  • FULL MUSTANG V 370Z COMPARO @ INSIDELINE.COM:
    www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/...
When we last left the 2009 Nissan 370Z, it had just laid a drubbing on BMW's little 135i. We then proclaimed, "The 2009 Nissan 370Z raises the standard for the sport coupe segment to a new level of affordable excellence."
Time to get more serious. It's V8 time. Who's in? Let's see, no Camaro, and a Challenger is not available (don't ask), so that leaves the freshly updated 2010 Ford Mustang GT, a car whose very existence is predicated upon wallet-friendly performance.
Perhaps a reinvigorated veteran can take down the newly crowned king. The particulars might differ - four seats versus two, V8 versus V6 - but the mission is the same. And the 2009 Nissan 370Z and 2010 Ford Mustang GT are priced closer than you might think.

after owning the 370z for a year now...i must say is very reliable no problem at all!! it has some problems with visibility a lot of blind spots and it would need an oil cooler if you are going to track it. You should also have a second car for daily driving because is almost impossible to drive it slow the car handles so so great that going for lunch transforms into a track day. I have it with the sport pack the brakes are pure magic and the rev-match feature will make u drive like Schumacher.

I remember those days, back when imports out performed the domestics in their class. Sadly imports have not kept pace with the performance of domestics in their price range. Example: STi and Evo vs Camaro and Mustang. Used to be an Evo or STi was the performance bargain. Now neither compares well to a GT 5.0, Boss, or Camaro 1LE.

I think the Japanese market is not particularly concerned with American muscle anymore if I'm being honest. In interviews, Nissan has said that their performance benchmark for the 370z was a Porsche Cayman and for the GT-R it was a Porsche 911 Turbo. They are either obsessed with Porsche, or focusing their effort on the European market instead.

It's 2024 and both of these cars have aged like fine wine. I daily a 2017 370Z and love it to death. It feels like I'm driving a classic car because of how stripped down and raw feeling it is. The Mustangs of this time were the same way. When you sit down in either of these cars, you are transported back to a time before technology completely took over. The magic of analog sports cars is that they become more relevant the less relevant they become.

They can corner (especially compared to previous generations), they're just not really good at it. The V8 engine is very forgiving if you get things wrong because unlike the Z it has a little bit of low-end torque. You've gotta get the Z up to 3000 RPM before it puts out anything, so it's a good thing it is a real champ at maintaining speed through corners.

I have a 2019 370Z 6MT with the sport pkg that I took for a quick drive on the California coastal US 1 down from the Oregon border to the SF bay area, where I live. I encountered a late model Mustang GT(2018 or 2019) and we dueled it out on the twisty two-lane road. The Stang was ahead of me and so I used him as a pace car and had no trouble sticking to his tail. My car had power and handling potential in reserve, so I could have beaten him but elected not to push it on a road that had oncoming traffic to the left and cliffs over the Pacific ocean on the right. It was then that I really appreciated the handling performance of the car with its relatively light weight. Even though the Mustang had more hp, he was unable to use it fully for most of the drive because of his car's heavier weight. Later on, I think he may have been developing brake fade from repeated high speed braking around all the curves.

@mine1username I mostly agree with your statement. I owned and drag raced a 99 GT, thus the name, for years and NA it was not a threat at all. Where it did have its benefits was good flowing heads and low compression made it great for FI. I ran a Vortech V2 S-trim at 10-12 psi for years and then moved to a T76 turbo system. The ringlands and rods didn't like it for long. Getting a built 2V/3V block was/is inexpensive. The Coyote 5.0 is an incredible engine without question though.

@MrNoclutch I agree 100%. I remember when I bought my 99 GT auto in December of 98 when they first came out. Ford did a smart thing by selling cars and letting the aftermarket do the rest. Sure the 350Z and 370Z might have been slightly quicker, but Ford sold more Mustangs than Nissan could dream of selling Zs. It is not always about performance off of the lot as GM learned with the LS1 Camaros and Firebirds. Some mods later and my 99 GT was in the 10s on 93 octane. Great platform to build on.

Problem is, the following year Ford swapped out the tired old 4.6L 3V for a fire breathing 5.0L TiVCT 4V and gave the car 100 extra horsepower....and made some suspension tweaks. The Nissan 370Z hasnt been able to hold a candle to is since.

Compare the same two cars after 7 years of normal use. The Z will still be in great shape, but the Mustang, not so much. American car manufacturers need to get with the program and start building more fuel efficient engines that produce more horsepower. I have a 2009 370Z Touring. If I drive the limit and don't wind out the gears, on the highway I have gotten 30mpg, and yet it can run 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds. This is all from a V6.

2 seconds is a lot in a race. I understand the engineering in both cars. For I own a Ford and a Nissan. Not that many people can attest to that and the uninformed tend to underestimate the capabilities of a mustang. You can jump into a Nissan and instantly become a veteran racer. A mustang is like taming a wild beast. It has a learning curb that takes a little time to adapt. Once you do, turns or not you can take on a 370 easy. To solidify that race just throw a pair of wide sticking tires on the back. Then it won't even be a race

@loucks428 I believe it. I just bypassed a leaking heater core on a Town car that had 288,XXX and it idles like stock. No smoke out of the tailpipe or hunting idle. People have no idea about the reliability of the 4.6l and the amount of abuse they take. I see them in Econoline E250 work vans with 185K and 200K after carrying heavy equipment and parts for HVAC guys and plumbers. Not the most power N/A, but can take abuse for well over 100K.

@DVcustomZ I have to agree 100% with that comment. I find Mustangs with flowmasters annoying and I personally hate those mufflers. I ran a Borla cat-back on my 99 GT. I spent alot of money on my 99 GT back in 2000 going from NA, Vortech V2-S-trim running low 12s to a Turbonetics T-76 running 10s on 93 octane. A Turbo V8 is deadly because spooling a T-76 didn't take long especially with a BB Turbo. I need another turbo V8.

@therookie93, Ford response about the live axle was that " an upgrade would have risen the price of each car by 5000 bucks". Now if you have over 300 Horsepower, you can lose just about any sports car coming out of a corner..

I agree. Put the new v6 stang against the 370z.. those two are the same class. New GT is on par with a M3 now.. plus its a 5.0, the GT in the video is a 315hp 2010.. not the 2011 5.0 which has 412hp :D and for those who say certain cars aren't reliable.. NO car is reliable, in reality that's just people who are broke or too cheap to go do regular maintenance who say that.. lets face it guys that oil isn't going to change itself. I have a 06 Stang and have never had one problem since day 1.

yes, the turns. i love the massive power of the mustang. but it's only good for the first 5 seconds on the straight line. but when you drive a sports car with better handling, you can enjoy driving constantly around the corner. that's why mazda miata's are so popular among driver enthusiasts. it's low powered and small, but it's one hell of a ride in corners.

@undeadkillers A live rear axle has very little impact on a vehicle's handling on a smooth track or a skidpad. However, it does come into play on the street, where midcorner bumps upset the rear end.

@runamoktoo Sorry, I ran out of space. The video on here with the BMW is called "super coupes track attack." Anyway, I'm really not trying to be confrontational. The 370Z is a fine vehicle and I'd jump on it if I had a chance to own one, but I personally think the mustang is a slightly better choice, especially considering it's cost compared to the nissan's. And with that lower price tag you still get more horsepower and beter track numbers. I hope that helped.

@lockheed08 Talking about "giving credit where it is deserved".. For your information, the 3-valve SOHC 4.6 has made it to Ward's 10 Best Engines list from 2005 thru 2008. The 4.6 power is widely conservative in its stock form. I easily cranked mine up to 350hp. I'm 4.8 sec to 60mph. It is extremely reliable (zero issues after 4 years of hard driving) and sounds like a muscle car in meaner ways than the 5.0. Just because you don't get the joke doesn't mean that it is necessarily bad.

All in what you want. Brute Force vs. Precision handling. By all accounts, Ford has come a long way with their new suspension, but the reason the Z can run with the more powerful GT is because it's 500 lbs less. The Mustang coupe weighs the same as a fully loaded Nissan Maxima sedan.
I'm a Nissan fan, but I'm considering a 302 Boss. As far as 2 door with rear seat performance though, I'm also looking at a third option... BMW 1 series M Coupe. Yummy.

@Wowmasta21 Exactly proved a point too, GTR is much heavier due to the fact that it has an AWD system, who said the ZR1 has better handling? I'll admit at a time ZR1 did have better handling, but it's 2011, GTR got a major redesign, slaloms at 74 mph, and skid pad ratings at 1.02g's. Two really great cars that accomplished a lot of things, beating out Ferraris and Porsches.

@TheMackSparrow I disagree slightly. What most people forget is that GT stands for Grand Touring, something we have lost in the US. This is a totally new Mustang, and is more close to a proper European touring car than a proper muscle car. People in the US will still drive the GT like a muscle car, because it's hard to re-learn 50 years of society. When you understand what grand touring is all about, this comparison makes perfect sense.

your right that its in the middle of the two but a v6 with a turbo or supercharged can compete with the 370 on a straight. and its not that much money to get it supercharged. but yea the live rear axle on the mustang is what makes it not able to handle curvy roads as well unless they were completely smooth. i think both cars are amazing. haha i have a 2013 gt so of course im gonna lean towards the mustang :)

I was addressing the comment about live axle being a handicap. Reviewers like the cheaper GT as a driver's car too. They're surprised, live axle isn't that bad. Not worth arguing. Live axle will be dead by 2015 anyway. I think, car comparisons will always piss someone off. But, each car has it's merits and faults. Most of these cars have been around so long and have been so perfected, reviewers are now tempted to compare very dissimilar models like Miata and Shelby. Truth? They're all good cars

Straight line performance the 2011 V6 is on par with the STi. The brand new 5.0 isn't even a comparison, it's domination. Both the V6 and the V8 walk the STi at the tract too.

  • @DoomsdayMelody91
    @DoomsdayMelody91 Před 11 lety

in a straight line, yes. Keep in mind I am a Mustang Fan, but as far as handling goes, you'd need a Boss 302 to keep up with that Z through the turns.

  • @Marc99GT

I notice that the 13.1 was posted but not the trapseed. that makes a difference as to how quickly that spread is growing. Also I would be interested in seeing the price as tested. That would also indicated that the 2011 GT would hit 60 in about 4.3 seconds.
To bad the car stated as more for drag racing would have no problem beating the 370Z around a course. The Boss 302 is a destroyer on the track at 43K and with a sold axle. I certainly would never put a 370Z and a 911 in the same sentence.

i never test drove the 370z until just 3 days ago .people that like this car either haven't driven German or just don't know about cars. when i drove it, I did not feel confident in its abilities, and I think the main reason for this is the lack of visibility. It also doesn't feel as quality as Audi and BMW which I have driven. It tries to imitate them by a rough ride and heavy steering but that is not what makes them

@kazuyajap impressive! And did YOU know that nissan's vq engine made Ward's list from 1995-2008? That's a whole DECADE more. It is also very easy to get a Z up to 350hp, since it does after all come with 330 stock(the nismo will give you 350 stock). And a stock z will also match your 0-60 time no problem ... so try again

  • @Marc99GT

@DVcustomZ You also have to remember that you are down over 100 lb-ft of torque due to the smaller engine which makes a significant difference. Both making similar PEAK hp, but the other making much more peak and average torque. You tell me which car is quicker after every shift abd out of the gate.
