    What about something like the Mines of Moria, or the Lonely Mountain?
    Balin's tomb has a shaft for moonlight, so they can and do get light from outside, and the Lonely Mountain has windows as well. Deep wells and lakes can serve as both food and water sources, and underground rivers can remove waste. Organic waste can be fed to pigs, and the dwarves keep flocks of mountain goats.
    Inside the caves themselves, lichens and other bizarre plants might be useful as fodder for animals. Yeast in caves can also be used for preparing food and alcohol, although the wheat and fruits/veggies would need to come from trade with the outside. A meat-and-milk based Mongolian-style diet would probably be a bit easier.

      How do you keep mountain goats underground, they eat plants. Where do get the massive amounts of hay for feeding this animals that will just be pooping in your underground building.

    Thanks to seeing underground facilities in video games and other media, I, too, have had thoughts about living or working underground. I always thought that being underground would suit me since I needed a break from the outside world and its judgmental shackles every now and then. I understand now that being underground is actually a mixed blessing and that I'd need some sunlight on several occasions even if I'm several feet below ground.

    I've been designing my own underground bunker. I thought about solar panels too, but those'll probably get stolen... I think geothermal would be too hard, so I decided to just go with nuclear, like in nuclear submarines. With that amount of power I could power sun lamps too. Although I'm not sure if sun lamps can replace the actual sun...

      With some of the talk of using surrogates to de-extinct species, I wonder, if you were really prepared, just how few animal species you could actually get away with keeping live in the early days when everything was limited. Could you put a tiger egg into a lion for example?

    If you had the money, prior to the "end of days", you could locate an underground waterline and create a pipeline connecting to it with a filtration system. This would also help because this would enable you to be able to create a mini-hydro power system. Also thinking of important foods to grow down there, you would very much want to grow quinoa because it has every vital amino acid that you need for a day :)

    That’s the one problem with this living underground permanently/indefinitely. You’re going to go crazy from lack of human contact, not to mention that if any problems arise in your underground home, you may be forced to leave.
    Also, you may have need of other resources eventually, so you’ll have to trade/barter with other people for other supplies.
    Also there’s the issue of personal hygiene, showering, bathing, soap, shampoo and other toiletries. That all hinges on having running water that will never run out, say the impossible happens and your underground home has no running water. What then?
    You may have a steady supply of food to last years and years, but without water you’re done for. Personally I have a survival bag I put together myself, if shit goes down, I’m going nomadic.

    • @Bogwedgle
      @Bogwedgle Pƙed 6 lety +3

      Yeah if you only had 57 gallons of water it Might last you half a year of significant dehydration without any kind of recycling system, but realistically it'll last you a bit over 100 days, depending on heat, exercise and how much you weigh.

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 Pƙed 6 lety

      agreed! well over double that, just for drinking, but your also going to get really sick if you can't wash at all!
      A properly structured hydroponic system should be able to clean the urine prettywell though, especially if you include stuff like spirulena in it or biological filters

    You can live forever udergroud you'll need just a lot of space:
    -for living:
    bedrooms,living room,pool, golf course,cinema (spending the most time),gym,scool,bathrooms, library, etc.
    - for sustaining-life:
    water tanks (with filtration sistems,geting water from soil),
    food ( storage area with a lot of long lasting food,and farm for growing vegetables end fruits,and for growing animals(not a lot)
    -for healthiness and sanitation etc:
    storage area for construction material (fixing and building things),area for production:
    toilet paper, clothes,etc.,
    area with tanks with gasoline, fuel
    for running generators or you can have nuclear reactors like submarines which is going to be protected area is going to be different section which is protected from blowing up and radiation,so room for generators,
    lab for making drugs (medication)
    and sanitation(for cleaning),
    area with lots of chemicals and medication,area for the plumbing system which is going to make water like in the space station and poop for farming, air filter filtration with oxygen tanks, it will have special lights which are gonna copy the Sun's function, server room with my favourite movies,series,music and if is still be emitted, satelite which can go on the surface and recive and transmit Communications and connect with satellites and have Internet or with just cable Internet until it stops working (multiple cables),room full of clothes,air systems( heating and Cooling),room full of seeds, fast growing mostly,
    safety area with a lot of guns armor everything,
    hospital ,you'll have also solar panels for solar energy and be connected with your bunker,
    have special safe room which is going to be protected by earthquakes,floods (bunker in bunker),
    I will

    You only need a UV lamp. No need for a sunroof. Also a sunroof would not exactly suffice because most glass blocks UVB light. The synthesis of Vitamin D only requires the use of the vitamins required to make choldesterol and UV light. I'm pretty sure just a tanning bed would be enough to make up for the lack of sunlight.

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 Pƙed 6 lety

      exactly! You could probably even get away with a basic reptile lamp, but 5 minutes a day with a tanning bed, or even small "facial tanner" would easily cover it. The depression's seperate though, but it's easily treated by spending time in the room with your plant growing lamps

    My bunker pipes in natural light via fibre-optic cables. I collect large areas of sunlight and focus them down a few cables and then use a solex agitator to distribute the light to where it is needed within my base. No space for horses, but the tilapia and trout hydroponics is working well.

  • @JacquelineBexecutivetrackers

    I've been stuck inside dealing with law stuff through a divorce and went outside for the first time in months yesterday, not even exposing myself to UV. The place I live in is dark and every time I turn the lights on my ex-husband turns them off (he is fanatical about saving energy and terrorizes me for buying things wrapped in plastic). I can tell you exactly the effects it has on you. It helps the skin. UV ages the skin terribly, but it also disinfects. It makes you ridiculously pale. It only causes depression if associated with isolation. The melatonin effect is actually an issue, as even though it is produced in the body more too much has the opposite effect, so it can cause insomnia. The most noticeable factor for me is difficulty adapting to light and oxygen or pollution. I have severe allergies I never had before and have been breaking out in hives. Heart problems are the most notable, and only wine helps. It also has negatively affected my EQ. I definitely don't recommend.

  • @MrAlRats
    @MrAlRats Pƙed 6 lety

    Yes, we can survive living underground indefinitely. Artificial lighting can replicate the solar spectrum. If the whole point of living underground is that nobody else is aware of your dwelling then obviously you can't rely on any equipment left above ground. Geothermal energy can be used to generate electricity and hot water. A water purification system can be used to recycle urine. Sewage and food waste can be turned to compost for indoor vertical farms and fish ponds. A large community of close friends and families or even a small village can live underground for the rest of their lives with just the technology available today. A well balanced diet of fresh fish, mushrooms, vegetables, fruits and nuts; along with an active lifestyle should reduce the need for pharmaceuticals. The isolation could eliminate the chance of infectious diseases.

  • @drfate7863
    @drfate7863 Pƙed 6 lety

    If you were forced to live underground, excrement would have to be recycled as fertilizer for plants while urine would have to be purified into water. Additional water would have to be obtained from the surface which is risky if the surface has been irradiated or if some plague has ravaged the surface. Sun rooms wouldn't be sustainable as glass is weak and could be prone to breakage or radiation leaking through. You'd have to rely on UV lighting. Energy could be obtained via thermal energy, solar energy would only be sustainable until the solar panels break, assuming a nuclear winter hasn't grasped the world making nuclear and thermal energy sources the only reliable sources of energy.
    Then there's sanity, the only way to stay sane underground is to have over 300 people with you and tons of space. Without a colony of people and large amounts of space with loads of fun activities, you'd quickly go mad from cabin fever and boredom. That being said, you'd need a self sustaining underground city.
