Shortly before she passed I had a chat with Yvonne Craig(bat girl). I thanked her for being part of a show that brought so much happiness into our home. I mentioned something about how todays actors were making huge money compared to her generation(i.e. Friends cast at 1 million an episode) She replied she only did 14 episodes on Batman and she had so much fun doing it she would have done it for free. Fun fact: Alfred the butler.... his grandson played Chris on the partridge family

The producers probably thought everybody else in the cast were experienced actors and Ward was a young, green performer who was lucky to be there. Ward was basically ripped off. Great video!!! Burt Ward's salary is no surprise as he had zero acting experience prior to the show. In other words, he had no agent when he made the initial deal. I have heard him talk about this in various interviews throughout the years with the gist being he was a kid who could not believe his great luck and never questioned anything he was asked to sign or do, leading to multiple physical injuries from doing his own stunts. I would attribute the small differences in cast salaries to agent performance. The guest star salaries make sense because their deal is a one and done. Maybe there will be a return performance, maybe not. No guaranteed work means a higher price for a short bit of work plus the marketing the guests did for the show during its original run.

TV actors pay in the 1950's and 60s were based on many factors, such as their agents standing in Hollywood, their reputation with the studio, and simply how much time had passed since their last acting job. The star of the weekly series made more than even more popular guest stars as a matter of course to keep salaries consistent and prevented the need for constant negotiations over appearance money. I think the reason why Burt Ward made less than Aunt Harriet and others is because of the main cast, Ward had the least amount of television experience! The other cast members can be seen in other television shows as well as theatrical movies that were made before Batman premiered! I've yet to see anything with Ward prior to the show's launch!

What this doesn't tell us when during the run of the show the performers were paid those amounts.
This sounds like starting salary levels. After the first season, salaries could be renegotiated. A
producer wouldn't dare mess with a winning formula.
I forgot that Batman initially was shown twice a week (once a week in its final season).

  • @oliverortiz8507

Burt Ward's salary is a bit surprising but the producers most likely saw him as a young unknown actor who they could pay the salary that you stated in this video. I would expect that he hopefully received a salary bump in the preceding seasons.

As shocking as Burt Ward's pay was, I'm also shocked by Neil Hamilton's pay. He was actually a major star at one time. He was a leading man in silent films, and also early talkies MGM. By this time he was a character actor, of course, but a very good one. His super-serious tongue-in-cheek style on the show was key to the humor. He really understood what Dozier and Semple were looking for.

I heard he disliked Stafford Rep's Chief O'Hara voice, he didn't take to the strong Irish accent apparently. Which wasn't even Rep's actual real voice. Man these actors were into their characters so much!

It sounds like peanuts to us now, be we have to remember back in those days television really didn't pay very well. It was still considered second fiddle to the movies and most of these actors were probably thrilled to have the work.

I see a lot of people asking about residuals. Back then, residuals only went on for about 3 years or for about 3 reruns of the show. I know that the cast of Gilligan's Island got residuals for about 3 years or so. Too bad they didn't have "endless" residuals because they'd have owned Hollywood! I remember Jean Vander Pyl (everyone's favorite Wilma on "The Flintstones") saying that had they gotten residuals for years and years that she'd have owned Rodeo Drive or something similar to that comment.

Jim Kirk got $5000 per episode of Star Trek , he was broke after the show was cancelled, lived in a trailer . Terrible sense of investigating. Jimi Hendrix was one of the highest paid Guitarists , about $75.... 125,000 per 90 minute show . Unfortunately his managers were taking his money.

  • @outsider238

Definitely think Burt Ward got ripped off. But these kinds of things did happen on those shows back then. I learned a couple years ago that Bob May, the man inside the Robot from Lost In Space only made $200 an episode and yet the Robot became the star of the show (along with Jonathan Harris). It is believed this was because he was not being seen in the Robot costume and either was afraid to ask for more money (because he could easily be replaced) or he just didn't have that great of an agent. The adult cast members were making around $1,300 per episode. Not sure about the kids. Jonathan Harris was the only one smart enough to negotiate a deal to make money on further showings or video releases of the show.

The underpayments could be due to the fact that Batman was expensive to make with the sets etc. Also Fox was recovering from the near bankruptcy of making Cleopatra.

  • @mpucoder
    @mpucoder Před 4 lety +1

Actually makes sense to me. The star of the show is hard to replace, so keep him happy. The guest villains were all established actors, so name recognition. And, of course, pay is negotiated, so a lot depends on the agent. Did these amounts remain for the entire run of the show? Usually if a series is doing well in ratings actors ask for more to stay on. (and sometimes that kills a show)

    Het Rick,
It's interesting that Burt Ward got paid such a low amount per episode, especially as he made up half of the 'Dynamic Duo' as Robin. It's probably due to his young age that Burt was paid so poorly. Let's hope he got residuals, too, so he gets some payment for later screenings!

Burt Ward , although was a star of Batman he was also a new comer to acting. He took the job of Robin to pay the bills and the exposure would hopefully open doors to other acting jobs. Fox was cheap, the company held Burt back using his contract from taking other jobs outside of Batman. This manuver cost Burt Ward an audition for The Graduate, a movie that jumped started the career of Dustin Hoffman.

My guess as to why him Robin got paid less than some of the other characters is I have the sneaking suspicion that maybe this was one of the actors first real acting gigs so they knew they could get away with paying him less because he had less experience and he didn’t know any better so maybe that’s how come they payed him less

Union scale had a certain amount to do with it. And THAT is a two way street. Burt Reynolds had to take the million or so (whatever scale was for top billing in a movie) to do "Smokey and the Bandit" even though it was his buddy's film.

And the other thing was they always leave us hanging, to catch the continue Story, Saying Same Bat time" Same " Bat Channel" I'd don't know if that makes sense, but when the show peaked, later you catch it daily....but they long retired, thanks for sharing, the Batmobile probably Worth more than the Show.🏆🏆🏆
