  • UPDATE BELOW
Problem: My 03 BMW Z4 3.0L 6 speed manual was randomly shutting off / stalling / dying on me at lower speeds in variable gears. It happened about every other drive and at least once weekly until I eventually parked the car until fixed. I noticed it happens when I am in lower rpms and just coming off the gas, the car gives hesitation as if it is not getting fuel/air. It felt like misfiring but no codes present.
Previous Attempted Fixes (did not help): My fuel pump was replaced earlier in the year so I did not feel that was my issue. I checked the MAF which looked clean and blew it with electronic compressed gas. After initial research, many people had similar issues to me and replacing the Camshaft Position Sensor Intake Side solved their issue. I replaced both my Camshaft Position Sensors (Intake and Exhaust) with OEM brand but the problem persisted. Also cleaned EGR secondary valve.
UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED - for me my issue was a bad Crankshaft position sensor (see other video). The Camshaft position sensor intake side was a major reported issue so be sure to at least look into both. For me, My crankshaft sensor plug was covered in oil from who knows where. I found no leaks on my engine so I imagine it was there from a long time ago (I have replaced many valves and seals since buying the car).

Yeah thanks mate I tried the ICV & yes it was full of carbon so cheers for this video, it definitely needed to be done , but my problem wasn’t the engine cutting out like yours , My Z4 is running perfect except at idle when putting foot on the brake , the revs increase from 800 to 1200 then back, once the brake pedal is released .?
weird stuff, & I’ve being trying to diagnose it for a while watching videos & I think yours sounded maybe like the PCV/CCV valve ?? , a way to tell is see if there’s any suction while removing the oil filler cap when the engine is idling .. apparently if there is suction then the Valve is stuffed.
Anyway Good-luck if I see your problem pop up in my searching I’ll handball you the link .. cheers mate.

Thanks mate. My problem ended up being the crankshaft position sensor if I recall correctly.

That problem you talk about where pressing the brake pedal increases the revs is exactly what mine does. Did you ever find out what the problem was mate?

I have the same rev rise brake switch electrical issue, definately not a vacuum issue, 800 to 1200 rpm rise ..
did you find the cause of this issue ?

Hi, mine it moving back and fort means its clean. But mine is doing a misfire and only gets up to 2000 rpm and hits back down to 0. And stalls out. Eml light is on. No codes. Pls help if you have had that experience.
