  • This 36 minute film captures the events of Marlborough’s Mop Fairs of 1991. In particular, it features one of the last appearances of the much celebrated fairground firm, R E Edwards & Sons Ltd.
You will also see lots of once familiar faces. If you recognise anyone, please do leave a comment below.
The Mops are among Britain’s oldest fairs and are held by Royal Charter granted to the town in 1204. They take place in the magnificent arena of Marlborough High Street and began as an event where goods could be sold or bartered. By the 19th Century, the Mops had evolved into hiring fair, which was then held twice a year. At the beginning of the 19th Century, hiring had all but died out and was replaced by early forms of the types of entertainments we see today. Whatever form they take, Marlborough’s Mops continue to be one of the few occasions during the year when the majority of townsfolk together in one place.
    I hope you enjoy it.

Excellent video. I particularly like the special effects and music which accompanied the fairground night scenes for mop 2. Brought back some loverly memories. Thanks. I particularly love Ghost Trains.

Lovely video of the old rides:
1st set is Preston & Barbiari "Daytona" dodgem cars on a Lang Wheels track,
2nd set has Spaggiari, Barbiari, Duce "Alfetta" dodgem cars on an Orton & Spooner track,
Jenning's Waltzer is a Lakin model,
    PWS (mk2) Sizzler,
    Norson Power Orbiter
    Modern Products "Ladybirds" kids roundabout,
Helter Skelter is a Supercar "Sky Liner" model,
    Hayes Fabrications Ferris Wheel,
    Cadoxton Roundup,
    Bennett Paratrooper (I think),
Not sure who made the ghost train,
    Lovely footage :)
