    • @georgealamat4964
      @georgealamat4964 Před 7 lety +9

      maplecoin well we can't just build these facilities 1 meter deep, and also we have to build them in places in which they do not have negative effects on the environment, for example deserts, but then there is only one problem yet to solve; underground water supply... our choices are limited but the dream of building underground is possible, as we can't house 10.5 billion people in the future on land, even if we colonise the solar system. So we need a global land evaluation organisation to make a big campaign to evaluate areas around the globe !

    • @dynamicworlds1
      @dynamicworlds1 Před 6 lety +3

      We can totally house 10.5 billion on land even just on this planet.
      The difficulty is the amount of food and other resources we'd need and the impact on the environment.
      Space isn't really as much of an issue as you'd think, especially if we condense more into cities rather than suburbia.

    I imagine open underground cities (rather than individual structures like we have at the moment, these cities would look something like the nether in minecraft but with buildings in them) would be built in the shape of valleys, with huge storm drains in the middle of them and the buildings situated into the higher walls, connected with bridges or possibly just canals, like in Venice. The core of the storm drain would be some sort of water purification facility-come-pumping station, cleaning up the water then sending it back to the city for public use.

    In the Dune universe, the entire planet of Ix is an underground society. They also are responsible for the construction of all interstellar spacecraft which they warp (fold-space) out of the underground factories since there aren't any openings large enough to fly them out. The surface of the planet is nearly all left to nature.

    That idea of making underground houses for farmers in the Midwest actually sounds great! I mean if no infrastructure is actually damage or minimally damaged but everyone is okay, I see that as a good thing to pursue and see how well we can do and technically speaking it would increase the land area that these people could use to farm; all they would have to really have is a porthole or some sort of doorway that leads to the underground.

Yes you will need to strengthen the cliff to combat erosion, but you can have some of the benefits of isolation and independence of weather. biggest con is that there aren't many places with big cliffs that would be suitable and are in locations where a new city would work.

    An option for food could be multiple plant tissue culture chambers. Here the plants, fruits and vegetables will be able to grow underground. Will cost alot of energy to be fair, but it's a viable option for food.
    Have you heard about the "lab-burger"? A hamburger grown with tissue culture technology, but it's really costly.

    I think the question isn't whether we can but whether it is more efficient to build down instead if up.

    I can see lots of advantages of living underground, we could plant stuff (food or forests) on the surface, the concrete area would be reduced reducing the area that absorbs light and turns it into heat, there are problems tough. As price, infrastructure, health, and waste.

    Depending on the city what I would do is put a law in place so that buildings above a certain size need a certain amount of the building to be underground. Such tall buildings are already gonna be in a urban center, further the underground section would be a good aspect to add additional foundation to the building with careful regulation of materials and could be a good location for various essential building services. Further with some cities with rather in-depth underground infrastructure it might be possible to connect buildings to said infrastructure with a additional secondary entrance the building residents can utilize.

    It would be a constant nightmare to me, not being able to see the sky... I'm not claustrophobic but damn.
    Anyway, did you make those animations yourself? Cause they're great!

    Funny how I suggested underground living as a solution for colonizing the Arctic and it was the next week's subject of matter. I think I actually did a fair job of describing how... Here let me just paste it here too: "Well, I think in these extreme conditions, underground settlements would make sense. Since the surface ground is always shifting thanks to frost, we could build at depths where it wouldn't matter anymore. Agriculture could be done using light bulbs made for that and we could even raise livestock in large heated caves by getting them to graze moss instead of grass, which I believe should be possible. Water could be pumped from phreatic zones or collected from the condensation on heating, if this society would judge good to heat their steets, which they should. Power could be provided one of 2 way: if you're in a volcanic zone, Geothermy, if you're not, a Nuclear Reactor. Transportation would have to be entirely electric based, to avoid contaminating the air and massive ventilation shafts would have to go back to the surface to pump air in and throw out contaminant gasses. It could work." Here.

    3:08 It's pronounced co-ax, short for coaxial, meaning an electric cable encased inside another electric cable so they both have the same axis.

    One advantage of underground living would be that we would need much less of earth's surface area for living and businesses such that it would free area for agriculture, wild nature and parks. Additionally it could help with traffic problems because we could then travel in three dimensions, much more destinations could for example be within a distance we would walk.

    In a place called Matera in Italy people lived underground in "Sassi" which means "stones." these were houses inside these stones, nowadays the Sassi di Matera is recognized by the UNESCO.
