      I agree. We all forgive TGV's love for nato's and various straps, but luxury divewatches like these belong on their bracelets, or at least should be reviewed with them.

    Let's face it the "in-house" movement is all about controlling the service and parts availability and therefore... service MARKUP! Personally (IMHO) I am happy to own the Tudor pre in-house with ETA, it is very refreshing and freeing to know I can go to my local reliable watch repair shop when I require a service for my Black Bay and not get raked over the coals through the dealer! ETA parts will always be available where OEM in-house parts will not be available to outside dealers. You have to find a trustworthy repair shop and once you do this to me is the way to go long term for a watch of this caliber. Then with the black bay pre-inhouse, there is indeed the rose, as well to me, an X-factor and romance of its own in this watch!

    • @matts90
      @matts90 Před 8 lety +4

      I personally wouldn't hesitate to buy the one with the new movement, but I don't think in-house is as meaningful in a tool watch with a solid case back. I just want a watch like this to be reliable and, as you point out, easy to service. If it's a JCL or something, I want a movement that's a beauty to look at.

    • @tendrams
      @tendrams Před 8 lety +4

      +100. The more I think about it, I would much prefer to not be spending $700 every few years to service a $3000 watch. In fact, there is a reason Rolex is able to sell these Tudor's (even with in house movements) for so little....and it's because they know they will make their money on the back end of the transaction.

    • @JaxWatchesandEDC
      @JaxWatchesandEDC Před 8 lety +2

      My understanding was that ETA wasn't going to sell parts to independent watch makers. I've been staying away from ETA powered watches because of this.

    • @tendrams
      @tendrams Před 8 lety +2

      Even if that were the case, it really almost doesn't matter. If one were actually pressed, with so many ETA movements floating around, cannibalizing another watch for parts starts to make sense good sense. If one were really that worried about it, buying a spare ETA movement or two today to keep in reserve would also be a possibility.

    • @JaxWatchesandEDC
      @JaxWatchesandEDC Před 8 lety +1

    Overall a great comparison. However you called the movement in the Black Bay a "standard" ETA. It is anything but standard. They started with the Top grade ETA movement and the Tudor modified that movement further. It is an incredibly reliable movement. The ETA BBs will only increase in value.

      It is true. It isn't a std ETA or even elaborate ETA. What Tudor does is take the top grade ETA (which has all the compartments for COSC ETA) and Rolex modifies this up to 5 points i believe? My BB runs around 2 seconds a day, well within COSC specs (and even Rolex specs which are +5/-3). Nothing to sneeze at imo. I would give the movement an 8 instead of a 7. This isn't your normal ETA.

Your love for Tudor shows clearly but your professionalism and duty to give a fair comparison with the facts you had available make your judgement valid and for an independent one, credible. I would not be surprised if Tudor were to someday thank you for assisting in the boost of their marketing.
    Also watching you read from notes to ensure minimal "slips" , deserves a huge Thank You from us whom not only view but value your opinions and sometimes depend on your words when making a purchase. I've made the mistake before thinking that became a watch cost more that I'd like it more. I purchased a Omega Planet Ocean titanium (with a retail price on Omega's site of $8,000) I ended up selling the PO and purchasing an Omega SMP ceramic (retailing at $4400 on Omega's website) I find myself enjoying the SMP so much more! Just because you pay more money for a watch doesn't mean it's going to have that special something that makes you put it on everyday. Thought I'd share that with you watch lovers. If you can love a watch that cost half the price, their is nothing wrong with it.

    Just picked up the Tudor featured in this comparison. The Tudor just seems to exude more class and the design is just different enough to stand on its own. Love the Tudor rose after spending many years in Europe and traveling to the UK gaining a historical appreciation for the symbolism. It’s a little thinner than its 2016 successor and really is the goldilocks of the genre in my humble opinion. Fantastic everyday watch that I won’t be bothered if it gets a little weathered. Great video TGV!

    Another great video, TGV! One thing people often overlook in the ceramic v aluminum bezel debate is cost of repair. While an aluminum bezel is easier to damage, it is also easy and cheap to replace the insert. A ceramic is less likely to be damaged, but it's not indestructible. Repairing one is quite expensive. That aspect almost comes down to personal preference.

      I though that too, I recently tried on both the Black Bay and SMP and found the Tudor to came across as far better built. I don't know if it was an over used display model but the SMP had the worst bezel action I've ever seen, it had massive play in it and didn't even line up at 12 correctly. Although it has an inferior insert the Tudor bezel action is impeccable. I preferred the Tudor bracelet too, the SMP is legendary for its comfort but it's very fussy and outdated looking imo.

    Of all the manufacturers reviewed, I have not heard mention of Tag Heuer. Any reason for this? I am curious since my collection base piece is a TAG Aquaracer, and I really love that piece.
    Second, I am currently living in Japan (specifically Okinawa). Do you or anyone have tips on either venues or brands to take advantage of while I am here? You mentioned buying in Japan on several occasions and I am thinking of trying to add some Seikos or Orient Stars to my collection. I have a USD 1100 budget and they are both on the same range of'quality aren't they, unless'you have another model to suggest.
    thanks in advance and once again congrats for you youtube channel

      Hmmm, maybe the Hulk, just because it is so different.
      Apart from the Alpinist, never had a Green watch, I think it would be fun.

    Hi tgv, great vid and a great duel, no surprise that the suby take it but would take a lot to beat, hmmm what would beat the sub in that price range, maybe one for you to answer lol, all the best my friend, Ryan. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS.

    Perfect comparison. I have been obsessing about the Rolex Submariner all my adult life. The Rolex purchase has always been pushed aside due to its higher cost. In its place I have purchased and kept an Omega Seamaster, an Omega Speedmaster, countless Tissots and a pile of Citizens and a few Seikos. I've been eyeing the obvious alternative, the Tudor Black Bay. I will be purchasing a brand new 2015 Tudor Black Bay with in house movement for just a bit under $6,000 Canadian dollars. For me this will be a very much welcomed and cherished addition to my collection. I'm genuinely appreciate your review TGV! With this review you've basically sealed the deal on this watch, I'll be picking up this watch in Vancouver in January 2017! The Rolex can wait a bit longer :-)
    Many thanks to you for your review, awesome job!!!
    Sincerely,
    Benjamin M W 😃👍

    TGV, how about renaming the "Design" category to an unambiguous word like "Utility" or "Function"? That way you don't have to explain every time you do a review, which I've noticed on 4 or 5 occasions now I think.
    Hope this suggestion is helpful! As always, I love the enthusiasm and knowledgeability of the reviews and I'm planning on getting that Tudor for my next purchase! Ciao! ☺😊😆

    Both lovely,lovely watches.Tudor are so underrated and it is a great watch for the money.However,we all know the Submariner is an absolute icon,whether with the date,or not.
    Love your video,even if I have been late in catching up with it ! Keep well and stay safe.

    I really enjoyed the video,the Rolex is very beautiful. I'm also very impressed by the Black Bay and have been thinking about buying one with the new in house movement. When you can get one to review I'll be keen to hear your opinions. When I look at the Rolex though I wonder if I'd be happier in the long run to save more money and buy one instead. I really like the no date version of the Submariner,the one thing I don't like about any Rolex is the cyclops. I'd like to see a comparison between your Submariner and an Omega Seamaster 300m master coaxial. Two high end rival companies head to head.

      +The Urban Gentry ...it's currently on my radar. Afraid I'd have to get rid of a couple to get one though. My biggest hesitation is the height of the case. I'm not a big fan of cases larger that 13mm tall. But it's such a looker! I think that it is unique enough that it could become the modern Sub and appeal to the younger generations.

    I'm trying my new BB on while watching your vid. Loving both (the watch and the vid). Does wearing the BB makes you want to eat dark chocolate and drink wine? Or is it just me who have this weird way to link a watch with food or certain experience?

  • @thallescoelhodacosa3580

    Very cool video! Black Bay Red is probably one of the best looking watches - there is one in Bronze, which is marvelous!

    Excellent video, as usual! I really enjoyed! :)
    What will be my choice in this case? Tudor. :)
    It's similar situation when I choose the Glycine on one of Your previous videos :) I never underestimate brands like ROLEX, but I prefer diver watches with cleaner line, with more simple, but nice styled and designed image.
    Thanks again for Your reviews! :)

    I just rewatched this cos I've owned the black bay (with the in-house movement) for a couple of months now and I gotta say, I'd give it a 10/10 for the x factor. There's just something about it. And I do get a lot of compliments on this timepiece. Anyway, still a great comparison.

    Love the Review TGV. The two watches on the chessboard is a nice touch. Rolex all day for mine of those two.Just can't match the build quality, performance, prestige and re-sale IMO. Would love to see some sort of Chrono battle. Omega Speedmaster Professional v ??? All the very best and loving the channel.

    Really enjoyed your presentation as always Tristano. I love your channel. Thank you! Regarding your comparison, I personally think there is no chance for the Tudor to compete on any level with the Submariner. To be fair, I would recommend you include the price in your comparison. One important reason someone would chose the Tudor over the Sub is simply the fact that it is more affordable. Anyway from my perspective two great watches.

  • @davidplayford9542

    Great duel vid as usual. Might just be me but I am really struggling with the Tudor with an ETA at the price. For me it does not come much above my C Ward Trident. Think it is the bezel that just does not match the price tag or it may just be that the Rolex looks so much better it does not do the Tudor justice.

  • @terryfrancis7639

    TGV with four 9's in the score of the Sub the total should be 96?
    I'm very lucky to have a Sea-Dweller 2000 Mark 0 from 1978 "The Great White" it was my 21st Birthday present from my parents. When I had it last serviced by Rolex it had to go back to HQ in Switzerland & took 17 weeks to get back on my wrist!
    I felt naked without it.
    Best wishes

    TGV, I think that you had the insight during the video: Tudor brand is targeted at Omega, with similar pricing. The watches have been designed and priced to not challenge Rolex (which is good brand management by Rolex Co.).
