  • There used to be clock chimes using bells from Gillett and Johnston cast in 1908. The current system is now operated by a speaker and made by Smiths of Derby. We hear them chiming twelve o’clock.

I remember the days when the time ball was working and it would drop on the hour. It was designed for maritime timekeeping aboard ships offshore and when they saw the ball drop it meant it was the top of the hour. They could calculate the hour it was by the sun's positioning in the sky. They would use a compass and measure the height of the sun from the horizon. Few clock towers have this nowadays - they are mainly located in coastal areas as they were used at sea however there is a clock tower (I forget where) and they have a time ball but the tower is some 100 or so miles from the coast! The whole tower was taken down and rebuilt, brick by brick.

Westminster Chimes on Higher pitched bells sounds nicer than really low ones imo, less overtones.

They do! This recording which is speeded up/slowed down to achieve the required note.
