  • We thought this rapid onset drought was an issue until we started digging them up! We made an unpleasant discovery. We also show you a side by side harvest comparison between our garden beds and container growing with potatoes! #potato #flannelfarms #garden #mice #harvest #Homestead #growyourownfood #grow #farm #diy

    Moles, voles, mice and rats ate my entire bed of potatoes and half of my sweet potatoes 5 years ago. So I used the sonic devices 4 years ago & still lost a third of my potatoes and sweet potatoes to critters. So 3 years ago, I planted in both 18” tall raised beds and in the ground, but the ground gardens were closer to the house and had lots of foot traffic by them. I lost about 20% in the ground gardens, still using the sonic devices, but the raised beds produced double of what the ground garden did and no losses in the tall raised beds. So this last year and this year, potatoes and sweet potatoes went into the tall raised beds. I amend all the garden beds with composted chicken & cow & goat manure and mulch with 6-8 inches of shredded leaves, adding more leaves as needed. I get beautiful harvests that usually need little watering until this year. No rain for +3 weeks, temps 90F+ and blistering sun means I’m watering daily or every other day as plants were still getting established. My potatoes are ready to harvest now and I’m hoping for a good harvest.

    Brian, nice to see you as usual. Just wanted to ask you and your family to join me in both prayer and praise. My husband's bone scan showed no growth outside the prostate (thank you Jesus). I on the other hand was not using my brain and had an accident that ended in me having surgery to reconnect a tendon in my right pinky finger. (don't ask). Thank God he sent excellent medical folks to take care of me. I hope things are good with you, I keep you in my prayers also.

    I've found with the potatoes, growing them in containers keeps them from self sowing where I don't want them. If that's not a concern and you want them to, definitely in the ground is best. But I needed to rotate, and they keep coming back up in the same spot, 3 years later. I have about 50 bags (made from feed bags) that I grow them in now, for only that reason. Plus the two rows they keep coming up in.

    Try the grow bags. Working well my 1st time and I'm not far away (Urbana v. Cape Henry). Always following advise from your brother, Gary at rusted garden , millennial gardener and others on the east coast.

    Good to hear from you. Maybe you can salvage the critter-eaten for food or for seed potatoes. We have had almost no rain this June here in Atlanta.

    Bad year. Many pest Deer, Squirrels,Voles, bugs. This year. Still time to plant more potatoes for fall harvest now. Last year I harvested 100# potatoes in July. This yeah looks pitiful. Garlic too. Combo of weather and pest. But freezer is still full from last year. ,

    It would have been interesting to see the comparison of the same number of plants and same soil. Was the ground garden get more fertilizer and more soil to grow in?

    • @FlannelFarms
      @FlannelFarms  Před měsícem

      Good question! Nothing got fertilizer and the container had deeper better soil.
      Next season I'm going to try again and do a more detailed comparison.

    Hi Brian, looks like a true learning experience. I have not grown regular potatoes here in FL9B. I do know that sweet potatoes for me have been very drought tolerant and hardy. Production is always impressive, and they come back strong every year. Just curious if you are or have tried growing them. Great vid.

      Hey Brett! We did try last year to grow sweet potatoes and had some success. A friend of ours is really good at getting slips started and he helped us out with them. We might try them again when we expand the garden area.
