    Confession time, when Sarah talked about the laces on the Hoka Cielo and said "temped to swap the laces out for something a little less stiff and more floppy but that's my personal preference" It tickled my inner child mode and I giggled and I'm still giggling now. don't aks me why its just been one of them days. 🤣

    Sarah an average runner?!?
    Nope not anymore!!! 3:30-45 marathon, soon to be sub-20min 5km.
    Maybe she was, but now she is the champion of amateur runners.
    Would love to see a stand-in for Anna (though she is an Ultra beast) whilst she is away. Some1 to keep Tom on his toes at the 5-6min/km pace.
    Sarah has clearly reached Beast Mode and is only going forwards!! 🎉

    There are so many carbon plated shoes these days, you could probably do a whole marathon just testing over 1 km. It is really hard to tell the difference and appreciate you being able to test these in a video. Surprised that none of the other premier brands like Nike, Puma and ASICS were included in this round?

      I relate to Tom. He has my size and weight, although im tad faster than him and Sarah. Most CZcams running testers are really athletic which is lovely for them, but difficult to relate to. When it comes to shoes i am somewhere between 2e and 4e width. Most of the athletic CZcamsrs seem to have narrow feet.

    I have been loving my current combination of the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 and the Pro 4. The Speed has been a good shoe for faster training runs and the Pro has really worked well for me in 10k and half marathon races. I'm probably going to run a marathon in the Pro later this year. I feel i'm still a too slow runner for the Elite but might have to give it (or the Elite 2) a go one of these days

    I’ve had a pair of the Adidas shoes for quite a while and I rarely run in anything else because they do everything well. I’m not a fast runner, but even on my slowest recovery runs they’re still comfortable. I’ve never thought of them as being at all unstable and have run on various surfaces in them without issue. I have no idea if they make me faster or not, they just feel great. Mine have done hundreds of km’s now and they still look and feel as good as new

      Best shoes I've ever bought, 5k to marathon and even 50km trail run😂. They are not good on trails, but they just work so well for me, I don't get injured and i just seem to have a better run when i wear them.
      However, I remember putting them on for the first time and thinking they were unstable in corners. Clearly not the case anymore.

    I just tried Altra Vanish Carbon 2 yesterday. Those are my first super shoes. That run yesterday made me believe that 90min half marathon is actually possible. Would like to see how those compare to other carbon plate shoes as those are the only ones with wide toe-box which is a must for me.

    I reckon I get about a minute back on a 5km and maybe two and a half minutes on a 10km (comparable effort and HR) carbon vs normal. I'm sitting around 27 mins for 5km and 58 mins for 10km though, so I guess your mileage may vary... (well not mileage, but time!)
    The carbons definitely seem to help with reduced impact and recovery though (at ~105kg I can feel the plate through the foam if I'm not light enough on my feet).

    Maybe not a super shoe, but the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 is my go-to fave for any run, short or long, and I've recently acquired the Pro 3 (definitely a super shoe) for less than $150 USD and am absolutely loving them so far, even though the insole gets pretty squeaky when soaked in sweat (it's REALLY hot here). They feel so comfortable for me that I'm not tempted to shop around, though your comments about the Cielo have intrigued me.

  • @headstart.running

    Ive been lucky enough to have access to very deep discounts on shoes recently and have a bunch to choose from:
    - Nike Vaporfly 3
    - Adidas Adios Pro 3
    - NB SC Elite v3
    - Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris
    I pick a different shoe for different occasions but agree every one of these is good for 10-15s/km over an everyday runner like a Pegasus or 1080.
    I don't think a 1k time trial is the best test of the shoes however - you need a good lengthy tempo block within a long run to test a potential marathon shoe: 30k with 15k at race pace? How about a back-to-back comparison of a few of these Sarah!!! :)
    I do love my Adios 3 as a long run shoe - and of all my super-shoes its probably the most durable.
    Great video though - good to show that these shoes do help non-elites in the middle of the pack as well as the speedy front of the pack!

  • @MrMaloney010
    @MrMaloney010 Před měsícem

    I went for Adios Pro 3s and love them. I bought them for marathon races, hitting significant PBs over the past 12 months. Partly down to along period of consistent training. Whilst I do feel they make me faster, I feel the big benefit has been that my legs feel much much less fatigued at the end. Like others have said, I'd like to see some feedback over longer distances as I'm sure some will be better suited for 5ks and others marathons. It can't be back to back comparisons like here, but maybe you could share shoes across a range of runners rather than multiple runs by 1 or 2 runners.

    I have not found that they make a slow runner like myself consistently any faster, I splurged and bought Saucony endorphin pro 3s this year. While I do notice I can put down some faster paces in them, I still have days when it doesn't seem to make any difference. I like them a lot, but at the price point, I'm yet to be convinced on the benefits for most of us average runners to spend that much. But if you have the cash, why not 😊

    It would be cool to see a full slate of these shoes up against each other featuring the whole team, each in a different pair of shoes-you could race a baseline 10K in everyday trainers, then come back a few days later and all run a 10K each in a different pair of carbon plated shoes-then compare the time improvement by percentage, which would account for the differences in each runner.

  • @opinionomated
    @opinionomated Před měsícem +1

    Super-shoes are great and all. But when I see the differences here, and then I look at the recent world records by (for example) Faith Kipyegon and Jess Hull, it prompts me to ask "Are they actually running better than the previous WR holders, or is just it all in the shoes?".

    Appreciate the video... Coming up to our 4th Loch Ness Marathon before 3rd London next April. Currently I run in Brooks GTS 21s because of flat feet and pronation though I do love my New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 v3 LDN24 shoes that I treated myself too at the running village this year (I liked the colours :-) ) for shorter training runs. Cannot decide whether to take a punt on carbon plated/rodded shoes for the next marathon or not... An expensive experiment if you don't get on with them, though those Kipruns seem intriguing and quite a bit more affordable.

  • @paultranter3285

    I often analyse my running data after training and carbon plated shoes definitely make a difference... but only if I'm running over a certain pace. I borrowed some Vaporfly's to see what the 'carbon plated shoe' fuss was all about (as I assumed it was a vanity purchase for hobby runners like me), and I was most surprised by how comfortable they were. I had heard that they were a bit rubbish for your feet, but I did actually really like them to run in. I am not convinced that they were massively faster than my other road shoes (New Balance Rebel v4's, which replaced some v2's), but I suspect that they may be easier to live with over a marathon distance, and that you might perhaps feel a bit less smashed up at the finish. Also I think it depends on your foot strike. I run trail ultras, and am quite a neutral mid-foot striker, but I think if you were on your toes the whole time you would probably notice more of a difference - they were fun going up 10% hills, but I really had to lean forwards on flatter ground to get anywhere.

My last 10K race I did in my daily trainers Saucony Ride 15 and it felt very ok... or just familiar. Probably will wait for some end-of-season discounts and treat myself after all.

    I wouldn't use any of those 4, I've got Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris, Hoka Rocket X2 and Nike Alphafly V.3 for my super shoes, backed up with original Metaspeed Sky, Nike Vaporfly V.2 and V.3 and two pairs of Alphafly V.1

      I have the Hoka Rocket X2 and love them for anything up to half marathon distance, but am considering either the Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris or Nike Alphafly 3 for my next pair of race shoes. How do they compare and when would you use one over the other?

    • @TheHutchRuns
      @TheHutchRuns Před měsícem +1

      @@davidtaylor3 I’d say the ASICS are even faster than the Hoka for up to half but Hoka feel like they are a bit softer. Alphafly 3 for half and upwards, just a brilliant fast cruising shoe

      @@TheHutchRuns thanks for the response. I’m probably leaning towards the ASICS for the type of running I do. I also have the ASICS Superblasts for daily running, so I imagine the Metaspeed Sky Paris would be similar but faster.

    I'm a long time brooks runner and i'm kind of amazed how badly they have done with their carbon plate shoes. None of them have been well received despite them developing many versions over many years.

    Probably an unpopular opinion amongst this community but do people not see this as a disingenuous way to run and/ or compete? With, let’s be real, artificial spring and additional assistance from a shoe? I understand that any advantage to be gained (legally) in competition may as well be taken, but this isn’t truly the runner or athlete achieving the time, it’s with the help of a shoe. If they couldn’t do it with a lesser (or dare I say, minimalist) shoe, then why does it count?
    This isn’t intended to accuse or inflame, rather incite discussion, and I’m happy to remain open-minded.

    I don't think they make any difference to anyone other than an elite athletes who measures their success in seconds. It's just marketing for people who are happy to part with their hard-earned when they don't need to. I get a 19:15 5K with £39 Aasics.

      And marketed for hobby runners who are willing to open the wallet widely.
      And even for elite runners I don't see much benefit. The current 10000m WR is lousy 6 seconds faster than 20 (!!) years ago.
