In fact, an early assignment to Alaska helped expose the Florida native to the snowy mountains and evergreens that would become staples of his art.

I can see how that could be true. It's known that Ol' Bobby Paintbrush was a military man and would "come home and take off the soldier's top and put on the painter's hat." That much isn't in question. I haven't, however, confirmed which rank he retired at, or whether his vow never to scream again is something he actually said. I tend to believe it, though, or at least something similar.
He did say the vow to never scream thing. The whole discussion was in an interview for Orlando Sentinel sometime in the 90s, a few years before he died.
Idk about his final rank when he retired, but for the longest time he held the Master Sergeant position.
He started painting to relax himself from the Air Force memories as well I think

Fun fact: Bob Ross was a drill sgt. in Alaska, he was the guy who’d scream at people for their shoes being untied. In his free time, he’d paint the scenery and nature of Alaska, which gave him his iconic art style. When he was discharged from the army, he decided he just wouldn’t yell or scream ever again. And he didn’t. This is why he talked so softly and seemed like such a kind dude. Because he was kind, for the only reason that he didn’t want to be loud ever again.
