  • How to bleed Power Steering System the RIGHT WAY! Bleed Powersteering
    ► Our Website for Tools, Parts and more Videos: mechaniclifestyle.com
    In this video we are showing you how to bleed the power steering system on your vehicle. If you have replaced the power steering pump or a high pressure powersteering hose than you WILL HAVE TO bleed it or you are risking to damage your power steering pump.
    If you start the car without bleeding the power steering system it will foam the powersteering fluid and it may creat air pockets that will make your pump to run dry and it could damage it.
    If you hear a noise coming from the power steering pump after the repair than it means that there is still air in the system.
    You will have to lift the front end of the vehicle up in the air so you can freely turn the steering wheel and not have pressure on the lines( do not start the car) until you bleed all the air out.

    Much appreciated, had a loud pump, thought I needed to replace it. I had added power steering fluid a while back and knew nothing of bleeding the system. After seeing this, went out, turned the wheel a bunch, then started it (cap off) and did the same. Much more subtle and will monitor it as time goes by. Thanks for taking the time to help.

    This helps a lot man. I'm gonna do the new Rack & Pinion and pump in my 2000 Ford Windstar like this in just a few minutes.
    I had never heard of bleeding Power Steering like you do brakes with vacuum. The instructions called for a J 43485 adapter and they are a fairly expensive adapter that fits in place of the reservoir cap so you can put 20 in vacuum on the system to draw the air out like brake lines.
    I didn't want to buy the adapter. I've spent hundreds on this thing already. Thanks for this! 😀😀😀

    Thanks guys! My instructions that came with my new rack n pinion said I needed to run a suction pump, (with a non sealed connection, as far as I can tell), and I was thinking that doesn't make sense at all! #1, if your going to use a suction pump, you MUST seal off the inlet, the connection, so that it sucks from the farthest point, drawing down on the entire system. And #2, once you're done, how do you KEEP the system in a state of vacuum,, while you add fluid? They didn't explain this AT ALL, making it seem very improbable and inaccurate. I think you CAN use a suction pump in a good way, they just didn't explain it very well at ALL, but you don't NEED to, in a system that is designed to flow, I e. very probably push out any air bubbles by moving the system, first manually, then from the pump, then a full run through of operation, once you've don't the others enough. Thanks again! Btw, where'd you find that Head Turner, I mean Steering Wheel turner. I need to find ME one like that! 😄😋

    Vacuum pump is definitely needed on some cars and you MUST repeat the procedure several times people. Let it sit overnight if time for it with cap off so bubbles work themselves out of system. Repeat next day. ALWAYS check fluid level during the process.

If your truck is around the same year as mine or say make, go through the wheel well it’s the easiest way to get to the power steering pump, you also have to pull the air condenser out or the giant hose connected to it to get your pump out through the top of the engine compartment.

    always take time to remove and clean out the remote reservoir ( if equipped) before the system refilled & is restarted ...slime and debris will form on the screen inside to reservoir ( most have a careen or a fine mesh filter) and that junk will restrict full flow back to the pump, creating more hard to trace issues.

    • @armoricain
      @armoricain Před 7 lety +2

      Excellent point! I'm going to replace a high pressure hose on a 2001 PT Cruiser because it is soaked with fluid, even though I didn't detect a leak from it, and now that you pointed that out, I am wondering whether the problem is actually the screen being dirty; I will DEFINITELY check that screen out, and clean out the whole reservoir; I also bought a power steering filter; no leaks from the rack-and-pinion. Again, thanks for the reminder!

    • @WorldMechanics
      @WorldMechanics  Před 8 lety +16

      No problem at all, the vehicle needs to be on jack stands because it will be easier to turn the steering wheel without starting the car and being in the air there will be no resistance on the powersteering components. If it is a lighter vehicle you might be able to do it without being jacked up

    • @Imbored558
      @Imbored558 Před 6 lety

      The air in a closed system with pressure against it will act like a ball and bounce back and forth and/or compress. Giving it the least resistance possible, by jacking the vehicle up in front, allows the trapped air to be released more easily. It's not intuitive, but it works, on little cars as well as Kenworths.

      @jacobsenske Před 5 lety +1

      Fair point... Furthermore, if the car is in a state where it is permanently off, and it is necessary to utilize the wheel, or to put an automatic transmission into neutral, etc... There is another place for the key, usually located near the gear selector. This is know as the shiftlock.
      This may be useful in a situation where turning the key to auxiliary does not release the steering wheel.
