Super Mario Kart is the first in a popular series of games starring the Mario cast racing go-karts. This run aims to get record times in all tracks at 150cc difficulty. This is achieved mostly by jumping straight into walls, bottomless pits, and lava, among many other things. Mushrooms are also used frequently due to their mysteriously friction-free propulsion powers. A high amount of wall-bouncing is required.
This run is over a minute and a half faster than the previous published run, due to new exploits of the definition of a lap. - Hry

Everybody gangsta until Lakitu says you’re in “LAP 号”
Put yourself in the shoes of one of the other drivers. You've got your go-kart all gassed up. You hauled it all the way out to the track and everybody's lined up... you're all ready for a fun little race. The light turns green and everyone except the mushroom guy takes off. Mushroom guy, however, just starts driving into a wall.
Under 10 seconds into the race, he declares himself the winner.
Fuck that guy, man.
Well more accurately, the race organizers declare that what he did was fine, and that he's the winner.
Declaring yourself the winner is one thing, having the officials declare you the winner when all you did was just drive into a wall repeatedly is a whole other level of rage.
Imagine how commentators would react to this nonsense

@@MeadejonesThere are no checkpoints for the game to see that the lap is being actually driven, so theoretically you can just bounce between the finish line and win.

Wow! Playing as a kid, I always felt that you kept your speed a tad longer if you bounced off a wall! To see it actually being used as a TAS maneuver makes me proud of myself!

Watching the track overview screen during this run is more entertaining than I could have imagined.
You know I’ve always figured it must be insanely easy to glitch Super Mario Kart, but I never really went and looked at the glitches for it. I was not disappointed by this video.

Probably some sort of item manipulation glitch, or maybe they just get lucky. After all, this is a TAS. It’s not in real-time.

Yes, but actually the "new" ultra shortcut (it was discovered like 2 years ago, I could be wrong) implies a cut similar to that (even if you have to do the first part anyway in order to skip the first key checkpoint and be considered by the game in the checkpoint region 0). Funny enough, this ultra has never been done without TAS, also because, if not done correctly, (as far as it seems to me) it doesn't save anything..

is this an emulator? cause idk how to record the screen in HD on snes? we use to record our games back in the day on vhs, but?
yeah! with how TAS works, you run the game on a computer, going through every frame to put in the inputs you want to do. it's much easier to do this using an emulator than with official hardware

1:30 How did pushing against a wall cause you to finish the race in less than 10-30 seconds?
2:10 How did falling off the track right before the finish line cause you to increment by 2 laps instead of 1?
5:55 How did you get 1 lap per frame?

Question #4...the programming of the AI favors the racer with the highest score. This is most likely to keep the player from running away with the cup. If you are able to knock a racer down in the rankings, the racers who passed him are now favored.
Sometimes when you bounce on the wall, you're bouncing where the finish line would be if it continued past where it shows up in-game. So you're bouncing backwards, back over the finish line in order to give yourself another lap.
If you pass over the finish line, but turn in mid-air, then you'll land before the finish line. Even if it's only a little bit, then Lakitu picks you up and carries you back over for a second counted lap.
I feel like there may be pause buffering happening to do the single-frame laps? I'm not 100% on that though.
