  • In this episode Seth Fleishman from the World History by a Jew CZcams channel takes us into an interesting story that depicts the Sea Peoples in the Old Testament in a mythical story involving a Jewish woman and Judge Deborah.
It's in memory of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) a''h, as we explore an amazing Jewish woman and judge: Deborah. By reviewing her story, we will solve an ancient mystery regarding the settlement of Sea Peoples in northern Israel after the Bronze Age Collapse. We'll be focusing on two groups of Sea People specifically: the Shardana (Sherden) and the Tjeker (Tjekker). With the help of Deborah in the Book of Judges, we will learn about her foes, and then we'll utilize the latest archaeological discoveries to identify these people and their origins.
For those who may not be familiar with the Sea Peoples they are / were a purported seafaring confederation that attacked ancient Egypt and other regions of the East Mediterranean prior to and during the Late Bronze Age collapse (1200-900 BCE).
Following the creation of the concept in the nineteenth century, with famous historian Gaston Maspero being one of the first to use the term, it became one of the most famous chapters of Egyptian history, given its connection with, in the words of Wilhelm Max Müller: "the most important questions of ethnography and the primitive history of classic nations".
Their origins undocumented and highly disputed today, the various Sea Peoples have been proposed to have originated from places that include western Asia Minor, the Aegean, the Mediterranean islands and Southern Europe.
Although the archaeological inscriptions do not include reference to a migration, the Sea Peoples are conjectured to have sailed around the eastern Mediterranean and invaded Anatolia, Syria, Phoenicia, Canaan, Cyprus and Egypt toward the end of the Bronze Age. And in many cases they settled throughout the lands that they raided.
Summary taken from Wikipedia with details added for clarity.

It's endlessly fascinating. I love when scientists are able to give the history book its proper standing instead of being worshipped. Everyone is schooled now, words are no longer secret. It's time to stop worshipping words because they're not the only printed ones anymore. We need to learn our story on this rock. the sea ppls could have been from doggerland or some other now under water land mass.

Excellent work. This makes much sense, as both the Tjekker and the Shekelesh are named in that famous Medinet Habu inscription, while the Sherden are supposedly not mentioned. Now, when did the Sherden/Tjekker settle Sardinia? The appearance of the Nuragic civilization around 1900 BC seems to coincide with the rise of other cultures in the Near East, like the rise of Amorite Babylon and the appearance of the Hittite (Neshili) language.

the ancient history of sardinia is a mistery even for us natives to be honest. there are thousands of ruins, like the giants tombs, the well of saint cristina, the domus de janas, wich still puzzle everyone yet nobody really cares about finding about what they are. i mean, there are ruins in the woods near one of the biggest city, where you can just go and see pre-nuragic ruins still standing, totally unguarded. people go there to do picnics and bonfires like its nothing. their drunk asses on 4000 years of unkown history. i cant even

Some authors, like Pausanias and Sallust, reported that the Sardinians traced their descent back to a mythical ancestor, a Libyan son of Hercules or Makeris, related either to the Berber verb Imɣur "to grow", to the specific Kabyle word Maqqur "He is the greatest", or also associated with the figure of Melqart revered as a deity going by Sardus Pater Babai ("Sardinian Father" or "Father of the Sardinians"), who gave the island its name.
And that the ancient Nuragic Sards were associated with the Shardana who were one of the Sea Peoples.

Just a few thoughts here... Could the Shardana be related to the Tribe of Dan? The Tribe of Dan were a sea fairing people and supposedly they sailed throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. I've heard that some claim parts of the Tribe of Dan settled in Sardinia. Others say that a people known as the Tuatha Dé Danann who had invaded Ireland were associated with the Tribe of Dan. Also that Dan reached as far as Scandinavia, leaving their 'Mark' or 'Dan's Mark' founding the Kingdom of Denmark. Interesting that the Shardana wore helmets with horns, much like the Vikings of Scandinavia. Another group of people who settled in the Aegean Sea among the Mycenaeans were called 'Danoi” by Homer.
When the Tribes of Israel took the Land of Cannan, each tribe was given a portion of land, however the Danites did not take their share and they ventured north conquering the city of Laish and renamed it as the city of Tel Dan. The Danites were not only fierce warriors and great sailors, but they were also skilled craftsmen and were chosen to build the sacred Arc of the Covenant. But the Danites were shunned in the Bible for building a Temple in direct completion with Solomon's Temple as they worshiped false gods. The description of the Danites being great warriors, sailors, skilled craftsmen and pagans matches very closely to the Vikings of Scandinavia and to the Tuatha Dé Danann who invaded Ireland. The Mycenaeans who first appeared in the Aegean right after the time of the Exodus and around the Bronze Age Collapse called themselves Danoi. Many years ago, an Israeli archaeologist, Yigael Yadin, suggested a connection between the Danoi and the Israelite tribe of Dan.
The Denyen or Danuna were also one of the so-called "Sea Peoples" of Aegean origin who invaded Egypt as recorded by Ramses.
The Shardana, the Tuatha Dé Danann, the Danish, the Danoi and the Danuna all seem to have 'Dan' in their names. Maybe just a weird coincidence? maybe...
    Just some thoughts...

The battle of kadesh happened before the battle against the sea peoples. Kadesh took place under Ramses the second where the sea peoples at the Nile took place under Ramses the third. This is an important distinction I believe and adds reluctance to the biblical time periods.

  • @carlosaugustodinizgarcia3526

I think the sea peoples had different origins and their phenomena was a consequence of the collapse .
In Anatolia there was a civil war between the Hittites (with the royal house of Hattusa and a branch in Tarhuntassa).Probably the peoples ruled by the Hittites rebelled and as there was evidence of famine and new migrations (the Phrygians) they settleted elsewhere or just turned into piracy (sea peoples).
Around the same time there was the downfall of Mycenean Greece (by warfare between royal houses or by the Dorians, who knows?). Displaced people and new groups like Dorians also invaded the Aegean, occupying Crete and Cyprus.Others became sea peoples.

Could the Bronze Age collapse be connected to the Babylonian confusion? The Sea People were a federation of tribes with different languages and cultures. They destroyed all the local empires except Egypt. All major building projects stopped and a dark age began with no more writing for centuries. Might one assume these tribes settled in the lands of the former empires? That would create a patchwork of states like the Germanic kingdoms after the fall of Rome. Before they were absorbed into the local populace there must have been a great mix of new languages where there used to be a lingua franca and central power. Could the seed of the legend of the confusion be the invasion of the Sea People?

  • @josephatherton8757

I’m still unconvinced that agreed upon the Bronze Age collapse timeline is correct. All this could have taken place in the 1700’s BCE just as simple as the 1200’s. I’m Still leaning to no later than the 1400’s BCE because that lines up better to the more complete timeline of the Kings of Judah.

Looks to me like it was years of wars between various city states and famines that caused loads of tribes to leave their homelands and look for a better life elsewhere. Obviously they would come into conflict with other tribes end up victorious, assimilated or wiped out.

In fact it's more than likely that it was internal problems with tribes and uprisings by various cities citizen's that caused all the problems. Fantastic and informative lecture. I don't know if the lecturer is aware of the recent dna studies on Sardinia that are especially revelatory on the origin of the Nuragic Civilization.
It was discovered that a new Y-chromosome paternal haplogroup appears in Sardinia when the Nuragic civilization appears. This means it was an intrusive group of men that came into Sardinia that resulted in the appearance of the Nuraghi culture . This haplogroup is J2b-L283, which finds its highest frequency, and diversity today, in Albanians in the west balkans. Interestingly, some clades of this group also appear in some Jewish people, suggesting an ancient contact between Sardanians and Jews in the past, which further corroborates Shardana connection.
Further interesting that you mentioned Shardana fighting other horned helmet people in battle of Kadesh. In this battle, Dardanians and Mysians are mentioned as fighting alongside hittites, and they also have a balkanic origin like the Shardana possibly do if they went to Sardinia from West Balkans initially (although it is not known whether they may have travelled via the alps in North Italy).

Sicily was settled by the Sicils. Hence the name and the cognate for Shekelesh. When did they arrive? Circa 1200 BCE. What a surprise, right? They were part of this general movement of peoples in the Mediterranean all happening at the same time. Greeks or I should say people connected to the Aegean were the most signitficant, but certianly not the only ones on the move.

The home of the Sherden/Shardana has been argued by archaeologists and historians for decades. There is plenty of evidence to link the Sherden with the Nuragic culture of Sardinia. There is also plenty of evidence to link the Sherden with the Lydian kingdom and its capital, Sardis. However, there is also plenty of evidence, mainly dating and linguistic, that throws both of these hypotheses into doubt.
I have another idea, that links the historic, linguistic and archaeological evidence that might actually be the home of the Sherden, hiding in plain sight all along...
Many of the personal names listed in the various (Egyptian, Assyrian, Biblical, Hittite) records of Sherden leaders seem to be either Western Semitic (Phoenician) or Anatolian (Luwian) in origin. Sisera, for example, could be the Luwian name Zizuruwa, which is also the name of a Minoan God. During the era, of the Sea Peoples, between the 13th and 8th centuries BCE, there was a kingdom in the region of Cilicia, around modern cities of Adana and Tarsus (which is on the river, Sarus, with a local chief deity named Sandon), which was ruled by a Luwian-speaking ruling class and a Phoenician-speaking working class. The semi-mythical king, Mopsos (Mukšuš), was an early leader of this kingdom. There are many bilingual Luwian-Phoenician inscriptions found in the area attesting to this society. It was generally understood that these people must be the sea peoples called the “Denyen”, based on an apparent (but mistaken) similarity to the name of the city, Adana. But most historians believe that “Denyen” refers to the Danaäon Greeks. I strongly believe that this Luwian/Phoenician kingdom, with its capital, Tarsus, on the Sarus River, and its chief deity named Sandon, is the true, albeit temporary, home of the “People of Sherden/Shardana”. They raided the Mediterranean for five centuries, fighting as mercenaries alongside (variously) the Egyptians, Philistines, Trojans (of Wilusa), Hittites and Greeks.... often on both sides of a battle. The established cities in Northern Israel, Egypt, and eventually establish the Nuragic civilisation and gave their name to the Island of Sardinia.

Christianity brought us the printing press then democracy and finally the internet. its interesting lol. there are ancient records of people in north America being called Ethiopian and small clues that hint that Celts and others could have made it to south America we know they went to Africa. when the jews first came to Jericho what they started. secret society are vary real and have origins in ancient times.

As far as I know, the skin colour of people in Ancient Egypt varied. There’s an earlier video on this channel about it (something like ‘Was Cleopatra Black?’). Pretty much, from what I remember of the video, skin colour didn’t determine race, there were other factors considered more important during that time period (though this summary may have been from a different video - there were a couple of similar ones released about the same time I think).

1st, you have a mistake. The Bible doesn't use the term Philistines for other sea people only with a connection to them.
Now, you failed to reach the ultimate goal: where are they in the table of nations? So, I will tell you: they were the Caphtorites who gave their name to Crete (Caphtor) from which came the Philistines who settled there, after Sherden migrated to Sardinia. Both of them had close ties before and were descendents of Egyptians.
