    I'm a train driver instructor and utilise the debrief that Captain does here often. A casual "how was it for you?" can open up so much from someone less experienced. It's a casual approach that allows the other person to open up and feel like they can talk freely, which is what you want from someone less experienced. I watch these videos, especially the after engine shutdown chat, for some more examples of how I can adapt it to my role. For me, leading a calm and relaxed cab environment leads to better communication from the trainee; allows them to feel like they can talk and they are relaxed. I also find that a relaxed environment allows us to react quicker to a sudden change in circumstances. Great work and excellent CRM!

      Thanks for your good feedback! I fly as a captain to Madeira since more than 15 years. Most approaches have been to runway 05. Sometimes runway 23 was in use during our approach briefing. But it changed during our approach to runway 05 on a short notice due to the changing winds.

    I was thinking it would be nice to see some outside-the-cockpit videos too. I’d love to see what an average day looks like for you; what you do when you get to the airport at the start of the day, pre-flight briefings/inspections, post-flight and preparing the aircraft for turnaround or securing it for the evening - that sort of thing!

      Regardless of the experience or training, the Portuguese aviation authority does not allow First Officers to land or takeoff at Funchal.
      It is only allowed for experienced Captains after an extensive simulator training program. Also, the Captains have to fly on a regular basis to Funchal to keep the permit to fly to the island.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 7 měsíci

      This approach was not that difficult because of the beautiful weather: Good views and the wind was not tricky at all. During high wind situations, I like runway 05 more because it is usually less bumpy on final approach than at runway 23. Also, runway 23 has a downslope. Runway 05 has an upslope which I like more. The visual turn prior to landing on runway 05 is more "work" to do compared to the straight in to runway 23. But it is not problem to fly the turn, especially if you did it very often before.

    Amazing video as always. Like other have commented nice to see an approach to 23 in LPMA.
    I always like to ask a question to try and learn one thing from every video if you don’t mind.
    What is the advantage of requesting the visual approach and swapping to that instead of the rnav?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching and your great feedback! In general, we ask for visual approaches because they are shorter and save fuel and flight time. In Funchal there are also other things to consider. Flying the visual approach gives us the opportunity to choose our own visual lateral and vertical tracks. Especially when flying the standard procedure to runway 05, we would have to circle to land with gear down and flaps in configuration 3 very early at low altitude. The visual approach gives us the opportunity to descent later and to configure the plane later. This saves fuel because flying straight with gear down and flaps 3 needs a good amount of additional fuel even if it is (almost) the same lateral track like the RNAV approach.

      Thanks for watching, your good feedback and your question! In general, I prefer runway 05. Especially if it is a windy day, runway 05 provides most of the time the less bumpy approach. Also, runway 05 has a good upslope, which I like more than the downslope of runway 23.

      There is no instrument landing system installed at Funchal airport. They only have non precision approaches available. Here we were cleared for the RNAV approach to runway 23. But we requested a visual approach as we had the runway in sight. So we continued visually to the airport. TRK/FPA was selected on the FMA instead of HDG/Vertical speed.

    Sir, I know that this airport is a 'landing by Captain only' airport. But I have a couple of questions. If the Captain is incapacitated during the approach for some reason, does the F.O have to take over and do a missed approach, then divert to the alternate closest airport (LPPS Porto Santo) to facilitate a landing, also if a 'land' decision has been made on approach to LPMA and the Captain is taken ill can the FO then continue?
    Many thanks for your interesting flight deck videos, I learn a lot from them, and take this over to Microsoft Flight Simulator on the Fly By Wire A320 NEO! Please keep up your great work. Regards Clive from the UK.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Thank you very much for watching and your great feedback! This is a very good question! When the Captain is incapacitated, the First Officer takes over and is now the pilot in command. He would call MAYDAY and tell ATC about his or her situation. It is the sole decision and responsibility of the First Officer where he or she is flying to. Due to the emergency status, the First Officer can use any airport for landing. This may include airports which are "Captain only" or military airports. I do assume that in most cases the First Officer would divert immediately to Porto Santo. If the incapacitation happens on final approach to Funchal, I assume that some experienced First Officers who had been to Funchal before, would try to land if the wind is not too bad, before they would fly to Porto Santo.

    • @halesworth01
      @halesworth01 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@ApproachandDepartureVideos Sir, thank you for your VERY quick response and explanation! In my experience as a simulator pilot having flown into Funchal using 'real world' generated winds and weather, I would opt for Porto Santo as Funchal (even on fairly benign days) is a challenge!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@halesworth01 Any decision has to focus on the best result for the passengers, the airplane and the sick Captain. If an experienced First Officer - who had been flown several times to Funchal as pilot monitoring - discovers on final approach that his or her Captain is incapacitated, it may be much easier to continue for a landing - if the wind is calm or not very challenging - as to go around and fly single pilot with an incapacitated Captain to Porto Santo. He or she may have never been to Porto Santo before and: The hospital and full medical services are only available at Madeira. On the other hand: If the First Officer thinks that it is not the best course of action to continue for a landing, he or she will abort the approach and fly to Porto Santo. It is his or her personal decision. The good thing is that such a situation is very rare. Greetings to the UK!
