Shao Kahn had Kane like booking. Originally an unstoppable monster with powers like the Undertaker, who became enhancement to the stars, and then got “Katie Vicked.” Shortly after he lost his mask he was booked strongly but not to the extent of his original run and looses to top-tier talent such as amped Shang Tsung with the crown. At least he didn’t go through a Corporate Kane gimmick… yet.
Yeah. He's like Kane, if Triple H not only ruined him with the Katie Vick angle, but caused his 2003 Unmasking & basically stole his mask from him (since Triple H is basically Kratos with Shao Khan's skull mask when he's the "King of Kings").

I have to respectfully disagree. Shao Kahn fell off in MK 9. In the Midway era Kahn was shown to be an intelligent, patient man. It was his plan to revive Sindel in Earthrealm so he could legally invade, a back-up plan he'd been saving in case Plan A (win ten Mortal Kombats in a row) failed. In MK 9 he was still powerful but he was also turned into a dumb brute, with the plan to revive Sindel now being from Quan Chi. Not to mention him telling Kitana the truth about him killing her father for absolutely no reason. Aftermath was a big improvement but for Kahn to really return he needs to get back his cunning, intelligence and patience.

Heihachi is probably the only one on Kahn's level. Being the head of a global conglomerate (his own empire) and trained life long in martial arts to the point of fighting a literal devil to the death who couldn't even stop him despite being in his final form. Kazuya did kill him in human form but that says even more about Heihachi.
I'm a Heihachi fan, but honestly he has no chance to beat Shao Kahn. He can unload a can of whoop-ass on any number of normals or near-normals (about Johnny Cages and the likes). But against the more powerful MK figures like Shao Kahn, I only see him taking hit after hit and refusing to die for a while, and Kahn has an answer to that since he can steal souls. Heihachi can fight Kazuya out of his Final Devil form, but I think Shao Kahn is stronger than that.

Even before that, he was being bodied by some Shokan nobodies until his gold-digging THOT wife Twindel (fan's nickname for Evil Sindel, because nobody really believes NRS when they say Sindel was Evil All Along, because the kharacter bios & ladder endings from MK9 directly disprove this claim by NRS, although NRS doubled down on their stance regardless of fan backlash, because NRS loves fucking the fans over, apparently) saved him & used the Soul Chamber to restore him back to power. Even as he was clapping the good guys, he was still used as the simping trophy husband of Twindel, so Shao Khan was actually beneath Twindel in terms of rankings. In fact, if you play Twindel against Shao Khan, she even berates him for his faults & wonders if she made the right decision to side with him when he conquered Edenia.
Jesus, Aftermath was what I needed after he was washed in MK11. Hopefully the future games take the hint, give villains (who aren’t fucking D’vorrah!) their own chapters to give them some canonical wins. And not against other villains, let them beat the heroes a few times.

Yeah, I expect Shao Kahn to be a powerhouse, I expect the Kahn I saw from MK9 who survived a fist going through his chest, where Raiden had to go back in time and fuse with the Elder Gods, and even then barely pull the win. I can take Shang Tsung washing him because Shao actually came across as Kahn before that moment, so the sting was weakened. Shao losing to Kitana after a really embarrassing display leading up to that, was just the final nail in the coffin.
The power scaling of Mortal Kombat is tragic like Shao Kahn was really average in MK11 story like he beat Jerrod who's a king but Shao Kahn lost to his daughter like Kitana stronger than her father? Kitana couldn't beat her mother so Sindel stronger than Jerrod and Shao Kahn as well? The who can beat who is weird.
Remember, Sonya Blade is stronger than Jade and Kitana, but weaker than Johnny Cage. If you think the writers care about power scaling, you are out of your realm.
Alright so many people are bringing shao kahn absolutely destroying kitana in battle off the realms. In my opinion that's amazing and i really became fan of that shao kahn instead of this simp that says WIFE. Although battle of the realms shao Kahn is not the strongest villain he really nailed it with voice and I love that shao Kahn is smart.
Battle of the realms shao khan also has some good speed. Casually deflecting liu kangs fire beams with one hand behind him lol. Sad the fights were short.
Shao Kahn 2: Gets turned into a stone golem and proceeds to explode in multiple areas of time/space.... Comes back like nothing happened. Shao Kahn 3/Ult/Tril: Turns into green glowing energy, and proceeds to explode, warping reality back to normal in the process... Survives. Shao Kahn Armageddon: Gets his face/neck/chest eaten by Onaga, survives and proceeds to win the battle of Armageddon somehow. Shao Kahn 11: Takes one fan swipe to the face and keels over like Radditz. "Blegh"
I never see a fighting game where a iconic boss gets owned by some no count like Kitana and suffers the greatest humility in his career but takes one of his best victories and actually defeats one of the main characters like Liu Kang with ease. also it is friking shao khan 10/10 easily

Shao Kahn with the red armor and yellow sash outfit from the cinematic fight with Raiden in MK9 is the best version. Combine that look with the attitude and personality of the "Realms" Kahn and you would have his best form.
Him being playable isn't a downgrade. He was playable in UKM3, MK Trilogy, and a couple of the 3D era games (namely, Deception - as Onaga resurrected all of the fallen Kombatants - and Armageddon, where everyone from the franchise at the time was included, including both versions of Bi-Han [elder Sub Zero & Noob Saibot], as well as all bosses & sub-bosses being playable [the Shokan - Goro & Kitaro, as well as Sheeva - Motaro being nerfed from Centaur to Minotaur, the Oni duo of Molock & Drahmin, OG boss Shang Tsung, the definitive Emperor of Outworld Shao Khan, Fallen Elder God Shinnok & even The Dragon King, Onaga himself]). So that wasn't what ruined Shao Khan. Being made Sindel's simping bitch trophy husband was.

I'm not against Kitana killing Shao Kahn, but it should've been a combined effort of Jade, Baraka, Sheeva, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, each attacking him for what he has done to them. Though Shao Kahn being retconned in the aftermath dlc was very predictable and just screwed over the timeline even more, plus did Shao Kahn really come back, when he needed Sindel's and Shang Tsung's help to even accomplish anything? That and he gets washed instantly by Shang Tsung anyway, so either way he still ends up a loser....

Shao Kahn was a badass villain, Untill MK11 turned him into a WWE 'bad guy'. A cunning, Intelligent schemer that outsmarted his old master. He lost not because of his idiocy, But his Ego clouding his judgement. Now is a mere brute who can only punch untill he can get what he wants. Which he fails to do even that.

That isn't to say Bob Carter isn't bad (his VA for 9). He did have more menace, more dread in II and 3. Now 11... his voice got changed up again, pre-battle quotes made him look weak, and the story happened. Aftermath fixed him, but it was Battle of the Realms that put him back over for real.
Mk9 always felt like shao Kahns equivalent to what happend to Paul phoinex in tekken 3 and 4. Sure they weren't the worst showing for either character, and arguably had some of their best scenes, but they also started unfortunate precedent that for both characters that gets increased in later entries. For shao Kahn it's making him less intelligent(needlessly revealing kitana's past to her) and making him more vulnerable; needing quan chi's help to recover.
OG gets ten . The only being that can body Shao Kahn is Onaga ,we know about Liu Kang . If remember correctly the reason he looks like that is because he drained Onaga's soul🤔
I was disappointed at how they portrayed Shao Kahn in the main story of MK11, they made up for it in the Aftermath storyline giving him a chapter of his own (though it was a shared chapter with Sindel though I did it as Shao Kahn) having him defeating Kung Lao, Liu Kang and Kitana only to have Shang Tsung kill him and Sindel from behind. Shao Kahn should’ve grabbed Shang Tsung by the throat took Kronica’s crown and took his soul leaving him as a withered husk of a shell. Then the end fight which you should’ve had to choose from was Shao Kahn Vs Fire God Liu Kang
MK11 really screwed him and Aftermath managed to bring it back. I wish Kitana didn’t win, it makes 0 sense that he could lose to her. Plus side, he still looks and sounds like a badass regardless.
The only people I’d be okay with Shao Khan losing to 1on1 are Lui Kang, Raiden, Gods, Elder gods, Onaga. That’s about it. You never see Bison losing to jobbers.

Yeah, I expect Shao Kahn to be a powerhouse, I expect the Kahn I saw from MK9 who survived a fist going through his chest, where Raiden had to go back in time and fuse with the Elder Gods, and even then barely pull the win. I can take Shang Tsung washing him because Shao actually came across as Kahn before that moment, so the sting was weakened. Shao losing to Kitana after a really embarrassing display leading up to that, was just the final nail in the coffin.

The power scaling of Mortal Kombat is tragic like Shao Kahn was really average in MK11 story like he beat Jerrod who's a king but Shao Kahn lost to his daughter like Kitana stronger than her father? Kitana couldn't beat her mother so Sindel stronger than Jerrod and Shao Kahn as well? The who can beat who is weird.

Alright so many people are bringing shao kahn absolutely destroying kitana in battle off the realms. In my opinion that's amazing and i really became fan of that shao kahn instead of this simp that says WIFE. Although battle of the realms shao Kahn is not the strongest villain he really nailed it with voice and I love that shao Kahn is smart.
Battle of the realms shao khan also has some good speed. Casually deflecting liu kangs fire beams with one hand behind him lol.

Shao Kahn 3/Ult/Tril: Turns into green glowing energy, and proceeds to explode, warping reality back to normal in the process... Survives.
Shao Kahn Armageddon: Gets his face/neck/chest eaten by Onaga, survives and proceeds to win the battle of Armageddon somehow.
Shao Kahn 11: Takes one fan swipe to the face and keels over like Radditz. "Blegh"

I never see a fighting game where a iconic boss gets owned by some no count like Kitana and suffers the greatest humility in his career but takes one of his best victories and actually defeats one of the main characters like Liu Kang with ease.

The redemption, the way a story should be written
Shao Kahn with the red armor and yellow sash outfit from the cinematic fight with Raiden in MK9 is the best version. Combine that look with the attitude and personality of the "Realms" Kahn and you would have his best form.

He was playable in UKM3, MK Trilogy, and a couple of the 3D era games (namely, Deception - as Onaga resurrected all of the fallen Kombatants - and Armageddon, where everyone from the franchise at the time was included, including both versions of Bi-Han [elder Sub Zero & Noob Saibot], as well as all bosses & sub-bosses being playable [the Shokan - Goro & Kitaro, as well as Sheeva - Motaro being nerfed from Centaur to Minotaur, the Oni duo of Molock & Drahmin, OG boss Shang Tsung, the definitive Emperor of Outworld Shao Khan, Fallen Elder God Shinnok & even The Dragon King, Onaga himself]). So that wasn't what ruined Shao Khan. Being made Sindel's simping bitch trophy husband was.

You know what I'd like? It'll never happen, but I'd love an rpg about how Shao Kahn ascended to power. Just an rpg focused on the villain. They've done something like this before with Sub Zero in that Legends game.
I'm not against Kitana killing Shao Kahn, but it should've been a combined effort of Jade, Baraka, Sheeva, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, each attacking him for what he has done to them. Though Shao Kahn being retconned in the aftermath dlc was very predictable and just screwed over the timeline even more, plus did Shao Kahn really come back, when he needed Sindel's and Shang Tsung's help to even accomplish anything? That and he gets washed instantly by Shang Tsung anyway, so either way he still ends up a loser....

Where he Lost his original voice actor, that was it for him.
That isn't to say Bob Carter isn't bad (his VA for 9). He did have more menace, more dread in II and 3. Now 11... his voice got changed up again, pre-battle quotes made him look weak, and the story happened. Aftermath fixed him, but it was Battle of the Realms that put him back over for real.
I actually prefer Fred Tatasciore's Shao Kahn voice.

Mk9 always felt like shao Kahns equivalent to what happend to Paul phoinex in tekken 3 and 4. Sure they weren't the worst showing for either character, and arguably had some of their best scenes, but they also started unfortunate precedent that for both characters that gets increased in later entries. For shao Kahn it's making him less intelligent(needlessly revealing kitana's past to her) and making him more vulnerable; needing quan chi's help to recover.
Only issue I had with the aftermath DLC was sindel I hate what they did to her

I was disappointed at how they portrayed Shao Kahn in the main story of MK11, they made up for it in the Aftermath storyline giving him a chapter of his own (though it was a shared chapter with Sindel though I did it as Shao Kahn) having him defeating Kung Lao, Liu Kang and Kitana only to have Shang Tsung kill him and Sindel from behind. Shao Kahn should’ve grabbed Shang Tsung by the throat took Kronica’s crown and took his soul leaving him as a withered husk of a shell. Then the end fight which you should’ve had to choose from was Shao Kahn Vs Fire God Liu Kang

The only people I’d be okay with Shao Khan losing to 1on1 are Lui Kang, Raiden, Gods, Elder gods, Onaga. That’s about it. You never see Bison losing to jobbers.

The soul chamber healed shao Kahn because he absorbed the souls like shang tsung you can't forget shao is the reason why shang even knows most of his magic etc
