Matt Mercer is one of the most well-known DMs in the world. He has a ton of aspirational qualities that many DMs and GMs could emulate. But I want to discuss one specific aspect of his game.

Great topic. Would love to see you cover other DM/GM's. Like a series, do Brennan Lee Mulligan next!
I second this. Brennan Lee Mulligan would be a good one to do next.
I third this!
Good to know! Based on the response to this video thus far I think I'll do another one.
Yes yes yes. Also don’t forget the less…classically theatrically trained DMs. (Dungeon Dudes Drakenhiem) Will showcase how a good DM may look more like at your table where no one has improve or theater training.
@@DigDoug56 great point!
This was great. Would love to see a Matthew Colville video!
Matt is a great voice actor. He's a good DM. His players are what make Matt look so good. They are all professional voice actors putting on a performance, and they play in a very respectful manner. So I agree that it's over hyped.
Knowing your party's abilities is key to properly challenging them. Otherwise combats are too easy or way too hard (like you said, dues ex machina). In lockstep with that, is knowing how your players play their characters. Not everyone plays optimally.
Letting the chips fall where they may is difficult, especially when the players are supposed to be challenged. I try hard not to fudge, but I do prevent TPKs that would end the campaign.
I agree that Matt's players are exceptional. But I think it is a two way street. Matt respects them and their characters, and in turn they respect him and his story. But that's just my read on the table.
@@TheGeekPantheon - CR would not be anywhere near as successful if the players were typical players.
@@sleepinggiant4062 you do realize that most of his players learned how to play from Matt, right? 5 out of 7 of them had Matt as their first DM and even for the other 2 he was a big influence. for 4 of them (Ashley, Laura, Travis, Sam) their VM characters were their first RP character ever. they were in no way experienced players when they started to play with Matt. I'm watching c1 right now and you can clearly see how much better they got with Matt's guidence as they went along. not to say that it's all Matt's doing since the players have to be receptive to the guidence and have mutual respect with him and each other that comes from acting, but the idea that they became the players they are today independent of Matt's DM style is pretty wild.
@@esgaril - They are professional voice actors, so no Matt did not teach them how to roleplay. He taught them how to play D&D, as in the mechanics. They already knew how to act, and are extremely respectful to each others craft - making them great players.
@@sleepinggiant4062 acting is not the same as playing a roleplaying game and being good actors is not what make them good players. but sure, you can stay in denial if you want, I'm sure they just pretended to be not as good at the beginning of c1 for whatever reason you can dream up to convince yourself that it has nothing to do with Matt having to nudge them in a more serious and respectful direction
Ahh this is great!
Thanks!
