    Well...I'm a 70-yr-old guy and just today I wondered if maxi-pads could be used in my planters, particularly the coco fiber ones. Here in central Florida (9b), the pots dry out aggravatingly quickly. I ran to CZcams and I'm glad to see that the pad idea has been used.(I'm not embarrassed, but will be discreet....😊). I've previously used discarded bath towels, wash cloths, and even blankets. They work fine, though bulky, but the carpenter ants like them, too, so I see that the disposable napkins can be more practical. Thanks for boldly showing us (guys) this advantageous tip!

    I put one of those cheap clear plastic saucers in the bottom. Works great

  • @melissazoeller6675

    I use a cheap plastic pot saucer, it’s about 1.5 inches deep so it has a bit of a water reservoir, it doesn’t allow soil to escape, it’s reusable and comes in various sizes. I paid 1.25 for 6 small ones at Dollar Tree.

    • @VelvetCrone
      @VelvetCrone Před rokem +2

      i use the terra cotta saucers too. That way I don't have to compromise my organic strawberries or tomatoes, and whatever. but seriousy... what are guys bothered by sanitary napkins? maybe we should stop feeding that old chesnut and let it die.

  • @dakotahstr
    @dakotahstr Před 2 lety +33

    Last year I line my terra cotta pots with an old towel. It worked amazing. Just cut it to fit. I lined the whole pot then added soil. Try it , it worked well going to do this to my fibre planters this year.

      I lined my basket with a plastic bag with drainage holes in it last spring and put a petunia in it. It lasted through the Georgia heat and then lasted through the winter with 20 degree temps. Its still alive after our recent month-long drought. I guess the plastic kept it warm in the winter and moist enough during the summer. That's one tough petunia and one hardworking bag!

    Last year was the first time I used the coco fibre, My boss went through a divorce and threw away 2 beautiful metal hanging planters like in your video, so I went dumpster diving lol. Was so aggravated how they always dried out though. I am in gerogia and it gets hot!! What I did was use a Walmart shopping bag and cut them to fit and that did the trick for me. Also another tip is you can try a product called soil moist. Its small polymer pieces but when wet it turns to gel and holds water. It reads on bag "cut your watering by 50%" I got me a bag and gonna try it too. Thanks for the video !!

      I live where it can get very hot. We have a product called Wettasoil which you mix with the soil. It is exactly the same product they put in nappies but dehydrated and just like nappies it holds moisture. We line the basket with plastic about 1/3 of the way up. Be careful not to drown the plant so you may need to put a small hole in the plastic if necessary. This is especially a good method if your plants are hung where it is windy.

    the material in baby diapers is fantastic - after soaking it in water and it becomes full, open and take out the material mixing it with soil - the plants will absorb the water only as they need it. There s a video on line as well; material is safe enough for infants.. etc.. thank you for your info.

I want to use this same material in a pot to go inside my hanging basket and disguised with a coco liner or sphagnum moss. The window boxes I speak of are a lightweight , thick resin material that holds in the moisture for my oxalis, wandering jew, and Swedish ivy perfectly.

    Thanks, Heather! The pads make so much sense! Can i ask how thick in inches you fill the new shell with the old coco fiber.? And rule of thumb for how high up the sides you go? . Then do you use the "wings" of the napkins to keep the water in the top half? I have long 36 inch frames... thanks for any help!!

    One of my daughters had used disposable diapers when her son was in them and it took up a lot of space in her hanging baskets. Gardners can buy the water absorbent beads and not buy expensive diapers or sanitary napkins. Some of us don't have such items around the house. I don't recall the exact name of the absorbent beads but they can be located with a quick google search. I'd recommend using vinegar or peroxide to clean the old pot liners to try and avoid spreading plant diseases, funguses, molds, rust, black spot and such. kinda like cleaning your garden tools for the same reasons. What brand of slow release fertilizer do you like for your baskets?

      I think they are called Crystal Bead or Water beads.

      The Dollar store is a good place to go for diapers and napkins. They're not very expensive and you get plenty to store for years to come. Those beads are usually too much effort to find and they are messier.

      Wettasoil is what I use. They are dry white beads that you mix in the soil.

      I was thinking diapers could work too. I do like adhesive back part of this solution. What is a Songes?

    Hi Jo-Ann, I just came across your video. First of all, thank you very much for sharing! Secondly, I would like to ask if it's possible to use cut-up pieces of an adult diaper as a possible alternative to the pads? (Whole diaper is way too big for 1 pot)
