    We got married in June 21, it was a little bit hard to understand what a nulla osta is (I'm danish) , but finally we made it. It went totally fine with my comune, I live in a smaller city, maybe that is the case :)
    We also waited like 1 year after the proposal because my wife had to be Italian first (she's originally nigerian) = un po' di burocrazia in meno. then the pandemic came ... but finally we made it! Non è cambiato molto, gia convivevamo da 6 anni, eccetto che nowwe have a little 3 months old Sven Damilola with us
    tanti auguri a entrambi !!

    My husband didn’t propose either. We had a conversation as well. We wanted to make sure we were on the same page about where our relationship was going. We eloped and then had a big reception later when we had the money for it. I loved how we approached it and I would recommend everyone do it that way. lol

    Congratulations. I believe that's how it should be. Classy and simple.
    The US has made getting married such a chore with HUGE expectations on everyone.
    1)How big is the engagement ring, 2) then the wedding ring, 3) spending on bachelor and bachelorette parties, 4) endless gifts, 5) then the destination weddings, 6) the dresses for the bridesmaids and groomsmen...it's never about just celebrating an actual union of 2 people. It's all about making sure you replicate this process. Everyone gets dragged into fulfilling their "dream" and has to spend enormous amount of money to satisfy the desires of the bride and groom (mostly the bride). It is financially draining for a lot of people., and it shouldn't be. It should be a celebration of a happy moment that one wants to share with people they love. It shouldn't be a burden on other people.
    I have catered over 100 weddings and most of them are so over the top. People can't afford them and get in debt just for the wedding. What a way to start a new life together! They can't wait to count how much money they received for their wedding just to reimburse themselves for some of the expenses they just had...it's such a racket when you think about it. The bride and groom as so stressed they have to get shit faced just to enjoy their own wedding.
    I have also done weddings for the same people 2 times...if you get what I mean. You got to love the repeat customers. LOL. The best wedding I have gone to was the simplest one. They are happy and still together.
    I congratulate you and your future family. xx

      Im starting to see a trend of people having smaller weddings or eloping. My fiancé and I are having a small beach elopement ceremony this winter (10people) and are going to just host a dinner after. We would rather spend our money on a house and nice honeymoon instead. It’s all up to you and what you want to do. It’s your life ♥️ . The pressure only comes if you’re more worried about others outside of your relationship rather than each other

    Congratulations! I never knew anyone in Italy who did the "proposal". It is always like "You know, we should marry" "Oh, I think you are right". I don't even get all the American concept of "proposal". If I ask someone to marry me, and I do it in a public space, in front of a crowd, with music, balloons, pigeons and a whole choreography and the other says "no", how incredibly humiliating the whole experience is for both!?!

    • @mariabarnes9197
      @mariabarnes9197 Před 2 lety +10

      One way around that entire surprise proposal is to talk about it along the way-- do you want to marry, marry each other, when? What kind of proposals do you prefer... etc. Then timing & actual proposal venue, who else is present, or not, etc is the surprise.

    • @dianaperez6369
      @dianaperez6369 Před 2 lety +20

      Most couple I know already knew they wanted to get married. So the proposal is just a way to surprise the girl and make it special, sometimes it's not all out public it's done somewhere special alone or with others. Those that do it without discussing it first and agreeing and just plain careless and impulsive.

    • @Zaju
      @Zaju Před 2 lety +3

      @@dianaperez6369 thank you. I admit that everything I know about proposals comes from American movies and in them often things go completely wrong 😅. Still, the whole concept (in my opinion) reeks of sexism. It's always the man who does the proposal, so it's entirely his decision the "when". Like we are still in some kind of pre-industrial age and the man is the only who produces wealth in the house, so he is the one who decides when it's the best time to organize the weeding.

  • @ogrizzo
    @ogrizzo Před 2 lety +37

    First things first: congratulations!
    Getting married is quite easy, in Italy, if you get married where you were born with someone from the same town. If not, well…
    When I got married in 1997, since I was living at the US at the time, I had to go through the Italian consulate: of course they had very different ideas on the kind of documents I needed. I ended up bringing my future father-in-law cellular phone (in ‘97!) to my wife’s comune offices in order to have the local officer spend half an hour yelling and accusing the consular agent of not knowing the law (and vice versa) until they came to an agreement. And we were able to do that since the officer was on a first name basis with my mother-in-law.
    I cannot imagine how bad it is in a big city where you don’t know anyone in the town administration and with all the problems getting an appointment with COVID…

    Congratulations! By the way, I married in Italy with an italian guy from a different region, and that came with some burocratic difficulties, but nothing compared to the process of finding a priest available for the day we had planned.. it was surreal, we wanted to marry in the region of origin of my husband (in this way we could afford to offer the hotel to the part of the family that had to travel, which was my family that is smaller) , and no priest wanted to marry us because we weren't resident in the region.. luckily we found a kind one that accepted after we started begging.. one of the priest said to us:" saturday afternoon I go to the market to get groveries, I cannot marry you". Ooooook...

      Talk about the crisis of Catholic church concerning the lack of priestly vocations .... but as South American, I wouldn't feel I am engaging for life without getting married in a lovely ceremony in church in front of a catholic priest, without having my close loved ones surrounding me while wishing endless love and beautiful children, an engagement as important as life itself. Tradition is so strong and we expect this when we start looking for "Mr. Right".

I too, didn't want to have my wedding the same month as my birthday (March) but we had to if we didn't want to wait. My ceremony also became more then what I actually wanted it to be, but anyway I totally understand. However wasn't the day so magical even after all of the bureaucracy? Well it was for me :-)

    Ah, I forgot but I think you already know: in Italy there's a superstition about marrying or leaving for another destination on tuesday and friday, so I guess they cut the personnel on those days due to the low number of requests (but, actually, lots of people travel on friday and maybe they marry too)

  • @breatherepeat

    Congratulations!! Happy for you and Enrico. 😀 I admire your strength, courage, and perseverance. It's not an
    easy feat to get married over here. You did it! Cheering for you.
    I've lived in Italy with my Italian partner over 10 years now, and we have a 12 year old daughter. If we had gotten married, I could've applied for citizenship YEARS AGO, but since we're not married I've waited these 10 years of residency to even THINK about applying... 🤣Like do I even want citizenship at this point, and then to go through the Hell that you're going through?? The paperwork over here is PESANTE!!
    Don't even get me started on renewing the Permesso (I'm going through that now, and on top of it all I accidentally let my Permesso expire by 2 years LOL I truly didn't realize - the Police officer at the sportello side eyed me the whole time LOL then I had to get fingerprints in a backroom, thank goodness she was nice).... the Questura di Milano is a HOT MESS - even with an appointment, wait outside 1 hour (minimum), wait inside 4 hours, never enough seats (I stood for 3 hours), then after the window, come back in a month WHEN/IF they send you a text to let you know you can come pick it up. "distanza di sicurezza" non-existent. Everyone in there just turning blind eyes all around. 😩 Even my partner, who has lived in the Milan area for 20 years said the place needed help. And I can't get started with those "marco da bollos" Oh Lord help us!!! And how we stranieri are often treated, sometimes if I don't walk out I know I'm gonna end up in prison. 🤣
    I also noticed that when you mention wedding or baby to Italians - they make MIRACLES happen! 😆
    So happy for you and Enrico. Wishing you both a lifetime of laughter, good wine, and love. : )

    I work in a "town hall" in a small town in Lombardy and I must say that I ALWAYS try to help people, if they don't bring something we let them carry the "revenue stamp" or something else later. I think that in the bigger cities the employees lose contact with the people. I believe that working in "town hall" should be considered a public service, but I have to say that many of my colleagues do not feel the same way and act as if people should thank them just because they are doing the bare minimum in their job.

    It is so funny... how similar the situations for so many people are :) Do you think that the processes of/from both countries made marriage less romantic/fairytale? This is something I sortuve noticed is that due to having different nationalities (especially non-eu) the bureaucracy trumped the romanticism of marriage. Which is not necessarily a bad thing!

    • @misstiataylor_

      100% there were so many points where I was like “why are we actually doing this? Will it really make that much of a difference” 😅 also the dragged out nature of it gave us time to work on some final issues and humps that we def had to get on the same page on before being legal tied until death 😂 I didn’t feel like I was getting married until the second it happened so maybe it was better, even though this was hella stressful I can’t imagine how much more stressful it would have been had I been more financially and emotionally invested.. this was surprisingly the best way to do it for sure!

    The beni separati or comuni conversation is SO important! Also me any my boyfriend have had the marriage talk already and we are low-key organising it already even though we don't have a date nor we're officially engaged. But we're two adults who want to spend the rest of pur life together, we are comfortable with each other, so I don't see why we have to wait until "the proposal" to discuss where we would like getting married 😅
    I'm still hoplessy romantic and I'd love a traditional proposal, even if it's with an onion ring 🤣 but we already know what our intentions are with one another, and I think that is the most beautiful thing!
    Congratulations Tia, so happy for both of you!

    Similar story here! Lived together a couple years, bought a house and got married in oct 2020 during a pandemic 🤭 no proposal, we just mutually decided (but I got a ring tho 😜)! It’s kinda sad for me how women wait years and years for the man to be “ready”?! I mean, if it’s important to you just speak up and ask yourself 💪🏻
