Fry's Somerdale - Micro Layout - 00 Gauge - Update 5

- čas přidán 9. 05. 2020
- Welcome to the fifth installment on Fry's Somerdale, my latest 00 Gauge Micro Layout project, with the layout nearing completion.
Once again over the past few days I've been really focusing on the finishing scenery, continuing from where I left off, thanks to the arrival of some more Woodland Scenics fine leaf foliage. This has been used to great effect to build up the wooded area, along with the tree arch over the railway, as well as blending in the bill boards near the car park. The iconic gateway has also been completed, with the two gate posts receiving a final coat of weathering and gates glued into position. We also take a closer look at some special custom figures, including some familiar faces, from the likes of Hardy's Hobbies and ModelU, as well as a selection of diecast vehicles which will populate the scene. Finally we put the layout through it paces with it's first ever running session, featuring the model that started it all, as well as a new addition to the fleet...
I hope you've enjoyed the construction of this layout over the past few weeks, and I plan to bring you more updates and running sessions in the not too distant future. You never know, when normality returns you might see Fry's Somerdale on the exhibition circuit!

I'm a 78 y.o. "realist" Diorama and Layout hobby artist. What always bothers me with so many otherwise fine layouts is the lack of PEOPLE. On layouts you'll see trains running with no one around. Dioramas that are without figures are simply 3D paintings or photos - literally lifeless. Your use of figures is what makes your works interesting standouts. I thank you for sharing. This is Scale Rail Ray back to the roundhouse.
Used to pass this location many times going to Bristol, remember a small green shunting loco parked up in the factory sidings, nice model....
Many thanks Paul! Glad you like it! Need to find a model of that shunter
Delivered into there many times in the truck working for a local Bristol company. Right up until it closed. Only just found your channel and your work is amazing
Many thanks indeed! Glad you like it! Great to hear you have connections with the real site. Hope I've managed to do it justice.
Haha, Chris Eden Green figure, the scene is looking awesome, the trees are really good. 👍 Can't wait to see it at an exhibition 😀
Many thanks indeed! Ah yes, though he'd fit in quite well on there. Fingers crossed :)
Thanks Callum for a great series detailing the creation of "Frys Somerdale" its been awesome, thanks for sharing your micro layouts with us all. It just goes to show you don;t have a huge area for a model railway, that you can enjoy building and running. Looking forward to your next project. Stay safe to you and yours. Cheers
Many thanks Steve! No worries and glad you enjoyed the series! Honestly don't quote know how to follow this one up 😂
We will have to be patient Callum, and see what springs into your modelling imagination. But I am sure it will be worth waiting for 😁
I really like how you masked the entries to the diorama on both sides. really great.
Many thanks indeed! Took a while to get the blend right, but was well worth it for the end result.
So great to hear you say you'll put them on a footplate somewhere. Too many modellers lose the plot and we see trains with blacked out windows and empty and/or driverless units, yet populate everywhere else with people and passengers. I am slightly biased i used to drive trains for BR. Superb model and attention to detail.
Many thanks indeed Frank! Glad you like it! The addition of crew really does at the extra level of depth, plan to add a few more figures to different items of rolling stock on the layout too. Once again many thanks!
great work
Many thanks!
Nice work!
Many thanks
Nostalgia! We lived in Brislington and used to go that way to visit my grandfather in Warmley. Never saw a train, though, until now!
Many thanks! Glad you like it! Yes, like wise passing over the old crossing many time on my way to the Avon Valley Railway, such a shame the gates now gone
Absolutely brilliant. 😀👍👍👍👍👍
Many thanks Geoff!
It's very cool seeing the progress over the videos. What always impresses me about your videos Callum is how much detail you can fit into a small space. Thanks for letting us come along on the journey of the micro-layout.
Many thanks indeed Patrick. Glad you've enjoyed the build, so pleased with how it has turned out :) Trying to think what my next project could be :)
@@SDJR7F88 Of course, and yeah, that's always a challenge, isn't it?
Speaking on that, if you need ideas, something I've thought of (but haven't had the skills, resources, etc.) to do is micro-layouts you could connect together and rearrange.
Probably not possible to do right now, considering the circumstances but feel free to let that inspire you or consider if you want, depending on plausibility.
Would be wonderful to see this at an exhibition. It would be even more wonderful to be able to go to an exhibition! Here's hoping for 2021
Fingers crossed! Would love to get it on the circuit! :)
Epic layout
Thanks mate!
The way the road goes around the corner and disappears into the backscene is particularly well done. Great work Callum.
Many thanks indeed! So pleased with how that effect has turned out :) Really do set the whole scene off
Absolutely a brilliant layout idea, it’s very well done. I particularly love those trees in the woodland, very realistic. Thanks, Mel
Many thanks indeed! Glad you like it! So pleased with how it has all turned out
Blimey Calum....that’s bang on! I can just remember a 22 sticking its nose out of the gates back in the day!
Lovely!
Tony
Many thanks Tony! Bet that certainly was a sight! Shame the gates now gone. Glad you've enjoyed the build! Hope to get it on the circuit soon :)
Terrific job Callum, well done!
Many thanks!
Love the use of the back scene to the right, you cannot see the train entry aperture.
Many thanks indeed! So pleased with how it all turned out. With such a small scene I had to try and make as much of the space as possible :)
Absolutely bloody fantastic.! I can't wait to see this on the exhibition circuit.
Keep 'em coming!!
Many thanks indeed! Fingers crossed! Got a couple of invites all ready which is nice :)
Looking brilliant Callum! Really admire your creative talents. Love the amount of detail
Many thanks indeed Harry! Glad you like it! Just got to think of the next project now :)
The figures are incredible Callum. This is truly bringing back a piece of recent history. As i said on a previous video the way the road disappears into the photo is what brings it all into life. You've done a fantastic job.
They really do look the part! Really does set the whole scene off that. Many thanks indeed!
Hello, I have throughly enjoy watching this beautiful layout come together. Great build, great series! Thanks. Take care. See ya.
Many thanks indeed Norman! Glad you've enjoyed the build! Really pleased with how it has turned out. :)
Very nicely done! Love the little "honorary scenic bits" added.
Thank you very much! Glad you like it :)
Hey Callum, this has been an interesting and informative journey during these times and huge, huge thanks to you. You have shown that even homes with limited space can have a layout with trains running. Again great admiration for your modelling skills :) :) :) I am definitely going to make the effort to see it as and when we are allowed out and about.
Many thanks indeed! Glad you enjoyed the build! So pleased with how it has turned out :) Fingers crossed we can get it on the circuit
Awesome modelling
Thank you! Cheers!
A cracking job , well done!
Many thanks!
Fantastic stuff Calum! 👍 What’s been great about such a small and detailed layout is that you have been able to impart so many useful tips in such a short space of time. I’m now heading back to see how you created that amazing road and car park surface 👍
Many thanks Andrew! Glad you've enjoyed the build and it's been of inspection! So pleased with how it has turned out. Will have to try and do a little separate video on that at some point :) Once again many thanks!
Brilliant video Callum! The layout looks brilliant and the the detail looks really good.
Many thank mate! So pleased with how it's turned out
Very clever looks real well blended in
Many thanks Alan! Glad you like it! So pleased with how it's turned out
Very nice layout that my friend, excellent work. Love the Bedford ca and Austin a30.
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
The curved fence opposite the billboard's is a nice touch. So many times the fences on model railways are just straight and angled. Great touch Callum! :-)
Many thanks mate! Glad you like the little details like that! Was a challenge to get it right, but well worth it :)
That is just fantastic Callum, such a simple layout and plan but so effective. The work you've done on the weathering is brilliant. Just need to persuade Steve flint to get it featured in the magazine now 😉. Keep up the good work Callum and stay safe
Regards
James
Many thanks indeed! Glad you like it! Really pleased with how it has all turned out. You never know, maybe one day... Watch this space ;)
Great layout, turned out really nice
Many thanks indeed mate!
Impressive stuff recreated really well!
Many thanks! Glad you like it!
Great detail
Many thanks John! Glad you like it!
Amazing layout
Thank you! Glad you like it!
Looking forward to seeing this one eventually. Keep safe. Laurie.
Many thanks indeed! fingers crossed we can get it out on the circuit soon :)
Wonderful scenery transitions - great work and a new subscriber.
Many thanks indeed Phillip!
I love the trees in this.
Many thanks indeed! All widdland scenics fine leaf foliage :)
Definitely my favourite layout which has been constructed by yourself. Looks absolutely superb and I can't wait to potentially see it at an exhibition?
Thank you very much! Glad you like it! Me too, got a few invites all ready, though we will have to see what happens when the shows get back up and running :)
Hi Callum- The layout is a total success with those final details and I will look forward to seeing it at some exhibitions. The figures are great and I got mine from Hardys painted as well and very good they are too. ……………...Cheers Kev
Many thanks indeed! Fingers crossed it won't be too long until it has its first outing. They are good figures, really sets the scene of well. Just need to detail up those vehicles now
Absolute genius
Many thanks Kerry! Glad you like it!
Amazing can’t wait to see it that looks sunning😃
Many thanks mate! Hopefully we'll be able to get it on the circuit soon :)
SDJR7F88 let’s hope so😀
Hi Callum hope you are well another great video layout is looking awesome can't wait to see this at an excebition in the future all the best pete
Many thanks indeed Peter! Glad you've enjoyed the build! Fingers crossed! Got a few lined up all ready :)
Great update! Looks good. I've subbed!
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed the progress.
You are one skilled modeller my friend.
Many thanks indeed Paul!
Doesn’t need saying but i will, fantastic 👍🏻
Many thanks indeed!
Great stuff Callum. Hope my layout turns out half as well; preparing baseboards now. Good to meet you at Edington, the SDJR Society's show. Maurice
Many thanks indeed! I'm sure it will. Like wise, never know might be able to get the layout there at some point :)
First time subscriber......Great vid
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent as ever, pretty much there isn't it doesn't look to be much to do?
Many thanks indeed mate! Just a few things to weather up, such as the vehicles and strengthen the boards. Bar the, it's pretty much there
Excellent video mate shame we didn't see the loco in the thumbnail but still great work
Hi Sam, sadly that one is too big to run on the layout (won't trigger the shuttle system so would crash I to the end walls), but did work the real site. Did a little photoshoot on the layout and was so pleased with how it turned out I just had to use it somewhere :)
Superb layout Callum. The detail is unreal... er I mean so real. May I offer one suggestion? The photo from inside the cutting looking out shows the guard box, which you can't see from your layouts point of view. Have you thought about re-siting across the track for a little more detail and interest. I don't suppose it matters what side of the line it was so it won't matter to see it on your wonderful layout.
Many thanks Matt! Yes, I found an image of that in the book I've mentioned. Hard to tell if it was there in later years, as I think think the loco crew took over the crossing roll. There was also a lamp post too, which was there after the war, however I think it would just be inside the fiddle yard (phew). Might see if I can modify one of the Ratio fog huts to fit it :)
Brilliant job Callum! Love the whole scene, very familiar the location myself, and you've got it just right. Don't know if you've seen this photo if this works - someone on Flickr has a shot of a Hymek serving the siding.... www.flickr.com/photos/93122458@N08/15342839618 Also I think often when getting so close to road vehicles, the next modelling thing may be to put drivers in them too - after all, people-less cars haven't been invented yet! And, to cap it all, maybe put road vehicles could have positionable front wheels - rarely do I see wheels actually steering vehicles in the direction they seem to want to be going! Maybe in the next scene?!!! ;-)
Many thanks indeed! Yes, many of those images have been great help in the building of the layout. Hmm, have been thinking about adding lighting to them, so could do that when I get around to it :) Many thanks indeed!
Very nice series Callum. Whats next?
Many thanks indeed! Honestly don't quite know yet. Will have to see...
Very nicely done mate will this be a layout that you take to a exhibition ?
All at the end of the video ;)
Fantastic attention to detail! Are you still planning on shooting some night time running with that atmospheric street lamp? Would love to see that! :)
Many thanks! Fingers crossed when I get some time on an evening. It gets dark pretty late at the moment, so might have to save it for the winter months, but it something I certainly plan to still do :)
Looks absolutely amazing! Can you send me a link for the foliage please?
Many thanks, here's a link to a to the woodland scenics website; woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/TRFine-LeafFoliage
@@SDJR7F88 thank you :)
Looks fantastic Callum. Do you have a link to the book about fry’s you mentioned

SDJR7F88 thanks duly ordered a copy
Just add some boys in the trees doing some trainspotting😁 It's turned out really well Callum.
I heard that the Peco factory might be opening up again - will you be returning to work or staying at home?
PS - any night running going to happen?
Many thanks! Glad you like it! Yes, they returned in the factory two weeks ago, though in a special socially distanced work pattern. Not for me, still working from home. So never really stopped. Hopefully at some point, but it might have to wait until later in the year when the evenings are darker earlier :)
sorry for being ignorant but is this based on the Frys factory at Keynsham, later taken over by Cadbury? I only ask as I remember seeing blokes painting the word Somerdale on the railway embankment where the line runs parallel to the A4
Yes
@@SDJR7F88 Sad day when they took down the factory sign... no one really cared for the embankment sign Somerdale after that...
At 5:27 isn't that a diesel locomotive?
