I'll give him this: He set out to turn Half-Life 2 into a Michael Bay movie and he succeeded. Even the otherwise inexplicable use of Christopher Nolan Batman soundtracks (as temp tracks and reference for his composer, in Michael Bay's case) is accurate to the premise.

In terms for the foliage, valve took inspiration from Portland and if you don't care about the foliage nature gets everywhere. Also i cant wait to see when Half-life 2 Fake Factory Remaster comes out!

the mod changed host_timescale to .85 which made the game slightly slower than originally, i guess this was done to make the pacing more "cinematic". so i think that explains why the shotgun took longer to reload than it originally did.

Cinematic Mod is gigabased in the sense that a single person put A LOT of effort into making his favorite game look the way he personally wanted it to look. I really don't understand all the hate. It's a free mod, don't play it if you don't like it. I never played it because, well, I'm not sure HL2 should look like THAT. But I salute the author, he really put a lot of work into this massive overhaul mod. And I mean, there ARE fans of this work, so it's not like it's completely bad or anything.

The whole point of cinema is immersion; ideally actors portraying a dystopian hell scape would be wearing makeup and clothing to reflect that?

I think the combine are the main spotlight for me on this mod, metrocops do have a questionable amount of tactical gear but the soldiers? I love em in my opinion, yes the elites and shotgunners looking essentially identical is really dumb but them being mostly black makes them more challenging and fun for me.
The gun having a laser pointer is removed in the later patches of the mod as well as a few other things getting fixed and you never actually get to see a fully modeled Alex in the game.

The issue with Highway 17's skybox is probably because FakeFactory had a weird hangup about how quickly time passes in the game, and tried to "fix" it by making most of day 2 take place at night. (This would also explain why the sun sets more slowly on day 1.) But for whatever reason he decided to make this, too, something that players could toggle off if they wanted. And short of shipping a whole second set of maps, the only way to kinda-sorta achieve that was to rely on dynamic elements like tonemapping and env_sun entities. The result is a set of maps that look wrong no matter which version you go with. At "night", the shadows are too stark to pass for moonlight, and during the "day" you have a blindingly bright sun shining through a sky of pure haze.

Earlier versions of the mod went way overboard with tons of bridges in the canals and coast levels, and then scaffolding, tons of scaffolding everywhere.
MMOD supports Cinematic mod, so you could have the levels with the MMOD gameplay.
I know of this mod because of a friend, he told me it "improved the graphics" so I borrowed a DVD with I think is V9 (I still have a copy of that, somewhere) it's an older version so I'm not sure if it comes with the infamous fully modeled Alyx, thing is... the setup shows previews of the Alyx models so you know what you're getting into, but I played it with the default because I'm not a degenerate and it was pretty good. This was some years ago and the graphics will probably look like crap compared to modern games, but I enjoyed it.
I always thought Cinematic Mod was very impressive and good looking, *especially* when you think about the fact it's made by ONE guy! 😮

On gamebanana a guy named -ZMA- is doing a Fake Factory - Remaster and it is looking awesome he is fixing the mod. Just look for Fake Factory Remaster cause he is adding Beta part of ravenhome, and lost coast too. Heck yeah I am playing the remaster version of cinematic half life 2.
this mod holds a weird place in my heart in the sense of i both loved parts of it and hated it.
the models are a kind of give and take where I didnt notice too much at the time because i was screwing around with model replacements at the time on my own and i think i replaced them with renamon or lucario or someting within that vein. (yes I was furry trash then and now lol)
But I did the modifications of the environment when it didnt horribly clash or cause bugs (yes looking at you stub toe geomtry issues).
The soundtrack at the time I tried it was a hanzimmer thing which both worked and didnt depending on the situation and also due to sound design and the issue where it could almost completely drown out voices.
I at the time think i also used this mod as a kind of benchmark tool because of its agressive use of extra geometry in some areas that could lag.
But overall if you ignore the weird weapons and uh overly sexaulized models (which honestly seem more like a product of the time) and the other akward model replacements. The geometry added to the maps in some cases atleast for me added to the expirence.
I will also admit that i had some level of hype fomo because the mod regularly took multiple days to download on my connection at the time (yes i had to redownload it multiple times because i would delete it to save space).
I would argue that since the mod was explicitly going for a "Hollywood blockbuster michael bay-esque" feel. That all the models looking like "supermodels" would go in line with that, playing off of a lot of big hollywood movies at the time employing similar tropes.
As for the "fully modeled" thing, I think it should be noted that fake factory most likely just took some generic pornographic model off of the internet to use as a base mesh and just either forgot, or didn't care enough to remove the genitals. It's usually pretty common with similar head hack type work in 3d modeling.
for the most part, most def Michael Bay. I mean the chaos in his Transformers films match as much here if you know what I mean XD (pss just wanna mention that one Age of Extinction scene lelel)
Despite everything, you gotta give credit to the maps actually looking good. You can argue the art direction of the "motive" which is fair, it's supposed to be Half life 2, but after playing some horrendous looking Left 4 Dead 2 maps, the effort gone on these CM maps is actually quite astounding.
Saying is just a bunch of things slapped together is just saying it in bad faith for the sake of saying it. I've seen actual maps that are actually assets slapped together with no cohesion and look terrible. So in a way, the mod creator is an amazing mapper, just needs an actual art direction.
Continuing the previous, while I assume the creator took with the idea of a forest region of the easter europe, HL2 is certainly more descriptive with the world and setting chosen, which was a coastal region with the fauna and flora being drained, representing a dying earth by the hands of the combine (Not entirely drained of life, as seen as Episode 2).
At any rate, on my opinion, while many choices can be questioned due the nature of the world of Half life (I think the super model-like characters seem a bit more like The Matrix than Half Life), the art pass on maps is really good. Surely with a proper team and proper direction, this could've been an entirely original mod that would've been seen as pushing Source to the absolute limit.
Unfortunately this will be the mod remembered for the fully modeled Alyx with explicitly placed toys in her room (Super Mario RPG actually got away with that thinking about it...)

I'm pretty sure cinematic mod is using a modified host_timescale to make everything slightly slower, that maybe why the shotgun is slow but I don't know if it's changeable in the settings, the settings being something like the "character pimper" ui.

surprizingly unbiased review. I like cinematic mod and had very few problems with its maps. I didn't notice "kinky" graffiti and "toys" until I watched reviews lol. the author put a lot of effort into the mod for sure, and I can appreciate that. I am not concerned about 100% lore accuracy. usually I don't use custom models, music and weapons, sticking to maps only. yeah, character models are too much. it could get away with changes to faces only, but cherries poking through shirts are too much. still, citizen models look ridiculously cool, and I kinda like them. Grigoriy look silly cool as well.
When a mod gets so wild that you need a mod for a mod, you know you entered mod-ception.

I followed the Cinimatic Mod progress throughout the years and it always was impressive the amount of work Fakefactory put in. The mod was hilariously massive for it's time. I honestly enjoyed seeing his perspective of the universe and never really used any of the enhanced models, I loved the overhauled levels and atmosphere. It's a mod, the og game is still there and playable so it's not some sin to enjoy another take on something we love. I love that you really dive into the positives of the mod :)
And I'd love to see you do a video on The Specialists mod ;) I'll never let it down man. It's so good.
most of that work is lifting assets and uncompressed textures from other people's projects
12 years ago, when I finished school and had some time to rest before Uni, my dad asked me to download and install CM to play (he's a great HL2 fan to the point of playing almost any mod that's being released, mapjams included). Rad actually raised almost every concern my dad had with the mod, especially about the gunplay.
He also played Build 2046 (that's how I first found out about it) and then DSN (about which he was quite disappointed lmao).

i played this mod way back when it... was still publically available. it was ok. no need to talk about the graffity and the... extra room in black mesa east.
i genuinely felt that the boat controlled WAY worse in this mod. i cannot tell you why or if that is even true. the extra stuff was also cool - but still a little much and even distracting at times.
all the possible controversies and odds left out - probably a good mod - just not for me (and many others it seems)

my opinion about the "clutter" has changed over the years. i had your opinion about it not fitting for a while - but it changed to something more accepting. the fern esp. makes it so vibrant and pleasing (on a visual standpoint)
and YES the graphics are insane! if they made the graphics from the ground up, i think this is insanely good looking. on its own esp.

I see the issue; you had the "oiled up vortigaunts* option enabled. This automatically decreases your fps to 15 so you can stare at them longer. This is a major feature of the mod.
