Excuse the camera quality here. It came out way worse in post editing. It bugs me too 😓
Really helpful though.
Seriously? I think I'll let that slide. In fact, I didn't even notice until I read this comment. You're good & a blessing to your audience. The info is what's important. 😉
Love your work, you are my design mentor. Thanks for learning alot from you
I think the video came out just perfect and so helpful, but that's just my opininion 5:38
It's quite filmic
Just wanted to say how thankful I am for the work, advice, resources that you put out here to all of us. Very inspiring stuff. So grateful for you.
Hey Satori, I'm a brazilian man that have learned so much about graphics design these last months and I'm also would like to say thanks for your tips, its have been helped a lot in the creative process and how to get the main subjects when I'm building a brand.
Thanks for the feedback Felipe, awesome news :)
That vehicle motion thing at the end with the music is such a super cool touch!
I watched some videos on graphic design portfolio, but yours gave me the clarity I really needed.
Very clear and concise video. Love it. Thank you so much 🌼
Thank you, thank you, thank you! As someone who did a masters in design at a great school, I was never taught how to actually promote myself after uni. It's one thing to be a sick designer, but its a whole other to have others believe it.
Keep these videos coming!
You're very welcome Grace :)
Indeed! Promoting yourself is a different beast completely in itself
I'm literally graduating with my bachelors in graphic design tomorrow! You are so right though! I'm a beast at Illustrator, and I can give you a good run for your money at photoshop. I'm *ok* at indesign ;) but I don't really know what makes an effective portfolio. I don't really know how to promote myself in a meaningful way. CZcams University here I come!
Thanks for the helpful tips on the importance of showing your best work but also your process and how you can solve problems. Can you please create videos on your process currently ?
Hi! I'm Rilwan. I can't begin to express how much your videos have greatly helped me understand the world of graphic designs.....can wait to be someday dishing out helpful tips like you for free too.
Thanks a billion man!
I found your channel today. And I'm so glad that I did. I needed to better understand what goes into a comms portfolio. Though your video speaks to graphic designing, your core principles and advice helped me shift my thinking. I now get that it's not about showing off. It's about speaking to the problems I'm solving. That makes it so much easier as I live to solve problems. Now I know how to present my ideas. Thank you, sir!
Welcome aboard and glad that you have changed your thinking a bit :)
Excellent tips, all very useful Satori, thank you very much and greetings from El Salvador 🇸🇻
Thanks for changing my mindset! I always viewed a portfolio only as a way to show off my work and skills. Love your tips!
Than you for the great info as always. I would like to see more examples of what makes a good vs bad portfolio. Maybe you could breakdown some real world portfolios in a future video. Your channel has been invaluable to my growth. Thanks again!
A lot of inspiration I got from this, can’t wait to start my portfolio. Thank you very much for this !
Same here, working on my portfolio too!
Thanks a lot for such amazing tips!
My main problem with most of my project-based clients are "utilizing the spaces" or "don't leave blank spaces" kind of mindset. No matter how I explain to them that "less is more", they just want their design to be crowded which is something I don't like. So I am forced to design something that is not really good BUT, unimaginably, great for their eyes. LOL.. I don't share them in my portfolio though.. My style for crowded design is to choose colors that has great contrast between the subject and the background or graphics that are less important.
Yeah, in the end we just accept the fact that the client is paying our bills either we like what was designed or not. Those kind of "messy" designs don't deserve a place on anyone portfolio.
thanks for sharing! Adding value by aesthetic design and problem solving efficiency as much as possible
Absolutely!
Thank you! I now have a different outlook on how my portfolio should be composed to attract the clients that I want.
Value indeed. Thanks for the resourceful content.
awesome tips, thanks!
Thanks a lot! This video totally flips my opinion on portfolio and gives a good starting point to rearrange mine. Cheers and all the best!
That's awesome 👌
Thank you! I was in an existencial dilemma as a graphic designer. I don't know how could i forget i am a problem solver... i was totally burnt out that i ignored the main reason i do this. I feel happy helping people with this little things i can do. Thank you again.
Happy to hear you're starting to make a turnaround, stay positive 👍
@@SatoriGraphics thanks Satori, keep your fantastic work.
‼Wonderful advice. Thank you very much.🙂
Hi Satori! Can you make a video about what students (like high schoolers/undergraduates) can do if they wish to get into graphic design? I really like your videos and I believe they might have reached more younger people than you expected!
My first tips I encourage my students to do:
- Find designs you like, save them, and try to copy them from start to finish as close as possible to the finished product. This will both test and improve your skills in your software of choice!
- Learn Gestalt theory and find examples of it in the real world/web
- Full up your workspace until there’s nothing left! (Negative space can come next after you understand back the dories/principles of design
-Study the top designers based on your taste

Amazing video, thank you!
My 1st time on the channel.... wow..... well explained! Just str8 to the point!
Thank you! Loved that curved screen effect at the end of the video though, unique.
Glad you liked it!
Great video with awesome and simple tips. Thank you
You're welcome :)
thanks it was really helpful
hey no worries :)
thank you so much for making such nice video for designer like me .
ive found that its easier to keep a few portfolios going - one where you can deep dive into a problem, one for a playground, and one for general corporate-projects - I have so much work but its variable on what you want your users to focus on
Thank you so much for your invaluable advice and guidance. I always look forward to your tutorials.
Is it possible for you to create a mock client briefs for us to undertake, to sharpen our design skills?
Pax to you Satori!
I have a logo design competition launching some time this time, so stay tuned for that. Thanks
@@SatoriGraphics Awesome! Can't wait....thank you so much.
Another idea has come to mind, I would love to learn and come to know how to brand oneself.
Love You, Boss. Very helpful for my Graphic Design journey.
Thanks and really happy to hear that

Thank you so much for sharing Sir Satori ^_^

So informative, thanks a lot!
My pleasure!
love this… thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it Jessi
i love to see your videos because your videos give us different knowledge which no one give us so i want to say you thanks♥️♥️
Great to hear that!
@@SatoriGraphics I pray that you give us information like that long time♥️♥️
Hey Satori, thank you for your fantastic videos! I have some questions. What do designers buy from freelancers or similar services? What is needed a lot (several things are possible, not only one) by designers and it is not fully available now? Could you make a video about these two questions?
Great tips as always. At the 5:38 point in the video OPININION should be opinion. Just thought you’d want to know because I would if it were my work :-)
Thanks for the advice
Any time
Very informative and on-point video
Glad you think so!
You are my favorite... you videos are so enjoyable & nice
Wow, thank you!
Very helpful video, any tips on how to avoid those long scrolling pages? Say for instances if you created many assets for one project and would like to give them space on your portfolio
Watched and thanks really hopeful
Good luck!

I’m a college student. I am about half way done with all my courses. It’s crazy to me all you learn is not really helping you build a portfolio I have maybe a couple assignments that were portfolio worthy. This summer I plan on working to build my portfolio maybe I can get good enough to freelance while I’m building up a portfolio that’s my goal. This video was helpful I’m going to spend each week during the summer doing my own stuff to build it up. I’ll say it again. I learn more from CZcams than college. Thanks for this awesome video.
Really great to hear that! I Learned most of my knowledge after having left formal education as well. All the best you 👍
Hi! I was wondering what font you use in 2:02 . I liked it and would like to use it in the future if you don't mind
Perfect.
Incredible content
I'll be working on my portfolio using this video for reference.
Love the song at the end. What was it called?
thanks :)
'Away To Nowhere' by No Xtra
Thank you 🖤💙🖤💙
Any time!
Brooo really?? Like this help me much more buddy… really love it 😍 😍😍
Great buddy
This is nice video about marketing for any freelance job.
Glad you liked it
I think that the "about page" should include things like interests and hobbies. But make it very brief. It lets customers/ companies get a sense of your personality.
fantastic💎
Cheers 👍
We'll keep growing and keep getting better, won't probably need portfolios when I ace this game.
I'm subscribed for a reason - great videos! 👍
Now that AI can be our 'partner' if chosen, creating a portfolio has become testing. The main reason is that AI-generated art, or _work_ , can now be more diverse than ever. The answer to the following might be an obvious 'pick your niche'. Double-edged sword to now direct a team as opposed to having hands-on experience. I haven't had my hands on the actual software eg. Illustrator, PS, After Effects, Audition, etc. for a while. I'm finding myself creating with the help of AI and discovering other things I can create, almost better than the ones I used to manage with the team. I was just directing it before. As AI is allowing us to diversify further, the target audience covers a _lot_ of demographics. So I'm branching out on my own, and looking at my work is like owning albums by Nine Inch Nails, Britney Spears, Avicii, Tupac and Updog, all at the same time!
How would you showcase a portfolio with a wide variety of work? This is the gist. It's been a year since you posted this, and I think your opinion about how to create a portfolio _now_ with the advent of AI versus a year ago would be interesting, insightful and very helpful. 👍

Thought I was dyslexic for a moment "Opininion" appeared on the screen. Your content is insane!
thank you
Welcome!
Satori, thank you so much for this video, I’m definitely gonna be reverting back to it as I start to build my first graphic design portfolio. Would you make a video on Tips of what to do when you don’t feel inspired, or creative. And what do you do when your downtime to pull that creativity out of you?
I really love it 💕. Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩
Cheers Bronze Guz
Amazing thanks! Another Bangladeshi designer here
one year later and I still use this advise
awesome to hear that :D
Just noticed the word “opinion” (5:41) is misspelled “opininion”. Nevertheless, another great content, sir. I really want to be trained by you.
Hi Satori! May I ask if the designer have the rights to use their clients' paid designs for their portfolio? or they do need to have a proper agreement before using designs to their portfolio? Thanks for your videos!
Hey.
It is always best to talk about this with your client before, and then add it into your contract.

"Less is more" is the most important advice when speaking with a Designer (imo). Of course, very important who your audience are. Personally, too often I see designers showing their skills with animations (a lot of animations) and it only manages to confuse our eyes. "Where do I go from here?".
I remember back when Flash was introduced. It was a big leap and people went completely overboard. Don't get me wrong, they made some amazing stuff but confused people when it came to navigation. Prioritise Navigation! Make it look good without overdoing it.
My man please tell me where you get your music from...your background music is on point
SoundStripe 👍
Anyone have some great examples of the best portfolios?
SATORI !!! I am trying to optimize my fb and linkedin account by creating a eye catching banner for my clients. Can you suggest me what to include in the banner, I meant from design to information about my services.
Thank you, bro. Newcomers really need to know this kind of stuff these days. Thank you.
Appreciated :"D
I know this is going to sound dumb but could I add a merch shop with my portfolio website? For context I'm thinking of doing some light freelancing but I also am thinking of making a T-shirt shop. Should I make them two separate sites or one?
Separate. Put the shop on your main site as a proof of work or example of work, and add your main site to the shop somewhere in the footer.
Hey Satori, quick question:
What's the value of having a website portfolio in comparison to having Behance with awards/features, or an Instagram account with lots of engagement?
More creative control, and it looks more professional
I think having a personal website these days is very dated. Everybody uses Behance and Instagram, having a website looks old
@@manassetotype7098 Exactly. Especially when someone finds your sm account and can easily see if you are the right person or not.
Social proof? People are engaging with you in comments/likes/following.
Credibility? You have awards/features on Behance. More views, more comments, more followers.
@@holyshiet787 agreed, i truly believe personal websites are a thing of the past now. unless you are a company or studio you dont need one
What about portfolios for non-Graphic Designers? Can you recommend a tutorial on how to make a simple portfolio on Canva?
1. How you can add value to a potential client and how can you solve their problems
2. What are some of the things we can do to sho wor demonstrate we can solve problems to potential clients
- In each project you should outline the problems that the client had so that might be the brands logo
- Like how you solved those problems how you used your skills and your experience to overcome those hurdles
3. Hook the attention of the audience or the viewer
then deliver the message once you've got their attention the graphic design portfolio is
then sell your skills services and any other design project
-ask yourself what kind of clients are you looking for?
- What kind of people are you looking to attract
- non graphics design then go to people whos knows nothing then get reviewed
4. Small amount of work without introducing too many project
do use mockups to design your portfolio
I love you Satoriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
hey thanks Agustina, have a great day/night
Currently making my first portfolio of something like 70 works to apply to my first job, wish me luck!
you've got this 💪
What would be the best way to make a portfolio without any work experience
Please give us a link or a sample of a good portfolio. It will really be helpful.
Hi Satori... please what software can I use to design my portfolio and guide on how to go about it?
indesign if you want pdf version you should know that by know if you had any graphic design work done
Hi! Quick question, is it necessary to place a photo of yourself in your own portfolio? I'm not very fond of doing that and wanted to know if I don't have to 😅
I would say: Yes, it‘s necessary. It builds trust because potential clients get to see a real face behind your brand for example.
Maybe a short video introducing yourself and your work would gain people‘s trust even more.
I mean, how do you feel visiting a website with and without a portrait of the business owner? Or how you feel watching a video of the person?
On the other side, who are the people that would never reveal their real face? That are scammers for example. And if you show who you are, people tend to trust you more.
That‘s how I see it.
Would love to get your review on my portfolio. Can i share my link?
You have very pleased voice
Thanks Maria :P :)
5:37 it's always good having an OPININION
Excellent take on things, maybe ensure you spell large headings correctly, just saying. Nice work :)
How about illustrators portfolios? How they can do to attract clients?
Niche style, showcase an existing client project really well, having a running theme, use illustrative skills to decorate the portfolio
Are there portfolio templates for graphic design? I don’t know how to design mine, I won’t design it yet, but I am new to graphic design currently I am an artist that paints and draws. And I felt drawn to graphic design because of designs and logos that every company or brand has. For example, Nike has logo for their sneakers, the Apple logo for the Apple products, and Microsoft logo for their products and applications everyone uses. I am still new to graphic design and I’m hoping to learn more.
Hello Satori! Please which website can i use to generate a link and create my portfolio?
You can use these
WordPress
Readymag
Adobe Portfolio
2:16 any link or name for the background video ?
I still don't know where to store my portfolio, when I build it
Opininion? Good information. But... check the tip section for spelling errors in the title graphic.

Satori I know this question may sound silly but is their a difference between a graphic designer portfolio besides someone who does only illustration. Please answer
digital illustration is graphic design, just it isn't that 'corporate'. However for the portfolio, the same rules apply. You want to show value to your potential clients. That means showing projects you worked on, your skills and how you added value to past clients
@@SatoriGraphics satori one more question. I Know illustrations are not that corporate but does that mean that a person has to settle with less pay 😂
@@itsdipganguly you are the one selling yourself
Hello Satori, I have a question. Does the background color of a product needs to be the color of a logo ? Is it a rule?
No it does not. It's often wise to use the brand identity colour scheme, but it isn't always the correct decision. It depends on the brief, the target audience, and a lot of other things
@@SatoriGraphics Thank you much
I really need a step by step guide because I hate building portfolios. I wish I could pay somebody to do it for me.
