- Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Who remembers the epic battle of our childhood known as NSYNC vs Backstreet Boys? Cause boy do I remember it. But what I did not realize was that it was all fake. It was orchestrated by one man who was raking in the cash from both bands. Today we get into that and much MUCH more about the dark history of boy bands, from when they started to where they are now. And let me tell you, it is QUITE a tale.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.
You can find Dark History podcast on Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, and every Thursday here on my CZcams for the visual side of things.

Wait wait wait….Bailey if there isn’t a “Dark History of Disney” episode then maybe you’d consider making one? 🤞🏾
That would be great and au courant. Unfortunately the world of “Disney” is a very hot topic nowadays. With all the current controversy between Disney Corp & the religious right Bailey might not want to be thrown into the mix.
@@davidvento5481 understandable
Disney is pretty much untouchable. They'd sue her into the next dimension.
YES
This would be a serious not an episode 🤣
She said “before he was livin la vida loca, he was livin la vida toxica” I’m dead 🤣🤣🤣
You could do an entire video like this on Simon Cowell. One direction, little mix, and fifth harmony all came out of the Simon cowell machine and have pretty dark history’s
And the spice girls of course. A man named the group and it's members. 😓
don't forget prettymuch came from him too
Girls aloud touched on what they went through in a book. They never put much info in. We all thought they went to this great life, nope they were put in a house together, left alone for days at a time, with no contact & no suport. Its not like they could even go out. They were doing their own hair & makeup for gigs & they still looked hot. Yes theyv made their money now, only once they left simom cowell. Young kids will sign any contract when his label is telling them they will be stars. Laywers should be on standbye to help youngsters on these showes.
She could also do multiple ones on Dan Schneider.
Yes yes do it do it if she don't do it I will be sad
Bye Bye Bye was actually written about Lou Pearlman after the band was able to get out of their contract with him!
After reading this I had to go back and watch the music video....them being puppets makes so much more sense now!!!
Wow!!! Did not know that
Well, it wasn't written by the group, I think it had a dual meaning.
"The Swedish team of Jacob Schulze, Andreas Carlsson and Kristian Lundin wrote "Bye Bye Bye," with Lundin and Schulze producing"
Wow thats wild . It makes so much sense
The music starts and my daughter says “YES DARK HISTORY! Watch it now so you can see if it’s one I can watch yet!” We love you Bailey 🖤
How cute! Which ones have you not allowed her to watch?
@@LotsofLisa she’s watch quite a few. She is a youngster so it just depends on the content. I don’t sugar coat history for her. She asks me to give her the age appropriate version until she is able to watch them herself. It’s amazing bonding time. I appreciate what Bailey does so much.
I let my daughter watch the banana episode and now the name "Sam" is no longer safe in our house
All my daughter wanted for Christmas was dark history merch now all her aunts watch this channel too☺️
🥺 that’s precious! What a cool kid 😊
You should do a dark history on MLMs!! So many of them it’s crazy and they specifically target women, stay at home moms, college kids, churches, military wives and it’s so awful how they prey on people.
Tupperware, Cutco, Mary Kay, Amway, Thrive, Usborne, HerbalLife, scentsy, Avon, Monat, Primerica, Doterra, Isagenix, Lularoe, I could go on
Yes. This would be a great subject for Dark History. And don't forget Optavia. Basically you're paying a lot of money to get an eating disorder.
Yessss!!! Don’t forget to look into Amway..a lot of people don’t know about that one and it’s a big one.
Let's face facts about Tupperware their quality is up their and puts the stuff sold by Rubbermaid & generic companies to shame. I said what I said..
Bailey is the only person that could explain MLM`s in a way that is interesting
I used to be a part of cutco and left the minute I could. I had recruited family into it. It’s all a lie. Nothing is your own choice despite what they tell you
I'd love a kpop dark history from Bailey's next episode 😁
same
Seriously. I think kpop managers are just as bad, if not a little worse, than American managers. I watched a documentary on the creation of one of many kpop female groups, and it was insane.
There is such a big rabbit hole going in to the K-pop world. I would love to see Bailey do a episode on it
sameeee
Samee
Man, every time I hear a story starting with Walt Disney, I KNOW it’s gonna be bad. Please do a dark history on Disney!!!!!
Please
@@panicitskaitlyn2967 you have a point
It would be 5 hours long
I will never forget in the One Direction documentary, the producer woke up Zayn for him to record for him and Zayn said "how long have I been asleep?" and the guy said "15 minutes." Thats insane! I cannot imagine having to do shows, make music, do interviews, interact with fans, rehearse, etc all on 15 minutes of sleep. Then do it all again the next day. Thats rough.
Bailey I've been wondering if theres any dark history behind wedding dresses, as I was watching "Say yes to the dress" the other day I caught myself thinking that it doesnt seem to have an end to how many dresses designs we can create, and how did it all started. Would love it if you ever talked about it :)
Funerals too. If you look into the backstory , you’ll see that everything, from the ring to the invitations has a satanic meaning.
I love both of these ideas ❤️
Yes. There is a dark history behind all of the typical wedding traditions.
Ever do the research into Christmas ornaments? That’s a disturbing one!
Definitely! Dark history of the wedding industry or something like that would be so interesting. The funeral industry as well.
As a K-Pop fan I thank you for also bringing this into the light to american people because we as fans can only do so much and plead their company's to give them breaks! They suffer the most by given horrible diets, and some include long hours of fasting! Thank you, for also acknowledging the unaliving of these kpop idols! Because this more common in this industry then most! Thank you for your acknowledgement! ❤️❤️
no joke
Also three of the New Edition members became Bell Biv Devoe that gave us the party classic Poison
That girl is poisoonn (poison!)
is it Bardot?
Don’t forget They became producers and discovered boys 2 men
@@lexuscoleman4488 im learning soo much from this comment section. thank you guys for all these incredible facts!!!
As Bobbys no1 fan I had to jump in… New Edition also gave us Bobby Brown ❤
Giiiiirl when you were talking about how every member plays a ‘role’ in the group, I had flashbacks to my teen years of stanning Fifth Harmony. The sweet one, Ally. The bad girl, Lauren, the hot one, Dinah, the quirky relatable one, Camila and the sporty dancer Miss Normani. A Dark History about the mistreatment of girl groups would absolutely smash tbh
Love this idea!
That's THE Normani right? I know, I know, I live under a rock with CZcams.
@@Noey87 yep. That’s her!
Isn’t 5th harmony the band that kris Jenner passed on managing??
@@cailin5309 no, I believe she managed BG5, Fifth Harmony was under Simon Cowell’s label
As a K-pop fan myself, I totally agree with your take! And you mentioned Shinee and Girls Generation, 2 OGs of the industry and AMAZING acts! But yeah, the training and cutting program, particularly in the 3 biggest music companies in Korea are brutal, and so are the contracts.
Lee Soo man was actually inspired by what Lou Perlman was doing in the US with his groups.
SHINEEEEEE
I was wondering if she was gonna mention kpop.
agreed!! Theres so many of the companies that are actually so bad with their groups, like even to the point of being bad at their jobs, leaving girl groups to rot after only two songs, constant substitutions, overworking, almost full control over their personal lives... as a kpop fan it hurts me when i notice these veins of abuse
Shinee and Snsd are my faves.. they’ve been through so much
I absolutely love your rendition of "ain't nothing but an ad break" you're the best 😂 😂
To all those asking where were their parents, please keep in mind that these predators groom the parents too.
Yup. Usually the first step is to gain the parents' trust, so if the kids later tell their parents what's happening, the response will be along the lines of, "How can you come up with these lies?! He's so nice!"
And that these parents are also so caught up in the fame and money they sometimes just don’t care what’s going on as long as the kid is bringing in the cash
Predators look for convenient prey. Probably, most of these kids were not that close to their parents to begin with. And lot of parents have issues regarding unfullfillment which they project on their kids. Predators snif that out.
And let's be real, there are plenty of cases of the parents themselves doing the exploiting or going along with it for their own gain.
the parents were too busy counting their dollar bills to notice what was happening to their kids.
If you were a history teacher, I wouldn't miss a class, I would also ask for overtime! :)
She probably gets paid better than most teachers. 😋
and extra classes!!!
Me too i wouldn't be tardy either 🙋🏾♀️👩🏾🎓
😊
She'd be the teacher that everybody goes to their room for study hall or something 😅
Yes 👏
So I started belting out “I want it that way” with you, and you and I were spot on in the harmony. Spot on. Unfortunately I’m wearing headphones and am outside, so the neighbors only heard my part. 😩
Which makes this aaaalllll worth it.
"unfortunately"? They got a free concert!
Kpop has a whole dark history from which a lot of people could be easily accused of a lot of crimes that go across de border of inhumanity. It's very crazy and the kpop fans that get mad when calling this out are the obsessed ones that also need help, this is clearly a red flag in the industry that many artists from the same have mentioned which left them with trauma for lifetimes. Thank you for mentioning it and bringing attention to it
Yeah instantly thought of kpop "training" and expectations the minute this episode started.
My mom was obsessed with New Kids on the Block as a teenager. She still hase this plastic baggie where she put her NKOTB trading cards, gum cassette containers things and newspaper clippings. She even wrote "Don't Touch" on the plastic bag in sharpie
Bailey is awesome 🙌🙌🙌🙌
You both are amazing!
Yaaas so are you man !!!!
Yea, guys, I agree!! You 2 r the best of the best 💪💪💪
So are you MrBallen! I can’t stop thinking of Wade from your video this week. 😬😣🤢🥴⚡️⚡️
Heyyyyyyyy! Its 2 of my favorite content creators!!!🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 I have so much love for both of you!
Lance Bass’ Mama was my teacher in middle school. We never really made a big deal of it. We went on a field trip and he met us there and it was so casual and so nice. We’re from Mississippi, and I remember my mother telling me when he came out, Mrs. Bass resigned because of all the hate she received about Lance. She started teaching again when i had her and I am so thankful she did!💕
That’s such a sweet story! (Minus the hate she got for Lance coming out)
Why would she get hate over that?
@@Aedra101 because its Mississippi and its super homophobic
@@Aedra101 Unfortunately in the south a lot of things are frowned upon. This was a while back, and the south as a whole now is more accepting than they were about different things then. I hope it’s able to be even better as time goes on!
Well, his mother seems like such a nice person, just like her son. I thought he and the rest of those boy band members who came out during that time were all really nice, grounded young men after watching the Lou Pearlman documentary. His mother seems like the nicest, sweetest mom. I'm glad he's been successful. It broke my heart that Pearlman stiffed those poor, young men who worked so hard at performing.
Bailey's younger fans won't fully understand this episode. It really is one for us older folk. . . . . I saw 2 days ago actually that Backstreet Boys are once again back. They're touring
They never left they've stayed touring and recording albums the entire time and never planned to qui5. Just took some years to focus on family lives ect but they never planned on giving up
I recently went to a Backstreet Boys concert and noticed how rough Nick looks. Now it totally makes sense. Nick went through a lot, along with the other members.
Nick has had it really bad, both from the BSB angle and also helping his younger brother (Aaron was also one of Lou's artists also, keep in mind) dealing with HIS trauma.
I went to a Comic Con a few years ago where the Backstreet Boys were. I’ve never seen so many 30 something women screaming like crazed teenagers (I was one of them btw 😂). It turned out to be on my 31st birthday, and I got birthday hugs from AJ, Howie, and NICK. I got covered in Nick Carter sweat on my birthday. My life is complete 😂
Yaaas after getting covered in Kevin and AJ sweat my life is complete! I know the feeling 😂😂😂🙌🙌
Yes!!!!
Thank you for mentioning Jonghyun! I've always been a fan of him! He changed some big aspects of the kpop world and is still loved today! Shinee just celebrated their 14 year anniversary and the fellow members always keep his memory alive! 💎💚
I came into kpop during the 2nd gen wave, and I had never really been a fan of Shinee, but his death hit me so hard. The fact that he helped start the process of shedding light on the abuses in the industry is a blessing, but I hate the price he paid for it, not to mention the fact that it's still happening.
Bailey had me the minute she said she liked *NSYNC more than the Backstreet Boys I’m here for it as much as I love her before now I love her even more✨🤍
I love boy bands so much. NKOTB, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, One Direction, Jonas Brothers 😭❤️
So sad that there's such a dark history behind them

For some reason I would just like to a second appreciate the way Bailey pronounced the t in skyrocketed at a little after 6:05. Oddly I'm super here for it hahaha
It gets even darker.
We all know the story of Lyle and Eric Menendez. The two brothers who killed their parents and are now serving life in jail. Well, their father José Menendez was the CEO of Sony Music at the same time Menudo was formed.
You can already guess where this is going. José abused his sons and the boys from Menudo. Till this day, former band members including Ricky Martin refuse to talk about José Menendez.
Edit to say: Menudo is coming out with a documentary on HBO Max discussing all the abuse they went through. Its very sad and disturbing but a real eye opener to what actually happens behind the scenes.
😳
😳
Wow, I had no idea!
😱🤯🤯🤯
Like everyone...wow😳😳😳
SHINee is pronounced as "shiny", and thank you so much for talking briefly about Jonghyun. He was my bias and was completely devastated in the weeks that followed when he decided to leave us. Today's KPop industry is leaps and bounds better than before. But the fans are the ones getting more and more toxic, it seems. But that may just be because of social media.
I was going to say the same thing about the pronunciation. I loved Jonghyun too. I will cry about him because it’s sad to see. They are all talented and beautiful souls but you can also see the hurt they feel.
So glad she brought up Jonghyun because I think that was the turning point for the industry to be more mindful of their groups. Of course the industry still needs work, but I'm glad it has changed since then. Now SHINee has more input on their work than the company does in their recent contract. So proud of them and I know Jonghyun would be too. 😊💎💎💎💎💎
I wanted to mention the pronunciation too lol, but yeah SHINee was one of the first Kpop bands I ever got into, so I was so sad when he passed :( the industry is so cruel.
he was my bias too. I had posters up of him on my walls that I just stared at after his passing. It's still so crazy to think about
After watching this, I came looking for someone to correct her. I'm glad she brought this up.❤❤❤
Not only have I just recently discovered your channel (and fell in love), BUT you're an NSYNC/JC GIRL!? Pffffft girl just when I thought you couldn't get any cooler. That sealed the deal. Respect.
You know Backstreet Boys are STILL TOURING and selling out venues today, right?
Their second run of the DNA tour is happening this year! Two more months, I can’t wait! 🧬
They’re not coming to my area and if I could I wouldn’t mind airfare and hotel plus the tickets to see them 😅
NKOTB is still touring also

Bailey, you should do a Dark History on the Free Masons. So much mystery and secrets surrounding them!
Dark History of Makeup!!! That would be a crazy rabbit hole!
The Jackson 5 didn’t really fall apart after Jermaine’s departure. The other boys went to epic records and renamed themselves “The Jacksons” and recorded/performed many hit songs! 😊 Michael still worked with his brothers for a while after starting his solo career.
Do you guys remember the episode of the fairly odd parents where Vicky holds Chip Skylark hostage and tries to marriage him because he’s rich. Then he tells her she’s broke and the record company pays for everything
yep. and your user name tho 🤣
A pre-teen friend and I once road along with my mom to pick up an older brother at a local resort, and all of a sudden this GIANT BUS pulls up behind us. My mom all calm didn't move the car, but my friend and I quickly figured it out. My mom says, "Oh must be those backside boys." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think I discovered Bailey in the funniest way.. back in 2019 on an online college discussion board we had to introduce ourselves. I said I loved true crime and crime docs.. one girl recommended Bailey Sarian on CZcams in her reply to me. I’ve been here ever since, 3 years strong!
Listing off all their roles then saying "Chris Kirpatrick was there. " just about choked on my food!
I came here to say this. I snorted when she said that.
Before this video, I honestly don't know the last time I laughed **for real** for real, but that comment & his photo on the screen... I fxcking lost it.😂
😂😂
Without Chris there would no *NSYNC. He formed the group. Yup Chris fan and proud of it.
Thank you for talking about this topic. And about Jonghyun. ♡
kinda surprised that simon cowell was left out of this but i guess that just proves that he’s far better at exploitation than the gp is used to seeing
honestly, I've been a kpop fan for quite some time and the dark side of it is horrific. Everything from how companies starve and abuse their trainees, the way obsessive fans are encouraged to mistreat the idols cause its profitable, the amount of control the companies have over the lives of the idols, etc is all just so horrific and sad to see. It itself could also become a whole dark history episode even though it's not really history cause it still happens.

You could honestly do an entire part two to this in regards to all of the horrible things that happen to the members of the groups in South Korea. On occasion. It's not pretty, and it makes my heart break for the artists involved on a daily basis. I try to support them in any way I can. 💔💜

YES WHERE ARE THE PARENTSSSSSSSS. I think about this all the time when I hear stories of child actors and singers who were just completely taken advantage of. Why are the parents just absent and letting this happen all the time?? It blows my mind.
of course it's not always the case but a lot of the time the parents are abusive to an extent as well. Relying on their kids money and making them work, not advocating for them when they are working more than they should. using their kids like a commodity. a great example of this is Jannette McCurdy or even Britney Spears. you can't be there constantly with your kids but you need to have a relationship where they can tell you when things are going on or something doesn't seem right.
Agreed! If you've ever watched the whole Michael Jackson thing, it's appalling that all the parents just let their young boys stay with MJ in his huge resort without any supervision. Kind of like pimping out their kids.

I like the question “How does it start?” it starts when u wanna know what their name is, then your watching all their videos. Before watching all of their videos - ie music videos, interviews, and performances. 90s didn’t have CZcams so , I guess there was more opportunities to meet the groups.
Seeing it from the start till now and how it translates to bb practices even now is really interesting. From the first Quartets to The Beatles, Back Street Boys then One Direction, and BTS is a really cool thought. And that’s just boy groups I wonder if there can be a version with just the girls.
With the passing of Aaron carter, could you maybe do a dark history of tragic child stars? He was exploited by the industry as well as his family. It’s so sad how people treated him not knowing his story.
Aaron destroyed himself while his subscribers watched and financed his demise.
TVXQ! Is a kpop group that will break your heart. They fought legally against SM. And also side note I love how Bailey had to defend herself against kpop fans, tbh they can get crazy scary
A Reminder for everyone to go support independent bands !!!!
It’s the only way to make a change to the music industry. I’m a music photographer and some of the INCREDIBLE bands i tour with quit because they don’t make enough to live and day jobs take over, but with the reach of Social media like TikTok its starting to change !! Support musicians, look for bands using hashtags or spotifiy’s “similar too” under your favourite artists profile ! 🥰
Love this ✨ 👏🏽
I literally have been saving this episode to watch with my 11 year old cause she needs to understand the hype of the boy band 🤣 Bailey, keep speaking to my stuck in the 90s soul!
i used to be a kpop stan around 2010-2013(ish) and am now a kpop stan since 2020 and the conditions have improved sooo much for the groups since then. they’re treated alot better (although many go through really tough training, contracts etc) which is really nice to see. ofcourse, there are still bad sides but not as bad as it used to be.
This is so true! As a gen z, I was and am a One Direction fan (directioner) growing up (I feel like everyone should have that fangirl phase growing up:) and I really loved it) and the torture they went through with the toxic management, the overworked schedules, the toxic continous criticism, the comparisons, the need to fit in with the the stereotypes set... were endless. One of the many causes why boy bands, once the members become older and gain control (or more like realise the right they have to their own control) break up and end up pursuing solo careers.
Recently learning about body systems and learning that blood flows in one direction through the heart...made me wonder if that's the reasoning behind their name...if so? Pretty clever
I've been following the Backstreet Boys since 97. I've met them a few times too now that I can afford it, really sweet guys. Aside from that, I remember watching the news stories on all the coverage on Lou. It's heartbreaking, it was discussed in their documentary, Show'em What We're Made Of. Thanks for covering this and loved the occasional mention of the BSB song titles.
Same!!!
I remember that documentary. They all went back to the house Lou bought that house the Backstreet Boys back in the beginning. I remember this scene because Nick Carter REFUSED to go inside the house with the rest of the guys. I remember thinking something really bad must have happened to him there, little did I know how right I was.
You should cover Magdalene laundries for “fallen women”!! I’d love to hear more about it from you and your team
Email it in please. They made a film & used this huge old building in Dumfries Scotland. Many of the Irish lassys got sent to Scotland. Sick what those women & girls went through. Some stayed for life, prisoners. All in the name of religeon & shame.
I want to make your AD BREAKS (Backstreet Boys) song bit my ring tone everytime I get an 800 number phone call lol. That was gold and beautiful 🤩
Even sadder when you realize Nick was 13 when he joined the group. Amazing he turned out the way he has and not the complete opposite direction.
This is literally what i needed right now. I had a panic attack while at work and my brain is just off. Now, i'm on my lunch break and your video is making me feel better. Thank you for this ❤️
She is so amazing and I too feel much calmer after one of her episodes. (Despite the content)
I still listen to all the 80’s and 90’s boy ands I used to listen to growing up. I remember when I was little one of my favorite birthday presents I got was the *NSYNC Barbie that came with an *NSYNC CD. So sad to hear what they all went through and how exploited they all were.
I remember buying singles at Sam Goody back in the day!
NSYNC and New Kids for LIFE!!!
😁
Love the light shade at Chris Kirkpatrick.
Say what you want, the impact of the Jackson family on the US and world entertainment stage, from the Jackson 5 to Michael as a solo artist to youngest Janet, cannot be underestimated and undervalued. I’m so glad Bailey highlighted that.
Bailey Sarian adapting lyrics and singing all the boy band hits of my youth is just the content I needed today 🤌
