I think the funkiness of some of the visuals would be mitigated if the color saturation wasn't at 120%.

Yeh, everything is VERY yellow.
You can actually turn off the saturation in the HL2MMOD options and it looks MUCH better. If you turn off saturation, film grain, and vignette, you pretty much return to the same visual presentation as the original HL2. Kind of sad they're not disabled by default and labelled as crucial to gunplay to further discourage people from playing around.
It pays to experiment with options and mods to see what's visually right for you.
The colors look normal to me, am I crazy? or is it just my monitor....

I think what a lot of these "better lighting" mods for Half Life 2 dont understand is that were not in New Mexico anymore, the reason Black Mesa's lighting worked was because it fit the environments outside of the underground levels.
It's an MMOD thing. It's completely optional. You can turn it off. MMOD even has desaturation if you truly hate saturation.
What I don't like about this pack is how overly saturated a lot of colors are. The train station interior for instance is like 90% yellow. I don't think that Half-Life 2 has to be a "dark and gritty" game or anything, but it's just too much. Reminds me of those filters you can apply in Gmod where they just crank up the saturation of everything to get a "cartoony" look. I think the original works much better in that regard, because most of the time, the weather in (Eastern) Europe is pretty cloudy. Not super bright and warm.
Also, G-Man's new model looks so weird because it isn't being lit correctly. All the shadows, the few there are, seem more painted on than being cast by actual model geometry. It looks like those makeup artists that turn themselves into Geralt or Jack Sparrow. It looks like him, just not realistic.
Also, that Alyx model. Come on. Why does every modder seem to want to remove more and more of her clothes? Her jacket isn't even fixed with duct tape anymore! Why?
Find it stupid, that G-Man is from HLA, but not the Alyx herself, like whut?

Yeah, the lighting is definetly Way to bright, I am guessing that is from several mods adding slight saturation boost (I know MMod does) and when they are all paired together it causes it to be too bright.
About Alyx: what I like about Half-Life 2's Alyx is they managed to make her likeable/attractive while still making her look like a normal human being. I think because all the characters look human (because they are based off real people) is one of the reasons Half-Life 2 still looks good in most ways.
Well knowing that his friend made it I'm pretty sure he used the worst mods possible on purpose. I mean they're not that bad but you know what I mean.
i think the half life alyx models will always look good no matter what but it clashes so weirdly with Half life 2 assets, i can't put my finger on it

@Zoomer Stasi hla is extremely cartoony compared to hl2, it almost looks like a kid friendly animation at times
It looks weird because you still have the 2004 flat level geometry surrounding everything else. Everything is still made of squares, rectangles and octagons, so the high poly models stand out way too much.

Btw we run a server in Aus, there's Socal in west coast US, and Europe a few good ones.
It feels weird that some textures that are *flat* and are supposed to look *flat* are replaced by textures that are *flat* and are supposed to look *3d*

The intro seriously surprised me. I had NO idea HL2DM was still popular. That game was criminally underrated.
I assumed no one played it so I mapped in css always wanting more of a death match vibe in my maps I should try some halo inspired levels

The HDR bug is a bug from old builds of HL2 that HL2: Update still has. Update is kinde useless in 2023 because Valve upgrade and update mod is almost similar.
I see this line repeated a lot and it's not quite true. You can very easily make Update run in the latest HL2 build with minor tweaks to get the best of both worlds (I'm sure there's a guide on PC Gaming Wiki). Update still has a lot of features over OG like the updated lighting and level geometry afaik. Calling it "useless" is sorta direspectful towards Victor's works.

When showing the transition of the apartment hallway, when it was modded I genuinely couldn't tell what scene it was supposed to be, then when it switched over to the stock hl2 I was amazed at how different it really was. I'm totally gonna have to try these out I think

I have been using those sweet ultra-hi-polygon weapons models and and ADS mod just for fun. Just completed Minvera with them and it was insane - felt like a modern game!

How is sharing a mod pack made of FREE mods "not ethical"? Mods are ment to be shared, you dont need permission lmao
this is definitely a massive change to art style tbh. eg the apartment wallpaper all of those things have massive subconscious (and often conscious) effect on mood.

I like it. Buuuuuuuut….
There’s a habbit of modders to make things “too beautiful” with the lighting and it’s starting to bleed over into regular developers too with ‘HL;A’ and ‘CS2’. A game’s art style can help with narrative and graphic enhancements. Take a couple of old games in a series like ‘Wipeout 2097’ and ‘Wipeout3’. They don’t look like they were from the same series or console. The secret is greyed out colours, something which ‘Half Life 2’ did itself.
To make everything mesh together it’s a good idea to have some partial desaturation. Even if a model is colourful or way out of the games art style it can still look like it’s part of the world. The in-game reason for everything looking dull in HL2 was the Combine were pumping some kind of chemical (maybe a byproduct) into the air blocking out the sun. In the same way ‘Silent Hill’ ash covered a load of performance enhancing shortcuts, HL2’s grey look helped make the game age relatively gracefully.
The other annoying thing are weapon reloads. A Russian modder mentioned most other Russians tend to make overly aggressive reloading animations which you even seen in original games like Atomic Heart’. From what I remember he said guns are meant to fight with not against hahaa!
The aggressive reloadings is just a sign that Gordon is starting to lose his shit 😅

Half-Life 2 is a masterclass in lighting, I would argue that the temperature of every light placed was carefully considered, where this all looks blown out. I'm more of the opinion you should reduce the resolution to give outdated graphics some grace instead of trying to drag it forward with replacing assets. The older games were designed to be viewed through a fuzzy lens, the more you replace the more the parts left behind glare out and it begins to get to the point where you just start from scratch (like I think Black Mesa looks absolutely gorgeous and is a 500% improvement on the original). The game was never designed with 4K in mind, it was meant to be playable at 1024x768 with anti-aliasing off.
i understand where youre coming from with counter strike 2 even if i like it but i think youre way off the mark on half life alyx's lighting, though it is dramatic and more stylised than hl2 i still think it looks very grounded and not "overly beautiful" like the modpack here.

Pretty sure that's just the beta, where all the good lore comes from before it was cut.

Honestly I used to be big on HQ, HD and super poly mods [well maybe not that high poly] and would get so many that honestly my old harddrive might've been filled to the brim too quickly. Eventually I died down my obsession and actually became cool with using less mods so I just mainly use a few animation packs or retextures that look neat. Still, I don't underestimate or dislike mods that have HQ HD aesthetics.
Did you by any chance played this mod pack on every map, cause it crashes on nova prospect shortly after the Entanglement chapter? Like pls, is there anything extra that you did so it doesnt crashes?

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer to play retail HL and HL 2. Mods are not bad to spice up things from time to time though.
Yeah it's dependent on what the player likes. Some like it stock, some like it like its in the video, and some replace the NPCs with Freddy Fazbear and anime catgirls.

It is now apparent to me that DooM levels of modding are possible in Half Life, this pleases me greatly.
I'm not quite sure if this has been answered but would this modpack also work in VR mod?
Here are my few issues with this modpack after I installed everything.
Ammunition worldmodels are missing textures, and Skyclad forgot about Metrocops and Barney.
There are also some cases of wall textures being zoomed in instead of properly displaying at higher resolution, most noticeable with enhanced vanilla textures in the apartments.

I'm gonna be in the minority here probably, but to me the original looks miles better than these mods. They are way too flashy and mash everything together hoping the end result will be worth it, but it's not.
This is my opinion of course. I'm glad to see that a game this old is still being modded, but to me the original work will always remain timeless and the only way to play the game.
Going a step further, I would encourage people to download the original built from Nov. 2004. Even with it's issues, it's the best way to replay HL2 today.

this what i don't get , half life 2 is one of the few games that don't have massive modpacks like minecraft or terraria despite the fact it has an active modding community . let hope this open the door for more modpacks like this . or when we get the new half life 2 updates that add workshop .

To me the best way to play it, is with MMOD and CM13, however with removing the sexual graffiti. It will take huge space, and walking on the rubble gets really annoying, but i do like some stuff they made with CM13.

I have a few hangups with this pack but all the changes feel like they where made in good faith. I will stand by my opinion however that unmodded HL2:U is still the best way to experience the game for the first time.
Does anyone know how big the size of the memory will be with all the mods?
I played HL2 for the first time last year with MMod and Update. I had to turn off the bloom when I got to the rocket launcher sequences because I couldn't see what I was doing.

If you want to turn down the saturation it's very easy with ReShade.
If it's just the bloom that's bothering you, a console command like this will fix it:
*mat_bloom_scalefactor_scalar .5*

There are some people that play with their color settings set to NEON and their light settings set to BLINDING.
If you throw Cinematic Mod on top of it a d adjust some stuff, that would be straight up a full remaster.
I can't wait to see how the Half-Life 2: RTX team enhances the Coastal levels, because they aged badly due to being super empty at times.

One thing that might help with the overly bright and saturated maps would be to set mat_hdr_tonemapscale to something less than 1.0 in the console. Be aware that this is (somehow) considered a cheat, so you may need to set sv_cheats to 1 to get it working.
the fact tonemap is a cheat is super weird, wonder what happened back in the day for that to happen, unless it was an accident
MetroCop remake was a must in this, I've been adding stuff to my modded HL2 and so far I've crossed about 250+ mods and now the game crashes when there's too much action on the screen because of engine limitations.

this could be a memory overload. try to increase your heapsize depending on your ram and turn off more blood decals

Respectfully, I don't see enough of a difference, other than that things look brighter. In some specific cases it is even _too bright,_ such as the excessive bloom in places *** and also the fact that the apartments are too colorful, I actually like how the apartments look in a vacuum, they are quite lovely, but I think it deviates from what the aesthetic was meant to be: City 17 is beautiful but also depressing, these people have been miserable for the past 20 years, they have been intentionally kept miserable by the Combine for all that time, so the apartments in this build end up looking to lively and colorful, it's uh, not _dark and gritty_ enough hahaha.
I like running a modded build too, I'm currently using:
-MMod
-Nemez's Combine models (I initially got it because I grew to dislike the vanilla shotgunner model, and wanted something that felt different, but I ended up liking the whole pack)
-some Antlion skins that make their limbs a bit glowy like in Half-life Alyx (I loved that change)
-glowy blue eyes for the Metrocops
-a futuristic MP7 reskin that looks like it was fabricated by the combine
-a cool brown USP reskin
-a better "AR3"/AR2 lmg for mmod
-that futuristic shotgun used by the Chargers in Half-life Alyx, with a script that makes it automatic, just because I wanted to use some guns that felt different
-I also got a Combine sniper rifle which I use to replace the crossbow sometimes, and then I re-stat it in the skill.cfg file so that it has a higher ammo cap but it's not a one-shot kill so that it feels like a neat little side-grade
*** side rant: god I hate bloom, even in vanilla HL2, I love HL2 but it was made in a time when every mainstream dev seemingly had this messed up idea that the sky fucking glows when you look out the window.
