Hellblade 1, wearing headphones, is the best sound design I've ever heard.
The amount of monsters appearing over time, is meant to express Senua's becoming overwhelmed, which plays into the finale

I actually really align with Greg on this one. Audio, visual, and art style were amazing. I found very little fun with the gameplay loop though. Didn’t finish, and plan to just watch a let’s play so I can finish the story

It was really awful-I have been a fan since 2015, and it’s the first time Greg has said something that I really, really felt was awful.

Funny thing about 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn was one of my most anticipated games... because I thought it was Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I did ultimately like both, a lot, though. So kinda worked out.

Biggest thing with the combat I've noticed watching others play is that it doesn't tutorialise. So you get people who haven't figured out how to block just rolling around (especially KB+M) or just backing away because they've not realised the voices will call out moves when something attacks from off screen. Or even not figuring out the kick and what it does. I hope the second improves a bit in introducing the tools as well as adding a little more variety to what you fight.
Played it when I got the series X and quickly became one of my favorite games of the last generation. It really cemented it when I watched the documentary that comes with the game and they showed how they designed the game by turning symptoms of psychosis into game mechanics
By the end I felt like one of senua's voices. I hate bullies, and everytime a voice would bring her down I would feel myself arguing it and saying "dont listen to it". When I caught myself it was a strange by amazing experience. Wearing headphones was an important part of this.
I am big fan of reexamination of the old games. I wish game media do this more frequently.
1.) People's taste might change over the time. For example early 2010s people wanted to see long openworld games. And linear game was negative. Now these days people don't have tolerance to openworld games. People want short linear games.
2.) Bugs might be fixed or patches might balance the game. DLCs might complete the experience. Or vice versa. For example Overwatch, Diablo 4.
3.) Because of the stupid tweeter crowd some games are overhyped and overrated. And some of them are might be underrated. Also controversy around game might sour the experience. For some games, best time to play when the annoying tweeter crowd move away to ruin other new releases. For example Last of Us Part 2. Holly shit the negativity around that game.
4.) Games might be overshadowed by another big releases.
5.) Sometimes when you replay the game, it grows on you. When I played God of War 2018, I didn't like it that much. I rushed the game a little bit. But I replayed it slowly before Ragnarok came and it ended up one my favorite game of that generation.

I think the core of the games concept is that it’s about psychosis and they can’t make psychosis like fun. It has to be grueling. It’s why I’m worried about the sequel being more playable and fun because it might gamify it.

One thing that I found super interesting was that I would get overwhelmed with the voices at times and had to stop or pause. Someone with this psychosis cant do that. The perspective is really important.
Hellblade is easily in my top 10 games of all time. I agree the combat was mediocre but one thing that wasn’t mentioned that improved the combat to me was what they told you in the beginning of the game as to what would happen to you if you died too much.
That statement completely changed my perception of combat and heightened it despite how lackluster the actual controls and movement were.

It was a 9/10 for me. It started off kinda slow but the latter half had me hooked. I loved the gameplay mix of combat exploration and puzzle. I enjoyed the combat being simple. It was refreshing compared to say Witcher or Elden Ring. That said, I hope to get more gameplay depth out of the sequel. Similar experience to the Far Changing Tides. Starts slow but by the end I was in love. Side note, Ninja Theory gameplay in DMC is masterful imo. Complex yet easy to use. I don't really understand the hate tbh
Game aside Senua’s Saga has imo the best acting performance in gaming. Such an absolutely raw/vulnerable performance. It’s unreal that it was her first acting performance/job.
8.5 for me and most user scores, so I had a bit of a hard time understanding Greg's 6.5... Story is the focus, I enjoyed the non-stressful puzzles, and the combat would have also been flawless for the short experience this is if it just didn't have the auto-lock-on

I just beat this game for the first time this week to finish it before the sequel comes out. Like Greg I tried it multiple times and fell off. I was determined this time and I think it was a really fun experience. I think the last half of the game with the sword trials and a few cool bosses and story moments won me over. I would probably fall in the middle and say 7/10.

A lot of changes and he’s the guy in charge he’s in everything so far making it all happen.
Narrative carries this game so much. I had so much fun walking, hearing the voices, and puzzle-solving, but I dreaded every combat encounter. It's serviceable but fighting basically the same enemy over and over again for hours got incredibly boring.
I need to mention the final horde fight: I got very comfortable with the gameplay at the end so when the enemies didn't stop, I legit thought it was a bug of the game.
Haven't been able to finish this game since having a few psychotic episodes myself it really makes me uncomfortable.
Is the sequel going to be delayed? It seems like Xbox wants it to fail by not taking about it at all
All these years watching you guys, and that’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard Greg say. Which says a lot about how great a person he is. But it was still wince inducing and I wish he’d put his hand up and said that was out of line.

Been a fan since 2015 and Patreon supporter for years. Greg’s response to Parris sharing something real about his lineage was awful and embarrassing, imho. Parris took it in stride. But I hope there can be time to reflect and grow for Greg.
