    New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten, our daughter Puck and toddler Bo on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Five years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home.

    I love how Bo was not amused at being on camera 😂😂. Your land is so big, I can't get over how much everything has grown since it was strimmed. Well done on the tour by the way.

    We hebben tenslotte een beslissing genomen om te vertrekken en een nieuwe uitdaging aan te gaan. En ons leven radicaal om te gooien. Ik heb nog geen dag spijt van dat ik ben vertrokken. Genieten van elke dag. Ik ben trots op jullie.

    I loved the tour and I related with several things you spoke and explain. I love seeing you in your videos and the way you live life. I know this is only an online video effect (didn't find better words for it), but I feel as I know you already! Of course if I would cross with you in real life it would be strange and even awkward (I'm a shy and introverted person). 😅 I could write here forever so I'll end it here. Thank you so much for sharing......I can't believe it's 5 years already! Feels like just yesterday watching the yurt, outdoor kitchen & shed going up. Interestingly enough, you are not the only Portuguese homesteader who thinks that the fertiliser/compost was inferior - resulting in not so good crops this year. Also, how many fox attacks on chickens.....
    Cannot wait to see what you guys have planned.

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  Před 2 měsíci +1

      That is interesting! One of the reasons I was apprehensive about raised beds and no dig is not being able to get good compost, and annoyingly that turned out to be true. I'll get a different brand next time. We lost 4 chickens this spring, she took them very quietly one by one while they were free ranging.

    Make a fertilizer with 1 gallon of water and banana peel, overnight, then throw the peel away, pur evenly to all your tomatoes once a month, your tomatoes will flourish, potatoes love it too, it's potasium, also wood ash helps soil, in the Spring, like manure, BEFORE The growing Season, not too much of either so you don't burn the plant or trees,

    Hi guys. To answer the unasked question: the reason you used white in the kitchens were due to them using whitewash from at least the middleage and up till a few centuries ago. Whitewashing kills germs and bacteria and reduces most viral spread. It also made everything look cleaner when you'd lightly wash over a dirty area and the basic nature of the lime would come into play. Greetings from Denmark

  • @SiviVolk2
    @SiviVolk2 Před měsícem

    For the pond, you probably need only a simple contraption to prevent water from draining out. In my mind you only need a high enough vertical concrete pipe cemented to the stone pipe that fills your pond. That way, when the pressure of water in the stone pipe is high enough, water can flow overflow out of the top of the pipe and into the pond. But, when the pressure in the stone pipe drops and the water dries up, the vertical pipe will prevent all the water from draining. A bit like putting a pipe in your sink drain to prevent it from fully draining
    Hope it makes sense, otherwise I can add a sketch next time :)

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  Před měsícem +1

      I understand what you mean, but I don't think it'll work. We've tried to plug the hole with cement before and the water just found a way around. It would be the same with a pipe.

    • @SiviVolk2
      @SiviVolk2 Před měsícem

      @@ourportuguesehomestead I see, quite a complicated situation apparently. It might be worth trying still as the water can easily break the cement when the pressure builds up in the underground tube, but the pressure is quite small he other when the water flows way around (pressure in the pond is small). I am of course guessing here and who knows. Good luck anways :)

      Goats eat almost everything - and are very good at getting into vegetable gardens. Also, keeping animals through the long hot and dry summer is not easy.

      Thanks, but as I said in the video we don't want that kind of commitment right now. Too many people take in animals that they cannot care for properly. This land is too dry for a cow and goats are too much work.

      The coast is quite far for us, so we don’t really go there. But we really enjoy going to different river beaches here in the interior 😊
