    I have watched many videos and I think yours is by far the best. Super helpful and I am off now to the garden centre with my list. I have around 10 baskets to plant. I will definitely be back to let you know how it went. Thx again.

    Lovely. I am going to purchase larger hanging baskets this year. The smaller ones do not have enough soil in them to keep them going. Lovely arrangement and flowers.

      Totally, especially with peat free. It will take more watering and feeding these days. But it is good to look after the planet.

      Hi, if I did use a 12 inch hanging basket for a summer display do I use 3 trailing plants round the basket, upright in the middle and 3 uprights as the fillers?
      Loved watching this video, some really good advice, thank you x

    • @theflowerwriter
      @theflowerwriter Před 2 lety

      @@tinarichardson5107 yes that is exactly what I would do. However as the season goes on and if you are planting late May early June you might find that the plants in the garden centre have grown bigger so you might not need so many. Just go with the flow! They flowers always look gorgeous.

    Have you ever cut holes (small) and have plants trail out of the bottom. I would sew up the hole loosely to prevent soul seepage. I saw that on another video

    • @theflowerwriter
      @theflowerwriter Před 2 měsíci

      Yes I do that if it is for a pub or hotel where their baskets are often up high. Customers have a different view of the bottom of the basket so it means they can appreciate the flowers more. If you are going to do that though you need to make sure that the basket is big enough. I would recommend at least a 16" basket, otherwise there is not enough compost to sustain the flowers on top and the underplanting. I hope that helps.

    What about perlite for retaining water

  • @ciaratrotman4973

    Thanks for sharing. How do I start if I have a plastic basket?

    • @theflowerwriter
      @theflowerwriter Před 2 měsíci

      You just need to do the same. In some ways plastic baskets in summer are better because the water does not evaporate through the sides. However if you are in the UK you will be likely to be using peat free compost. I have made another video about how to use peat free. There is a risk in a container with no holes at the bottom that the water sits and creates a 'soggy bottom'! Follow my tips on how to check for that. If the base stays wet the roots will rot and the plants won't thrive. I hope this helps.

  • @LizEudy
    @LizEudy Před 5 měsíci +1

    That is a really beautiful basket. I am just learning, but how can flowers that crowded with so little soil grow? It seems like they would need some room for the roots to go somewhere.

    • @theflowerwriter
      @theflowerwriter Před 4 měsíci

      Good question. There is a bit of room for them to grow but they will only be growing for a few months over summer. Once they have grown into the space these 'summer bedding plants' will put all their energy into flowering prolifically. Then once there is a frost they will die (so there is no need for more space to grow).

    Awesome,, however Begonias do not like the sun,, as all the other varieties do. We have no luck with Begoniiias in the sun,, Ever. Thanks for the Great Video. here in 2021

    • @theflowerwriter
      @theflowerwriter Před 2 lety

      Yes, this is for a mixed basket. In the UK I have always found that they are OK in moderation. If you are planting in hot, bright sunny conditions I would suggest geraniums. They are the most forgiving. I have made a video all about a shade hanging basket and talk about using non-stop and illumination begonias there. Thank you very much for your comments. :-)

    Do you have any tips on how to control slugs ?

    • @theflowerwriter
      @theflowerwriter Před 2 měsíci

      Slugs have been a big problem this year in the UK because we have had a lot of rain and they love the damp. Hopefully they haven't managed to reach your hanging basket! I like environmentally friendly controls such as wool pellets or copper around your plants.

    • @theflowerwriter
      @theflowerwriter Před 2 lety

      Hi there! I think that most garden centres here in the UK stock this type of basket. To be honest, just plant in a basket that you like. It is your chance to choose what you like the look of. The most important thing is not to use one that is too small.
