Used to help out in a church food pantry. We got so much food from stores we would give out hundreds of bags of food a week. People need to understand a few things if they're considering asking stores for donations. 1-it's not a lack of food availability , it's committing to picking it up on a regular basis. 2-Picking it up when the store needs/tells you to. 3- Being on time for the pick up. Do those things consistently and you'll find stores that will gladly work with you.

Vermont Compost is a thriving business that relays on a waste stream to produce the most sot after compost in the continental USA .He does that with the help of free range chickens who only eat waste vegetables and fruit supplied from surrounding grocers, restaurants and the general public. There are others using a similar consent .FREE is one of my favorite words . We need to encourage a circular economy.

If you have local breweries or people who homebrew ask for their spent grains and malts, most of the time they just toss them. Not bad too, made some tasty oatmeal cookies woth them
We have a friend that brings us some occasionally but it isn't consistent enough to add.

had a small wild pig 6 years ago, it was being fed on cast off donuts when we got it, those evil grocery store donuts that start with E. the little girl loved it here, she had her own little pool, played in the sprinkler, and lots of corn and veggies...she wouldnt touch those nasty donuts here! she would fall asleep when i used the rake to scratch her belly... that was how she was dispatched, sleeping while getting her belly scratched. i was traumatized, even though i knew it had to happen. i felt really bad until i saw the butterflies gathering and siphoning up her blood. Butterflies came, for petes sake. she had fun on her last days.

She only had one bad day, good job loving on her while she was with you.
@@FlannelFarms thank you, years later it still hurts. but she was delicious, how jaded is that? 😏 we had a mexican pig roast, the men came and prepared her by shaving and butchering, i was not able to see that, some guy brought a huge copper pot and buckets of manteca, he came with his young sons who watched the whole thing, including the dispatching and butchering (no big deal to these kids), the pig was fried in a huge boiling pot of manteca, everyone ate their fill and went home with ziploks of "carnitas" (little meat) and the truly revolting chicharone, (just my personal feeling about chicharone, fried pig skin, mexican men LOVE it) the copper pot guy came next day to get all the new manteca with the new pig fat in it (mexicans waste NOTHING) ... dont care, still hurts, but not giving up bacon anytime soon
