Just greed of profit for global corporations, not more or less. 26 wheels were always sufficient and adequate in MTB section and still deliver significantly more useful advantages in comparison to 29er or 27,5 wheels. Large wheels belong to road, not MTB
. ;)
@@RpgmaniacNo1 I rode my brother on a bicycle. He with 29 and I with 26 ... we took the road and mountain ... I felt more difficult than him ... more on the road ... and on the mountain, but also because he had bicycle gear and I had no gear. bicycle...
@@RpgmaniacNo1 but with your little 26 inch wheels, you got less grip when you use the same tire in the same widh with the same pressure, and you are so slow through rough sections, when a 29er just rolls over it, so it's not dum or useless! Everybody should ride the bike and wheelsize he likes, and I havent said that the Bikes are the greatest and best because of the 29ers, it was just about the look and beeing different than a Session or Slash.
@@3ndur1st_67 Grip you say......Most riders don't really trust the grip and it's also a question of the personal skill , so I don't think you can assess this aspect subjectively, Judoka. Fact is the physical aspect of rotating mass and in terrain, the 26er win. The power train ( Impulse at the start ) is faster because the wheels are smaller, you ride more nimbler ( more manoeuvrable ) because the wheels are smaller... ;) Besides, 26er wheels are stiffer, ligher, is faster, less damages so less maintenances..... any objections? ;) But of course everybody shall ride the wheels he likes. But in my opinion it's wasted money because there's any rational reason to buy 29er or 27.5.
Calling bikes at 3000 quid + 'budget friendly', 'value' or 'beginner bikes'.
That should be called "relatively budget friendly." Its still a ton of money, but when you realize that Enve will sell you a set of wheels for nearly that much 3000 seems reasonable for an entire bike.
Once more for the people in the back! No way in hell I can drop that to get my toe into the sport.
matt go on pink bike buysell. I bought a Stumpjumper Evo for 1200 in March and it has served me well but you just gotta make sure that the bike is good before you buy
yeah. GMBN really need to adjust their idea of what a budget or mid range bike is
That's an easy trend to ignore; just buy a bike costing half that and be happy. An aluminum hardtail with a mid-range fork will tackle all of the riding most people will ever do. Channels like this contribute to the problem, featuring professional athletes weekly doing what for most people would be once-in-a-lifetime trips. Entertaining as that is, most of the content in places like this is not really relevant to most of us.
Be a contrarian: ride a bike that works for the riding you do, even if it's not expensive. There are people out there shredding their local trails on single speed fully rigid bikes; that might not be for you, but if it works for them, think of all the maintenance and money they save, to say nothing of weight.
$3k bikes being referred to as budget friendly
Facts i donât even know if I can continue with this sport at this point
Random Ryder the ultra high end is nice but not that much better. Just buy a bike that you can afford and donât be upset about what others are doing or buying. Itâs not all about the bike, itâs about how you ride it. Also, there are pro deals available if you know the right people and a good secondhand market. If you bought a top end dirt bike/ sport bike like you can with mountain bikes, youâd also pay a tremendous amount. Not having an engine doesnât make bicycles any less high tech.
@@gradywb Do you know how much dirt bikes actually cost? A brand new Yamaha YZ250F starts at $8,200. Yeah $3k is a lot of money, but how often do you buy a new bike? Also make buying a nice bike a priority. Skip out on other luxuries to save up. Don't go to the movies or go out to that fancy restaurant.
I love coming to these comments and seeing a bunch of broke bitches complain. Buy a used and older bike. Finance it. Sell your other shit. So many ways to get that bike and most people just come to CZcams to cry. Why do you need the newest bike? Are the newest model of XT brakes gonna make you a pro racer? Do you really need the latest piece of suspension tech? Maybe the issue isn't that bikes are expensive, but this community thinks that they need to have the latest and greatest tech on their bike. I ride a 2013 Kona Process. I guarantee I'm faster than some people on a 2020 Spec Enduro. I also guarantee I'm slower than the 50 year old on his rigid bike from before I was born.
@@trevor42699 one other way is stop drinking & smoking, my drinking & smoking costs over 6k a year, i can have 1 of these bikes EVERY YEAR if i quit !
Trevor P man, every time I call out âbroke bitchesâ like you just did, I get absolutely torn a new one. Apparently iâm a rich asshole who has no sense of reality, and not a guy who likes riding nice bikes and drives around in an old reliable car, doesnât go on vacations all the time, go out for meals all the time etc. Ironically I get the impression most of the people who tell me that probably make a lot more money than I do. I just think that the thing you should spend the most money on is the thing you love the most, but big box stores have taught the majority that bikes should be disposable and look good, but not necessarily to be reliable or safe, rather than buying an affordable really nice used bike.
Trends that suck:
-Changing standards for no valid reason (press-fit bb, boost etc)
-Over-pricing everything
-Marketing wank
-Elitism
totally agree!! mtb has so many standards that is stupid. you have only a few overpriced choices if you want to build a bike. they are like apple
press-fitt bb and boost are usefull changes for the top 1% of riders, is't only sad that the rest of us trying to just have a good time are forced to follow these changes.
Now that I'm on boost it better not change lmao. No super boost! And threaded bb for life.
@@bobvelting379 boost is a very usefull change for everyone, since 29" wheels are on market. it makes the wheels lot more stable
Coming from road cycling, I would say that elitism in MTB is quite mild.
The lycra dudes won't even look at you, if your kit doesn't have enough logos and your glasses aren't reflective enough. And don't even get me started on carbon.

true, but you CAN make your own battery packs pretty easily, and mod an existing frame into an ebike by adding a motor
Of course it doesnât. Economics 101, supply and demand.
Especially road bikes, I can't seem to figure out what technology they have that is so expensive that they cost more than full suspension mountain bikes
wow fr do you not understand how business works? the company has to pay for supplies and things like carbon and suspension on top of supply and demand stuff
Development and marketing. That's the two major costs for a manufacturer, not production.

Pick two
@@GTChucker86 Lightweight isn't always strong or stiff
Strong isn't always lightweight or cheap.
MaMamsYo There are always exceptions to the rule but the main basis is that there is only two choices to pick from those three factors and money is always the deciding factor. Enveâs are strong and light but are extremly expensive sure they arenât bomb proof but they do have warranty and its not easy to break a pair even if you tried. Stans flow rims is slightly cheaper and heavier but they are strong for some hard hitting use. I run Jetset 33mm downhill rims on my bike and they are cheap but are literally bomb proof but they weigh more than the entire earth, My old XC weinmann rims were competitively light and just as cheap but have the strength of an uncooked noodle in comparison to my DH Rims. Stans flow on the other hand are as strong as my Jetsets and are lighter than my weinmanns but those rims cost more than both combined. Its relative
Some of us abhor idea that riding around a 30lbs bike is normal. Gotta weight weenie to make that bike I the fun zone weight.
@sv650Sftw dont adulterate Bruce Lee. Light bikes are faster, more nimble, and more fun. End of story.
Making a bike that you already own hard to upgrade by changing sizes, standards and tools required to fit them.
My bike is only two years old but has a qr rear wheel and a straight steerer tube and isn't boost.
All three of those standards are at least 5 years old. My bike has qr and a straight steerer tube but I bought it new in 2019.
I was surprised my '13 Trek Cobia was so outdated for the same reasons you mentioned. I want to upgrade it to 1x12 but after I get done paying to replace all the incompatible parts to fit a QR frame, I could just buy another hardtail!
@@Scoho2098 Hah then if you wanna see troubles getting parts, just look at us 26ers! I'm rebuilding one rn, and good grief the cheapest set of tires I can find in stock online that are an actual upgrade to the ones I have on it would cost more than I paid for the bike and parts bin upgrades!
I have a 2012 bike that features boost, a tapered headset, and thru-axles! This is one of the risks involved with cheaper bikes.
People who watch CZcams and think that everything someoneâs says on CZcams is the what you need to do.

So when I started taking my on road bike through the wood land paths in 1989 it was essentially a gravel bike.
To enable us to spend more time out and about and travel further we used bumbags. Then we added saddle bags to strap things to bikes as we needed more and wanted to avoid carrying a bag.
Now, nearly 30 years later they seem to have been discovered as new things.

#1 Trend that sux: over-materialization of sport. This can be seen in your list partly based upon the importance of looks, such as "does this bike look like...", or "what do we think of oil slick". People post about taking two years to build their dream bike so that they can afford the most expensive components. Is the most expensive component going to make them better enough to compensate for the time they didn't ride? Even the headache from internal cable routing...... How much faster can I throw a pre-blead shimano brake on my bike than have to try to get my SRAM brakes working properly? I am not swapping the brakes because of internal cable routing. My cables are internal mostly because of looks. It is like my damn iMac - much less functional just so that it looks pretty when not using it. Lets get back to the making functionality the primary concern.
Preach my dude
I dont even know what brand my pedals are and I'm sure as i break parts i will commit the cardinal sin of mixing brands of parts because i simply dont care what the bike looks like just how it performs and whats in my price range at the time
The trend in northern California where mtb guys and moto guys are peacefully sharing trails is a trend I'd like to see get bigger!
That's a good trend. Sadly the trend in Colorado has been to set booby traps for mountain bikers, if not outright murder them. Some nutcase murdered a mountain biker with an axe last year in CO :( There were also several assaults against bikers on trails as well :(

Those who dislike pedal assist ebikes but ride a motorized chair lift to get to the top of their downhill trails.
I have no problem with ebikes and think it's a great way for people to get on a bike if they were unable to before. That being said, I hate all this stuff about Ebike racing. I saw something about an Ebike EWS and thought it was the stupidest thing ever. The whole point of the EWS is to push a rider to the limits of their endurance and then force them to bomb down a mountain.
Yeah, the guys who rag on ebikes, but then ride a chairlift to the top of their DH run, total hypocrites haha. Most of us don't have ready access to lift assisted bike parks, and we have to earn our downhills the old fashioned way, the ebike just gets you more runs down the hill before you're too tired.
David Fitzpatrick I wish for neither an e bike or a chairlift. They might be ok for those who âcanât climbâ. I enjoy spending time on my bikes. Where I ride, I can spend 70% or more of my time climbing. I enjoy climbing as much as descending. We might as well accept it and improve at it! Its inevitable! Youâd have more fun this way! Climbing gives you a chance to look around and see the beauty that surrounds you.
Having been racing Cyclocross at the same time clunkers were skidding down Mt Tam, I definitely think 'Gravel Bikes" is BS marketing hype.
I just recently got into biking a year ago and my first bike was a gravel bike. I use it to commute, under 15 Mile road rides, gravel, grass, light dirt trails. Basically everything a cross bike will do, but with a slightly more relaxed geometry. I'll probably never own a true road bike, as I use this to get to work/school and I enjoy mtb over road for fun rides.
Using cross/gravel bike to commuted is so nice because I can cut thru grass or dirt shortcuts and not have to worry about my bike slipping out from under me. I run 38s on it.
agreed, "gravel bikes" have been around much longer then MTB, and should be called for what they are..cyclocross bikes. Calling it a trend is an insult to a sport thats much much older then mountainbiking.
@@dodecahedron1 If they've still got skinny wheels & curly bars, then they're road bikes for the whippets. The only real difference between a gravel bike & a cyclocross bike is 2 or 3 decades of technology. A modern mountainbike bears little resemblance to my first MTB back in 1989, but they're still mountainbikes. In the hills round here they're ALL pushbikes if you're going uphill. đ
Gravel bikes are another stupid marketing ploy. Youâre much better off with a decent XC mountain bike. Especially if youâre going to be riding on dirt roads. A gravel bike sounds ideal until you hit some wash board; and then youâll be begging for suspension forks. Wash board is brutal and can stop you in your tracks. With a decent mountain bike, you can still ride on a road and then you have the versatility to ride off-road as well. Gravel bikes donât have that versatility; theyâre more of a one trick pony.

26" needs to stay alive!!!
26â is still alive! I would guess theres probably more 26â MTBs in the world than most anything else. Theres still plenty of new tires, replacement parts and used bikes available. The older Japanese and US made steel frames were often of a much better quality than most of the Chinese made junk today. If you do a little research and know what to look for, incredible deals are out there! Especially if you have skills for repairs and restoration. I still own and ride the heck out of 3 26â mtbs.

It was supposed to fall off so his competitors would slip.
Im 6'4" & have long arms & legs. I like the super long bikes.
I'm 5 & a half foot with short arms & legs. I ride as small as I can get with 24 inch wheels, the shortest stem I can find and a decent rise (about 3 inches atm) bar. I need to keep my spine vertical or I can't ride at all, but my options are being whittled away by companies constantly changing standards. I have no use whatsoever for waggon wheels.
The intelligent choice for companies that want to keep customer loyalty is make stuff to fit people, large frames longer & small frames shorter. There's not that much difference in standover these days so why not catch a greater market share by actually fitting more people? Common sense is not appropriately named any more. đ
Trends that should stay: 1x drive trains, dropper posts, wider bars and better flat pedals.
Trends that could go: not keeping with a uniform standard.
What gets me is the new 148mm boost rear, why exactly did they need a new standard just 2mm shy of a downhill standard we've had for more than 20 years?!? That was the point at which I said "no more!" It's just '80s style wide boys trying to bend everyone over, well they can bite me (though I'll probably smack them if they do đ).
Some other ideas:
- Enduro bikes moving away from a bike you'd want as you're only bike.
- Gravel bikes getting lazier and softer and fatter tyred - the speed and edginess of a cyclocross bike is what makes it great - basically a fast-feeling road bike with the toughness to take abuse off road is ideal imo.
- Whips being the defining skill of a stylish rider - time for something new
- MTB copying moto and calling it original
What you said about enduro bikes . 100% agree.
What you said about moto 100%
wider tires are now known for a fact to be faster rolling when it comes to riding bumpy surfaces. even up to like 2.4-2.5" so I'm not surprised they would be getting fatter. skinny and horribly weak tires are pretty much only going to be faster on paved roads.
but personally, i think the entire cyclocross/gravel/road bike lycra wearing scene as a whole is ridiculous
what you said about whips: Agree 100%
The last one is the most true thing I have ever seen in a long time. Bicyclists say, " Oh We weRe FIrsT!" Yea, so? But, if you think about it, motocross, supercross, etc. were first to come out with most of the tricks that you see on bicycles, so techniqually, moto was first, for tricks at least.
It's all B.S.
I have no more fun today than when I started in 1988 on my raleigh Maverick.
Seen so many fads and trends come and go.
None of them change the buzz of mtb
I definitely get fewer punctures than I did 20 years ago. I also think suspension has improved enough that neck strain is no longer the limiting factor on rides.
"Just send it". Quite possibly the worst advice to give to a beginner ever.
The Dude itâs the worst way to tell someone to have confidence
You send it after a few look overs and maybe a couple slow rides.
Gotta work up confidence first
It's definitely used a lot as a joke with skaters.
Just roll it.
Terrible saying in any situation
The trend that really sucks is idiots hating on bike parts because of their color.
The trend that sucks the most, is the trend towards not having any "standards" for anything any more. I mean, having a billion different wheel sizes, bottom brackets, axle types, axle lengths, steerers, headsets, freehubs, cassettes etc.. is just a massive pain in the arse.
totally agree !
Yeah, but it's not hard to find compatible stuff if you understand these "standards".
@@th_js i understand the standards, they just keep changing too quickly.
@@th_js Lol I understand them just fine, like OugaBooga said they just change too quickly (which kinda makes them not "standards" at all, hence my original point). It's completely pointless investing in a bike with the idea of upgrading / replacing parts as they wear out anymore as chances are by the time they need changing at least one of them will no longer be available in the same "standard" your bike uses. Not a problem if you can pull 5 grand out your ass every couple of years for a new bike, but for us mere mortals on real world wages being able to get new parts 3, 4 or 5 years down the line that actually fit is a pretty big deal.
As for not hard, I challenge you to find a new set of 140mm+ travel 26" wheel sized forks with a straight 1 1/8th steerer and 9mm QR dropouts please. This would have been a piece of piss a few years ago, but I don't seem to be able to find any now apparently due to my lack of understanding of standards, but as you find it so easy to find "compatible stuff" maybe you could source me a set? đ€Ł
@@jacobwise6073 Okay, I couldn't find the exact one, but this one has everything except 9mm QR. www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/rockshox-sektor-gold-rl-26-dual-position-coil-150-830984

The terms 'slack' and 'progressive' seems to be on everything...
Industry buzz words, designed to part people from their hard earned. I tried slack once, was a mistake. I put a Marzocchi Z150 fork on a small Orange MsIsle frame I picked up second hand. It was a beast when you pointed it downhill, but just getting from A to B was a nightmare - it was constantly trying to steer itself off to the side with the head angle being so 'slack'. I guess you do these things when you're young, got to learn somehow! đ
Who cares what a bike looks like? I care what it rides like and how much of a nuisance it is to maintain.
I dunno, that (insert color) on black wheels is always nice.
@matthew leo exactly!! I've been fortunate to have the same bike for 10 year's! & it's still like new & rides great...bike shopes are always impressed because it was relatively inexpensive but built like a tank!
What happens when there are two bikes that ride equally well and are both low-maintenance? Would you not choose the better-looking one of the two?

âBum bagâ aka âFanny packâ - you have it tightened on the trails and all the way loose over one shoulder like a messenger bag at the âpubâ aka âclubâ
Neon Clothing is good when you have crossing trails with lots of trees.
I reckon oil slick looks sick, especially with a black frame and tan walls
Enduro straps = getting mud and gritt all over my tube, co2 and tirelevers, I need a framebag for my stuff....đ€
I think I've noticed that you guys (as a whole) are being more patient and allowing your co-presenter all the time they need to express their ideas. You (and we) are better for it... good on you! ;)
Boost hubs (i.e., the ever-evolving BS standard) making older wheels and forks harder to replace/upgrade.
I've been a fanny packer for a few years? OMG I am dying inside haha!
lol brits
I think two by doesn't suck! A nice bashring to keep your pants from getting sucked into the chain and a nice light rear wheel not clogged up by huge pie plate cassettes and terrible chainlines!
Yeah, 2x10 on my XC hardtail does the job perfectly well. Admit 1x has helped frame designers with tire clearance and stronger suspension linkages though.
Its a mental game really. 2x is fine for chill rides but for active rides its better to run a drivetrain thats a lot more simple in the long run. 1x is an innovation i still love
1X is much better for aggressive trail riding... Have you tried it? If you're riding is more flowy or XC, then 2X is okay.
1x makes for better rear suspension design. No more need to think about a bad compromise on how it will work based upon what the cranks are turning.
Henry has really grown into a great presenter. I enjoy his videos now. His personality is showing more.
I know I'll take heat, but I love the look of a Cannondale Lefty. It makes a classic geometry look new and interesting. Especially the new Ocho with the single crown. I'm in love! Fight me.
Cannondale has always done quirky fork designs. I remember the Cannondale headshocks back in the 90s, rigid style fork, with the shock built into the headstock.
We just bought a lefty cannondale a week ago. It's a monster of a bike :)
Lefties are đ„đ„đ„, and I always wanted one. Never say never.
Put up your dukes!
santa cruz v10 still rocks the same design from many years ago and it looks awesome
One trend that I could do without: Bike companies listing their products as ârevolutionaryâ and âgame-changingâ when itâs all marketing bull. If your product actually is gamechanging, people will know about it without you having to say it.
As someone over six foot who's old enough to remember the old fully-rigid MTB days, I can't say I miss the short, cramped bikes we used to have in the slightest. Long bikes and wide bars please!
Those oil-slick-finishes remind of the 90's with all their purple anodised tuning-parts.
Lol, I had a Specialized Jazz Voltage in purple and orange with anodized purple vertical bars on it.
No, my tastes haven't gotten better with age.
Splatter painted frames
Two words- Prism Tape.
oil slick?? really?? THat was a thing in the 80tees :O

I'm new to fanny packing, and I have to say: it feels good; front or back.
đđđđđ
Hilarious. 98% of Yanks missing the joke of course
When in the front, it doesn't feel very good with your personal equipment sandwiched between the bag and top tube. That's why they're called FANNY packs.

I love it when people confuse "trends" with personal taste. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant, it's whether the owner gets anything from it
Being an old scout I am guilty of carrying a small bike shop in my XL saddlebag.
2 inner tubes (on my tubeless wheels), multi-tool, CO2 x 2, tube patches, tire boot, multiple zip ties, chain link, nitril gloves, garbage bag (emergency rain coat), disc brake pads. It all weighs 2 pounds about 1 kilo.

2019 Oil slick everything, the 'trend' that the brand managers and marketeers got soooo wrong
I like some of the oil slick look as long as it's not every part on your bike
@@BerserkerNick yep, like just the pedals, or the bars, or a stem
Yeti bikes have that "switch infinity" thing, and they look freakin sweet
Fanny packs have caught on big time around here. more than half the riders i see have them now. and 90% are the new osprays. I love myn!
This is where practicality wins over appearance .
out door gear companies are rebranding them as "hip packs" or "waist packs"... personally, I augment mine by adding a removable toolbelt pouch. Anything I don't want stolen while away from the bike is kept on my person. Things I need immediate access to go in the pouch (keys, wallet, multitool, pen, spare change, my employee ID badge for work), while everything else goes in the zipped compartments in the waist pack (patch kit, rain pants, bike multitool, (if it starts raining, I move my wallet and phone into the waterproof compartment.
Some companies make waist packs from DCF (formerly known as Cuben fiber) which is lightweight and waterproof.
Agreed, I just bought an Osprey! LOL. Still will use my backpack for longer rides, for sure!!
Interesting, because outside of cycling, they still are a major fashion faux paux. Wearing one off a bike, might make you a bit too "stereotypical American tourist".
@@mrvwbug4423 Oh I fully agree! Don't know your locale, but i'm in America, and if you wear a fanny pack around town, you are a huge dork! LOL. I ONLY wear one on the trail. ; )
I think gravelbikes have been around much longer then mountainbikes. It originally was called cyclocross, or Fieldcycling, and the first WC was in France in 1950. It started being a thing around 1910. Its a real, serious sports, especially in Europe, and particularly in Belgium and the Netherlands. We all love mtb ofc, but gravelbikes have earned their place in the offroading community I would say
Gravel Bikes are great. The key is having the trail wheels with your 40mm tires and then also a second wheel set with 28mm tires for road and commuting etc. For my Cannondale Topstone I even have a third wheel set for fast road riding with 25mm s. I can honestly say that my Conti 4 season 28s are the best tires for Miami riding and the Topstone rides great on the road. At the same time, this past Sunday, we rode in a Gravel event and the 40mm tires and trail wheels ate it up, mud, water, and elevated hard gravel. I still use my hard tail on actual mountain bike trails.
We have to go to the extremes first before we can dial back a bit and make it perfect.
Oil slick needs to go away like it did in BMX. I thought I'd hate a fanny pack, but now I'm so glad I have one, backpacks can go DIAF
what is DIAF?
Chad down in a fuck? I honestly donât know either
Fanny packs. Lmao. I'll keep my Camelback and dignity, thanks.
Commencal clash does not look like a session but it preforms like a beast too.
A Gravel bike being a 90s rigid mtb (with dropbars and better brakes) is exactly why I want one.

I really loved how you included Marin and their "different style" and all comments related to that bike. I have looked to ride a demo of the Wolf Ridge or something comparable by Marin because I love my "old hardtail 29er" Bobcat Trail by Marin. But I also like the new design of that bike in the back. I believe it to be a little shallow to say that "all bikes should look the same."
The term enduro itself, we used to just call those rides...
aye brah enduro is life, enduro bros for ever. but in all seriousness enduro is just an excuse to ride a long travel on regular trails, I can't bitch about it cause I ride an intense tracer.

Enduro, for people not fit enough for xc, not gnarly enough for DH and not enough skill for trials đ€Ł
Enduro: climb a hill and then go down. Repeat. đ I do the same but i call it mountain biking.
a trend that still sucks is the piss poor size selection at the larger end, seems cycling clothing companies still think we are all 5'10 manlets with 42" chests.
I absolutely love my Camelbak Repack LR. Nice and stable, and perfect amount of storage for a standard ride.
Oh theyâre COMPLETELY practical and really useful, they just look horrible.

Bad trend: complaining about climate change while flying around the world.
Earth is billions of years old... season of bad bike weather and call it glabal warming
@@Harambe_ Show me the study that correlates fossil fuels to weather changes? They've gotten every prediction wrong and can't even predict the weather next week half the time. All through the 70s and 80s the same people were saying we were going into an ice age. Then they decided on global warming but their predictions kept being wrong.
