I would be most grateful if the Government of Ghana would clearly define who real foreigners are from who Our family in the Diaspora trying to return home are. I am a bit disturbed when they refer to Diasporans as foreigners when we all understand what happened and why. I am so glad the year of return was launched in Ghana and I think I would be more grateful if diasporans are not seen as foreigners but as one of our very own kind coming back home. I also believe a lot should be done to properly help diasporans integrate smoothly into society.
The constitution of Ghana says once one of your parents is a Ghanaian, you are also Ghanaian whether you were born in Ghana or not. Just apply for a Ghanaian passport
@GEORGE MENSAH-AFFUL Appreciate that... but we are foreigners. Just as a person born here who has schooled abroad may also be considered a foreigner. We talk different, look different, dress different... and prioritize different. That's okay. I hope you sense from these two guys that we are welcome! Even if we are foreign born or raised abroad. They were, as most Ghanaians, most inviting, helpful and supportive!
Additionally, there is a part of the government for Diasporian Affairs as well as a part of the Tourism board here in Ghana. They are doing their best to help integrate and support and have ALWAYS treated us as family and welcomed us back home.
This is why integration is so important, we have people coming in saying yeah we're African too, but have a totally different mindset with a, them and us attitude. Can't have it both ways. The people will accept you but will you accept them as they are?
@@ExpatLifeGhana thankyou! 🙌🏾
Hey I was wondering if our people were to come visit or stay can you please do a video on different organizations that's welcoming to the repat's to better help them intermingle with elders. I guess for me and my wife spiritual minded people. Yes look upon your people with guidance & information
You guys are organized and very informative. In your future, I see your own TV show where you give valuable information that bridges the gap between the US and Africa as a whole. One country at a time!
Aww... @Capstone 107 - Wouldn't that be something! Thanks for the love ❤️️!
That’s a really great idea! Integrate the whole family into the series.
To the person who is reading this, don't give up on your CZcams channel. Keep going it's going to get better. ❤️❤️❤️
Ghana is beautiful
You've got that right @apa papabi apa! Thanks for commenting ❤️️🇬🇭❤️️!
Consider doing your next episode with the GIPC (Ghana Investment Promotion Center) to ask them which sectors of investment they encourage. There are some sectors that the government has subsidies and tax-free incentives for. That conversation would be great for those wondering where to invest in. Looking forward to that episode if you do it.
Love your channel!
@Edem Adukonu -We will look into that and thanks for the comment 😊!
Thank you all for your videos. My wife says Tony reminds me of myself and I say the same about both misses. Keep it up and we will see you guys soon along with some mattresses. I'll bring a small box of grits when I visit in January. Much Love Guys!

Greetings Expat Life Ghana, I think that your decision to not ship household goods was an excellent idea. Ayo, you are a real inspiration to your family and to your subscribers and Tony is a real gentle gentleman. Note that the sound quality was degraded in this video. Thank you for sharing this very important information as its really needed throughout the diaspora. Continued best wishes to you all in Ghana.
@Nefertem Ur - We acknowledge our audio issues, sorry. Appreciate the kind words and thanks for the comment 😊!
P🙏ease Be Ware ... We shipped a container to Ghana, and in the process of getting the container released you must allow them excess to view all the contents before releasing it ..... And we quickly learned, in order to expedite the process, we had to grease a few plams. And that nightmer didn't stop there, I can't express the mental devastation we still have when noticing items that we know were surely packed, missing until this day. P🙏ease Just be ware... !!!
Another fantastic and eye opening interview. By Ghanaian law retail trade is solely reserved for indigenes. This is a massive issue between Ghanaian and Nigerian traders. Foreigners are allowed in the wholesale trade though. Thanks for the education
Thanks for that information - we are learning as we go and sharing info... that tidbit helps @R Kyei-Gyau - thanks for the comment 😊!
So if I want to open my cosmetics store then I have to partner with a Ghanaian? I’m looking for locations with a realtor now and that was never mentioned.
@@ashleighmichelemcgill117 That's correct. But there are ways around it or caveats so to speak. That's why it's always advisable to use consulting companies or state institutions for advice.
@@ashleighmichelemcgill117 Also, contact the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President and don’t hesitate to ask for tips concerning whatever you want to do; they are there to guide you to avoid all the blind spots that could hurt you.
The policy on protecting retail trade for Ghanaians only is because that’s the one sure way that has proven effective for the unskilled low income people to make a decent living while securing the future of their kids. The protection ensures that Ghana works for both the rich and the poor; no bad blood.
OK anybody in the Facebook group going to Ghana should bring Tony some grits
@Kimberly Mensah -Kimberly you are going hard on getting me some grits here! Appreciate it and thanks for the comment 😊!
Thanks for this interview: As a first time shipper from the States to Ghana, I was quite nervous. But Ekow and his team at Walblue Transport cleared my shipping container (which included a vehicle) at the Tema port with no hassle and delivered to my home intact. They're easy to work with. They know their job, very transparent and honest, too. I had rest of mind during the process. I do highly recommend them for your your shipping needs. Cheers to this youtube!
@World Citizen - I spoke with Ekow today and shared your happiness in doing business with him and thanks for the comment 😊!
End to End Shipping is the best..I have had stuff picked up from my home in California and dropped off to my home in Afienya, without any hitch by the shippers, who are a Ghanaian company here .. Good advice
Great comment - Thanks for adding to the conversation ❤️️💛💚!
Hey my favorite XPat couple. Thanks so much for the knowledge.

@Fred -A quick tip on bringing your pillows is to put them in vac-seal bags to deflate the size of them for space conservation and thanks for the comment 😊!

Not everything is there...I'm a musician so I ship a lot of equipment and supplies etc. you could've saved the grits....a trick I learned from Ghana spread it out on a clean surface (tarp etc.) in the sun and the ants will clear out within a few minutes...
@Ahveekhy Ben BinahYah. YES! If you have specific items from a specialty store (like a music store) those can be hard to find. But general home goods... are everywhere. Great trick on the grits! Thanks for that
Am a musician also and plumber and planning to move to Ghana in April 2021 are you from Ghana?
@@cecilstormysmith5650 No but been experiencing Ghana since 1996, lived there from 1997-2007 with my Ghanaian wife and our children. From 2007 till now been going back and forth intermittently....now will be spending more time in Ghana as a resident...keeping my USA options open for business etc.
We have a restaurant here in Elmina that sell grits lol. I’ve had my fair share since I’ve been here.

Another AMAZING & very informative video. Thank you!
The Roro shipment is mainly done for large trucks like tractor trailers and heavy equipment. Cars and SUVs are best shipped in containers for security.
My suggestion to my American brother is, being American with contacts in the USA why don't you set up a consulting company in Ghana to engage with Americans who want to do business in Ghana? Note that you can do wholesale business in Ghana without restrictions
Interesting idea @Kwaku Akonto
Thank you for this information! Yah bless you, family.
You guys are so funny and helpful. Thanks!
Love you all’s videos! A Jeep Wrangler would be great out the but the prices we’ve seen in Ghana are astronomical so I think we definitely need to ship that car.
@Ashleigh Michele McGill - Dodge has a partnership with car dealerships here now. We did see the price of a jeep new and it's costly to say the least. There are some very nice all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive vehicles here if you want to buy Ghanaian to support locals. We purchased a 4 wheel drive vehicle but I don't really see me having to really use it and thanks for the comment 😊!
This was very helpful information. Thanks Tony and Ayo.

Hey guys see you’re still at it. Spent 3 years in South Africa. It’s not the big things you miss but the small things. Like home style barbecue sauce, never ever saw a TV dinner. No kool aid if you drink it. No mozzarella cheese on the pizza and very light tomato sauce. The key to doing business in Africa is Technology. Don’t look at what they are doing but what they are not doing. Stay away from retail unless you can compete with the Chinese and it infringes on some of the locals way of life. Be a supplier to them if you can plenty of stuff on Amazon to buy and sell minus duty. You’re from Texas when is the last time you had a good brisket? You can cook you a good Texas brisket with some of grandma’s 3 cheese Mac and cheese with some turnip.collards, and mustard greens good luck finding them with some baked beans with brown sugar, cinnamon, a little butter with hamburger and bacon bits or maybe pineapple and mix it with some African dishes and have African soul food American style restaurant.Target the tourists people see what they like.
Great points @Edward Greer and totally agree about the retail space.
In other news, we've found decent pizza and TV dinners are homemade (jollof and chicken or peanut stew) are on a tray... so we aren't missing those. AND Tony put his foot in some shrimp creole the other day with the help of our stash of seasoning. I do miss Blue Bell ice cream 😉.
Investing in things that target expats and tourists is a great way to go - great advice!

Yay @Mrs.Graceful Edwards! We are glad this was helpful 😊! See you in Ghana soon ❤️️! We will continue to answer questions that we can.
Just to clarify- the 'bigger is better' mentality is more a US one, it's not really here in Europe. Fridges, cars, are smaller here too because we don't need huge fridges as we shop more often and food is fresher (similar to Africa) and fridges are not status symbols here. Cars are also generally smaller too for better fuel efficiency and we care about emissions...and they're better built :P

Yes, yes, yes!!! @Tiffany Jackson you gotta talk him into it. You won't regret it 😉
This is a very interesting and helpful conversation. You guys were brave to come with only suitcases and carryons. We did ship the things we would not find easily and affordable here in Ghana. We have been planning our move for a long time and shipping door to door via Ghanaian shippers in the U.S. was and is the way to go. In most states just find out where the African market or Ghanaian market is and through them you will find a reliable shipper doing door to door.
Shipping a car is really a hustle so yes buy it in Ghana if you can. Tony, have you checked Shoprite or Game to see if you can find grits? Although there is the Ghana version if you ever run out and are desperate. Also if I find grits, I will get some for you.
Get a mattress topper through Amazon and if the seller ships internationally it will be delivered to your home address in Tema. We just had a plumbing snake equipment bought on Amazon and shipped through DHL, delivered to our address and it took just about a week. Shipping cost us 60 dollars as the item was not very heavy but it is so worth it since immediate problem solved easily and long term savings is great.
You can get many electrical appliances in Ghana but the quality ones are expensive. Have you heard of 220 Volt? Is a company that supplies diplomats and service men country specific voltage items from the U.S. We were blessed they have a brick and mortar store in our state so we bought all are 220 appliances from them. Good brands that you know and trust at more affordable prices. Our shipper even picks up items at their Metro DC location and ship to our home. Check the 220 Volt store out?
Please don’t buy used foreign mattress. Also just for your comfort buy a bed and mattress and have it shipped to you. We are enjoying our shipped bed and comfortable mattress.
I am enjoying your videos. We got here about 2 weeks after you did. We are settled in and enjoying Ghana even the bumpy roads and go slow traffic.
Be careful with business partners. Do your due diligence. When you find a good and right fit partner it works otherwise you will lose your hard earned money in a heartbeat.
Enjoy Ghana!
@Pram Accra - Great advice, thanks. The plumbing snake could see business from our shower drain and thanks for the comment 😊!

@@ExpatLifeGhana oh yes indeed! you welcome.
They sell grits in Ghana. I forgot what it’s called but it’s served as breakfast with milk and sugar. Depending on where you live. You might find it. Ladies normally carry it on their head and serve it hot. Used to eat it when I was young
@Nana -Totally not the same and thanks for the comment 😊!
Yes I’ve heard ship everything you can
I tried to google it and I think grits are not fully fabricated in Ghana but the dried hominy is available. You would just have to grind it and soak it yourself since it will not be like US instant grits. The hominy product is called ekuegbeemin or ekuegbeemli. There is also a swallow food made from yellow cornmeal so I know they have grits over there.
Great comment - Thanks for adding to the conversation ❤️️💛💚!
With mattress, I suggest you go direct to the mattress manufacturers. A couple in the Industrial area in Accra - Latex foam and Ashfoam. Speak direct with the General/Sales Managers and they will help you chose the best type of mattress for your body. You can even have it customised to your bed size and even choose the covering you prefer. There are different types of orthopedics. I brought a couple of mattresses from UK when I relocated but the customised ones I bought from Latex foam seem much better for the body attested by friends and family who have visited from overseas.
@Afua Sapong - Great suggestion, will look into local manufacturer and thanks for the comment 😊!
Uncle you can do a retail but you need to invest 1million USD if you are not a Ghanaian but if you partner with a Ghanaian you need to invest maximum up 25000USD that is why people prefer to partner with Ghanaians so things can be very easy and simple

wow. . . I loved the bed that I slept on when I went there. Not sure if they were locally made or not but all the b Eds were so firm and extremely comfortable to me
@KamishaRa's Korner - We are pillow top people and thanks for the comment 😊!
This is so powerful! I have been on both sides of shipping everything and shipping nothing since we still have two years or so Lord willing my husband is waiting to decide until closer to the time one of the games he is concerned about is the quality items by there in terms of treadmills and he did mention the mattress and possibly the living room furniture lawn equipment and things of that nature. I think I’m kind of in the middle now about shipping maybe ship some stuff and leave some. He definitely wants to ship his TVs which one of them is 70 something inch so he spent a lot of money on it and thanks the quality there would not be as good. So to answer your question I think we’re still undecided but if I have two years I think I will try and see if in that time I make sure I don’t buy anything and as a matter of fact start getting rid of some things that just sit around for no apparent reason. I would love to see a video or several perhaps hey series of videos as you guys buy things for your home and you go shopping for them I would like to see a comparison of the quality of the items available. I did go to ShopRite when I was there and took some pictures and videos of the items you could purchase but that was the only place that I really looked for household items
@Kimberly Mensah - Everything you mentioned with the exception of the mattress can be found here in brand names. We purchased a 65" Samsung television and found most major brand names at electronic stores. There are stores that carry lawn equipment, power washers, treadmills etc. On spintex road in Accra you can find almost anything and thanks for the comment 😊!

Another great video.....great content for persons who are shipping because that can be a nightmare. Such valuable information for prospective investors......always wondered why Africans and Caribbean ppl don’t utilize the sun more for their energy needs......the sun is free!! Hope you find a good mattress :-)
@Savannah Wilson - Really appreciate that! Solar is the way to go and thanks for the comment 😊!
I’ve been searching for a shipping company, thank you. I’ll be using them.
Yes, we have lots of people reaching out for a reliable contact... Best of luck with the move @Shelis Shepp and we'll see you soon ❤️️ 💛 💚
Contact any Ghanaian in your state and they will help you about shipping. I'm in the US 🇺🇸 we ship all the time to Ghana. This company might be expensive
@@joeachie4676 I live in Alaska but currently in Elmina checking on my house. I only know 2 Ghanaians in the US and they both don’t know anyone they trust. This was the only positive info I’ve ever gotten. But you’re right it comes down to the price.
@@ExpatLifeGhana Thank you. I’m in Elmina right now checking on my build, been here since Sept 16th.
@@shelisshepp-nduom3803 I live in Seattle and there are Ghanaians who do shipping to Ghana 🇬🇭 and does not cost much. I guess we are neighbors. Washington and Alaska.
Oh my God uncle Thony looks like my Dad mr mensah who is from sunyani Ghana and I love his ideas
@Kobi Kobi - Cousin! Who knows, so many possibilities and thanks for the comment 😊!
Great video, good questions and knowledgeable guys, I wished we could have got some examples from say East to west north to south U.S. cities to Ghana for just examples, but thank you all
@Queen Mermaid -It really depends on location for pricing. The farther from the east the more you pay and thanks for the comment 😊!
Good stuff! I said the only thing I wanted to bring was my mattress, adjustable base and my books lol
@Aurora Nkrumah Yeah, we've been able to find a spring mattress with a pillowtop... but when you get to be a certain age, you really need that next level stuff, 😂🤣😂. I miss our orthopedic mattress and an adjustable base would be heaven ❤️️ 💛 💚
@@ExpatLifeGhana I could not sleep without my adjustable base. I appreciate all you guys help and hope to meet you when we arrive
Loving your videos Tony and I o, Keep up the good work I love the fact that you now can literally buy anything in Ghana I was about to suggest that one of your family members do door-to-door and send you a beautiful new mattress. But with the emergence of department stores and furniture stores all across across surely there has to be one where you can buy a new box spring or memory foam mattress? Maybe this could be in an upcoming video where to buy furniture interiors beds mattresses tables lamps LOL et cetera et cetera. I would definitely find a video like that very informative especially as we are hearing that you do not need to ship anything so it would be nice to know where we could go in Accra or temma
@Doreen Ayi - One of our upcoming videos is us buying furniture. We found the big stores prices for bedroom furniture to be pricey and not of good quality so we had our bedroom set hand made for us with real hardwood. We are gonna look into having a mattress made from a local manufacturer and thanks for the comment 😊!
I really really wish y’all recorded this a week ago, I just left Ghana yesterday. I would have brought grits 💯
@Matt Davenport -That's ok, there is an army of expats bringing some in the next couple weeks and months and thanks for the comment 😊!
Yes Tony, please consider the GIPC (Ghana Investment Promotion Center) also on DOING BUSINESS IN GHANA.
@Keeping THE FAITH Alive - They are actually on our list to be interviewed and thanks for the comment 😊!
Also with the duty it's also different if you are a repat or a citizen returning home to Ghana with your personal effects. Usually the personal effects are not costly to clear at customs. This may apply to repats and they need to declare it as personal effects.
Great comment - Thanks for adding to the conversation ❤️️💛💚!
Is there anything this company doesn’t do?? Lol most valuable information of Ghana I’ve gotten. Very great interview!
@Dnell Maon - Great to hear and thanks for the comment 😊!
