Toy Story 4 is the new #9, in-between Wallace & Gromit and Inside Out. Would've given the Oscar to How to Train Your Dragon 3 personally
Gotta agree
Schaff, gotta say it was good and all but not the perfect ending and also that the story is a bit dull
But hey opinions are opinions

2 things:
1. I remember being absolutely horrified of Spirited Away as a kid. For some reason the parents turning into pigs at the beginning scared me half to death as well as a lot of the creatures. I recently re-visited the movie being a teenager, and oh my god I cant see how I didn’t love this movie. It is such a masterpiece in every way possible and I’m so glad my dad kept trying to get me to watch it. It overjoyed me to see Schaffrillas go in deep detail on why it’s a masterpiece. Truly one of the best movies in existence.
2. This is kind of random but I have been watching ratatouille since I was 3 years old and I remember watching the scene where remmy is climbing up the building before that really beautiful shot of Paris and looking at the lady putting on makeup in the window and my four year old brain thinking “Hey, I wonder if that’s Remmys mom?” Lol it’s really random.
bro same spirited away scared the shit out of me as a kid for some reason
Young me ran away when the characters began to get eaten
That pig sence still gives me shivers to this day
Spirited away also scared me as a kid as well which is sad considering how good the movie is and the fact that the scene that scared me was when she was pulling out all that junk from the spirit
I’m with you ghibli go kinda psycho with things in movies XD
About the plotholes in Inside Out: if the core memories were sent to HQ, the memories would have turned into anger, disgust or fear, so they had to go with Joy. The fact that they wanted to way her up, shows how much Joy wants her to be happy as soon as possible and a bit of distrust in the other emotions, and fits her personality perfectly.
Wow! Never would’ve though of that as the reason why they don’t send the core memories to HQ through the chute, but it is definitely plausible.
Why wouldn't the gum commercial memory be red for anger? Also isn't sadness the only one established with that "ability"
@@jethromcgl3697 because the emotions are not rily
That was only happening with sadness, and not the other emotions. There are plenty of moments where Joy holds sad memories and they stay sad. It was happening with sadness because the move was making her sad without realising, and as soon as sadness touched the emotions, it spread to them because she wanted to feel sad from them anyway.

@@user-dy2ss1ru2x ikr?
You got a killer in your eyes son cause I don’t see it
for real! I watched it a few times on Nick or something as a kid and didn't appreciate it ofc because I was a kid, but I revisited it a few years ago and became hyperfixated on it. It's a story that gets better the more you interact with it because the DEPTH. OF THE METAPHOR AND ALLEGORY. its a lot. All Rango wants is to fit in and be the main character. He tries to do this, and succeeds! But he's only playing a role, he's not really like that, and he gets found out for it. Loses himself in the desert and faces the Spirit of the West who tells him the story was never about the main character. Thus allowing him to lose ego and become a true hero. Plus the messages about corrupt leadership, how "the march of progress" will squash everything you know and love for the sake of sustaining itself, sustainability in the desert when places like Vegas have golf courses that guzzle water contrasting with the surrounding desert, water standing in for money to show just how desperate the difference in rich and poor is? MWAH. magnifique.

Spirited Away hits me so hard as someone who had abusive and neglectful parents. I don't know if the metaphor was intentional at all, but I saw myself so much in the protagonist being forced to take care of herself in a surreal world filled with struggles, where her parents are pigs and she has to work hard just to get by, with initially no hope of escape. But, the world she inhabits is actually beautiful, and the fact that she maintains her kindness and sense of self is what helps her succeed and thrive there. She comes out able to handle anything, and there was value in that experience. It reminds me that I not only survived my childhood, but actually learned a lot from it, and can use what I learned to make the world better.
I feel like it probably hits similarly for anyone who felt very alone as a child for any reason. It's powerful to see such legitimate and believable success against hardship.
@@angelcaldwell4190 I am, thanks 🙂
I heard a lot of hype around it and decided to check it out and holy crap it was surprisingly good! I personally prefer the Incredibles as a film, but Spirited Away is so unexpectedly well made despite the character designs being completely bonkers and the world building only kinda fleshed out. It’s probably an 8-9/10 I’d say
This is arguably schaff's most timeless video.
Also fun fact, the only two movies in this list he hasn't reviewed in any other ranking or full on analysis video is Happy Feet and Rango.
honestly his analysis of happy feet is so confusing to me, especially the bit when he says that the story shifts away from mumble and 'suddenly' switches to religion and environmentalism. It feels like he wasnt really paying attention because the movie was always about those things. They were just in the background until they play a bigger role in mumbles story. the old penguins always thought mumble had no place in their society because they have very traditional views, which leads them to denying the existence of the humans that are causing the food shortage present throughout the movie. I wanna see him make a full review of it sometime just so i can see why he feels the way he does about it.
Good point. I haven't seen the movie in a while though so I wouldn't be able to tell
@@yendo1774it’s going to be a cinematic disaster video unfortunately

TheDragonKing yeah. The film is one of my favorites and for the mindless people who don’t understand, the reason why the main protagonist(Remi) is a rat,is because it shows how a rat thinks she feels about being in human civilization. It shows how Remi contrasts in a different environment and he has human motivations that he achieved and became a chef and wasn’t going to stay a stereotype.Thats why I love the film.It has a rat that wants to be more than a scavenger.

That this was a pointed explanation as to why she didn’t just do that, in fact she tried to send herself WITH the memories at some point, despite the fact the tubes were only meant for the memories.
One thing that I freaking love about Studio Ghibli movies are that even with the super natrual (Totoro, the bath house monsters etc.), they still manage to feel grounded in reality in some way. I always get a warm, fuzzy feeling whenever I see them and they just feel so cared for. They start out with nothing and just develop the story. No evil villan, no universe killing machines, just slice of life with a little bit of fantasy sprinkled on.
Massive respect for Studio Ghibli
RATATOUILLE IS BEAUTIFUL. it took them seven years to make. they went to paris and studied the architecture INTENSELY. plus la vie is a beautiful song.
Oof one month later but yeah they even consulted chefs from everything there is. From chopping ingredients to the color of your pots and pans. It made the movie a masterpiece
Yeah I know right there's just something about it that makes it so beautiful whether it be from the coolest quotes to the delicious delicacies to the awesome ass hell antagonist ( talking about Anton Ego not the short stack chef which I think is the only bad thing about the movie ) that just makes the film so mesmerizing. Also I agree, Pixar is really good at music
Also as crab Guy said it is very sophisticated
And sophisticated yet also funny are my personal favorite
Best Movie all time
What I also love is that they don't make the antagonist the main problem. They make themselves the problem. Their failures, pride, and lies complicate things for them, instead of the antagonist making their lives miserable.

Not quite correct.
In the interview in Question, he was asked about forcing himself to write a movie, with Happy Feet 3 being used as the given example.
As his reply, he said that inspiration has to strike about a movie and not being able to force out a plot outta thin air. So if someone put a gun to his head and told him to write Happy Feet 3, he'd rather they pulled the trigger.
Which yes, means he did say that, but taken out of its context has a way different tone.

In my opinion, rango should be higher, the fact that they took such a cliche, and made into something that talks about self discovery while also keeping the comedy as a kids movie is really amazing, the design of the characters are creative and have a lot of backstory in it, while also most of these characters having a personality even if they have like a screentime of 3 quotes, the combat scenes are amazing and the way it explores fantasy is really good, i could say its a masterpiece, but it is not, there are mistakes that they did in the movie, such as the slow pacing start, still it is an amazing film, and incredibly underrated, no one can change my mind, i stand my point that, in my opinion, it should have been higher.
I'm so upset about the beginning of the movie. I mean, it has some value to itself, and I love the scene with the guy that was roadkill, but it adds very little other than establishing his lack of any skill, other than acting. Otherwise, a complete banger of a film.

The criticisms of Inside Out’s plot holes kind of remind me of the “plot holes” in The Journey to the West. Inside Out is an allegory for accepting emotions other than happiness and maturing and growing as a person. I love that film so much.

The fact that "Your Name" and "A Silent Voice" weren't even nominated is genuinely depressing.
Your Name is overrated lol, sure it looks great, but if you saw lot's of anime the story isn't something special. Makoto Shinkai just makes his movies with the same scheme (Tenki no Ko). A Silent Voice grabbed me more emotionally (especially when I struggled with high depression back then) and I think this one needs more attention.
@@kaziq1x Whilst I agree with what you're saying about the Your Name's story, the animation is so SOO impressive. Especially for a traditionally animated film. Fun Fact: Happy Feet was originally intented to be for mature audiences, in the first draft of the script there was swearing, death scenes, the emperor penguins' religion would be more like a sect, and at the end there would be penguin-aliens who intended to destroy the Earth due to the damage the humans cause to the ecosystem but they change their minds after they start to help the penguins. But of course, the studio decided they wanted a family film and they scrapped all these ideas
That movie would've been 10x more interesting

@@One-pz3zk yeah pretty much...
The problem is not Disney. The problem is the juries are always favoring Disney movies while ignoring stop motion and foreign movies. They either need to change the award to the best American movie and stop pretending they are diverse or get more foreign candidates and do their job properly, especially when it comes to animation. Yes, some Disney and Pixar movies absolutely deserved winning it but the way the Academy Award sees animation lesser is disrespectful to the art form of film. Animation is a medium, not a genre.

I think the moment is more him knowing who he wife was and knowing that she would have chosen to save the bird, and him honoring that knowledge by letting go of trying to get to Paradise falls and instead saving Kevin, because he knows Ellie would have done the same and it's a better way to honor her in his mind.

Spirited Away is a brilliant masterwork and in my top 50 movies ever made. It's as much a classic as the masterworks from the legends like Kubrick, Coppola, Scorsese, and others, which isn't surprising as it was made by Miyazaki. While I will admit that my love for animated movies has gone down, Spirited Away still holds a special place in my heart
Gotta add to Zootopia - it has some of the greatest world-building of all time imo.
It honestly makes equal sense as cars,
yet everyone complains that cars are bad because we don't know if cars can have sex, and not a single soul complained how zootopia's economy is kinda broken when you think about it

The fact that just talking about Coco and Spirited Away's emotional impact had an emotional impact on me is a testament to their power.
There's a reason Spirited Away has held the crown as the best animated movie ever for almost 20 years now. IF you're one for emotionally moving movies though I'd suggest watching Your Name and A Silent Voice it's some of the few movies to hit the emotional level of Coco and Spirited Away.
I love those two movies
I really don't think there's any movies that can top Ghibli movies for me
I completely agree with both, but specially with coco. Just watching his take on the ending of the movie made me tear up.
Same. Was not expecting to tear up from this

The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Wallace and Gromit and Wall.E are the best two here. It’s a story with soo many intertextual layers - then it would be Shrek and Toy Story 3. Plus those sum up the lessons and messages of my childhood. They got me into storytelling and how it’s a form changes people’s perceptions on life
I still feel Spirited Away takes the cake. Studio Ghibli is one of the most incredible things to happen in my life, and I don't think I've not cried in any of the movies of theirs I've seen. The stories they tell are like no other, but yet are so simple, but also so complex. As schaff said, it's pure magic.

2 things.
1: I used to be absolutely horrified by the mere thought of Curse of the Wear Rabbit. It terrified me to tears as a kid. I'm glad that as I got older, I can appreciate it for the genuine great movie that it is now.
2: I can only recall seeing Spirited Away twice. Once was with my grandmother a few years ago, which she said was a really good movie despite not being a big fan of animation, and the second time was last November when I saw it with a friend for Ghibli-fest. Both times I felt like a part of me changed after watching it. And I can't even begin to explain why. I just know. Please, if there's just one movie you absolutely need to see out of all these Oscar winners, it needs to be this one. Spirited Away just gives you this otherworldly feeling while watching it, and it really is Miyazaki's magnum opus.

I know Brave is a mess of a movie but it will always have a special place in my heart as Eldest Daughter Syndrome personified. I saw this movie with my mother when it came out and Merida's relationship with her mother is so similar to mine. Especially about wanting a feminine daughter and being stuck with a futch who may or may not be a lesbian (100% projecting on that one). And the fact her brothers could literally set fire to the whole kingdom and yet only get a slap on the wrist is so sadly relatable. Also, the dad loving all the masculine qualities in his daughter when she's young and then expecting her to automatically do a 180 and become this stereotypical feminine woman and disliking that she's still masculine when she's older is also (sadly) relatable. I think this movie would've worked much better if it delved into the aspects and struggles of the only daughter who is more masculine than her parents would like. I think it could've explored rigged gender roles and gender socialization in a very nuanced way but just as we were getting there BAAM MEE MUMS A BEAR. I swear every time Disney's got a great family drama planned out someones gotta turn into a goddamn bear. Disney wants to have whooo girl power yass movies without actually exploring our society's seeded issues on womanhood and gender roles and it just comes off as shallow and corporate every time. Also doesn't help they usually frame these girlpower stories in time periods like 1700s France and just blame the time period on being ignorant and not on OUR society so people don't actually have to use any fucking brain cells and just watch Emma Watson want to fuck a lion and promote literacy which is definitely where feminism fucking starts and ends. Sorry if this sounds rambly I'm writing this at 3am and got really mad about Disney's -1st wave feminism bullshite asking hard-hitting questions like if women... are people?
right like!!! ik the movie isnt the BEST but i disagree with schaf when he says it’s devoid of charm… i love it sm
I love your take on this, family dynamics really are the start and structure of a lot of gender roles, for better or worse. I think it would help a lot of people if more stories, particularly those for kids, explored that.

I still think Wall-E is under appreciated - the music, the emotion created from characters that don’t talk, the green message, the laziness message, the artificial intelligence sentience message, the love story, the incredible animation, the amazing story telling, I could go on... it’s such a unique movie compared to most other animated Pixar films. The villain is a machine which doesn’t make it evil, right, or wrong - it’s just following orders. It’s literally an embodiment of “show, don’t tell”. For me, it’s on par with the incredibles.

Speaking of attention to detail in Spiderverse, the creators even went as far as to make Peter B’s frame rate different from Miles’. Throughout the movie the spider heroes are animated at 24 frames a second while Miles is animated at *12* frames a second, why is that? Well, because Miles isn’t a real Spider-Man until the climax of the movie where he gets his own suit and realizes who he is. He progresses to got from 12 all the way back up to 24 like his fellow spider companions.
