I Built A Mountain Bike Frame In My Garage! | Blake Builds A Hardtail MTB

- In this episode of Blake Builds, Blake Samson has decided to build his own hardtail do-it-all trail bike from scratch! The frame geometry was based on a Nukeproof Scout, and the tubing used was just cheap plain gauge steel so it's probably going to be quite heavy!

An ebike
A dual suss build would be incredible!!
A full sus
A downhill bike
Would love to see Blake REALLY flip the script and make himself a hydration pack, or some sort of storage bag/system for his new hardtail!
Not bikepacking, just general storage for tools and what not.
Bust out the sewing machine, Blake!
can we take a moment to appreciate they could've easily put this project into 4 episodes but didnt. cheers GMBN
@@willjones7132 calm down
@@willjones7132 if this your humour i like you
Ngl, I wish it was longer. This is a big project and it would have been cool to see more of the behind the scenes. That's just me though.
Nah I’d rather a series all published at once
"Human balance bike"
Babies do be extra-terrestrial these days hahaha
Awesome job, Blake!!!
I'm not saying that it would be an epic collab between you two, but mannnnn that would be great to see!
Epic Collab to make one out of HT steel next time? 👀
Yeah I think he need to get the frame to a shop for a heat treat asap the welds seem good but the bike frame needs to be annealed to actually make the bike safe
Cheers Alec. Turned out ok. Now can I turn it into a full suspension 😅😅😅
@@BlakeSamson8 I did welding on high school the bike looks great but..... The welds do need to be heat treated the frame will flex and depending on the gas used small holes can form in the welds or even a small crack could form
Expectations: He got a frame and is putting all the parts together.
Reality: He actually IS building a frame from scratch 😳
that is because so many people have used the term 'build' when the term they actually should be using is 'assembled.'
not once has anyone actually built a bike when they make that claim in the title.
well, not until now. Top job Blake!
It’s not easy. I had a friend who was an aircraft welder, metallurgist, and weld inspector and he built his own bikes. He still had trouble getting the welds to not break. Good bike builders are extremely skilled.
I had no idea he was building a damn frame 😂 he’s badass
I love these Blake builds series!
Regardless of what he's doing, Blake is my most favorite presenter on GMBN, such energy he has!
like Steve Irwin of mtb
How did he manage to be in such a good mood that whole time?! Usually when long builds go down with problems and frustrations that big bad moods always surface, but not Blake I guess
To be fair it was several days cut to about 15 minutes so I'm sure there was some swearing going on that didn't make the final cut. ;)
I love Blake, he is so cool and fun, a very good buddy. Good job man, most people can't even imagine how hard it is to do something like that, you are the best!
Oh hell, yes! Building my own frame is one of my wildest dreams!
You should do a build with Colin furze!! Imagine the crazy bikes you could come up with..
Yeah man a mtb collaboration with Colin Furze would be so damn amazing!
Exactly my thoughts
I feel serious safety tie vibes in Blake too! Just imageine the dynamics of that collab...
Kudos to you Blake for turning an idea into something physical that actually works without letting too many details get in the way :D.
And I was so impressed with myself for sanding down and repainting an old frame then building up from there... This is so freaking cool! 🤙
As a frame builder I'm very impressed with the result. There quite a few ways to make or improvise "non professional" comparison tools for the alignment.
This motivates me to get back to frame building. It's been over 3 years since I build my last frame.
Thanks for the content mate!
Thanks dude. Stoked to light that fire of yours back up.
That’s incredible!
Now I imagine how hard Ave Maldea's work actually is. Ave is a local frame builder here in the Philippines who specializes in fixie and roadbike frames. He doesn't have a big production line and does every welding joint by hand. Although he is experienced, he must have a really hard start as shown by Blake's struggles here. Massive respect to those who have small bike manufacturing shops.
Blake needs a raise bc he could easily go and make a CZcams channel on his own and make great content
I absolutely adore people who are capable of building their own stuff. Blake´s taking it to another level. Great Job and very entertaining!
Thanks. Love making stuff.
”It’s supposed to be dead straight, it’s not”
Well, that’s gonna be a funny bike to ride I can tell! It’s off by a bike length…. But a nice build for being the first. Makes you appreciate the quality of a bought one. It’s so incredibly difficult to make your own bike. I don’t think people in general understand how bloody hard it actually is.
Great work man, keep it up! If you get a TIG welder, some welding skills and build a proper rig, you’re home :)
OK Blake, here's something that might have helped you out aligning the head tube with no tools: get a long straight stick and attach it temporarily to the head tube so they're running parallel. now you can sight down the seat tube and the head tube and tell alignment to within a gnats foreskin.
Gnats are asexual cause that's what they teach in schools these days 🤣🤷🏻♂️
I love Blake‘s enthusiasm in the build projects. The result looks really good.
In an age of carbon exotic frames, there is also a beauty with simple steel hardtail frames
steel gang always, steel is awesome, steel is love, steel is life.
@@datutturugang666 you steel behind though
@@ramzichouk4080 yet, when people break their carbon frames, i steel keep mine
@@datutturugang666 lol i don't even own a bike
Absolutely brilliant mate ! Cant wait to see how it performs out there.
Amazing how cheap we can buy bikes really
@@gregski29 It may seem so. It sure looks really good but only a few dozen rides and time will tell how much adjustments and repairs of the frame will be required until Blake is truly satisfied with its performance. Im pretty sure he will have to put some additional work into it right after the first ride.....and after the second... ;-D
@@gregski29 well, if you get a budget aluminium bike (or steel BSO) then it'll _not_ have been welded by hand like Blake did here, but mostly by robots on a production line.
Usakuvara Blake..."Dont get hurt Blake" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was an absolute unit mate!
Don't bike much these days but still love these videos. BLAKES the man! 🤟
Great video Blake! Please make more blakebuilds becase it is so inspiring.
the fact that a lot of people aren’t even able to assemble a bike with parts and blake is even making his own frAme is just insane
The fact that he is an engineer helps. He is a really smart guy not just an average mtb'er. He's definitely one of my favorites to watch.
@@DrewJ79 i also like watching him
Absolutely AMAZING! great job Blake, waiting for the ride review, and for your next bike built!
I would've liked to have seen the components being fitted/installed into the frame.
Credit for having a go. Building a frame is not easy. A top effort.
Probably one of my favourite videos from GMBN! Really awesome work guys!
Awesome video dude thank You from me and my Channel! Wish you all the best! Can’t wait to see how it runs 🙏❤️👍⭐️
One of my favourite videos I've seen in ages. How proud you was Blake of the bottle rack just shows how you must feel about the completed build. I make ebikes so appreciate a bit of work. Well done mate. Great channel
Words fail me...in a good way...Awesome job Blake. Always wanted to build a steel bike frame(from the 1970’s). Love your DIY rig and applied skills. Look forward to see how it rides.
My favorite GMBN episode of all time!!!!!
Maybe best video from Blake yet. Beautiful.
So awesome! Big challenge and you rose to the occasion. Nothing more satisfying than making things with your own hands! Maybe someday when you're a famous frame builder you'll look back on this with fondness!
I am not sure which is more amazing: 1) The fact that Blake BUILT a MTB or, 2) The fact that it took him only a week, whereas I have been waiting 8+months for a manufacturer to send my new bike. P.s. I can't wait to see that beast you crafted in action.
Impressive! Actually would have loved to see the components going on! Nevertheless that was an awesome video! Cheers
Love his enthusiasm in the builds! I feel like I'm watching Colin Furze 😂
Love Blake’s builds!!! Please can we have more or a spin of show Blake! You are the man keep it up and love GMBN
Kudos. That's pretty next level. Remember having a 753 road frame custom built back in the day by a local pro frame builder. Still the best bike I've ever ridden.
I am pretty impressed with this build. I used to modify my kids bikes to have disc brakes (aluminium frames) with a butane torch and some aluminium filler rod.
Brakes, not being a critical component, can be overlooked if they fail suddenly, so no worries with this modification. Also, if there were to be some sort of accident, kids can be replaced with little effort, at least for the dad.
"It is disgusting, but it works". Blake, you are awesome!!!!
It's awesome! Can't wait for the next test ride video!
Brilliant 👏 👏 👏 so cool to get back to basics. Best school of appreciation there is. Well-done
Best GMBN video yet Blake! Cant wait to see you ride it. If you ever want a hand welding a crazy contraption.....
Bhasikoro is a great brandname for a Blakebike!!!
The nuts as cable guides is brilliant, and less plastic, too.
This video is the coolest thing on the internet, I would rather see these types of videos than a go pro going down a trail for 45 min lol. Seriously Blake, such an amazing thing you did here! congrats and a BIG CHEERS!!!
Ahhh Blake i was waiting for this video since i noticed that you're building a hardtail, nothing can bring a big smile on my face like hardtail builds
Steel is real, Blake! Fantastic job!!
Awesome, Loving that back wheel line lol. Really enjoyed this one. More of this type of stuff please!
wow! at first i was thinking "no way!". Blake is such a great dude!
That’s awesome work! Your skills know no limits!
Wow! Amazing job Blake! That’s Impressive!!
It's such a good feeling building your own frame! I've done it with a trike and it's awesome!
A proper pipe cutter is a must for cutting handle bars, steerer tubes, etc. Square cut every time.
Good job Blake, I'd love to do this someday
So, so interested to watch this, fantastic job Blake, bike looks great, can't wait to see how it rides 🤟
Keep the Blake builds coming
Great work Blake, wishing you many happy years with that deadly bike.
first to the hardtail gang
This is quite impressive. Good stuff, Blake!
As a welder/fabricator and a dh racer who loves hardtails, (also very cheap with money and products), I have always wanted to make my own mild steel hardtail for DH! I think I will start the build next summer and prep it to attempt racing with it for the following year
Fair plays Blake, a lot of thought went into that and its turned out fantastic!
Looks so good, love your excitement when doing these projects!
That is very imoressive Blake! Nothing beats the satisfaction of building something of your own! Amazing job!
so amazing! im working up to doing this myself. its the very reason i got a mig welder. this may have been the inspiration i needed!
Excellent project. Mr Blake is inspiring.
Awesome video. Love your videography style. Nice visuals and crisp audio. Let alone your mechanical skills 👌
Blake's content producing is getting insane. Been following since his first solo film/edit. Every vid he drops is a banger, well done man.
That's really cool. Awesome job Blake.
Can’t express, in words how much I love a “Blake builds” notification!!!
Get on my bru, that’s un-b-fliping-leavable !!!
Amazing
Great job, Blake!! Cool build there!
Excited to see how it goes on the trails
Seriously impressive Blake, great work. Love the Blake Builds videos
Awesome job Blake a homemade jig would’ve helped a lot to get the angle spot on. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
Did want to see the build dude! you put so much effort into it, upload that man!
Looks so sick, great job blake!
I knew there was something traditional in you Blake. Famba shamwari. 💪🏽👊🏽
Wow wicked i just love the Blake build's vids and i can't wait to see him test it out.
