What made me angry was that Sony turned down Popeye the movie over the garbage emoji one
Wait, we could have never had the emoji movie, and replaced it with A FREAKING POPEYE MOVIE?!?!?

You're still mad about that? I thought we forgave Sony
Thoroughly convinced that Emoji Movie was a fundraiser for Spider-verse.
That'd be the only acceptable reason for them to make it
Pretty sure they would’ve made more money on it if they advertised it that way 😂
The commercials should’ve been like, “hey, we know this is gonna be a sh!t movie but it’s just a fundraiser for this movie that will blow you away. So please watch the M E H movie so we can make the film of the decade. Thanks!”
huh..
my friend and i had to watch it (because we were hanging out and going to see a movie, but her little brother was there so we had to see something that would entertain him),,, so now i don't feel as bad about watching it.
It's so wild that the same studio that made Open Season went on to make Into the Spiderverse. That's character development.
and Across the Spider-verse, anyways have you seen the film if so what did you think

Hot take but I love open season. I saw it years ago and couldn’t stop laughing. I guess nostalgia bias puts it up on my list.
But they also made surfs up 2 so that already makes it the worst studio of all time

I feel like schaffrillas was one of the only people to actually take notice the God damn bagel
"I genuinely want to know why the people who made this movie thought a donkey and his annoying bird friend were more interesting protagonists than the parents of Jesus Christ" is legitimately my favorite line from any Schaffrilas video. It sounds so f*cking funny out of context and I quote it all the time for no reason at all other than the fact that I just want to say it
Like Jesus Christ, that’s Jesus Christ
The fact that there’s so many movies BELOW the emoji movie is saying something about Sony’s movie quality
Yeah, the fact that the movies who started to get something above 6 are all the way up until the 5/4 place and on is sad
It just goes to show how right and overhated AniMat was for bashing (pre-2019) Sony Pictures Animation to the ground.
Sure, before July 2018 (which was only a half-year before Into the Spider-verse came and finally saved the studio big time), AniMat was probably too harsh on the animation studio (to the point of FINALLY WISHING DEATH UPON THEM IN HIS EMOJI MOVIE REVIEW!!!!), but then again, at the end of the day, it’s great to see that he has the intelligence to bash Sony Animation every time it makes a film like all their direct to DVD sequels (Scared Silly being the only one of the four I don’t consider the worst of the worst. Bad? Sure. But terrible? Well, at least they actually tried to feel more like a genuine sequel to Open Season 1), Hotel Transylvania 3 and their trilogy of live-action remakes of the 2010s (The Smurfs 1 & 2 and especially Peter Rabbit 1. I haven’t seen Peter Rabbit 2, and I don’t think I want to…), which they made most of.

@@zoorockf1 lmao, those are perfect comparisons and you are very correct. If someone were to film a literal dumpster fire, it wouldn't compare to how much of a dumpster fire Surfs up 2 is.

Surf's Up is not just my favourite Sony movie, but is genuinely my all time favourite animated movie.
The soundtrack is perfect, the animation (particularly water physics) looks way ahead of it's time, plenty of endearing characters, brilliant voice acting, the mockumentary style is (or at least was at the time) very unique for the genre, and the psuedo handheld and GoPro camera shots are fantastic attention to detail

I have never seen someone talking about Arthur Christimas. It is defitenetly one of the most underrated animation filmes I have ever seen. Thank you Schaffrilas to show the world this marterpiece
Surf's Up is my all time favorite movie. I've seen it countless times. I put it on at work so I have something on in the background to break up the monotony without feeling compelled to spend time watching it. I fall asleep to it sometimes. I bought it on CZcams so I can watch it on plane rides. Something about it is just pure joy, and Cody's emotions are so infectious. I feel like it was LEAGUES ahead of anything else at the time it came out, and I feel like it hasn't aged a day. I mean, the water in that movie is goregeous! Perfect casting, perfect characters, perfect set pieces, perfect soundtrack, perfect score, perfect movie. I forget where I saw this quote from, but someone said that Surf's Up walked so that Into the Spider-Verse could run; I absolutely agree with that.
I think my favourite part about Wish Dragon is how the story isn't centered around romance but rather a boy trying to reuinite with a childhood friend after they had to split up because her family had to move. Its a lot more compelling to root for the two of them when the reasoning is "This person was an important part of my childhood and I want us to have a close friendship again after losing it" rather than your typical "I really like pretty lady and want us to be together".
Even though there are still many hints throughout the movie that the 2 of them are developing feeling for each other, and it kinda lets you assume the close friendship continues to grow until it turns into a romantic relationship later on.

I think Cloudy realy showed Sony's true potential that was hiding, and after the emoji movie I think they decided to go for quality over cash grabs, which seems to have really worked out with them. Hotel Transylvania may not be a great film story-wise, but I absolutely adore its rubberhose-style, energetic animation. I honestly think the animation makes the experience of watching it that much better.
Yeah, never was a big fan of those movies themselves, but I gave it a lot of points for doing something new in an industry that had gotten in a rut animation-wise. That's not to say that movies like Encanto, Moana, etc aren't beautifully animated, but Sony's willingness to try new things and succeed hopefully opens doors for Disney to do something a little less conventional and safe seeing how much money a lot of the Sony ones made.

I genuinely love how Sony Animation's most hated movie, The Emoji Movie, was followed up by their absolute best movie, Spider-Verse.
And yes, I know Hotel Transylvania 3 came between those two, but it felt like a gradual increase in quality for what this studio is capable of. It's still a mediocre film, but infinitely better than The Emoji Movie
The Star also came out between the two

54:22 THEY DIDN'T
Open Season has a worldbuilding problem that a lot of movies featuring forest animals do. Why are there no wolves? The only wolves that appear are werewolves, in Scared Silly. Because there's no such thing as regular, 'animal' wolves in this animal franchise. It's so stupid.
For me I would say Surf’s Up is at the top of what Sony has ever made from one scene. The scene where they ride waves and the voice overs of surfers talking about the feeling of being in a tube brings me to tears every time. No other movie has ever done this to me about a thing I don’t know or care much about. Yet it makes me feel like surfing is the only important thing in the world.
i just watched it today after years of thinking about how dumb i thought it was as a kid. my dad loves surfs up and i knew that going into it but was blown away by how much of it's charm i had forgotten about. holy fuck it's amazing. its beautiful and surprisingly hilarious. the reality documentary works really makes it shine. also almost none of the movie feels like filler, they use the time wisely and don't drag on past it's due time. the scene of big z and cody carving the surfboard is something I've been quoting for years because of my dad's love for the scene but only remembered today :)
I like the scene where they keep repeating Cody getting knocked out by the wave.
Fr Surf's Up strikes this super weird emotional chord with me despite it being such a clumsy excuse for a movie
And the movie is super funny as well. Listening to Shia LaBeouf scream when the wave hits on rewind was hilarious.
That scene where they describe riding in the tube is phenomenal. My dad used to surf when he was younger and he's told me that every which way they describe it is exactly that, you can't describe that feeling. You can only feel it and only so many skilled people can ever experience that. The only other scene that I think even comes close is at the end of the movie when Cody is riding in the tube himself while "You Get What You Give" is playing. The sheer glee I get from that scene is probably enough to power a city.
I've watched this movie way back before I could even remember, and it's always held a special place in my heart for being a comfort movie and one I can connect to my dad with. And that music they play will always give me goosebumps and make me so happy in a way that only Ghibli movies have achieved for me. I will sing the praises of this movie til the day I die.
Into the Spiderverse really is just way too good to be true. I went into the theatre not expecting much and then left with so much love for that universe and its characters. It shook me to the core seeing such a perfect movie
i think that’s what makes it so good everyone didn’t have high expectations
It fuckin shook me just seeing so much love and personality bleed through. That almost never happens with big animations and for a fuckin spiderman movie of all things to just let the film go nuts it feels like mistake from the execs in the best way possible
no but literally. i couldnt care less about most superhero movies and yet i ADORED spiderverse
Even though I knew that the Peter Parker in Miles's universe died since like 5 years before I watched the movie came out, when I watched it I became so sad that Miles's Peter died. I had NEVER felt this way about Peter dying in Miles's universe. Not only that, when I first saw the teaser for movie about different versions of Spiderman, something that I have loved from the start I heard about Spiderman, I was so happy this movie was being made.
My wife got me the info the spider verse art book for Christmas it's one of my favorite books I own now

Whenever you mention how bad Artemis Fowl is, I remember my dad being on a business trip and unable to sleep, so he wanted to watch a movie to make the boredom of tiredness more tolerable. Artemis Fowl might as well have chloroformed him. Knocked him out. It radiated so much melatonin that my dad, one who has a lot of trouble sleeping, was launched into a free trial of death by the SHEER UNADULTERATED GARBAGE Artemis Fowl was in every category.

While the entirety of The Mitchells vs The Machines is being (rightfully) worshipped, I don't think enough attention is being given to Aaron specifically. Neurodivergent characters are really hard to get right, so I'm really glad they portrayed him in a natural and respectful manner instead of focusing on going "hey, this dude has autism!!" all the time. His relationship with both his family and with Abby both feel super real. Matter of fact, he's probably the best instance of ND representation I've seen aside from Entrapta from She-Ra.
Maybe I'm just biased, since I'm also an autistic dinosaur lover like he is, and am ecstatic that a piece of mainstream media is at least trying to be up-to-date in the paleontology front. (Like, feathered raptors is one thing, but feathered _T. rex?_ That was unexpected.)
I agree with this. It probably speaks volumes about the fact that I never even noticed he was representing autistic people when I first watched the film, that's how reasonably it's portrayed. I thought he was just a bit socially awkward, but now you say it, it totally makes sense.
I just can't get past his voice actor sounding waaaaayyyyy off his age, otherwise I think he would've been easily my favourite character in the movie.
I appreciate how Aaron's and Katie's sibling relationship was treated in general tbh. It's such an overdone trope of siblings fighting each other which is mad annoying.
As someone on the spectrum myself, I can definitely see Aaron being autistic. One scene that stood out to me is his reaction to how the dinosaurs looked in the small museum. If anything, I definitely see myself in Aaron and a little bit with Katie too.
@@driftwood7046 I couldn’t agree more. I had no idea he was autistic. If anything, I thought he was just socially awkward (which I can relate to)

@@goobs62 no way home is sooo good (coming from someone who fully expected to hate it) but it's not even close to spiderverse 😭
I remember the only thing that really annoyed me about Spiderverse was not the movie itself but the behind the scenes video footage I watched afterwards in which I promptly began to roll my eyes a lot and ended up shutting it off from its near endless virtue signaling. There's a certain point where you hear the same line about how proud they are to have picked a minority/woman character to be Spiderman for once that it becomes obnoxious.
There were some people in my family who found the pig a little too campy for their tastes, which I understand. It didn't ruin anything for me. I still adore every aspect of the film, but I can see where that was a little much for some viewers.
