I’m so glad you explained the watering mistakes, I am guilty of testing with the fingers . My petunias always end Iup browning underneath healthy foliage and within a week or so they start dying off.

      Hi Clive!
      Most HB are heavy feeders, so feed them constant with a low rate or at least a few times a week full strength. Calibrachoa really like to be fed a lot and if it gets to large, trim it back. It will not hurt it whatsoever. I'm glad you are learning from the channel and I thank you for watching too!

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Kevin!
      I don't know if people realize that they can "burn" or damage their plant roots if they use to strong a fertilizer rate to often or if they don't on occasion just clear water or flush the pot so the salts that do build up from fertilizers over time get washed out. That's very important! Kevin, thanks for watching and commenting as well!

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Gabby!
      How are things down under?
      The water draining to the sides happens a lot and I brought that up because I wasn't sure if people were aware of what was really happening with their baskets. Just remember, if the water flows through almost immediately, the peat is very, very dry and has shrunk from the sides of the basket creating a easy water channel for the water to flow to the bottom of the basket immediately. Peat when very dry almost repels water believe it or not, so you have to re-water 2 or 3 times to get the peat thoroughly wet again. Gabby, glad you got some ideas and there is another video coming out in the next week showing a lot of the combinations I did in my baskets, so possibly you may get some more ideas!
      Thanks Gabby!

    Great video, Mark! That 12” mixed basket is a great combination. My favorite! Do you know why hanging baskets themselves are no longer offered with a built in saucer on the bottom? That would help the water dependent plants out during summer. Cheers.

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  Před 3 lety +7

      Hey Scott!
      The saucerless baskets with the internal saucer came around several years ago. My guess is that it is cheaper to make in the molding process. I could be wrong, but it seems manufacturers are always looking for ways to save money. I always felt the bottom external saucer worked better though. That shade combination in the 12" HB is my favorite basket we grow. It holds up incredibly all summer. Scott, thanks for being a loyal supporter of mine! I appreciate you watching, commenting too! Stay cool down there in Georgia too!

    I like the idea of a weak feeding all the time Mark. That makes sense. Also our petunias here don't get really too big and we don't have to prune them.

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Dan!
      Some of the best petunias I have ever see are either on the west coast or in the very northeast states such as New York, Mass., Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine. They prefer lower humidity and very sunny conditions. Constant low feed works best with Petunias. They really are a heavy feeder. Thanks for watching/commenting!

Unfortunately here in Scotland, in the Central Belt, we are not necessarily always dry and sunny but do better with petunias that the wetter west coast of Scotland. Ours is a maritime climate because we're sounded by sea and sometimes a mountain climate similar I would imagine to the Pacific North West. I love the idea of a continuos gentle feed, it makes sense to always nurture those wee beasties! You have yoursel a good week, mate and don't work too hard, Dan

    Curious why Mandevilla in a hanging basket has become popular. They are upright growers - even climbers - and don't really cascade. Don't seem, to me, particularly suited to a hanging basket. Is this a different variety?

    Hey Mark, what liquid or water soluble fertilizers do you like to use? I live in an area where "hemp" growing was a mainstay of the economy many decades before it became legal, and walking up to the liquid fertilizer selection at any garden center is overwhelming. I try to grow only organic whether or not the plants are edible, by the way.

  • @dc0145a
    @dc0145a Před 3 lety +2

    I never have luck calibrachoa; they seem to 'peter out' mid summer. Petunias on the other hand; grow like gangsters. I have to give em a 'hair cut' mid summer. Good tip on the fertilizer; I'm one of the 'once a week' people. I'll try your method.

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey NH!
      That surprises me in NH because that is the perfect weather for Calibrachoa and Petunias. Both are heavy feeders and should perform very similar. If your Calibrachoa is in a hanging basket, always keep it in a 12". Most people have them in 10" hanging baskets and it's just not big enough as the plants get large and the same goes for Petunias as well. You can even go to a 14" hanging basket and save it from year to year. Buy a 10 inch at your local garden center each spring, come home and repot it in the 12" or 14" that you have saved from the year before and you will have a much nicer basket all summer long and into frost that you didn't have to pay the 12" or 14" price for.
