@@InkquiringMinds I just received my M800, but went with purple, which I like, but amber was a strong option. However, I didn't have a purple pen yet, so that swayed the choice. Waiting on a new ink, coming Monday to ink it, and try it out. Like the section better than I thought I would, so might get another one. The purple is just like amber, but in purple, so itvhas all those streaks, and is translucent. Overall a great resin. Enjoying it a lot.
Looks like I need to branch out from my C1 to the M800. It looks stunning! I actually like Moonman nibs after some tweaking. Before tweaking it never gave me any problems it was just a little dry and had too much feedback for my liking. Anyways, great video!
Can you guys give some advice for nib tuning? Should I just get some micromesh for scratchiness? Realign the feed to make it more dry/wet? I never thought a micromesh would help and I'm wondering if you guys have tips
@@tristansalem3 I got some 10k and 12k micromash on ebay from a guitar equipment supplier and it worked well, not yet daring to try courser grit yet, but I've seen Chris Rap use them. As for the tricks with fill gauges, I got one on Ali Express but I'm not yet seeing a need for it. I've so far had good experiences using brass shims (also for a few $ for a 1m role that will last me a lifetime), I use them for both cleaning the slit and pulling tines sideways to make the nib wetter.
Thanks Doug!! I think this shows that the issues are more the nib than the feed. I.C. will be happy to hear I fixed and reinstalled one of my penbbs 308 nibs, so now have a spare goulet to use in a moonman! One minor correction in your video, only the twsbi vac 700 comes with a number 6 nib, the eco is number 5 and the 580 is a in between, often called a 5.5, i wouldnt worry though since a replacement vac 700 section is more expensive than the other options. Keep up the great videos!
One thing i found with moonman nibs is they write perfectly in reverse. I have a ranga 5 that i drilled out and jamned in a moonman silver nib housing. I primarily write with it upside down. I’ll use the normal nib orientation for bolder titles. With the 6ml ink capacity and the EF line I’ve never refilled it.
Hi Doug, I have original momento zeros and four moonman m800's (in each colour) with both Bock and moonman nibs. I am a nibsmith as a hobby and once each pen was completed they all write incredibly well. The Bocks needed help just as much as the moonmans in order to meet my standards.. Thanks for the review
I have 3 m800's and swapped out all 3nibs for Nemosine nibs. No complaints. Doug thanks for the in-depth review. I wouldn't but the Monto Zero because I would be afraid of misplacing it.

@@InkquiringMinds The previous two M800 videos convince me to give one a try, as I wasn't sure of that section by just looking at pictures of it. Much more benign slope in hand. I think it will be fine. If the Moonman nib won't perform, then I have a PenBBS RM in a keychain caddy, so that could get swapped in. I have a Nemosine stub lying around as well, so there are options, although I do like the Moonman nibs when they work.
My M800 Amber is here. I swapped a Penbbs steel "F" nib into it. It looks really great. I don't know how to share a pic here. Otherwise I can show you.
There were allot of problems with viscontis a while ago. I think they are Jowo nibs now, I have been considering, the price and magnetic closure keep me away.
@@InkquiringMinds I will take look and see if I can find the weblink, for a period SBRE Brown and others were reporting issues, following which a change was made. At this point unfortunately there is alot of nib purchasing from Jowo and Bock, which limits the writing experience a bit.

Interesting. I have a Moonman T1 and it is probably the best nib in my collection. Super smooth. Better than several pens I own in the 80 dollar range.
Thanks for sharing! I've had a couple of Moonman #6 nibs that have written well. My Moonman C1 was excellent out of the box. I guess my dismay has been the number of duds compared to Penbbs.

I agree with the you 100% although a few times I only purchase the inexpensive one as a gift, for a prop etc but I too get less expensive one AND the full price one.
Hi Doug, I like the green though, very wise choice. A great colour match would be Diamine Sherwood Green (my fav green haha). My latest pen acquisition has disappeared between the United States and Australia, it left Hong Kong and seemed to have disappeared in the Indian Ocean somewhere :(
Another wonderful video, Doug! I have the M800 and M600S in green and love them both. The 600S came with a 2 tone Moonman medium nib that is great! following your lead, I replaced the Moonman fine on the M800 with a Goulet fine from a Jinhao 159 and it was a great swap. Thanks for the idea!! Ebay must not like me as I did not receive any $25 coupon!!
Thanks for the review, I was considering buying an m800 but the awful nib made me change my mind, the pen is $60 at Amazon but if I have to replace the nib, that is not a desirable situation. I do have some inexpensive nibs that work well still I'll have to think about it.

Well, you might as well spring for the Purple M-800 too, just to make your collection complete. I have all four, and have been systematically replacing the ho-hum nibs. A Goulet black EF nib has been my favorite replacement so far. I agree that the M-800 "is a winner"; and to my thinking, it is the best Moonman pen of all.
@@InkquiringMinds I don't have a sample of it here, the closest I have in my col-o-ring are Diamine magenta and Noodler's Cactus fruit, but darker. I could try holding it against the screen with samples on mountain of ink but that's very inaccurate (even though my screen is calibrated, my lamp is not).
@@InkquiringMinds It is very close to Yama-budo indeed, at least the darker and translucent parts with some of the lighter swirls. Just checked as a WS 699 with Yama-budo is always on my desk.
I have some Moonman/Majohn pens, their nibs are very inconsistent - I have Majohn T5, Majohn Wancai, Majohn S3, Majohn M600s, only T5 writes well, the other nibs on several pens have poor ink flow, extremely dry and scratchy, and one nib on M600s seem to be misaligned, I will verify this after my loupe arrives. Jinhao which has cheaper pens than Majohn have nibs that are consistent, Jinhao nibs have never disappointed me so far.
I'm getting by with a few Chinese fountain pens. I'm not a collector but I am unemployed (thanks Covid-19). One day who knows I will be able to buy a Momento Zero. I suspect it will be a gift from my wife when I'm almost a hundred years old. Great video.
I had similar problems with the stock moonman nib on my galaxy m800. I tried micro meshing and flossing, which didn’t help. Upon digging deeper, the nib is not sitting flatly on the feed (i.e. there’s a visible gap between the two) - I wonder if there’s any qc with their nib manufacturing. 🤔 I ended up swapping it with a Nemosine nib I had sitting around, and it’s sooooo much better.
I've heard great things about the Nemosine nibs, Alan. I know Kathy at gadgetstop321 loves her Nemosine nib and swaps it around. Many times the Moonman nibs don't seem to fit the feeds flush or they are askew which pushes a tine out of alignment. I've seen that a few times. Weirdly, the Penbbs nibs fit the Moonman feeds better than the Moonman stock nib does.
@@InkquiringMinds They are great. Wish I stocked up on more of them when they had the fire sale last summer. As it is I only have a couple, and they are all great nibs. Swapped one of them into my FPR Himalaya, and it is great combo that way.
So it sounds like they are basically the same except you prefer the Zero because it is of higher quality than the M800. As a non-collector, I'm curious: why keep the M800s? I don't get it.
As a chinese pen with a cost of less than $30 i think it would be difficult to sell as a pre owned pen. Once you have nib fixed it is an excellent writting pen and the colors are different from those on the Zero.
@@edisontrent5244 Good points. One must really intend to keep it when buying an unresellable pen. So on some days one would rather use an inferior pen in a different finish. Or enjoy looking at it in the display case.
They are all different. Not just the different colours and different colour inks, the nibs are all different. The MZ is an Architect Italic and VERY different line than all the others. The Galaxy has the smoothest Penbbs fine nib of all my Penbbs pens - gorgeous writer for long sessions and the ink is KWZ Azure #5 which smells like vanilla. The Amber has the Bock nib, again a slightly different feel (now that I've tuned the hell out of it) and the Emerald with the Penbbs 355 nib now write almost as well as the Galaxy. Four different colours, four different experiences.
I had M800s on my list but wasn't thrilled with the available colors. And the nibs being ho-hum knocked them down further. If I had spare nibs it might be an option but I'm new. Yours is a nice green. The purple might have been good with the yama budo though 🍇 I'm considering the rose red New Moon you reviewed, since I love the color and want to try the upturned nib. I saw some shipping from the US online, quick pen candy. I'm going back and forth between the New Moon and the Delike Element brass pen. Something to fiddle with while I wait for the right PenBBS model/color combo to come along.
I've had a few Moonman nibs that were iffy, a few that were horrible and a handful that were excellent. The good thing is they can all be made to write better fairly easily.
TWSBI ECOs and 580s take #5, not #6 nibs, and the Jowo 5s from Goulet don't fit well. Some people claim to have made it work, but the oem nibs are good so why bother?!
I got the Moonman M800 with the galaxy finish and bock nib version at a discounted price, I had high expectation with this pen on Bock, but.... alas... although Bock is made from Germany, it is nothing like Pelikan nib, half of the cost of the Moonman M800 goes to the Bock nib and yet it cannot perform. Bock nib writes smoothly, but... pales the hue of ink, it presents grey instead of black when on Lamy Black, very disappointing. The pen itself is a nice hold, I really like to hold the pen, it would be perfect if Bock performs as expected which unfortunately not...:( This M800 is too light for my liking, I thought the pen has some weight since it is quite oversized, but my Jinhao Centennial is heavier than this.
I had a really bad experience with a M8 gold nib. It was impossible to fix, and I simply replaced it with a not-great-but-usable Noodler's nib. This week, I got a T1 Brass (have you ordered one? Quite interesting, weighty, but rather well-balanced - and brass!). It has a chrome nib and it writes magnificently right out of the box. So, I guess it is hit-or-miss with moonman nibs...
My only gripe with moonman is their lack of creativity with their copied models, don't get me wrong I enjoy my two M800's but it was such a missed opportunity to turn Leonardo's idea into their own by simply changing the clip design and filling system. Personally I've been doing some research on nib grinding mainly to spark some new life in my unused stock nibs, as I have so much free time due to a little "something" going around and I don't feel like giving up so much coin for each of my unused nibs to get grounded into something I'd like. Either way I ramble too much, another enjoyable video, keep up the good work.
@@InkquiringMinds I am tempted to get a bunch of Jinhao nibs for cheap, and experimenting. Already, well last year, turned a WS 3013 from fine to a nice stub by just clipping it off, and micromeshing it smooth. Nathan from Noodler's has some videos on this. It was an experiment which had worked very well. I spend quite the amount of time getting that thing smoothed out on four of the progressively finer micromeshes I have, but the end result is worth it.
Hmmmmmm I wonder if this could possibly fit the Ultra Flex Nib and ebonite feed from Fountain Pen Revolution so I can finally chuck that incredibly stinky converter...
Hi Dog, I really like my M800 with Bock nib, I think it is far superior to the version with Moonman nib, the nib of the latter I think is inferior even than the Jinhao FP (X450, X750, 100) .
Woof! I agree Canetas! I have a Bock on my M800 Amber and it is great. My other two M800s (Galaxy and Emerald) have Penbbs fine nibs on them. All three are superior to the Moonman stock nib.
Thanks for another awesome video. I had been wondering about the real differences between them. The comparison of the plating was something I hadn't considered. Time will tell how mine hold up as my galaxy is normally my go pen especially when leaving the house. I like that it posts nicely and for me is very comfortable to write with posted. I'm waiting on delivery of the amber one with a bock nib, never tried a bock nib. If it doesn't work well a jowo will replace it. I assume that given identically tuned nibs the basic in hand, writing experience would be the same. Thanks for another interesting and informative video.

I have had roughly 10 or 11 Moonman #6 nibs and out of those there were three or four that were very smooth and wet out of the box. That's a low percentage. I have 22 or 23 Pennbs and maybe two or three were not great - they'd write - but not great out of the box. That's a much lower percentage.
@@InkquiringMinds Oh, I do like J.Herbins inks. My first ever ink pot was their Pearl Noir which got me through college. I suppose the sad part for me is that you have a custom nib I couldn't practically get duplicated since I don't live in the states. I have to ask though, is the feedback in the opening panel with that pen real or is that a sound effect dubbed over it? It sounds so good! I've never considered an architect nib before, but I am now. Maybe a Hongdian long knife.
@@StarKnightZ The sound is a sound effect, not the actual nib. If you have a Hongdian #6 size pen already, you can get the HD Long Knife separately. I just got one.
Great review. Yes, well known 'high end' brands are overpriced. BUT you know that you are getting a well made and durable pen. Chinese pens have their place but they are not pens for life. Just my opinion and experience, of course.
I would say that the one thing that is more durable in a high end pen would be the hardware plating. That being said, the gold plating on a Pelikan steel nib is ultra thin. You don't want to be polishing those birds!
Thanks for yet another informative and nuanced video. My experience with a Moonman T1 is completely different. It had one of the best fine nibs (more medium fine) and was smooth in all directions with perfect flow. Looks like I won the nib lottery in that one. However, because I'm not a fan of none-italic pens, I've changed it to a Medium Jowo BF nib in cursive italic, which elevated a good pen to my favorite pen (and that is against tough competition). I'm still considering this pen, but maybe you can clear something up for me - I think you may have mentioned it in a previous video. As I understand it, the M800 with a Bock nib is supposed to take a Bock nib unit, whereas the M800 with a Moonman fine nib takes a proprietary / different nib unit? I find it preferable to leave nib and feed together, and just get the version with a bock nib unit, so I can order a custom ground Bock nib and replace this.
Yes, indeed, you are correct, Michael. The M800 with the Bock nib has the Bock nib/feed collar unit which is incompatible with the Moonman version of the pen. So, if you want to order a custom ground Bock unit to swap into an M800, it only works with the Bock version.

Have you tried the bock 250 titanium nibs? I got one and didn't like them at first. back then I preferred the penbbs nibs as my first choice (still love them, thanks for the tip!). But after time I would keep getting back to the titanium nib, wondering why. One day I realized that I swapped the titanium nib into every pen I wrote with at work at that moment :) there is something about the softness of that nib without being a flex nib. And it writes so wett, just exquisit.
I've heard a lot about the Bock Titanium nibs. Alan (What I Ink) has done a swap with one and so did Aaron (Aaron's Pen Videos). They seem to have a graphite pencil-like feedback to them and they are certainly nothing to look at.
Are moonman nibs usually terrible? I recently bought the S5 and C1 and both of the fine moonman nibs they came with were awful. Luckily the other nibs that came with S5 were great and it's one of my favorite pens now. Also that Emerald green color is gorgeous! Wish it was on a pen that wasn't exclusively converter filled.
Not terrible, awful. And not always. Most of the time they are okay - they write. They are uninspiring. I think I've replaced about 90% of the Moonman nibs I've purchased. The S5s were great but they were #5 and not Moonman (stub). You might find that emerald on a Moonman M100 or M300? I can't recall, but I knew I saw it on another pen.
I have the leonardo officina Italiana with a small crack in the center threads.I have used it but only once..!Italians be careful, the Chinese are coming..!Momento zero its not better to the Moonman no way..and its too dear compared to the Chinese one.The Moonman has a slight problem when you screw the cup in place.Be careful,check them when you buy.!...Both write well,the bock nib of Moonman is great,is little wet.The Italian writes also very smoothly. Which one i will buy next..?The Moonman.

I bought an Emerald M800 with a Bock nib and it wrote Perfectly right out of the box. I also have more than Bock nibs on Namisu and Jinhao pens and they all wrote Perfectly right out of the box. It seems that you are the most unlucky guy in the world regarding Bock nibs.
I personally enjoy Bock nibs more than Jowo but you'd have to be in denial to say Bock doesn't have a problem with QC. Leonardo isn't the only one to run into this issue, Kaweco, Monteverde, Conklin, and Stipula, just to name a few, have all ran into issue with Bock nibs. However do take into consideration of 'user error' which "could" play a part for some reports of a bad nib as a newbie doesn't always have a full grasp of what they're talking about.
@@i.c.3157 the only time that I have experienced inconsistent performance was with some Kaweco Sport #5 nibs, never with #6 nibs. May be I'm just lucky. Yes I've heard of the cases that you mentioned and yes I too like Bock better than JoWo. I find original JoWo nibs less refined and not to my taste, although I like their TWSBI and Faber-Castell incarnations.
@@korax67 Most of the nibs are probably fine, but you ship the number of pens Leonardo does, then even a small percentage of bad nibs slipping out of the Bock's factory is going to give you headaches with the returns, replacements, and customer service. And lately that percentage of bad nibs wasn't so small, ergo all the companies switching away from Bock.
I can't decide between the Amber and the green, someone help me out! I have never had any experience with a Bock nib which was better that any Chinese nib and I am pretty good at tuning and regrinding nibs so it is easy to choose the cheaper variant but I really like how Jowo nibs have a good amount of spring in them so how well do Jowos fit in this pen? It's nice to not have to spend loads for a nice acrylic.

Do you know if I buy the moonman nib model because it's cheaper than the bock nib model if I can just unscrew the moonman nib from the grip section and swap it for a bock #6 I already have or do I need to buy the bock nib model if I intend on using bock nibs in it?
Thanks! The Moonman nib and Bock nib versions of the M800 are not compatible with each other. The nib/feed assemblies are different and take different converters. You might be able to swap the Bock nib you have for the Moonman nib if you pull it out of the nib assembly. Both are #6 size nibs but your mileage may vary depending on how will the Bock nib conforms to the Moonman feed. I've moved my Bock #6 around to a number of different pens with varying results.
@@bandit-revolver I am unsure about the Jowo as I have never tried that brand in a M800. The standard Moonman #6 and the Jowo #6 are roughly the same size. The Bock might fit a Moonman feed, but I only have a Bock in the M800 that came with the Bock nib unit and feed. I have Penbbs #6 nibs in my Moonman M800s and they fit perfectly, so I expect a Jowo should do as well. Again just a guess as I've not tried it.
Hmmm. I just bought a few fountain pen revolution nibs and put them in my jinhao 750s... they would be much prettier in this pen. I could have bought the fpr pens with these nibs for a similar price, but the one I did buy, although pretty, isn’t that well made, and leaks.
I liked it. It demonstrated a stock nib for each, and a preferred repair / swap by doug. If you would like to see large numbers of different nibs compared try ChrisRap52's channel, he has demonstrated something from just about every brand at some point and has many conversions.
@@edisontrent5244 I know, and I have learned a lot from his channel. It was my humorous way of giving Doug a "like" on the "not terrible, Aweful!" Remarks :) I too have two m800s with Bocks, they are not bad for my needs, and I like the Bocks on my Kawecos, I have a few Jowos and a metric ton of Jinhao nibs to compare with, but I don't feel like I have enough experience to discern what I like. Doug helps me listen to my hands as I write, as do Chris, Jason, Stephen and the other great pen channels. I love them all.
@@InkquiringMinds Certainly watching Chrisrap52's channel gives you the confidence to start messing with your nibs when they don't perform the way you expect them to, or at all. Certainly at least with the steel ones anyway.
It is easy to put Moonman's nibs ass to work. Just a good loupe and you can see what happens most of the time. Once you fix them, they are great. If I can do it, anyone can do it! LOL
The Penbbs fine nib is a slightly upturned, bent nib sometimes called a mini-fude or a Waverly nib. They tend to write a little thicker than a regular eastern fine nib. They measure around .5mm.
Please don't stop with those little clips! I absolutely love them!

I don't mind stock nibs being too dry. It's much easier to tune them wetter than to tune a wet nib to be drier, after all.

@@InkquiringMinds The previous two M800 videos convince me to give one a try, as I wasn't sure of that section by just looking at pictures of it. Much more benign slope in hand. I think it will be fine. If the Moonman nib won't perform, then I have a PenBBS RM in a keychain caddy, so that could get swapped in. I have a Nemosine stub lying around as well, so there are options, although I do like the Moonman nibs when they work.
My M800 Amber is here. I swapped a Penbbs steel "F" nib into it. It looks really great. I don't know how to share a pic here. Otherwise I can show you.

There were allot of problems with viscontis a while ago. I think they are Jowo nibs now, I have been considering, the price and magnetic closure keep me away.

Interesting. I have a Moonman T1 and it is probably the best nib in my collection. Super smooth. Better than several pens I own in the 80 dollar range.

I agree with the you 100% although a few times I only purchase the inexpensive one as a gift, for a prop etc but I too get less expensive one AND the full price one.
Hi Doug, I like the green though, very wise choice. A great colour match would be Diamine Sherwood Green (my fav green haha). My latest pen acquisition has disappeared between the United States and Australia, it left Hong Kong and seemed to have disappeared in the Indian Ocean somewhere :(

The 600S came with a 2 tone Moonman medium nib that is great! following your lead, I replaced the Moonman fine on the M800 with a Goulet fine from a Jinhao 159 and it was a great swap. Thanks for the review, I was considering buying an m800 but the awful nib made me change my mind, the pen is $60 at Amazon but if I have to replace the nib, that is not a desirable situation. I do have some inexpensive nibs that work well still I'll have to think about it.
I bought the less expensive versions with the Moonman nibs and replaced them with Penbbs.
Another timely vid, Sir! I have an M800 Galaxy in route from China and a Bock Ti nib in route from the UK. After some pen surgery I expect to have another great pen.

Well, you might as well spring for the Purple M-800 too, just to make your collection complete. I have all four, and have been systematically replacing the ho-hum nibs. A Goulet black EF nib has been my favorite replacement so far. I agree that the M-800 "is a winner"; and to my thinking, it is the best Moonman pen of all.
I have one, it's not really purple, it's redder, more like a magenta.
It is certainly my favourite Moonman of them all. What colour M800 did you put a black Goulet (Jowo) EF into? Please tell me the Amber.

@@InkquiringMinds I don't have a sample of it here, the closest I have in my col-o-ring are Diamine magenta and Noodler's Cactus fruit, but darker. I could try holding it against the screen with samples on mountain of ink but that's very inaccurate (even though my screen is calibrated, my lamp is not).
@@InkquiringMinds It is very close to Yama-budo indeed, at least the darker and translucent parts with some of the lighter swirls. Just checked as a WS 699 with Yama-budo is always on my desk.
I have some Moonman/Majohn pens, their nibs are very inconsistent - I have Majohn T5, Majohn Wancai, Majohn S3, Majohn M600s, only T5 writes well, the other nibs on several pens have poor ink flow, extremely dry and scratchy, and one nib on M600s seem to be misaligned, I will verify this after my loupe arrives. Jinhao which has cheaper pens than Majohn have nibs that are consistent, Jinhao nibs have never disappointed me so far.
I'm getting by with a few Chinese fountain pens. I'm not a collector but I am unemployed (thanks Covid-19). One day who knows I will be able to buy a Momento Zero. I suspect it will be a gift from my wife when I'm almost a hundred years old. Great video.

I had similar problems with the stock moonman nib on my galaxy m800. I tried micro meshing and flossing, which didn’t help. Upon digging deeper, the nib is not sitting flatly on the feed (i.e. there’s a visible gap between the two) - I wonder if there’s any qc with their nib manufacturing. 🤔
I ended up swapping it with a Nemosine nib I had sitting around, and it’s sooooo much better.
I've heard great things about the Nemosine nibs, Alan. I know Kathy at gadgetstop321 loves her Nemosine nib and swaps it around. Many times the Moonman nibs don't seem to fit the feeds flush or they are askew which pushes a tine out of alignment. I've seen that a few times. Weirdly, the Penbbs nibs fit the Moonman feeds better than the Moonman stock nib does.
@@InkquiringMinds They are great. Wish I stocked up on more of them when they had the fire sale last summer. As it is I only have a couple, and they are all great nibs. Swapped one of them into my FPR Himalaya, and it is great combo that way.
So it sounds like they are basically the same except you prefer the Zero because it is of higher quality than the M800. As a non-collector, I'm curious: why keep the M800s? I don't get it.

As a chinese pen with a cost of less than $30 i think it would be difficult to sell as a pre owned pen. Once you have nib fixed it is an excellent writting pen and the colors are different from those on the Zero.
@@edisontrent5244 Good points. One must really intend to keep it when buying an unresellable pen. So on some days one would rather use an inferior pen in a different finish. Or enjoy looking at it in the display case.
They are all different. Not just the different colours and different colour inks, the nibs are all different. The MZ is an Architect Italic and VERY different line than all the others. The Galaxy has the smoothest Penbbs fine nib of all my Penbbs pens - gorgeous writer for long sessions and the ink is KWZ Azure #5 which smells like vanilla. The Amber has the Bock nib, again a slightly different feel (now that I've tuned the hell out of it) and the Emerald with the Penbbs 355 nib now write almost as well as the Galaxy. Four different colours, four different experiences.
I haven't even thought about selling any of these.
I had M800s on my list but wasn't thrilled with the available colors. And the nibs being ho-hum knocked them down further. If I had spare nibs it might be an option but I'm new. Yours is a nice green. The purple might have been good with the yama budo though 🍇
I'm considering the rose red New Moon you reviewed, since I love the color and want to try the upturned nib. I saw some shipping from the US online, quick pen candy. I'm going back and forth between the New Moon and the Delike Element brass pen. Something to fiddle with while I wait for the right PenBBS model/color combo to come along.

Hey Doug, did you use the feed on the moon man or the feed from your pen BBS?
If you are talking about using a Penbbs nib on a Moonman, you use the feed and collar native to the pen you are swapping to.
I haven’t had a bad Moonman nib yet. They have been good writers with a bit of tweaking. Maybe I have been lucky.
I've had a few Moonman nibs that were iffy, a few that were horrible and a handful that were excellent. The good thing is they can all be made to write better fairly easily.
TWSBI ECOs and 580s take #5, not #6 nibs, and the Jowo 5s from Goulet don't fit well. Some people claim to have made it work, but the oem nibs are good so why bother?!
Yes. Another commenter has already made me aware of that. It knocks the 580 down a notch for me. I hear it is more like a 5.5 than a 5 though.

I'm not a huge green fan (not easy ya know). So, when I got to the green side (Luke, the green side), I prefer a teal, emerald, peacock kind of green.

I got the Moonman M800 with the galaxy finish and bock nib version at a discounted price, I had high expectation with this pen on Bock, but.... alas... although Bock is made from Germany, it is nothing like Pelikan nib, half of the cost of the Moonman M800 goes to the Bock nib and yet it cannot perform. Bock nib writes smoothly, but... pales the hue of ink, it presents grey instead of black when on Lamy Black, very disappointing. The pen itself is a nice hold, I really like to hold the pen, it would be perfect if Bock performs as expected which unfortunately not...:( This M800 is too light for my liking, I thought the pen has some weight since it is quite oversized, but my Jinhao Centennial is heavier than this.
Bock seem to be all over the place. A lot depends on how well the pen company that uses Bock does their quality control.

I had a really bad experience with a M8 gold nib. It was impossible to fix, and I simply replaced it with a not-great-but-usable Noodler's nib. This week, I got a T1 Brass (have you ordered one? Quite interesting, weighty, but rather well-balanced - and brass!). It has a chrome nib and it writes magnificently right out of the box. So, I guess it is hit-or-miss with moonman nibs...
I've seen the Brass T1 but have not pulled the trigger. And yes, very hit and miss with Moonman nibs.
My only gripe with moonman is their lack of creativity with their copied models, don't get me wrong I enjoy my two M800's but it was such a missed opportunity to turn Leonardo's idea into their own by simply changing the clip design and filling system.
Personally I've been doing some research on nib grinding mainly to spark some new life in my unused stock nibs, as I have so much free time due to a little "something" going around and I don't feel like giving up so much coin for each of my unused nibs to get grounded into something I'd like.
Either way I ramble too much, another enjoyable video, keep up the good work.
I"m doing the same thing. I have my Dremel setup to give it a go on some throwaway nibs.
@@InkquiringMinds I am tempted to get a bunch of Jinhao nibs for cheap, and experimenting. Already, well last year, turned a WS 3013 from fine to a nice stub by just clipping it off, and micromeshing it smooth. Nathan from Noodler's has some videos on this. It was an experiment which had worked very well. I spend quite the amount of time getting that thing smoothed out on four of the progressively finer micromeshes I have, but the end result is worth it.

Woof! I agree Canetas! I have a Bock on my M800 Amber and it is great. My other two M800s (Galaxy and Emerald) have Penbbs fine nibs on them. All three are superior to the Moonman stock nib.
Thanks for another awesome video. I had been wondering about the real differences between them. The comparison of the plating was something I hadn't considered. Time will tell how mine hold up as my galaxy is normally my go pen especially when leaving the house. I like that it posts nicely and for me is very comfortable to write with posted. I'm waiting on delivery of the amber one with a bock nib, never tried a bock nib. If it doesn't work well a jowo will replace it.
I assume that given identically tuned nibs the basic in hand, writing experience would be the same.

I have had roughly 10 or 11 Moonman #6 nibs and out of those there were three or four that were very smooth and wet out of the box. That's a low percentage. I have 22 or 23 Pennbs and maybe two or three were not great - they'd write - but not great out of the box. That's a much lower percentage.

@@InkquiringMinds Oh, I do like J.Herbins inks. My first ever ink pot was their Pearl Noir which got me through college. I suppose the sad part for me is that you have a custom nib I couldn't practically get duplicated since I don't live in the states. I have to ask though, is the feedback in the opening panel with that pen real or is that a sound effect dubbed over it? It sounds so good! I've never considered an architect nib before, but I am now. Maybe a Hongdian long knife.
@@StarKnightZ The sound is a sound effect, not the actual nib. If you have a Hongdian #6 size pen already, you can get the HD Long Knife separately. I just got one.

Great review. Yes, well known 'high end' brands are overpriced. BUT you know that you are getting a well made and durable pen. Chinese pens have their place but they are not pens for life. Just my opinion and experience, of course.
I would say that the one thing that is more durable in a high end pen would be the hardware plating. That being said, the gold plating on a Pelikan steel nib is ultra thin. You don't want to be polishing those birds!
Thanks for yet another informative and nuanced video. My experience with a Moonman T1 is completely different. It had one of the best fine nibs (more medium fine) and was smooth in all directions with perfect flow. Looks like I won the nib lottery in that one.
However, because I'm not a fan of none-italic pens, I've changed it to a Medium Jowo BF nib in cursive italic, which elevated a good pen to my favorite pen (and that is against tough competition).
I'm still considering this pen, but maybe you can clear something up for me - I think you may have mentioned it in a previous video. As I understand it, the M800 with a Bock nib is supposed to take a Bock nib unit, whereas the M800 with a Moonman fine nib takes a proprietary / different nib unit?
I find it preferable to leave nib and feed together, and just get the version with a bock nib unit, so I can order a custom ground Bock nib and replace this.
Yes, indeed, you are correct, Michael. The M800 with the Bock nib has the Bock nib/feed collar unit which is incompatible with the Moonman version of the pen. So, if you want to order a custom ground Bock unit to swap into an M800, it only works with the Bock version.

I’ve done both. On my current (3) Moonman M800s I have two Leonardo nibs and one Bock. The Leos were fit into the Moonman nib units.

Have you tried the bock 250 titanium nibs? I got one and didn't like them at first. back then I preferred the penbbs nibs as my first choice (still love them, thanks for the tip!). But after time I would keep getting back to the titanium nib, wondering why. One day I realized that I swapped the titanium nib into every pen I wrote with at work at that moment :) there is something about the softness of that nib without being a flex nib. And it writes so wett, just exquisit.
I've heard a lot about the Bock Titanium nibs. Alan (What I Ink) has done a swap with one and so did Aaron (Aaron's Pen Videos). They seem to have a graphite pencil-like feedback to them and they are certainly nothing to look at.
Are moonman nibs usually terrible? I recently bought the S5 and C1 and both of the fine moonman nibs they came with were awful. Luckily the other nibs that came with S5 were great and it's one of my favorite pens now.
Also that Emerald green color is gorgeous! Wish it was on a pen that wasn't exclusively converter filled.
Not terrible, awful. And not always. Most of the time they are okay - they write. They are uninspiring. I think I've replaced about 90% of the Moonman nibs I've purchased. The S5s were great but they were #5 and not Moonman (stub). You might find that emerald on a Moonman M100 or M300? I can't recall, but I knew I saw it on another pen.
I have the leonardo officina Italiana with a small crack in the center threads.I have used it but only once..!Italians be careful, the Chinese are coming..!Momento zero its not better to the Moonman no way..and its too dear compared to the Chinese one.The Moonman has a slight problem when you screw the cup in place.Be careful,check them when you buy.!...Both write well,the bock nib of Moonman is great,is little wet.The Italian writes also very smoothly. Which one i will buy next..?The Moonman.
I think the Leonardo IS better than the Moonman. The acrylic is better, the converter is better, the section is better and the nib is better.

I bought an Emerald M800 with a Bock nib and it wrote Perfectly right out of the box. I also have more than Bock nibs on Namisu and Jinhao pens and they all wrote Perfectly right out of the box.
It seems that you are the most unlucky guy in the world regarding Bock nibs.
I personally enjoy Bock nibs more than Jowo but you'd have to be in denial to say Bock doesn't have a problem with QC. Leonardo isn't the only one to run into this issue, Kaweco, Monteverde, Conklin, and Stipula, just to name a few, have all ran into issue with Bock nibs.
However do take into consideration of 'user error' which "could" play a part for some reports of a bad nib as a newbie doesn't always have a full grasp of what they're talking about.
@@i.c.3157 the only time that I have experienced inconsistent performance was with some Kaweco Sport #5 nibs, never with #6 nibs. May be I'm just lucky. Yes I've heard of the cases that you mentioned and yes I too like Bock better than JoWo. I find original JoWo nibs less refined and not to my taste, although I like their TWSBI and Faber-Castell incarnations.
@@korax67 Most of the nibs are probably fine, but you ship the number of pens Leonardo does, then even a small percentage of bad nibs slipping out of the Bock's factory is going to give you headaches with the returns, replacements, and customer service. And lately that percentage of bad nibs wasn't so small, ergo all the companies switching away from Bock.
My Bock/M800 Amber writes fine now (not just a fine line but fine in terms of it writes well). :)

I have never had any experience with a Bock nib which was better that any Chinese nib and I am pretty good at tuning and regrinding nibs so it is easy to choose the cheaper variant but I really like how Jowo nibs have a good amount of spring in them so how well do Jowos fit in this pen?

Well, the nib that is now in that emerald green Moonman M800 (Moonman nib version) is a Jowo #6 1.1 stub. So, I'd say it fits really well.

Do you know if I buy the moonman nib model because it's cheaper than the bock nib model if I can just unscrew the moonman nib from the grip section and swap it for a bock #6 I already have or do I need to buy the bock nib model if I intend on using bock nibs in it?
Thanks! The Moonman nib and Bock nib versions of the M800 are not compatible with each other. The nib/feed assemblies are different and take different converters. You might be able to swap the Bock nib you have for the Moonman nib if you pull it out of the nib assembly. Both are #6 size nibs but your mileage may vary depending on how will the Bock nib conforms to the Moonman feed. I've moved my Bock #6 around to a number of different pens with varying results.

@@bandit-revolver I am unsure about the Jowo as I have never tried that brand in a M800. The standard Moonman #6 and the Jowo #6 are roughly the same size. The Bock might fit a Moonman feed, but I only have a Bock in the M800 that came with the Bock nib unit and feed. I have Penbbs #6 nibs in my Moonman M800s and they fit perfectly, so I expect a Jowo should do as well. Again just a guess as I've not tried it.
Hmmm. I just bought a few fountain pen revolution nibs and put them in my jinhao 750s... they would be much prettier in this pen. I could have bought the fpr pens with these nibs for a similar price, but the one I did buy, although pretty, isn’t that well made, and leaks.

I liked it. It demonstrated a stock nib for each, and a preferred repair / swap by doug. If you would like to see large numbers of different nibs compared try ChrisRap52's channel, he has demonstrated something from just about every brand at some point and has many conversions.

I too have two m800s with Bocks, they are not bad for my needs, and I like the Bocks on my Kawecos, I have a few Jowos and a metric ton of Jinhao nibs to compare with, but I don't feel like I have enough experience to discern what I like. @@InkquiringMinds Certainly watching Chrisrap52's channel gives you the confidence to start messing with your nibs when they don't perform the way you expect them to, or at all. Certainly at least with the steel ones anyway.

They look good, but they really are rip offs of some of the finest pens ever made. They should stop copying and start making their own styled pens.

It is easy to put Moonman's nibs ass to work. Just a good loupe and you can see what happens most of the time. Once you fix them, they are great. If I can do it, anyone can do it! LOL
Those “fines” look pretty wet to me .
The Penbbs fine nib is a slightly upturned, bent nib sometimes called a mini-fude or a Waverly nib. They tend to write a little thicker than a regular eastern fine nib. They measure around .5mm.
