I've been told "really" old Nissan's are reliable. Not sure which my dad had perhaps before I was born. (Earliest memories are Dodge before the parents went Toyota.) So it's good to see a Nissan to get excited about.

I am actually more impressed seeing such cars in mint condition than I am most exotics. I was a teen in the 80s so this is a memory grabber. Things like Ferrari, Lambo, etc we expect there to be many low mileage cars, but something for the everyday driver like this Pulsar still being new is in my opinion, priceless

Totally agree. I was on the NJ turnpike about a year ago and I drove up behind a Ferrari 599...pretty amazing BTW. When he switched lanes there was a mid-eighties basic Ford Escort (in surprisingly good condition) right in front of us! I was more excited to see that. I remember exclaiming to my wife that the running/driving Escort was more rare than that 599.

The pulsar had a target market for college students. Nissan came to Long Beach State university when I went to school there to do the research and market study for it. The design and engineering departments at CSULB used to compete with Art Center on some automotive projects and we were the influence for the different removable back options. I always wanted to own one of those when they came out after I graduated.

Like he said in previous videos, once you start driving a low mileage older car, leaks are going to start and things will break so it has to be expected. The one thing that would be good to do it to at least flush the brake fluid and maybe change the calipers and wheel cylinders as you don't want the brakes going out because of a blown seal. (I need to do that with my seldom driven 69 Firebird).

Awww! I used to have a 1988 Pulsar SE with the 1.8 liter twin cam 16 valve engine w/ 125 hp. Mine was a 5 speed manual. I loved that car. It took me everywhere. The tweed seats were pretty cool. When you tilt the steering wheel, the entire dash tilts, This was a modular car. You can take off the rear hatch and the t-tops, you have a convertible; if you just remove the hatch, you have a sorta truck, or you can get the Kammback option, and you have a small wagon. The rear hatch has a third brake light, but if you open it, you'll see another brake light on the headliner that becomes the third brake light when you remove the hatch. Also, the twin cam models used the CA16/CA18 engine, which had a distributorless ignition. Sorry for the rant, but they were pretty cool cars to drive.

My father worked for a Nissan dealer when these were new. According to him, there was a turbo charged version that was recalled by Nissan due to engine problems - every single example was supposed to be repurchased and crushed, apart from a few folks who may have kept them voluntarily. Nissan also released a van similar to the Toyota van around the same time (mid 1980s); these were also re-purchased and crushed.

I owned a 1983 Pulsar turbo sometime around 1992. They only made them for 1/2 year. That thing was nasty quick. could keep up with the NX’s 10 years later. I do agree that the turbo did have issues. Mine didn’t have a problem with the turbo specifically but the wiring under the driver seat had issues and so sometimes you’d have to wiggle the wires to get the turbo to kick in. But it moved pretty quick. Got 30mpg too if I recall right. Had the removable sunroof too. Had it until the flywheel cracked and I sold it to a guy who was a pulsar nut.

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 Před 9 měsíci

Wonder the recall was emissions related. This is since in Australia all this body style were sold as Nissan EXA turbos from about 1984 to 1990.
Not many engine problems but younger drivers crashed them a lot with the turbo power causing torque steer when used too much in other than a straight line.
Different naming in Australia. Pulsar was reserved for the much higher selling four door sedan that sold until 2005. Sports turbo coupe might have had a Pulsar badge on it but always called an EXA here.
The first of quite a few turbo versions of Japanese cars, like the Skyline R32, we got here with our emission standards being near the same as Japan. Australia being a right hand drive market like Japan helped too.

Ended up buying a 14 year old '90 Sonata from my uncle for a grand over many payments when I was 19. Pulsar ended up eventually being scrapped, I was sad but I never had the money to rejuvenate it. I loved the T-tops and the zig zag tail lights. I drove it like a maniac on little twisting country roads in New Jersey. The back seat was basically just a padded package shelf. I always wanted to swap on the sportbak hatch to turn it into a mini wagon but I never saw Nissan offering them. Had it for 4 or 5 years, drove it across the country to Oregon. Eventually it got stolen, trashed, and badly repaired. Traded it in for a Honda Accord.

I bought a brand new red 1987 Pulsar NX XE, which was the base model (like this one). Even though a 'base model', it came with an AM/FM radio with 4 speakers that had plenty of oomph to be heard with the T-tops and/or hatch off! The first addition was vanity license plates that read "NXTC" (I though I was so clever - haha!) and a couple months later, I replaced the OE 13" wheels and plastic(!) wheel covers with American Racing wheels that 'mimicked' the tail lights (15x6 w/205/50R15 tires) and it looked like it should have on the showroom floor. Had more than enough power for my commute and besides, I wasn't racing anyone....didn't NEED to, as it was just a cool little cruiser, especially with the T-Tops off. Even better was REMOVING the rear hatch and it was like a full convertible - very cool when cruising the nearby beach town! Neat detail/feature was that the 3rd brake light was hidden under the rear 'wing'. When the hatch was removed, it exposed ANOTHER 3rd brake light up along the roof, which was 'reverse-switched' and not operational when the the hatch was on. Also, with the hatch off, all of the channels/surrounds/trim were neatly finished off and designed to be seen. A really fun and cool car that never gave me any trouble, until it oddly lost 2nd gear and then 4th gear when it got to 150K (shifting 1-3-5 - haha!) Very odd, as the car wasn't run hard or power/speed-shifted, as if you COULD with barely 100-hp! I couldn't justify a transmission so ditched it for a sweet deal on a 12 year-old 1981 280ZX 5 speed with only 40K on the odo, which didn't have T-Tops, but HAD A/C!! Even though an older car, definitely an upgrade, but still; that Pulsar NX was a great little car and despite the auto trans in this one, I would LOVE to purchase it. I STILL have those American Racing wheels and would be on the car the next day!

Thanks Mr. Wizard. After seeing the (repeated) quality of Bob's cars on your channel, I wouldn't completely rule out the chance that I might purchase a vehicle from him in the future - and I'm in Tennessee. From his eye for unique quality vehicles, from your compliments about him and the way he (and you) do business, to the inventory and testimonials on his website....the guy can provide things that just aren't widely available (including good service). Continued success to you both!

Wow! My wife was so excited to see this video as she owned this exact same vehicle except it was in a light blue color. She ended up selling it back in 1995 - 96. The black plastic detail right below headrest is how it came standard - nothing missing there (6:22). She loved the vehicle but it was no longer practical for us once we had a young child with need of a car seat. It was a really fun car to drive - several road trips between Iowa, SD, MT and Idaho. Thanks for this stroll down memory lane.

Such a fun sporty little economy car, feels so much more nuanced and imaginative than today’s identical little norm core bumps. Nissan was really killing it in the late 80s and 90s, I had a gorgeous Maxima and the best Pathfinder… I’d kill to own this car with a stick and the shooting break attachment. Bravo! 👏

My first car was a Nissan... an 89 240sx, but it had the drive train (3L/5-speed), suspension and 4-wheel disc from a 90 300zx... It was a rocket ship for a 16 year old...!!! Unfortunately, it met its demise in a hurricane... It turns out that salt water in your engine is a bad thing...!!! My 2nd thru current vehicles have been old Camaros and Chevys....! Thanks for the time capsule... Keep up your awesomeness and go enjoy some nature today... Also, don't forget to compliment someone today...

No way! I LOVED MY PULSAR! You see lots of CRX's but few Pulsars. My 1st car was a 1987 Pulsar NX SE 5 speed 1.6l twin cam motor (engine code ca16de) 110hp 99ftlb of torque. It was my 'realistic' dream car. My dad and I rebuilt an '80 fox body with a 351 windsor. Mom got scared that it was too much car. She was prob right! So many memories with thay car! It was common to remove the t-tops and the rear hatch and just drive with the t-bar.
The best was taking a date home and pulling over at night to look at the stars.
The back seat was a joke, but at least it allowed you to recline the seat. I slept many nights in my Pulsar.

My mom had one of these when I was growing up. Hers was black, with a manual transmission, and had T tops. To this day, that was the only brand new car she's ever had. She bought it new in 1987 (1988 model) and sold it to my cousin in 2007 with almost 300,000 miles on it amd a whole lot of rust (thanks MN winters). It unfortunately met its end when my cousin gave it to her friend, who turned it into a demo derby car. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, Wizard 😁
