    I will always think of my dad watching this movie. I was born in 1986 and this was one of the first VHS tapes I watched at home back when I was a child and because of my dad. 35 years later and we still talk about this movie or rewatch it together if it's on TV.
    Spielberg sure knew how to make kids of our generation dream.
    And yeah, after so many years I still cry when those bikes start flying.

      @pamelasoto6903 Před 2 lety +2

      I could not relate more with the emotions. My dad bought this movie on VHS after I was born in 1992. Then eventually DVD. He watched it in the cinemas then when I was young enough we watched this movie and it'd be one of my favourite nostalgias. Even now rewatching this scene I teared up from the moment those bikes went up too. Since then we've rewatched the movie or whenever it feels like one of those Friday or Saturday nights. The build-up of this whole scene has the classic and timeless Spielberg charm. Mostly a huge of fan of Spielberg's movies. Even Back to the Future (even though he was executive producer).

    As iconic as the shot of Elliot flying across the moon is, my favorite shot in the movie has always been the bicycles flying towards the setting sun. Seeing the sun moving downwards with the music swelling at the incredible sight really accentuates that the earth is a planet orbiting our beautiful star, the sun, and a grand cosmic ballet is playing out in the background even as an exciting drama is in the foreground. I also like to think of it as the sun giving one last farewell to ET as his visit to earth ends.

    Why Spielberg is a great director: It takes Elliot a good moment to process everything that is happening and respond to it. When he finally yells out after looking over at the moon, the awe and delight has built up in his soul to a tipping point--all right there in Henry Thomas's performance. Your average director today would have the kid shouting and yammering right away as the screen flooded with hyperbolic CGI nonsense. Spielberg's mastery of emotional realism (and the time and sensitivity it takes to get there), as much as his fluid camera and John Williams's score, make this scene "real."

But ET had other ideas.This film was only a filler for Spielberg as he had put it on the long finger for a good while.So he had time on his hands n said he would make it. The music makes the movie into what it is a masterpiece..Spielberg said if close encounters hadnt been made then ET would never have been made.

    This score was certainly inspired by another great one, "Sea Hawk", by the legendary Erich Korngold, of whom Williams is a disciple!

    Seen it in the theaters as a kid, still love this movie. Need to watch it again its been years.
    Good to see the original scene with the rifles instead the walkie talkies (the lame version i have on DVD),
