This video shows the approach into Funchal-Madeira airport, starting at 5000ft. You can here and see Airbus standard operating procedures and checklists and LIVE ATC in the background giving clearances.
Funchal-Madeira Airport is on the list of the 10 most dangerous airports in the world. Winds chasing down the mountain accumulate to sudden strong crosswinds which can be hazardous for the pilot, making it ever so difficult to keep the plane aligned with the runway.
The airport is a "Captains Landing ONLY", so the pilot needs to have special training in a simulator and an actual check flight with a supervisor and then has to fly there on a regular basis to keep the license current for this airport.
Routing: Following the STAR (Standard Arrival Route) LIDRO 5A RNAV ending at waypoint ABUSU, then arrival chart VOR DMD 05 Circling (in video) and then arrival chart VOR DME 05 (Visual-in video).

Once upon a time... I was on holiday flight , and 90's there was possibility to visit cockpit. There was some kids (Well I was around 15yr old back then) going and coming from cockpit. After the traffic was settled down, I decided to go there. We had a pleasant chat with the Cpt and he asked me "How do you know so much about the instruments and flying?". Told him that my big dream is to be a pilot and I am seriously interested about flying and planes. :)
He listened to me, and asked if I wanted to stay in cockpit all the way to the stop!!! And suprisingly I did say YES!
That was so amazing! Thanks for the Captain awesome!!!
Too bad I had a car accident just before joining army, I wanted to go for pilot training, but I got seriously injured and that took my dream away.. I got broken neck and quadraplegia.
But all I want to say to you guys dreaming of being a pilot.. NEVER GIVE UP!!! Follow your dreams!

Have been a passenger on that landing several times in the late 80's when I was a kid, I remember the runway being MUCH shorter. One year we landed in very bad weather and I was sat on the right aisle, the plane touched down and most people seemed to be clapping in relief, I wasn't though as I could tell we were going way faster than usual as I saw the terminal building to my right! When we eventually stopped and turned, I remember seeing other passengers looking out of the window and saying 'bloody hell we were a bit close to the end!'. Excellent video, brings back memories. • @drrubi3944
      @drrubi3944 Před 7 lety +10

Exactly. That's just a matter of practice. The first few times it's hard, but it get's easier with the time. What you also should mention is, that this was a VOR-apporach (visual). If you do an ILS-Approach the Autopilot will guide you to the so called "Localizer" (a kind of radiobeacon) and will line you up with the centerline of the runway. So you don't have to guess if you're doing well or not. On certified Airports most modern Planes could even land alone (ILS Cat IIIb-Landing). Source: I'm a PPL(A) Pilot currently training for CPL.

Nice Videos Joe!! Had a question for you:
I listen to a lot of ATC on CZcams and have always wondered how pilots can make out what the tower says. Whenever I listen, there seems to be a lot of static and the voices seem quite unclear!
I also try to remember what the ATC Taxi instructions are but even though I'm just sitting in front of my computer it's difficult! I wonder how you guys do it!
    Keep posting more videos!

      Captain Joe
      Hi captain !
Do pilots crack a smile every time the r-word comes up right before touchdown (or am I the only one?).
Also, why did they use the r-word instead of just saying "slower" or "touchdown"? I mean ... the r-word is quite distracting...

I think Captain Joe also said in another video if I am not mistaken, that this airport is a Captain landing ONLY, and that the Captain goes through special training for that. If I am wrong correct me Captain.

no runway can be a captain only landing for all difficult approaches and airports I.E london city honduras st maarten etc pilots must pass extensive training for that particular airport or approach
