Recently, information on a fairly minor derailment re-surfaced and the railfan who managed to catch the accident on camera was... blamed for causing it??

I feel like passenger train crews (especially commuter railroads) are WAY more friendly to rail fans.
That's honesty true. I've ridden on Amtrak a few times recently and most of the crew members were amazing and we're glad to see a train enthusiast onboard
This
I honestly have to agree passenger crews are way more friendly
New Jersey Transit crews are very nice people
@@nolantherailfan5048Yea, when I was a kid I rode amtrack once and the conductor came out to talk to me. Still one of my key memories in life.
When he said “well obviously a switch was flipped wrong” reminded me of the time this kid stole a bike and came back to where he stole it WHILE RIDING said bike 😂
It's worse than what happened in 2021 when the OG Sebastian DeYoung did the exact same thing but in a different state
@@bryanschlippjr4894 yeah 😭🙏💀
LMAOO that's wild
The switch, where he was seen on camera going over to, then walking away from, and setting up a tripod aimed directly at the totally coincidental disaster. They didn't see him in the act of hitting the switch though... but it's a complete coincidence, he just knew that someone was messing with it. if he isn't charged, i lose all hope, there's just no way.
If you gonna Do the crime never return to the scene
It’s really annoying I don’t understand why people cannot keep to themselves, like just don’t commit felonies…it’s really not that hard
It's the same thing I always think when I see the old episodes of To Catch A Predator. They caught one dude twice.
It's really easy not to commit felony crimes, but lots of people seem to fail hard at it, and for stupid reasons. Then, they document it on the internet and make themselves the obvious suspect. I hope this kid gets the help he needs to not be an attention wh0re. My grandfather retired from the A.T.&S.F. Railroad as a sheet metal worker. Rails are great to watch, but if you want to interact, they make special trains for that.

This is why innocent railfans get banned from certain spots because of this.
If you want to purposely derail a train, go to your model sets or Train Sim Games.
So because ... people who respond to these incidents don't either care, or know how to treat it with nuance?
IMO it sounds like those higher ups are to blame.
The idiot that caused it could have killed someone
I know, if that train was going any faster, it could’ve got the crew injured or killed
czcams.com/video/bqWAIlcdw4U/video.html
meanwhile you post shit like this?
Yeah go to derail valley bruh
A Foamer is pretty much a railfan hungry for views (Most of the time) and a Railfan is a person who wants to go out and just get some trains.
Some Foamers are Weird tbh, I would consider Myself a Railfan but I could also be Considered a Foamer tbh.
While I’m not in any way a dedicated fanatic for trains, since I’ve grown up on trains, I tend to stay away from ridiculous people who will do shit like this to just cause uproar within communities. The internet certainly has normalized bs like this and then some…
@@exempligratia101 So what is a foamer? Im as much of a railfan as the next guy. Have some cool photos from back in the day, mostly commuter rolling stock, museum (Strassboug) with GG1s, Ive played RR Tycoon II (still do on my XP machine). I was a busspotter too, with dozens of photo albums (before digital), and a few tens of thousands of bus pics on digital from all over the word. I loved buses as a kid, because they were the biggest things in the city, but I eventually ended up getting my CDL, and ended up working for a few bus companies, driving into NY. Heck, I even bought two classic buses (real ones).
But even when coming across something super rare, I dont think I ever got foaming at the mouth (is that where the term comes from?). I did plane spotting too, which led to me working on jets in the military.
But, railfans are nowhere near as weird as busfans. I always went out solo (or with my grandfather that was an engineer that worked on the design team for a bus maker, which I would end up buying..the two buses I mentioned). Most would ask me why? At least with trains, people know. With buses, you get the weirdest looks, and its all due to the weirdos that take photos or videos. I havent gone on any spotting trips in at least a decade. Closest thing is watching freight trains go by when Im in line at this hand car wash I go to. You are right next to the tracks, about 5 feet away. Its pretty cool.
Anywhoo. CZcams has been flooding me with "Foamer" content lately, and I think its just funny
As a railroader I feel bad for both sides. For my fellow railroaders (and myself) feeling like someone lineside could be a danger is a terrible thing and puts you on edge. And for railfans, you guys will get more grief from (understandably) concerned crews. One of our road switchers services a grain elevator right near a crossing. Whenever I work that I stay at the crossing to manually protect it and get the switch, while the conductor spots the cars. I often have railfans come up and ask me questions while I'm there, and I am always happy to answer. They have always been polite and not interrupted my work, only asking questions while I'm waiting for the next move. So I have had a very good experience with railfans, and can remain mostly positive. But I also understand why many railroaders don't like railfans.
On a side note. The talent in Photography of some railfans is incredible. When we had foreign power (BNSF 2926 iirc) leading that road switcher some of the shots I saw online taken from that crossing were fantastic.
Frankly, I think your commute to the job is more dangerous.
My friends who work the railroad industry said it's in the same family as police, construction, utilities, ect. If you don't want to be bothered by the general public go work in an office or factory that has limited access.
Why not just stay of the property and observe the no trespassing signs and quit putting yourself and myself and a whole town at risk for a photograph. When you place yourself between the gauge or right up next to it. You have absolutely no clue the problem that start to create when the engineer has to apply the brake unexpectedly .
I worked nearly 40 years in the railroad industry mostly in train service as a locomotive engineer. I never once had a problem with any railfans and consequently had no reason to "hate" them. There are always going to be a few "bad apples in the barrel" but most railfans or foamers are decent people. Oh yes, I myself still remain a railfan.
IMO the other problem with the "bad apples in a barrel" thing people use to justify generalizing groups when someone does bad is, with VERY rare exceptions, people are not like diseased fruit in a barrel. Those enjoying a hobby safely and legally don't become bad just because someone who also enjoys the hobby does something bad.
IMO it's perfectly reasonable to not just expect railfans to not do bad things, but also to expect people responmding to incidents like these to use their brains.
Wrong. The narrative is that you hate railfans because they derail trains. Get with it.
Railfan know to do three things
1. Scream at paint schemes
2. Derail trains
3. Rant and complain about any other form of transportation that isn't trains
cue in that meme: "all railfans born after 1993..." :P
The people that have a massive hatred for cars are so annoying
@@NoahDoane its frustrating for me cus cars are my second favourite, but people treat it as a binary issue, you either like public transport and hate the hell out of cars or you ride for cars so much you hate public transport, and i've seen both. like damn, cant believe i cant enjoy having a nice car as a hobby while supporting public transport simultaneously... at least to such people.
@@NoahDoane I don't hate cars i just hate fossil fuels effects on my lungs dude. I do like Dodge Challengers and love my favorite car ever the Buick Grand national GNX. As an old head engineer, I love giving horn shows and seeing the smiles on people’s faces. 😊
When I go railfanning two rules,
1.Don’t trespass (or if with permission with owner to go place at a good spot to record/photo)
2. Don’t even think about touching any equipment
If you get permission, it’s not trespassing, so still, don’t trespass.

CN engineer on the iron range threw me a bracelet the other day that was pretty cool it's a shame people are doing stuff like this as most crews train or MOW I've talked to have been pretty nice
it's always BNFS foamers
Don’t Know Why is Always BNSF that gets the worst foamers
I had a hernia repair when I was 1. My father felt bad about it and took me to see a switch engine at a local yard when I was 14 months old. The engineer invited us into the cab. He put me on his lap and my hand on the throttle. He pushed my hand forward and I got to see it move down the tracks from inside. Awesome childhood memories.
The fact this guy risked that lives of all the crew onboard this train is baffling and sickening. This stuff cannot, must not and will not be tolerated. People like him are what gives us railfans a really REALLY bad impression to these railroad's. And it has to stop before someones life is lost to this!
There is a difference between a rail fan and a foamer .a foamers already has the answers he won't ask questions he will tell you how you should do it a rail fan will.talk to you and ask you why . now that's tolerable you get up next to the track Sith your tripod and put yourself at risk my crew and your town at risk then its time to get off the property A rail fan is genuine and ask questions a foamers will ask the same question and argue with you even if you told him you got the answer to his question right. When he tells me about the horn and whistle I will listen. As long as they both work has always been our concern . if we need to know about the tonage ptofile over a certain section track we use a time table. It don't give much detail about the horn . Now the rulebook governs the use of the horn it won't tell much about the type it is though .
How in the hell did this kid get a switch key, who in the hell made a switch key available to the public.
It wasn't locked
Pretty sure blueprints for that sort of thing are listed in patent paperwork, from that point all you need is a buddy with a metal shop
i mean... it could have made its way thru dubious means, or sold somewhere, or found something similar... cus my dad has a multifunctional key that can help open up the landing doors on old elevators in Romania (and probably other European countries)... they're very simple to find online or in hardware stores (but im sure the original purpose isnt for that)...

Here in the Netherlands, most railroad employees are nice, because the Dutch railways are fully fenced and are at railroadcrossings secured with camera's so this wont happen, and all switches are automatic, so that those are mobile controlled, so that's why this can't happen in the Netherlands

I haven't heard this rumor that railroads hate rail fans.
They don't like people on the right-of-way, but railfans are more sophisticated than that.
And completely understandable, as trains are very dangerous to people in their way, especially unauthorized personnel.
Yeah because it's private property. so no we definitely don't like it
He should be put on a government watch list.
Railfanning should be like fishing. You go out to relax make a catch or two and try to disturb the environment the least that you can Not dynamite the damn lake to make a guaranteed catch.
I've been railfaning for better than 20 years. Lately around my area the Railroad has been putting up fences and gates to keep people out. I pride myself in being a very courteous and especially safe railfan. I've seen the destruction (cows and horses) that can happen if something goes wrong. I stay off of rail property where it's posted. Otherwise I won't ever linger any closer than about 20' (6 meters) from the tracks. I far more prefer something like 30'. If I must cross a track other than at a grade crossing, I approach, look both ways and cross at a 90 degree angle and quickly get clear (not too fast because walking on ballast sucks :). FWIW I have had newer Next Gen power on a gentle straight downgrade actually sneak up on me while asleep in my car (20'+ away). I also don't bother train crews while they're are doing their job. I stay well out of their way. I'll be friendly of course but basically leave them alone. If asked to move (almost never), I will do so immediately, with a smile :).
I often see idiots right near the tracks and know that train driver is cussing up a storm in the cab. Sadly, stupid people and hooligans are slowly destroying what has been a great pastime.
This guy makes Jack Dowerty look like a great person.
Been railfanning myself years.. I have 9 different spots I sit at in my conversion van. I never trespass on RR land. I don't touch RR property. I don't interfere with the train in any way. I watch trains, wave at the crew and enjoy my time.
They should make him pay for all the damage including the repair of the locomotives and the cars
Oh, I’d be surprised if they didn’t
I know when I go railfanning, I'm always watching for the bad element, I like and enjoy trains, I don't ever want something bad to happen
He is old enough should be charged with domestic terrorism
this is the worst thing a railfan can do! the driver could have been injured and if the train was going faster it could have much worse! I think the driver handled it pretty well.
There's a reason why I have a healthy respect for the railroad crews, they work with heavy equipment and the train can't stop on a dime. Never mess with the set of points/switches or trespass to get views, it only ends in tragedy. It's people that you mentioned in the video that give railfans a bad rap.
this is not really good for the railfans now cops are going to be really strict to make sure we don't derail the train
You can literally get more views by scaring a cat than derailing a train
Oh no, now all the cats have to be wary of humans with a camera and a cucumber
Or just a video of a cute sleeping dog, you don't even have to scare anyone
Being Kris Tyson can get you far more views too
Hi The Winnipeg Railfan & it's Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks The Winnipeg Railfan & Friends Randy
I am tired of people crying about how the sky is falling with the hobby. Railroads can distinguish between people railfanning and some dipshit kid derailing a train. Most railroaders are railfans or are closet buffs themselves, and so are plenty of the railroad executives. 99.99% of the time railfans are helpful, calling in obstructions on the tracks, or stuff like sticking brakes. One of the railroads I worked at, railfans often gave us rides when we had to kick out cars US Customs rejected, which otherwise would have meant walking a 10,000 ft train multiple times and taking hours. Saying that railfans can't repair the damage is BS, just don't derail shit or do stupid stuff around the tracks, thats all it takes.
Everyone is wound up over this story, but no one ever talks about how railfans were first on the scene to the derailment CPKC had in Brassua last spring. If it wasn't for two guys who wished to remain anonymous hearing the distress call and hiking in several miles to the spot, the crew might have burned to death in the lead unit. Another group of railfans who were out heard the emergency call and went in as well, driving through deep snow on 5 miles unplowed logging roads to assist the other two in evacuating the crew out to a plowed road, to be treated for injuries by EMTs. Luckily the only injuries were a broken finger and glass cuts, but had those railfans not been there that derailment could have very well turned deadly. Even after they got the crew out, I believe they helped local firefighters haul gear into the remote site to battle the fire. I believe they were later tracked down and were supposed to be recognized for their acts. I am not sure if they got the commendation they deserved for that, since about that time CPKC fired its leadership in the area for not running flood patrols, causing two nearly deadly derailments a few months apart.
i’ve gotten a wave from 2 CN conductors
I've gotten waves from a lot of cpkc conductors/engineers. I live next to the Davenport sub so yeah they're a friendly bunch.
Keep waffling, it for some reason entertaining.
I actually have come across some of people who were vandalizing a tanker in broad daylight. I also have heard that someone stole a train horn from a locomotive and then the railroad has since been reporting every single rail fan
My guess is the kid wanted to do a something like a Tiktok and do something really bad to get the views. What scares me is copy cats and if this happens with a passenger train then god forbid its gonna get worse.
Funny story, I almost get in alot of trouble for sitting in a parking lot with my camera taking pictures of trains, like the tracks were right infront of me. Apparently someone thought I was acting weird? So there reported me and a cop came and threatened to take me to jail for just taking pictures of trains. I wasn't doing anything illegal just taking pics of trains.
unfourtunately i experienced the same in Eastern Europe... three years ago some guy "claiming" to be a security guard (no credentials or anyfin) said i wasnt allowed to film at the station and went and asked the stationmaster who suddenly said "no" even if he agreed once i arrived and then demanded to speak to my dad and 1V1 him later, and also harassed a guy taking pics of the sunset as if that wasnt enough... some people are hyper-paranoid. oh and during all this time a train loaded with scrap metal was sitting right next to me, and im sure he was meant to guard that from potential thieves, but no, me and a guy photographing the sunset were the problem... 🙄

It puts a bad taste in railroaders mouth about railfanning in general and makes innocent railfanners look bad too. I make sure I'm following the law and maintain safe distances from trains If I feel in danger or think I'm too close I'll just place the tripod at a safe distance and then walk away so that if something happens and the train derails no one will be hurt. I would never do these stupid things like that when I am doing my railfanning, that’s why I stand on the train platform when i’m railfanning
They need to understand the difference between a railfan and a menace. A menace is willing to be a criminal in order to get views. A railfan respects the working environment of the railroad and records safely. This happens with any fandom. There are bad actors and good actors. I think the people working the railroad should understand the difference, even if it IS reasonable to be cautious.
One of my first times rail fanning in my new town a local crew right off the bat had knew about my youtube channel. I had a good little chat with the conductor on that train.
As a CZcamsr I can say I have never experienced this and that I am very friendly to the crew
It is what it is, but my thoughts of the rail road was always "you don't fuck with the railroad."
It is possible he didn’t do it but it doesn’t look good…..
Yeah, very well could have been someone else, perhaps a classmate or something who was able to get a switch key (i.e, the person responsible has a parent who works for the railroad)
I genuinely hope that kid isn’t guilty because, as you said, this could really strain the already fragile relationship we have with railroaders. How much more would it take to almost break that trust completely? Not only that, but this kid is young, and having those charges stick would really hurt his future, nobody would want to hire someone who committed a felony like that. We still don’t know for sure that he did anything though, it still could’ve been a huge coincidence or possibly somehow the real person had the same kind of car. The problem with pointing fingers right now is that there’s just still too little info to go off of. If he is guilty though, he will deserve all that’s coming to him. But once again, I’ll wait for the official report. It’s awful if he did however, and I hope that poor crew heals from their injuries well and fast.
That's not a railfan it is a railhater...
in cases like this more often than not a 17 year old will get tried as an adult, he might even turn 18 if the courts moves slow enough
I've been a railfan all my life and i've worked for a railroad. I can say from experience that some rail employees don't like railfans working for railroads, and some don't mind as long as said railfan can do their job. As a rail employee there were a couple derailements that happend when I was on the crew and its not something that you want to, as a crewmember, want to have happen. For the most part (in my experience) they always look at the railcrew first to see if they were at fault. Now, as a railfan, i've NEVER tampered with equipment or property and have stayed a safe distance back.
Look I like trains but if wanted to derail a train i got my model trains at home I can purposely derail if I wanted to. Way to ruin your life kid.
There was a derailment in my hometown back in 1984. All because of a group of teenagers were messing around with the switch for the fun of it. That caused the train to derail and a major mess. That interrupted the motorists and public buses and had to take a long detour until the mess was cleared.
It's not funny at all.
Have a nice day/night.
If this is not a federal offense, I don't know what is? There is the possibility of him being tried as an adult.
We should ABSOLUTELY make a big deal of this, in order to communicate that this community IS NOT OK with this sort of behavior
good to see thats already kinda happened
I’m a railroader rail fans don’t bother me just that one rail fan I does have issue with because of what he did and he also did it to company I work for👊🏼👊🏼
I’ve been around for six years so I do not think that anything is wrong with a real fan you may think there’s something wrong but I don’t seriously do you want to get your head examined.
I miss the old days of railfanning really much 😢😢😢.
