Quick commentary video on how Super Sentai (戦隊) has been able to handle its anniversary problem from a few years ago. In the video, we highlight how Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, Kakai Sentai Zenkaiger, Bakuage Sentai BoonBoomger, and Ohsama Sentai King Ohger, handle this concept, with characters like Zenkai Black, and King Kyoryu Red.
This is my channel where I review Tokusatsu, including Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and Power Rangers.

The reason why Toei was so awful about their anniversary content was because a LOT of it kept being handled by the same guy: Producer Shinichiro Shirakura. He doens't care about legacy, he has throughout his career sought to tear such down. The super hero taisen movie series was all him, as was Zenkaiger, as was Zi-O, as was DECADE. He doesn't care about character and story, he cares about shilling a product no matter how much it denigrates something done before; always has been. It's only when such productions were out of his hands that they had a chance to be good, but often since Gokaiger the problem has been the running series itself has not been good, the premisce for the crossover is not good or redundant (intentionally or no) to something already done, or the crossover itself mishandles half of the cast invovled to demean them or contradict their tale. these are easy things to avoid, but Toei kept tripping over itself because of their staff rotations, lacking awareness of how their products are received until far in retrospect, failure to hold the usual problem suspects accountable, and the fact that more than half of the sentai series after Gokaiger as just plain bad so audiences are not engaged with seeing them interact with characters they MIGHT like...or as happened over several years, two casts people hate coming together is not something people want to engage with. I like Kyoryuger, but I hated the Toqger Crossover as the writer demeaned the kyoryuger and showed them incompetent to promote the Toqger who by comparison WERE incompetetent (And this is regardless of the 'them actually being children' thing). the worst parts of Ryusoulger versus Lupat all came from the Patranger side of the plot, continuing on from Lupat where the Patranger were the worst and trying to promote them as better would always be demeaning towards better characters which broke their story. Kyuranger literally killed the space Squad Crossovers at the time as confirmed by naruhisa arakawa because no-one liked Kyuranger, and it's only now thanks to King-ohger being the best Sentai in years that they're getting another go at it; as Space Squad since it was first envisioned with Gokaiger Versus gavan had the greatest chance of seeing running success due to the sorts of casts it could bring back in and the sustainable story engine it could employ. It's a matter of bad producers and bad writers exploiting something they had no measure of understanding of how to do well; the same reason why every power rangers crossover done since 2011 has been garbage. Always has been.
Actually makes me sad that no one liked Kyuranger. I always really liked it.

The neo saban anniversaries were really the only bad ones. Every anniversary/reunion they did prior and after was fine.
The reason why the Avatar changes were done away with was because Inoue decided that he'd rather highlight the team's own skills rather than prioritize selling merch by advertising the changes. That was a smart move imo.
Eh, it would've been cooler to see which avatar changes each character picks for themselves and which they gravitate to. I could see Tsubasa always going for the ninja-themed sentai and Shinichi for the martial arts themed sentai. No idea on Haruka or Tsuyoshi, they didn't seem to have a very developed fighting style. Maybe cops/tech for Tsuyoshi and vehicles/dinosaurs for Haruka. Honestly, Haruka is difficult because she just clubs guys and tries to stay alive.

I wouldn't mind a Super Sentai season with a theme based on yokai or "Ancient Egypt". Cue Imperial March.

I think Sentai compare to other tokus (especially it's sister series) finally did a good compromise of having anniversary aspect with out sacrificing show's individual identity and that's ironicly what PR usually did. And it's to simple have a special episode or two-parter with guest character, that's meant to be a one off, instead something that needed to be integral part of the show.

Even Zenkaiser’s design is referential. His suit is based on both Akaranger from _Goranger_ and Big One from _JAKQ._
I don't get why people say Zenkaiser is based on Big One.... no he's not!!! The Color Scheme is based on the original Concept of Varidreen! A Gorenger Mecha!

Haven't they been doing this like, forever ago, even before Gokaiger? Maybe they're only relegated to special release films, but they did already existed before.
one thing they should be is like suit upgrade with technology advancing so do their suits. Good example is with Kamen Rider Ichgo in 2016 they brought him back for a movie. You can tell it was Kamen Rider Ichigo but a more high tech version.
I love when the resign ichigo. Like in shin or KR the first. I wish Gorenger got new suits lol.
Are they really cherry picking seasons to spotlight? I just assumed it's series that are celebrating their anniversaries that are being picked. The "faceless" ranger cameos are definitely gonna be back at least for the big anniversary seasons, just think Sentai has found a way to to continue this legacy train in non-anniversary seasons by putting in seasons with anniversaries in them, which in turn, promotes their respective anniversary movies - if that makes sense. Still pretty exciting, just hope we get creative ways of incorporating them like KingOhger!
The only problem I have with recent anniversary Sentai specials/movies like the 20th or 10th, there's now more frequent red rangers that look like a power-up but are treated as separate rangers. It's already happened with Kyoryuger, Hurricaneger, and Dekaranger, and I hope it doesn't keep happening because I don't think we need more rangers on a pre-established team for an anniversary special/movie.
I agree with this take to a degree. Those kinds of specials happen because those shows fully earned and deserved their right to have one. Look at Dekaranger for instance. They were so successful in their own show that they got to lead the charge in the Space Squad movies and then have their anniversary movie and side movies because they were and still are that good and the fans, young and old LOVE them. Those power-ups happen because if we get the same thing that we got it makes it feel less special. It's an acquired taste of course but I love the concept of 10 years later you get an even cooler power-up to what they have before because that storyline has evolved to the nth degree.

Holy crap you summed up my complaints perfectly! It does really feel like for an “anniversary” ability to turn into past rangers they used that so much. I have been super happy for the past season and current season, they’ve had some great stories and are just super enjoyable overall!
If you only had to pick one ranger from your top five favorite teams and put them in a team together, who would you pick?
Man I wished there was a 10th anniversary for Shinkenger but the actor for Takeru became famous and couldn't get him back

I think another issue is that anniversary content can be daunting if you haven't watched the og source material so making it a crossover with one series is more interesting and if someone wants to watch/learn about the og first it's easier than something like Decade or Zi-O. (Even if it's not "necessary" to watch the og, I know I and other people I know feel 'scared' in a sense to watch crossover material with little to no knowledge of the source)
Thats totally understandable. I think that's why I like seeing crossover episodes / specials over an entire anniversary show.

I am personally a man of spectacle and it doesn't matter to me weather its a single team or a bunch of old suits in a quarry, I enjoy it either way.
It’s not again and again! It happen because it is the anniversary! Either it is Sentai itself or other teams within Sentai franchise! People just likes to mix up all tokusatsu shows and say they are doing too much anniversary! When it’s not true, cause Sentai actually celebrate indviduals teams! Unlike Power rangers that only celebrate Mighty Morphin, Power rangers doesn’t have any anniversary were Mighty Morphin is not Involved
i agree in a way. i feel the only one that warrants the again and again problem is Donbrothers, but Inoue put in or was made to put in the “anniversary” elements for what i can only assume is familiarity for those turned off by Donbro’s everything, he clearly didn’t give a shit otherwise lmao
for stuff like Zenkaiger i feel its necessary to have “big nameless shots” because damn, seeing the entire legacy in such a grand way does feel good, great even

Only tangentially related to the video but honestly, people have dumped on the BoonBoomger suits but personally I've loved them since the reveal, Boon Orange and Boon Violet have two of my favourite suit designs of all time and the whole team probably have my favourite designs of all vehicle themed sentai, like, as much as I love them, the King Ohger suits were miles more basic, the BoonBoomger suits have such original designs despite being the next season along from King Ohger, its another reason why I love the Donbrothers so much
My issue with the boonboom suits is that I already didn’t like the helmets, but I also feel like the helmets are mismatched to the suits. I feel like the racing suits could be made to work better, but they could have matched the helmets to the suits better, too. I had a similar gripe with the go-busters suits being made of leather, tbh, except that was my only nitpick with that. I had a nitpick with kyuranger’s blue suit for much the same reason, even though I like it. Any time they do something that isn’t spandex it just comes out weird in my eyes.
And so that it doesn’t go unanswered I also really don’t like the goseiger suits, because it feels like they belong in the 80s. Something about the helmets was really jarring to me when I first saw them.
My biggest hope when we get to the Reiwa 10 winter movie in a few years, is that they bring back ALL the lead actors from Zero-One onward. Big ask, I know. But I think it's definitely in the realm of possibility with the actors from Reiwa seasons. Imagine the team henshin, man.

I always thought that one of the reasons Kaito was added in Donbros was because he was technically "alone" during his Zenkaiger days. Now he has a cast of main characters beside him who weren't wearing full suits.

Ironically I feel Gotchard and Legend's crossover got it... 75% right. Like, disrepaired suits and Dark Kiva Wake Up 3 aside, they take time and effort to not just give Gotchard himself time in the spotlight, but even spend a couple of episodes first where Legend barely shows up until the second ep's end. Even then, they seemed to dedicate effort to not just keep Gotchard in, but keep him relevant by not just having him use legend power ups, but have Legend use HIS powers. Showing creativity, and actually using it to advance the plot. One could even argue they did the Liminal Suit thing, but with the Ark One Malgam instead of Legend himself doing it.

the entirety of post Tsuburaya bankruptcy Ultra series had this problem, after Bandai became majority shareholder it has been spamming the legend gimmicks and legend ultra cameos non-stop
so much so that Blazar was a breath of fresh air and it's first episode had insane viewership solely because it has nothing to do with anything before him, storyline wise, except for the toys, which still has it, but is not part of the canon/not shown on the show at all
Bandai was so forced to use that concept so Ultraman can surpass and outshine Gokaiger even Decade, which is why Ginga-Decker are the New Generation GokaiDecade not Ultras. They are Gokaiger and Decade’s grandsons lol (except Grigio)
Blazar was indeed a fresh start and Arc continues but sadly Bandai still limiting tsuburaya from making new kaiju and it’s confirmed that Arc would probably have less new kaiju.

and thus Arc is slated to have many gimmicks and forms, and as such the Monsters takes the hit, it'll be mostly recycled/returning monsters by the looks of it

Didn’t Bandai recently swap their priorities with ultraman and super sentai because of the toy sales? They got to do something to change in the reiwa era since unlike kamen rider, they can’t afford to be stagnant. Over saturation isn’t a problem. It’s all comes down to whether if it’s just a bunch of empty soulless sentai hero suits line up without the proper actor voicing it.
There are different movies that deal with different scale and scope of sentai related things from super hero taisen to space squad to anniversary/return/vs crossover. The only sentai beside gokaiger that treat old sentai series with respect is probably just zyuohger when the gokaiger is featured in it. Most of the time, they don’t care about expanding the lore. The Kyoryuger
only receive such an amazing crossover with kingohger is because the Kyoryuger cast have a bunch of schedule conflict that didn’t allow it to be it’s own stand alone movie, so it got rework in to kingohger vs movie sidelining the donbrothers. Like in some recent past sentai like ninninger, it feature a lot of sentai cameo and guest appearances, but it didn’t properly paid tribute to the original series even with the actors back. It’s like the beast morpher crossover attempt to recreate its Japanese counterpart instead of something akin to forever red or once and always.
However, Now with premium bandai getting more hungrier and greedy As well as with the ttfc streaming service always needing new contents. As long as there’s enough older adult fanbase craving to see their beloved sentai season back and enough older sentai alumni willing to return to reprise their role, they will continue to make these return/vs crossover movies special happen. It’s not always a positive case especially with ninjawhite recently defending her 30th anniversary special against fans that complain about their age and looks. It’s also very hard to get a full team back as well as to be able to write a compelling story for their return is even harder. The recent go-on red appearance in the recent sentai was a bit lackluster despite it maintain its tone.
I want another Kung Fu sentai. Also Dairanger doesnt get as much love.

"legends" in newer gens of toku are just empty husks. They aren't legends but like those dead trophies in smash ultimate. The real ones are just distantly living their own lives unrelated until actually mentioned.
Btw. they absolutely trashed decade he was abused to a point, where they just had to kill him and then make a new spin off with legend. Ugh
