New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten and our toddler Puck on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Two years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home. Want to see more updates? Don't forget to subscribe!

Bonjour from France.....
Cover the base of your trees with rocks ( as close as possible the rocks must not touch) the morning dew will rundown and add some water the trees
I’ve read that in the heat rocks too close can hurt the roots of young trees. We have a few where Maarten made a little ring around them to keep water from flowing down the hill and those trees don’t look so good... Might also be a coincidence
@@ourportuguesehomestead To retain water, the best thing is the use of expanded perlite.
Hello! Welcome to Portugal! Be happy in our little and beautyful country. Amazing your land and all progresses. We say "quinta" or "herdade" in the south.
Both work hard every day and your kids are lovely. God bless you.
Some goats will help you to keep your area clean.
Kisses and hugs 🇵🇹
I liked the tractor joke at the start,, good humor :-)
You've worked so hard and what a blessing you've created ....glad the garden is your happy place its mine too
I’m so amazed with how well it’s going this year
@@ourportuguesehomestead you look after the land and the land will look after you.
Quinces are used here very much for making syrup and jelly as well as jam. It takes time to cook them, but they are delicious. We also cook pieces of it in water with a a little sugar until soft and then cool it. So refreshing, both the fruit pieces and the liquid!
Can’t wait till they’re done :)
Here in Indiana usa the old time farmers fence hogs into an area that they dug a pond. The pigs compact it . I am a city girl , it doesn't make sense to me because pigs make a mess out of dirt but that is what they say. I love your plans and you have created a beautiful homestead ❣️
I've heard that as well! Never tried it though
@@ourportuguesehomestead 💐
You worked so hard to achieve what it is very nice
Hello Leah and Maarten and kids there will always be something to finish on the property. Hope you will have a good olive year. Have a great week. Greetings Shanna
you have really accomplished so much. The work is forever and the little ones remind you that you can do a little every day. We don't see the progress as we are bystanders, but seeing your excitement each week is endearing. I was so happy along with you to get the washing machine and the fridge, so there it is, one day at a time. Congratulations on a job really well done. I hope that Puck still be able to go to the school in the village I'll be staying tuned. Annmarie Oregon USA
Have followed since the beginning. Marvellous to see the progress over two years.
Yes I remember :)
Towards the end of this video when you did the panorama shot of the surrounding mountains nearby that was a really beautiful view from your property. You can feel the peace of your place from these video's you share.
The view is so stunning up there!
Love the hair cut and love your little mini me!!
Thank you, that was a wonderful tour. I thought your land was more than 4 hectares, but now I understand why I thought that. The diversity in the geography, as well as biology is amazing. I think you picked a wonderful place to build your homestead. A lot of work yes, but it is a glorious location. Thank you again for the video.
Yes really amazing how many different microclimates we have on the land here. Creates lots of opportunity :)
"It's a very busy path, there's at least one tractor every week" :D
Yesterday there was even a car!
Hahaha🤣
Congratulations you have found paradise 👍
Thanks for the tour Lea . it reminds of my own piece of heaven down south in Alentejo . Take care guys .
Hope you get to go back soon!
Very enjoyable, Thankyou.
Love the idea to build a earthbag house. I watch a lot of videos from my little homestead. They've build lots of earthbag structures for the whole family. You did a very good job on your property! Thanks for the tour! 🌷
Great tour. Appreciate the attention you paid to explaining the topography. 🇨🇦
Happy landiversary! You guys are great!! :) All the best for many more years of happiness :)
Yes a pond would add on more beautiful to your land. I would love to have a pond in our back yard...someday. your family has almost all you need fruits trees is a big plus! Love it
Thank you for a wonderful tour of your quinta/homestead! I missed seeing more of your adorable, ever present co-host, Puck. Continued good wishes on your family’s journey.
Beautiful land, thanks for showing! That area behind the yurt, what a view! Maybe another project is to make a seat to enjoy it?! I will try to keep some pallets for you when I spot them! Boa semana!
I see a lot of progress... because I know how full of brambles your land must have been when you first got there! And they spread pretty fast if you don't keep cutting them back. Still, if they're fruiting, they can also be a resource for preserves in your pantry. 🙂
When I was a child, my parents had a 76 acre farm, and 10 acres of that was raspberries (I don't know how many hectares this is). Yes, it was a lot of work, but it provided us with jam/preserves and a little money too (people paid to come pick fruit).
It's a lot drier there in Portugal, so probably not feasible to get goats & other ruminants because your water source is limited. Cows, especially, can drink a lot of water each day. You're right to limit the number of animals you bring to your property, at least until there is much more water. Your well is spring fed, though, which means there is water running underground, so there's a possibility there of discovering other springs & capturing new water sources. People today mostly don't know how that's done, but there are ways to do that. 🙂
You have many years to develop your land, it isn't going to all happen at once. 😁 I had a garden that took me 8 years to get the soil into the condition I wanted it to be... it was built on very rocky land that had almost no topsoil. People thought I was crazy, until my garden finally started producing, and then all the neighbors started building gardens too. Haha 😂 Everybody has an opinion, you know, but you keep building on your ideas and you will succeed in creating your own little bit of Eden there. 💚
2.46 acres = 1ha..... 10 acres= 4.05ha
Goats, sheeps and cows are very common in the region where they live. Beira Baixa region can be very hot and dry from May to October, but this region is very rich in water sources too. the last couple of years was good in terms of rain, but it can be very difficult when you get 2 or 3 years almost without rain... it happens here from time to time....
Excellent work , everyone is doing really well . I raise my hat in total respect to all the family , little co,hosts included . Keep going , never give up , onward and upwards . Best wishes from GB . . ONE Amazing family . .
The beautiful property... With spectacular views over the mountains. When they finish, I bet it will be amazing...
Keep up the good work and Martin and your family stay safe and strong
How lovely to see Bo he is so much like Puck it is easy to tell they are siblings only the hair colours so different
I am so happy to see this amazing episode of nature...

Hello from northern canada
Thank you! Love your little co-host!
Me too, but I'm biased of course ;)
Lots of hard work..
Such relaxing and interesting videos to watch your lives there - thank you! A lot of progress is evident in two years. Blessings.
You're the coolest expats couple in Portugal and the toddler is the star of your videos!!!
If you want to spare water, transform some old dead trees in to woodchips. It keeps the moist in the ground, and it even can filter some parts of your gray water. It also slowly breaks down into nutrition.
Such an amazing workload to have achieved. Best wishes for your garden.
Wow what a beautiful place, it's almost magical. I've looked for land in Portugal, the truth is I don't think I'm well enough to take care of it. I love living vicariously through the CZcams channels though, and yours is one of the ones I've been following studiously. Thank you for sharing your videos with us, Jimmy
We’re happy to share, thanks for watching :)
Thanks for the tour. Have a lovely week ahead.
I just started looking at your property and yes you have done so much and the progress and wow thank you so much

Its beautiful, and you are so blessed ,living the dream❤a lemon tree and orange tree, would go well with all your other goodies 😍😁❤
Great to see the progress. Lovely place.
I love how you convinced yourself on the roof over the privy. Hahaha awesome jobs looking great 👍
Bentonite clay is good for sealing ponds. In the states you can get it from distributors if you can get it down your road.
Beautiful overview of your land 😆 keep up the amazing work and giving your children a wonderful future 👍🏽 bless you all ❤️
These strange apples are MARMELOS (quinces), peeled you can make MARMELADA (marmelade quince) and with the peels and seeds you can make GELEIA DE MARMELO (quince jelly).
Great video and can’t wait for the earth bag house
Thanks for another great video. You and your family have done so well in the last two years. It such a pleasure to follow your daily lives, especially while we've been in lock-down here in the UK. Looking forward to you finishing your next project, stay well stay safe, regards, Hugh and Kirsty
A Very Beautiful Homestead Video.
Awesome! Great video!
You and your family are remarkable and you are blessed with nature.

Looks a beautiful life away from this rat race. Ik wens jullie veel succes voor het toekomst, groetjes uit Engeland !
Great work
Hi, love watching you and Martin workig hard and having babies, great 😁🙂. Watchig your 2 year tour, you described quinta trees. In Portuguese a quinta is a homestad/ farm . Those bitter fruits are called quince in English and marmelo in Portuguese . Love your ideology ,good luck e saude 👍
Lea is actually saying quince with a Dutch accent sounds like kinser so not quinta.
@@jeannestott1456 Thank you for puting me straight Jeanne ,I feel like a naughty little boy now 😳☹
GREAT job 👍
The baby is so beautiful and grown up! Thanks for the great vídeo! Happy week.😅
And so heavy! He weighted 7 kg already at the doctor's last week...
Beautiful I love the view🙏🏾
I enjoyed your tour. It is great to see that all th had work paying off. IT'S AS dry as can be out here it the western desert. But our monsoon as the locs call it is back. So it alleviates the dry some.
This region is also slowly becoming desert so I know the feeling. Hope you can catch some rain when it falls :)
Is it beautiful ❤️ and you work hard. God blessed 🙏💟
I always love watching your Homestead grow..You are such hard workers.
You can eat quince/ kweper in Afrikaans, But wow the after taste feels like your mouth has a funny feeling..We have alot in Cape Town, South Africa
morrrrrrring hard work so das live,
het woord een mooi plaatsje groetjes uit Zeeland
cool stuff very enjoyable great to see and hear ....
Hi. Great video! See you next week.
Quince can also put in the oven and it’s delicious cook them until soft. The pips and skin have a lot of jelly which they use to make Turkish delight with. Great work you have done well. Wishing you always the very best.🙏🌷💕
Thanks! I didn't know that about the pips and Turkish delight, but makes perfect sense with their "jellyness"
Thank you.
Lovely place.
Lea, I discovered your channel a few weeks ago, and I have binge-watched all the episodes, looking forward to my evenings when I watch you and your lovely family. Maarten is wonderful, always working, trying meet the diverse needs of a family. Your children are gorgeous. Love watching Louis, especially when he seems to be searching for a necklace he has lost ! Sissy is an old lady, who appears to love her peace. We don’t see much of the cats. Miss Mr Hank, but he got above himself. Lovely chickens.
Will be curious to see your grape harvest, and the bounty from the orchard.
Brilliant work. I shall be rooting for you all the way. I have already spoken to some friends about you.
Take good care of yourselves.
What a wonderful summary of our life and crew here :) You seem to have watched it all in a vert short time, happy to hear you enjoyed it.
I’m very excited to see the grape harvest myself, wine making should be a fun project (and end result)
Lovely.
Very cool
Doing well. Those olive trees look lovely but they are a tough tree. I still remember the scratches moving dried branches. The garden is very special.
Olive are really hard to kill, very resilient
I’ll be fallowing your vlog as you improve your place.
Your doing so great!
Very interesting
Thank you for the tour. It seems that you & Maarten have thought about the longevity of your property & use it to its full potential. I am going to have to watch your video on your thoughts on self-sufficiency. If you are not working towards it, then, I have missed something. Lovely to see Bo. Adorable!
It is our goal to an extend, but community sufficiency has been on my mind a lot lately. It's a video from last year: czcams.com/video/mA2EIuU1PnY/video.html
@@ourportuguesehomestead Thank you.
Very good job!!!👏👏👏👍❤️
Having just survived the Great Heat Dome, I do hope you stick with your idea of earth sheltering part of your house. The difference between the basement and the main floor in 45 degree heat here was tremendous. The basement remained livable.
That looked really scary! We can get 45 degrees here as well on occasion, and it will only happen more I think. Glad to hear you had a cooler place to stay
Excellent 💪
You can use the silt from the bottom of the well as fertiliser
hello leah---thank you for this tour. just want to say you and marteen should be proud of the work you are doing ,and the sacrifices you make for your home and farm. --don't say sorry about anything that is unfinished--i think its the best i ve watched on utube--others have lots of money and everybody helping--thats not what its' about---hooray for you and marteen and the little ones---your friend deatra
Thanks Deatra :)
You will soon reap the fruits of your labor. God Bless !
Beautiful
your baby is beautiful the farm is certainly taking shape
Thanks! We started harvesting some of the golden nugget tomatoes you sent us, very nice. Puck loves them :)
Nice property! It's good that you have ur own water sources! I'd like to see more of the vineyard as I've heard that the plants are shorter on hot climates, but the fruit are big. The little one looks so cute. He looks so much like Marteen! :)
The vineyard is on a seperate property, hope to go there again soon to show the grapes :)
It looks more like my village. Minus the olive trees
Cheers.
The farm is looking so good! Have a parcel for you when I get back!
Thanks! Have a safe trip back :)
I posted earlier how to become water independent even if your well spring dries up.
I think I would like a roof before anything else on the toilet!
Somehow it’s not been a priority for us 😅 Won’t rain for a while now, so hopefully we get it done by fall
I will be the first one to see this video 🌹🌹🌹
I will come and visit your homestead someday
