- There is one man in charge of changing the flag on a daily basis. No matter what the weather, he climbs to the top of the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill to change the Canadian Flag.
After that, he hands over the flag to the Ministers Office who will then mail it to a Canadian at the top of the waiting list. If you want to add your name to the waiting list to get a Canada Flag for yourself, you can do so here: www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca/citepar...

DownieLive is a canadian behind-the-scenes adventure channel, hosted by me, Michael Downie. Thanks for watching (and reading all the way to the bottom). As always, I don't know where I'm going next, but I know I want you there with me.
See you in the next one.

This was SO COOL. I spent 10yrs working on The Hill. Most of that time was in an MP's office & being a history buff & a snoop I took full advantage of my Security Pass & explored all of the Parliament Bldgs, all the nooks & crannies but ... I never got up into the very top of the Peace Tower. And, now I have, thanks to your vid. I'm also a flag fan so I was ... envy, envy, envy ... the whole time. Great story, Michael. (During my time in the MP's office only once did a constituent get to receive a Peace Tower flag. I well remember the flag coming into our office, doing the unfolding & being amazed at the immense size of the thing. And, the thrill of holding a flag that had actually been flying from the Peace Tower. Thanks for reminding me of all of this !!)
What a great experience you had, Allan. Thanks for sharing that with me. I’m glad I could show you the last place you hadn’t seen.
The first time I went to Ottawa I went up the tower and it was amazing. Being from BC it still freaks me out that there are no mountains!
Such a sweet video. I had no idea they change the flag everyday.
I'm proud to say that I have been up there too!! My friend was a maintenance manager there just over a decade ago and he took me for a tour! Most unique and amazing experience I've had. It's cool to look up and say - hey! I've been there :)
Wow! You’re so lucky! It’s such a cool spot.
...didn't realize there was a part 1 to this (LOL!) Excellent views from the top, but got a little dizzy (afraid of heights). The behind the scenes are something else. Thanks again Mike!
Okay that climb was a big cluster-phobic 😂 I felt it as a viewer!
But, as always awesomely filmed 🥰 thank you for an amazing channel 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks so much! Luckily for me I don’t mind tight spaces or heights.
DownieLive I wouldn’t be surprised if this year you got an offer to have your very own tv show 🍀 😍
As a new Permanent Resident to Canada, this video filled me with pride for my new home...thank you!
Oh yay Nicholas! My pleasure! Welcome to Canada.

This is so cool for the peace tower
I’ve been up there in 1984, up to the public observation deck which was opened the year before and sits below the clock faces. Gordon Slater the Dominion Carillonneur performed on the 53 bells daily as does his successor Andrea McReady.
Wow what a view!! Great vid thanks for the tag along!!
Awesome vid Mike! Informative and entertaining per usual. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Stephen. I appreciate it!
As someone who grew up in Ottawa, it's always been a dream of mine to be on top of Parliament Hill, so this video is quite amazing, getting to see what downtown looks like from up there
what I remember most was on the elevator going down was standing behind the corp of commissionaire seated on a stool and directly below where I was I could see a bottle of C C Canadian Club Whiskey .
All your videos are worth watching👍🇨🇦Thank you for sharing.
According to PSPC, the waiting period for both Peace Tower and other Parliament Hill flags exceeds 100 years
When a flag flies at half-mast, it may be offered to the family of the person being honored. For example, when former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed died in September 2012, the flag that flew on the day of his funeral was eventually presented to his widow Jeanne.
That was great, Mike! Thank you for doing this, and thank you to Robert for the ride-along! VERY COOL! (What did you use to film that?)
I used my Sony A6300 and the Insta360 One X.
Feel like I'm there with you Mike. Loving that new 360 footage!
Right? Man, it’s so helpful to shoot tough angles.
Very interesting. I think I'd have a heart attack up there lol.
You should put graphite on the top pulley...
It never actually occurred to me that the flags would be switched out so often. I wonder if it's the same in the US.
I put my name on the waiting list for one of these flags back in 2007 and after 12 years, I got the flag that flew a month after this video was posted. The flag that I have was likely one of the ones in that cabinet
Wow
Thanks Andrew. That’s what I thought!
Not a chance over my Dead body would I do that
