Super Mario Kart is a go-kart racing video game developed by Nintendo EAD for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The first game of the Mario Kart series, it was launched in Japan on August 27, 1992, in North America on September 1, 1992, and in Europe on January 21, 1993. Selling eight million copies worldwide, the game went on to become the third best selling SNES game of all time. Super Mario Kart was re-released on the Wiis Virtual Console in Japan on June 9, 2009, North America on November 23, 2009, and in Europe on April 2, 2010.
In Super Mario Kart the player takes control of one of eight Mario series characters, each with differing capabilities.In single player mode players can race against computer controlled characters in multi-race cups over three difficulty levels. During the races, offensive and speed boosting power-ups can be used to gain an advantage. Alternatively players can race against the clock in a Time Trial mode. In multi-player mode two players can simultaneously take part in the cups or can race against each other one-on-one in Match Race mode. In a third multiplayer mode -- Battle Mode -- the aim is to defeat the other players by attacking them with power-ups, destroying balloons which surround each kart.
Super Mario Kart received positive reviews and has been praised for its presentation, innovation and use of Mode 7 graphics. It has been ranked among the best games of all time by several organizations including Edge, IGN, The Age and GameSpot, while Guinness World Records has named it as the top console game ever. It is often credited with creating the kart-racing sub genre of video games, leading other developers to try to duplicate its success. The game is also seen as having been key to expanding the Mario series into non-platforming games, where the main goal in platform games is when the hero has to rescue the damsel in distress; this diversity has led to it become the best-selling game franchise of all time.[15][17] Several sequels to Super Mario Kart have been released, for consoles, handhelds and in arcades, each enjoying critical and commercial success. While some elements have developed throughout the series, the core experience from Super Mario Kart has remained intact.[18]
EXTRA COMMENT: The game that started the Mario Sport series and one of the best games of all time, Super Mario Kart is pure karting in its finest form you cant go wrong here... this is where it was perfect before the innovation of the cheapest item alive, The Blue Shell. -

I used to play this game everyday with my neighbor who was also my bestfriend. One day, his mom passed away, his dad got locked up for life. I'd never seen him again. When I see this game, I think of him. I hope he's ok.
how come you'll never see him again?
it been decades bro. I just found out this year that he got shot at the age of 14 due to gangs. Its sad and this world is a shit place now. RIP i will miss him forever
King Izzy gosh, man. Im sorry, I feel bad now.
dont worry about it. Its life! I just cherish these memories
King Izzy yeah your right.
R.I.P. 90's childhood. You'll always be missed
Yes sir
I share that feeling.

Mannnn 😂😂😂😂
@Michael O Callaghan Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct as well, and then N64 come out, 4 player split screen mario kart with the mates and goldeneye 007 those days great times, today games we sit alone online talking to people we never met, just not the same nor as much fun
Lol facts I always whoop my friend in mortal kombat 11 he never wants to play😂🥵
Wish I had friends to play retro mario kart games with
If you want to ruin friendships play co-op in any of the NSMB games, i guarantee they will never speak to you again
Me and my mum used to play this together all the time. I missed those times. Miss you mum 😢
I'm sure she cherished those memories with you.

Of all the Mario Kart games, I think this one plays the coolest music.
Composed by Soyo Oka, who also made the music in Pilotwings. A true legend
Agreed
I AGREE, FOR ME SNES MARIO KART WAS NINTENDO'S MUSICAL PEEK.
=)
God stop being so damn nosy guys. It doesn't matter for what the dad was locked up, what their last name was or why his childhood friend got shot. It's none of your damn business.
It's sad enough as it is.

this game saved my sanity...it came out right after my mom passed and me and my roommates at the time played it every night...we got so good at it that we invented different ways to make it difficult....our best creation was playing it with our bare feet, looking into a mirror.....and we still would kick our friends asses playing that way, while the played it regularly
That's impressive lmao
guess nintendo stole your mirror idea, lol
Not just this game, but Mario Kart Wii also helped keep me mentally stable and keep my innocence after seeing numerous disturbing stories on the news.
sounds like something Nathaniel bandy would do lmao
A classic from SNES.
now playable on switch

I remember this game had a weird sort of algorithm where, depending on which character you chose to play as, other characters would almost always finish in certain positions unless they got hit by a shell or banana and couldn't catch up in time. I always tried to mess with the algorithm by hitting certain characters so that my favorite characters would finish higher. Good memories!
Ha, ha, I remember the same thing. Banana peel dead centre near the finish line always did the trick for me.
Yes
Has anyone played this game while under the influence of alcohol?
That Rainbow Road music just transports me back to my childhood. Wish it was 1992 again!
So many good memories from my youth. I remember playing this with my father when I was 10. Played Mario Kart 64 with two of my brother. Then played (and still play when we get together) Double Dash with my three younger brothers.
It's always great to look back on the games that started it all. Do you ever wonder if Mario Kart was ever thought to go far or was planned to be a small gimmick game? It's fantastic to see the Mario Kart series grow into being what it is now.
i always resonated with nintendo's game library the most because it reminds me of simpler times. the games these days have lost their magic and playability. everything's too dark and serious.
Yep, exactly my thoughts.
@@armincakar6518 me to
There are 8 characters in SMK, and also 8 trach themes, so each theme is probably for a certain character.
Mario Circuit ---> Mario
Donut Plains ---> Yoshi
Ghost Valley ---> Princess Peach
Bowser Castle ---> Bowser
Choco Island ---> Donkey Kong JR
Koopa Beach ---> Koopa Troopa
Vanilla Lake ---> Toad
Rainbow Road ---> Luigi
Originally Rainbow Road wasn't going to exist and instead, there would be Choco Island 3. And since Luigi was only meant to be a Green Mario for Player 2 with no personality traits at the time, Luigi being the only character to not have a track theme originally makes sense, and as such, it makes sense that Rainbow Road (And by default, all future Rainbow Road tracks.) is/was meant for Luigi.
That is also part of the reason the track theme for Princess Peach is Ghost Valley, because every track theme had some sort of connection to the other characters, so the Ghost Valley track theme was labeled for Princess Peach by default.

Lol, Bowser, bless him. He always finished in last place.
and Donkey Kong Jr. was always first or second lol :)!
Luigi was always 5th and Yoshi always 4th
Bowser and DK were the best when you learned how to drift (and jump bounce off walls) :D
Classical Music11 I
He's bad. He deserved it!
don't you just love the sound chip of the SNES. Those SFX and music can't be matched.
I think it's because it's digital MIDI/Orchestra type sound effects that emulate real instruments and make it sound so unique. Sure it's technically limited sound compared to today but for some reason it just works on the SNES. And the unique Mode 7 Graphics complement the unique sound chip. Which is why even to this day nothing really compares to the SNES experience. And this coming from a guy that was a Genesis owner back in the day.
Crazy fact: The sound chip in the SNES was from SONY, not Nintendo itself.
@@LITTLE1994 wow..and that would have been before the playstation came out
Christmas Eve 1992, I'll never forget that day. When I had the SNES with Street fighter 2 and that game. Good old time
I could sit here watching this all day. I still have the snes and games I had as a kid and get them out from time to time esp when unwell or something and need a cheering up. Loved this game and some of the others. Loved it loved it loved it.
This game & video does stuff to me every time I see it its awesome!!!
@Bogdan Prely Nice to read my 4 year old comment :) But what did you mean?
This game has honestly aged flawlessly. I still love this game as much as when it first came out 25 years ago.
I wouldn't say "flawlessly," it's near impossible to control the vehicle compared to any mario kart game made in the past two decades

I loved playing Mario at first, then when I went for 150cc I switched to Toad, a light weight, because he could turn much quicker and accelerate. I beat Special cup with Toad and it was the greatest feeling in the world! so much hard work getting each race down flawlessly.
This is my favorite game of all time!
Me too
my game of infance😊
MetalmaT same
Mine too.
I’d have to side with Mario Galaxy as my all-time favorite game
Interesting how it's pixelated but also 3D. I dunno why, but I just like it better when graphics aren't too realistic.
JesseRoxII Because it's not 3D, it's "mode 7": the circuit is actually on a background 2D panel which is zoomed and rotated. But the true secret of the game explaining its success is the impressively accurate handling and the depth of the driving (which of course was cartoonish unrealistic but did require true skills in its own way). It was a real revolution.
Actually, it is sorta 3d. The track/ ground is a 2d sprite, that is rotated in a 3d environment. Imagine that the sprites are pieces of paper. The sprites are pressed up against the screen normally, but using mode 7, the ground sprite is rotated behind the screen to a 45 degree angle.
normal: screen >. [ | < sprite
mode 7: screen >. [ / < sprite
+Metr0politan92
ooh sorry. Turns out mode 7 is actually a 2 dimensional sprite layer on the SNES itself...
Jack Winsper 2.5D is the term used to describe this.
JesseRoxII me too!
Oldies but goldies, we had years of fun with this, also the one where you have to bust other people's balloons on the carts.

So many awesome memories of playing this with my younger sis & cousin at our Gram's... the 'Battle Mode' was always one of my faves since we used to come up with a million different ways to play it.
Still my favorite Mario Kart til this very day.
I havent played it yet... looks cool dough...

john doe why?
SuperBearcreek Because the original Mario Kart is better than any current Mario Kart that nintendo has released.
Really? The original is definently not the best
I played this Mario kart game back in 1995 it was my favourite game then and still is today
The poor Koopa Troopa. Always gettin' lapped!
not when I play, I always choose koopa troopa, medium speed best turning whats not to love

Xarai and it took you what? 3 months to reply to this?
Plus I think this was for some other comment

oh god the memories, the music makes me want to cry. I remember I used to play this with a load of other kids at a child minders where I met my first girlfriend. It's all been downhill since then :'(
I feel so sad now... and I was in a good mood too...
I hope your doing well in life❤️
this game has THE BEST SOUNDTRACK IVE EVER HEARD.
that's an exaggeration lol
Waluigi pinball
you didn't hear many soundtracks then
I played this game till my thumb was sore, and thats when I would just drive out of town to the mall to play the demo in sears for hours at a time. This game was really something special. Glad it came about, love to hear it's vintage sounds. Also love the track with the jump over it's self as the last mushroom track. Use to drop a banana peel right on the boost before the jump so an NPC would have to do part of the track over again.
This brings so much memories!
Thanks! Loved this game!!! This and super mario world are my all time favorite games.
And zelda, link to the past..Those three..Oh and forgotten worlds on mega drive
If you thought this game was good, wait til you play any of the mario kart games made after 2001
This brought back wonderful memories. Wish I was a kid again. Growing up in the 1990’s was the absolute best.
This is by far the best Mario Kart out there to this day no other Mario Kart comes close in my opinion.

Man the memories just flooded back watching this. Playing this with my dad when I was 7 or 8 years old. Now I play stuff like Fortnite with my 7 year old and it just isn't the same.
you just have to love nintendo's retro soundtracks, they were awesome back in the day, still awesome today.
This game was my childhood. The game where it made a change to racing. Super Mario Bros changed the whole video game era from the 80's to the 90's and because of Miyamoto (Founder of Nintendo, the super mario company) HE changed video games from, Pong, to Galaga, to pacman, to ms. pacman, s=and to the super mario we know today. Without him, well we wouldn't have the video game graphics we have today.
The musica of the first lap, in my memories forever. I remember watching my older brother playing this

one of my favorite games. i still play it to this day
A very legendary game.
One of my favorite SNES Games. I miss these days.
I loved this game! Brings back so many memories. I was a master at Mario Kart. My player of choice was the Princess. She moved faster and didn't get pushed around like Toad or Koopa Troopa. Mario and Luigi skidded too much. Bowser and Donkey Kong moved like dump trunks, slow start but get out of their way.
los juegos viejitos de snes aún siguen siendo buenos... y entretenedores!
I adored this game as a kid. Everything is perfect. Great graphics, gameplay, and such a memorable soundtrack.
I have been binge watching long plays of old Mario Kart.
One of my all time favorite games!
Nintendo should remake all of their old games with current generation graphics for the new generation. Make an option in the games where old schoolers like us can change the graphics back to the SNES days.
One thing I have always wondered is why does the computer controlled characters have specials and the player does not?
JCSMOOTH345 The AI in Super Mario Kart all have a a special move to counter the human player. This is a programmed event to try and give the computer a chance to catch up to the player, should they get hit by these projectiles. Other computers can be hit but due to the computer being programmed to jump around obstacles to rubber band, usually they miss the projectiles leaving them for the human player to avoid again on the next lap until the sprite render removes it due to excessive projectiles. Mario and Luigi use stars when the human player is in second to try and prevent the player from passing them. Other AI's will throw projectiles once the human player has passed them unless the human player is right behind them, in which they will back spam it. Sorry I took 6 months to find this comment but perhaps this could still come to good use I hope. :)
JCSMOOTH345 and for mode 7 games they should also add an option to make it all flat (mode 7) and the pixelated option should be separate.
JCSMOOTH345 they remade some of the levels for the current generation, in the virtual console cups, but I do agree that they should remake them though it would take a lot of time to remake everything.
They sort of remake old tracks, like Mario circuit and ghost valley.

My childhood, hours and hours of this awesome of a game
So much nostalgia, I always used to play this as a kid
When we were kids, my sister and I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE to play this game. I used to love to throw the bananas.
P
Very clever use of the Mode 7 effects from F-Zero. This truly shows the Power of the Super Nintendo. I don't think the Mega Drive had anything like it. Most modern gamers say there are way better racing games out there than MK, but I disagree! Mario Kart is a fun and addictive game no matter how old you are! (:
Actually, the Genesis was capable of such thanks to its faster processor. Games like Sonic Spinball (As seen in intro), Gunstar Heroes, and Vectorman shows that it doesn't need Mode 7 for such effects.
omg this music, the memories... amazing stuff
it's amazing to see this. my driver of choice back in the day way always Koopa Troopa :)
